Rumor: Melvin Ely for Devin Brown + Zarko Cabarkapa + Chris Taft

In the TrueHoop comments section JonathanG (Jonathan Givony from DraftExpress?) is hearing that the Warriors have traded Devin Brown, Zarko Cabarkapa, and Chris Taft for Melvin Ely in a 3 for 1 deal. There's also probably 2 draft picks involved in the transaction.

We'll keep you updated as soon as we find out or if someone on the web reports anything. Definitely post it in a diary as soon as you hear if a trade goes down to keep the GSoM community updated with the latest.

Now thats good.
By all means, do it. Ely isn't great, but it lessens the PF logjam and gets rid of a Jazz. Who knows? Ely could break out.

Please let this be true!

Bad Move!!
Unless we are the team getting the picks, then maybe it gets better. But i wouldnt trade Taft straight up for Ely. Maybe his back is worse than we know.No thank you. Carbarkapa i thought was supposed to be the prototype Nellie player. With Wagner in Brown is expendable.

Poor Ike....

So Murph, Ike, Foyle, Biedrins, POB, ....  logjam... why not throw another log on the fire.

It made sense when we were going to acquire G. Wallace....

This move doesnt even allow us to move one of those bad contracts.....

Taft unproven
We got rid of 3 guys that were not going anywhere and got a guy who can play some Center.

Taft was a low rated 2nd round prospect (our 3rd pick) with an injury that's kept him from any contact for almost a full season.

Zarko wasn't mentioned by Nellie and just never clicked -- I doubt he'll resign in the NBA when his contract ends.

Ely isn't much but as a back-up PF/Center for a team that will probably need all the help it can get at the 5 spot.

Taft
Taft was considered a talented enough big man that he was touted as a lottery pick before his soph year.  He dropped in large part because of questions about his attitude.

Last season he looked good when he played.  He held position in the post on defense and showed good hands rebounding the ball.  He didn't look like he was going to light the world on fire, but he looked like he was going to be a solid if unspectacular pro.  Where he was actually drafted is irrelevent at this point.  It doesn't make him a better or worse player, but only indicates what people thought of him a year ago.  The only real question is whether or not he'll ever be healthy and that's a real risk for a big man who has had back surgery at age 20.

But at the price he's at now, it's a reasonable risk to take.

Ely brings back someone who can score some, but at the expense of rebounds.  Big men who can't rebound hurt their teams more often than not, probably one of the reasons Ely doesn't seem to improve the clubs he's been on.  The players suggested in this means that they're talking about  a deal starting at about $5million a year.  For Ely, that doesn't really sound like much of a deal.

Excellent General Principle
Where he was actually drafted is irrelevent at this point.  It doesn't make him a better or worse player, but only indicates what people thought of him a year ago.

I'm really feeling that line man.

SF Chron:
Meanwhile, oft-injured forward Chris Taft has endured another setback unrelated to last year's back surgery. Taft has an inflammatory condition that is causing weakness and stiffness in his muscles and remains out indefinitely.

...Looks like Taft was to make the money right for an Ely trade.

...I Liked the kid's flashes of play too.

Thats giving up WAY TOO MUCH!
A couple of 2nds are more than enough for Ely.  Why throw in Zarko AND Taft?  I don't care about clearing log jams if it means losing talent.  Thats the type of trades bad teams do.  And I'm sick of being a bad team.

Bad trade.

JANNY HU is reporting a 3 for 1 deal! Hmm...
"Briefly: The Warriors are engaged in serious talks to acquire Bobcats forward Melvin Ely, according to a source. The deal would likely involve three players going to Charlotte. Ely averaged 9.8 points and 4.9 rebounds last season.
Training camp schedule"

WAY too much to give up
Ely isn't anywhere near a stud...why throw in Taft when he has so much potential? and if that's OUR two draft picks for the loaded 2007 draft, it's a HORRIBLE deal

I don't think we'll be giving up any first round..
and I doubt we're giving them 2 picks. We're probobly at least getting one.

Ely is decent
Not every trade needs to be a blockbuster.  Ely can give the Warriors real toughness.  Taft is fragile.  He might be good down the road, he might not.  Ely is ready to play Now.  Zarko may have been great in Nellie's system, but i won't shed tears for his departure.  Obviously the Warriors would Receive picks for this trade, right?

Ely
Ely is a known quantity, and based on Nelson's history is just one of a bevy of moves we should expect to be made moving role players around ... only surprise is Taft's injury not precluding his inclusion ... Zarko is not a proven quantity but Nelson certainly has seen enough tape to know if he fits, Brown is a known quantity and Nelson knows the depth at guard ... the draft picks are likely one going each way, 2nd rounders perhaps ... besides we'd do well to remember the Wallace rumors, 99% of the time ...

draft picks
i really doubt that the W's would give up 2 first rounders, i think its

Bobcats get: Brown, Taft, Carcarkapa, our second round pick

W's get: Ely, their second round pick

Kosta Costa rookie of the year in 07!!!!!!!!

Our guys are "contracts" not players
We shouldn't be thinking of Zarko, Taft, Brown as actual players with talent.  I think it's pretty clear that these expiring contracts were either a) going to be traded for something of value or b) let to be expired and not re-signed.  So thinking of Taft as have "potential" doesn't really matter at this point.

The question is, do we want to spend these expiring deals on Ely?  I agree with badnamedwarriorfan that the 2 picks are probably just 2nd round swaps...which is nice, but not that significant.

Personally, I don't think Ely will make much of an impact at all.  Is this going to be a sign and trade?  Our 3 contracts total $5.4mil, so is Ely going to be signed for the MLE by Charlotte and then traded to us?  Do we want ANOTHER $5mil+/year guaranteed contract at the PF/C?  I don't think so.  I'd rather let these guys expire, or use them in a better trade to either get 1st round picks, or maybe an SF?

Just my low IQ opinion.

Top 7 of '07 draft = Warriors only chance of being good over the next 5 years

Looks like we posted similar thoughts
I should have double checked before posting since I had to do something mid-post and ...

...you get the idea.

Agree with "contracts" , ...basically this deal completes the Fisher "contract" to Utah salary dump.

Add'l salary savings were realized and roster slots opened up to better balance player's roles.

Zarko getting $5.7 mil (2.2+3.5) the next 2 years;
D Brown $2.6 for this season; Taft $665,000 this season.

That is $9 mil freed up; $5.5 for this trade so we know Ely will sign for $4.4 mil or more for this season. Is it a good trade? I think it is if Ely signs up for 2 years and a team opt on a third season.

Nelly projected two lineups;

Offense 1:
Baron's basic lineup;
PG BD
SG J Rich
SF Dunleavy
PF Ely/Ike
C  Murphy/Ike

Offense 2:
Ellis/Dunleavy's basic Lineup;
PG Monta
SG Dujuan
SF J Rich
PF Dunleavy/Ely
C  Murphy/Ike

Defensive subs
PG (McLeod?)
SG  Pietrus
SF (Matt Barnes Invited to take this)
PF
C   Foyle vs the larger Centers

Add'l Depth
PG McLeod
SG McLeod
SF 0
PF Biedrins
C  O'bryant,(Not sure of Perovic's status)

- Owens $676,000 contract will probably be traded or dropped and the GSW will have a roster of 15 players.

I like this roster if Ely signs for multiple years. I really appreciate the way the youth is intact and set up to eventually take over.

Thumbs up!

Devon and Chris
This won't really do much for us ... I kinda like it though. I don't want to give up too early on Taft and Devin is good in my eyes ...

But honestly i don't see any of these players breaking into the starting lineup, ever! unless Taft fools us all

once again it's in Mully's hands
- that is, if the Wallace "deal" was ever real and Mullin had a decision to make, anyway according to Bobcats, both Phoenix and GS are trying to work out contract with Ely

Yes on Ely
Marvin Ely is another quality big man to add and great for depth. He can have a great year and reminds me of Chris Wilcox. Remember Biedrins is horrible at free throws and gets a foul per 15 seconds. I think Ely at the 5 will compliment Murph/Diogu at the 4 and Baron has a sure big man to flush the ball in the basket since Foyle can't. Marvin averaged 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. Sign him up! I'm hoping the better draft pick goes to the Warriors. Taft can go since he won't get playing time against Murph/Ike/Andris and even Foyle. Devin Brown can go, even though he is decent because DaJuan Wagner can be a hell of a spark off the bench.
