New site Poll

Just trying to see what everyone else out there thinks of the new site. Which way do you like it? Just trying to help out the makers of the site with keeping the people happy.
Any suggestions maybe to help out?
Am I the only one that preferred the old site alot more. I just feel it's to bright and not that easy on the eyes.
Go Warriors.

New site
My keyboard is about to explode 'cause it's so difficult to write anything negative about this site.  It's off the chain!

However...the new, monochomatic, look doesn't give any separation between the verticle collumns.  That's what I notice...the old site clearly had the main topics in the middle, diaries on the right etc.  I mean, it's still easy to find everything, but I think more distinction/separation is what we should be looking for.

I'm sorry if you have to change anything, I know the time put in to redesign was with good intentions.

Top 7 of '07 draft = Warriors only chance of being good over the next 5 years

Blue
If you really want to try to get rid of the blue. Maybe try like the Warriors alt uniforms and go to the Golden State Orange on the sides.  Not sure if that look good until actually trying it out.

As long...
... as it's not too bright, I'd be fine, although preferably a darker color for the columns.

I mostly like the changes
Cleaner, simpler, easier to read. The heavy field of blue was too strong visually. Three quibbles, a minor one and a bigger one:

(1) Grey in the left column could be 10-20% darker. It's a bit too subtle now. This might also address some of the other posters' issues with the site's "brightness."

(2) Red as the secondary accent color (in the number of posts, for example): doesn't fit with the palette and just isn't Warriors-ish.

But more importantly...

(3) The LOGO in the upper left. Am I the only one who doesn't like it? First of all, it's not pretty: too many gradients and drop-shadows and the black "GSoM Motto" headline just below it is crowding it. But also, conceptually, it just doesn't capture the spirit of the team or the site. I love the name Golden State 'cos I grew up with it, but we all know we are a BAY AREA team first and foremost. The outline of our fair State has very little to with us. And do we really want SoCal -- our perpetual tormentors -- represented by our logo?

Here, just for fun I futzed around and came up with a rough draft of an alternate logo...

(D'oh, it doesn't appear to be linking properly. Any suggestions, moderators?)

Obviously there'd be copyright issues with the Jumpman, but that could be remedied quickly enough. I thought it captured the spirit of the site better than the existing one. If anyone is still reading this thread, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Perhaps this could be the subject of the next GSoM contest?

Yeah let's have a contest
Great idea about the contest.  Let's get this site all cooled out before opening day.

reuploading
Trying to see if I did this flickr thing right...

Ah, now it seems to be working. Comments? Rants? Raves?

sorry, no
I'm not feeling it.

That's hot man
I'm feeling it. The only thing is that we can't use the Jordan logo. Nike might sue us!

We'll come up with something so that everyone can help out and submit their ideas. This is a community space, so we want you all to really enjoy it and have an active role in shaping it to what you want it to be.

Thanks!
If I were to submit the design in the Official GSoM Logo Design Contest (TM), I was planning to would rework the silhouette in the image of JRich-- the closest we have to an iconic player. I was thinking an image like this

or this

would lend themselves nicely to an iconic silhouette.

On the existing logo: I agree with the general consensus that it looks much better on blue, and it is certainly a step up from that Bulls logo bloodsweatndonuts linked to. Still, I guess I'm just a design purist when it comes to outlines, gradient fills, and dropshadows. I think they're way overused, and they tend to give an amateurish look. Why would a lightning bolt have a dropshadow? Or a State for that matter?

Also, conceptually: do people not agree with my previous points re California v. the Bay Area? One of the great things about the THE CITY logo -- in addition to its old-school simplicity (its lack of gradients and dropshadows, for example!) -- is that it's so URBAN. We are a city team -- Oakland/SF -- so much more a state one. And basketball is fundamentally a city game.

Actually now that I think of it, the Bay Bridge would make more sense if we were to go with the "JRich Jumping Over a Bridge" concept. Not quite as iconic and striking as the Golden Gate bridge, and lacking the "Golden" verbal connection, but clearly way more evocative of our real home: Oakland, C-A. (Are there any actual hoops fans in Marin?)

Anyway, blah blah ... when's the contest? The season starts soon! For those who like the original logo, I suggest you include that as one of the options. I know how people love to vote for incumbents (see Bush, George W., as proof).

That second one is sweet
Can you knock it out with ultimatte or something like that to get a perfect sillohuette.

Love the idea of another contest
We here are GSoM are always trying to improve the site so we definitely appreciate all the support and criticism. We are taking notes and still working on this site, so please keep giving us ideas. We definitely want this site to be ready and perfect before the season starts.

Word!
My proposed new logo may have its flaws, but that inane new ad looks like ASS. Atma, didn't you just say you wanted to keep the site G/PG-rated?

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 7, 2006 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry about that
Junkie made another post about it but we were unaware about this until this weekend. Sorry for the mistake, we are just as shocked as you when we saw it and now its down.

I'm even more dissapointed that it wasn't a nicer ... well you already put it!

Sincerest Apologies
Atma, didn't you just say you wanted to keep the site G/PG-rated

Sleepy- Really sorry about that. Check out Apologies: The explicit ad: http://www.goldenstateofmind.com/story/2006/10/8/23434/0809 for the details.

Long story short- we didn't accept the ad, but somehow it popped up on our site.

I like the blue . . .
The white gives the site an "under construction" feel. Plus, the logo looks 10X better with the blue background. I didn't even know the left column was grey until I read Sleepy Freud's post. In fact, when you guys moved to SB Nation, my first reaction was, "wow, this site looks great". The darker border is also more consistant with the other SB Nation sites that I've checked out (all baseball though). That being said, if you hadn't asked, I wouldn't have thought to have mentioned it.

The more I look at the other SB Basketball sites
the more I like the GSOM logo. The Blazers one is very weak, about as un NBA as could be imagined. Could of at least had Zach Randolph posting up one of those explorer guys.
If you haven't seen the Bulls Blog logo, do so immediately. It is the silliest thing I have ever seen. Ever. That thing belongs in some sort of competition for the wierdest graphic design concept involving livestock and an I-Book.

Diaries Link
I wish the Diaries Link was there on all pages not just the home page.  Also, it would be nice for a link to a list of diaries.

Good suggestions
We're learning the complicated backend as we go. We def want to get those diaries going strong. It's fun for us and it's fun for you all.

Lopsided and too bright
Hate to say critical things about a well designed site but ya gotta keep improving to stay ahead of the other guys.  So a design contest is a great idea.  I'm sure there's lots of talent out there in Warrior fandom--but be careful what you ask for.....

Okay the current changes make the site look lopsided because of the blue and light grey opposing each other.  Some stronger horizontal color bars on the right side would help to balance it out.  Could ya turn down the bright white volume please.  Didn't notice it til this survey though.  But once you notice it, it needs to be changed. Should be fun.
