OPEN THREAD: Game #4 - Warriors vs Mavericks

1106warriorsmavs W LOGO

Warriors (W-L): 1-2

Mavericks (W-L): 0-2

Time: 5:30PM PST tip off

After a getting blown out in Utah, the Warriors are going head to head with Nellie's old team, the Dallas Mavericks. Struggling to get their first win, the Mavs will no doubt bring everything that they can to the table as they face their former coach tonight. It should be interesting to watch the two teams; each having been destroyed in their previous games face off against each other. Who is more fired up and ready to play? It should be a battle of intensity between these two teams tonight.

Let's hope that Nellie's knowledge of his old team helps us nail down a W!

Vegas Odds: Dallas favored by 10 points.

GSoM Prediction: If memory serves me correctly, in previous years the Dubs have had the Mavs number. I can't explain it. But combine past examples with the fact that we now have their former coach? I say Warriors by 3.

Make sure to drop your vote for who you think will win in the Comments. If you're watching or listening near a computer, post any comments you have during the game right here.

TAKE EM' DOWN DUBS!

Update: Live Box Score from Yahoo!

Update 2:

WARRIORS WIN 107-104!!

Stay tuned! Hash got a PHAT recap coming...

you gotta be kidding
I know we are all BIG TIME W's fans here, but seriously...it would take a miracle to win this game the way the W's have been playing.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

I have no idea why, BUT
WE OWN THE MAVS!

Do NOT ask me to explain this. It makes absolutely no sense.

Lineup changes
From Janny Hu:
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=27&entry_id=10617
Players are preparing for Mike Dunleavy and Mickael Pietrus to swap places for a night, with Pietrus starting at small forward and Dunleavy off the bench at any of the guard or forward spots.

More changes could be on the way, too. Warriors coach Don Nelson said last week he considered starting Monta Ellis at SG before opting to try Dunleavy at the point. So a Baron Davis, Ellis, Jason Richardson, Troy Murphy, Andris Biedrins lineup is still a future possibility.

Monty was scared out of mind to bench Dunleavy. I'm glad to see we've got a coach now who isn't afraid to try new things.

Dunleavy
Ya'll remember when Musselman was asked why he didn't play Dunleavy? His response was, "because I wanted to win the game." I wonder if there's a clip of that somewhere.

Regarding tonights game, how about a 360* spin and a three at the buzzer to win it?

by unblinded on Nov 6, 2006 1:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

oh, ok then
Triple Singles is going to move to the bench...well, ok you guys are right. W's by 6.
:)
I'd actually rather see BD, Monta, Jrich, Barnes and Beans starting. Instead of Murph at the PF...he has really been struggling.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Since
I'm back now the Warriors will win. It was me being away that caused the lousy play.

This game will own
A great intro game to our complete blowout of the Hornets tomarrow, which I will see IN PERSON!

Quadruple overtime, Folye hits the game winning miracle from half court after all the other Centers are fouled out.

Time to collect money from our hoes.

PIETRUSSST
Pietrus plays bad when he starts.. we'll see today.. i actually likde dunleavy startin.. its just that these past games baron hasnt makin shots he was told to make thats why Dunleavy is playing point so baron cud get the ball at the low block and try to score of weaker defenders. but i guess not..

I trust Don Nelson tho.. we;ll see.. warriors win.. 2-2 mavs.. 0-3. lol i hoope

by straightfromthebay on Nov 6, 2006 3:55 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

the mavs
They have to be quite upset about the slow start and the blowout at the hands of houston. They must be licking their chops seeing the Warriors on their schedule especially after seeing the blowout in Utah.

Are the Warriors to the Mavs as the Trailblazers are to the Warriors? You know, that guaranteed win?

by Fantasy Junkie on Nov 6, 2006 3:59 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Mavs Moneyball
And if you get the chance, we should all talk a little trash over at fellow SB Nation site, Mavs Moneyball. Should be fun as we send them to 0-3.

you know how football teams ho lose in the superbowl laways have rough folowup seasons? are the mavs getting the same thing? And by the way, this is the night jrich puts up 30 and starts his all-star campagn

i dont think
we are winnning this game.  They lost to San Antonio  and Houston klobbered them, I think they are hungry for a win.  Plus those 2 teams they lost to are better than us, right now at leaset.  Do I have faith? ya a bit since we did beat them 3or4 times last year or whatever

by djchuckdeez on Nov 6, 2006 5:20 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Whoa!
MP2's gonna guard Dirk to open up the game? Dirk's got a HUGE height advantage. I thought Murph did a pretty good job against Dirk last season though.

Predictions

  • Ike's going to have a good game 16-8 or so
  • Monta's going to hit 20
  • JRich is going to come back
  • Baron's going to be in All Star form tonight

Yeah
Seriously. Anybody hear about David Stern telling Mark Cuban that he can't be in the huddles of his team and stuff anymore either? Insane.

by mistererickk on Nov 6, 2006 6:27 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Stupid, really
I think the best reason Mark Cuban gave was that he hired Avery Johnson because of how he talked in the huddle. Thats something you can't determine without being with the team.

I hope Mark Cuban can find a way around this. Lol he could have a two way TV screen of himself be there at every huddle. while he sit in the stands with a camera pointed at him for the two way screen. Don't be surprised if it happens.

by Zorgon on Nov 6, 2006 6:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

what if
he made himslef assistant coach or sumthing? he might do that just to get in the huddles.

they tried their best to give it away, but the w is really all that matters. too many turnovers but still able to pull it out. i would say that this is a confidence booster but i've learned the past few years that these warriors are extremely inconsistent. let's pray for this same thing tomorrow.

This is the deal...
fast break and Warriors got the numbers...Ellis goes up and terry came from other side of court to "contest" shot and damn near wrapped a clothesline on his ass. Almost like a headlock...
Down goes Ellis but he gets up and hit the FTs and the rest is history

monta hit head on knee
when monta was assaulted by terry, his head was knocked straight down, but hit a warriors knee on the way down, ricocheting (?) his head onto the floor...thats why it hurt so bad.

Definitely the case
Mavs fans aren't real big fans of NBA officials these days.

by Wes Cox on Nov 6, 2006 9:08 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Why I thought the Warriors could win...
  1. The Mavs didn't want to reveal their banner in front of rival Spurs and Tim Duncan.. but instead, let's raise it in front of The Oakland Warriors. NOT COOL!
  2. When they tried to reveal the banner it got stuck. For a good 20 seconds, only part of the banner was revealed and it was an obvious embarrassing moment.
  3. We always play Dallas good (ok, only last season)
  4. I'm dumb enough to believe the Warriors can and will win every game they play.
ON another note:
I like how the last 3 Warrior shots are HORRIBLE!!
nothing going to the hoop... fade away jumpers and three pointers...and you know why...cuz Baron and J-Rich don't want to risk a trip to the free throw line.
Very unfortunate...Anyway....

I'M THROWING UP THE W!!!

by Skeptic con Urquell on Nov 6, 2006 8:21 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

A Great Idea
How about Dunleavy and Mario Elie swap places? Mario Elie would be a useful addition coming off the bench, helping Baron with the ball handling duties, as he played 48 minutes tonight. And Dunleavy can spend some quality time the one responsible for his wealth, Chris Mullin. Nellie, make it work!

BTW, great game!

man, next time I bet on the Dubs, I'm coming to GSoM!

Yeah, go Warriors!  Eat that Dallas.  I had class and was checking my fantasy league stats.  Total double-take on the score next to my man, Pietrus' line.  I had some low expectations.  Let's build on this, Nellie!

by walkerp on Nov 6, 2006 8:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

johnson got ejected
in the in the first half. I think he's the first coach ejected this year, and terry got ejected to, i dunno if u saw that. To tell you the truth, I though nelly was oushing for a T on that blocking foul on jrich when monta was halfway to hell by the time the whislte blew, but that was a dumb call so i don't blame him

by mydedgerbil555 on Nov 6, 2006 8:23 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

shame on me!
I admit it...i didn't have much faith that the W's would win this one. Great game from BD and Beans...I hate to nitpick a nice win like this but a couple things:
  1. Jrich...dude give up the rock. He shot like 3-4 bricks down the stretch. Could have cost them the game.
  2. why no foul at the end of the game? Why on earth would you let them attempt those 3's?? We should have learned that lesson last year.
Nice win though...i love it!

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

by OaktownFunk on Nov 6, 2006 8:34 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

agree
  1. definitely, although if those shots go in like they did a lot last year no one says anything. i'd pin the passing problem more on monta.
  2. can't argue at all with this one. got away with it luckily but i thought that nellie would for sure want this done.

promising signs
i was asking yesterday if nellie would follow through with his threat to bench non performing players and hot damn there was dunleavy benching it most of the game.  i love, love, love monta more each game.  he was tough as nails at the end of the game, shaking off the damage and hitting his free throws as well as hitting those threes.  baron looked....great but still sketchy a lot of times, a lot of his shots looked pretty forced to me.  hell, i'm just happy to see eveyone playing so tough.  and please give murphy some love.
