Rumor: Mike Dunleavy Sr. Trying to Clear Cap Space for Mike Dunleavy Jr.

Yes, you read the correctly. From David Aldridge of the Philadelphia Inquirer:

The Clippers are a long shot at the moment to acquire Iverson. Los Angeles has offered Corey Maggette, Cuttino Mobley and Sam Cassell, but the 76ers still want Livingston, a 21-year-old who is being groomed to replace the 37-year-old Cassell at the point in the next couple of years.

Coach Mike Dunleavy is pushing to make a deal, in part, so he can clear enough cap room to acquire his son, Mike Dunleavy Jr., from the Warriors. But he and Clippers management are not ready to part with Livingston.

Even if you're the world's biggest Mike Dunleavy Jr. fan you can't help but crack up at the notion that someone is trying to clear cap room to get him. One word: INSANE. Teams clear cap room for stars and players who can make a big impact. Clearing room for Dunleavy is equivalent to opening up cap space to take on a guy like Luke Walton. It's more foolish than dishing out those big money contracts to Foyle, Dunleavy, and Murphy.

Anyhow, reuniting Dunleavy Jr. with Dunleavy Sr. in La-La land has been rumored to happen for some time now. It's no secret that the Clips and Corey Maggette are looking to part ways too. Maggette is a slasher who attacks the basket, rebounds, and get this- actually knocks down free throws at a high percentage. If it wasn't for the money issues and the fact that Elgin Baylor isn't a fool, Dunleavy for Maggette probably would have gone down by now. Still, both players need a change of scenery badly, so there might be more potential for this trade scenario than we could begin to fathom.

KEEPS LOOKING BETTER AND BETTER. magette wants out, dunleavy sr. wants dunleavy jr. P J brown wants out, and they want troy murphy and they are still looking for a way to get a big sg. Iverson will play wherever he is sent, an angry iverson is better then no iverson, and he will learn to love the bay area like ron artest loves sacramento. do u seriously think if iverson got sent to goldenstate, he will pout and say, "no, i will not play because i was sent to the west." HELL NO, iverson is a competitor so many days of sitting on his couch not playing basketball must be killing him.

How many Maggettes?

If the Clips trade Maggette to the Sixers, who do the Warriors get for Dunleavy (who had a Maggette-like game last night, and can play well coming off the bench)? BTW, Luke Walton is quietly having a pretty good year thus far -- and has been a real factor in the Lakers' ability to play good ball when their key players are injured.

Maybe we need to conjure weird trades less, and focus on how this team can learn to play in the fourth quarter more. (Hello BD! It's your last, tho biggest, hurdle.) THAT'S the ticket.

Definitely. Luke's emergence is a big reason the Lakers are winning. I respect him as a player and his contributions, but he like Dunleavy aren't guys you create cap space for. I'd do a Dunleavy for Walton swap any day though. Luke is a better passer and shooter than Dun.

Maggette can consistently get you 20-6 every night with 10 trips to the charity stripe if you give him the minutes. No one on this roster can do that night in and night out. Dunleavy, Pietrus, and Barnes just aren't at that level.

Yep. That's the problem, and would be with Nellie at the helm. I'd trade Dun for Maggette for sure, but only because the team doesn't have a good enough three; but if we had one, I'd rather keep Dun to play sixth man.

BTW, who knows where that "clearing cap space" concept derives, since any AI trade has to be close to matching. And even if they clear space by packaging Maggette, who does that leave for us. A Walton-Dun trade, of course, makes little sense since they're both the same kind of players. I like both, but prefer Dun -- who I see as a better passer, slasher, ball-handler-- and is much more versatile.

Finally, do you agree that BD CAN learn to play at crunch time and CAN be the leader these guys need? I wouldn't have thought so three months ago; I do now. He must be tired himself of playing so well -- until the game's really on the line. He must want to elevate himself into the class of points. But he must step it up.

not a BD fan

as evidenced by my past rips on his lack of leadership last season, but given the minutes he's played, the numbers he's putting up, and the injuries around him it's really hard to put the onus of GS struggles thus far this season on him. I was worried about his attitude based on his post-game comments a couple games ago, and he could turn sour for sure if the ship isn't righted soon. But our problems do not all fall at his feet to be sure.

Mullin made this mess with the repeated mistakes on the contracts. Every NBA team has a bad contract or two, but none on our scale. I said it in July, and it's as true today as it was then, this roster needs churning. Start with whatever you need to, we're not going to the playoffs with this group ....

I think you're forgetting

about the Knicks. Nobody is even close to them for the amount of bad contracts they possess.

There are plenty of teams with bad contracts in this league. Our only really bad contracts are MD Jr and Foyle. Murph's is not a good one, but for his production and size it isn't really bad either. I think there are a few teams in this league that would take Murph on.

Hate to say I told you so..

BUT I'm glad you guys finally took my advice - push this trade. I've been telling everyone... Dun has to go, and not only would it be good for him to play with his dad, but it would be an awesome fit for both teams based on what we need. Maggette for Dun, simple. And honestly, as bad as I dislike Dunleavy, I think it would be great for him to seize the opportunity of playing for the man that raised him and taught him the game... it will be good for his career and we can stop feeling guilty about booing him.
