OPEN THREAD: GAME #28 - Warriors @ Magic

warriors@magic.jpeg

Warriors (W-L): 13-14

Magic (W-L): 17-10

Time: 4PM PST

TV: FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 1050

This afternoon the Dubs square off against one of the league's biggest surprises, the Orlando Magic. Normally I'd get to insert some Orlando Tragic joke here about losing Shaq, the Penny injuries, Grant Hill's ankle, trading away TMac for what ended up being nothing, or even Tree Rollins' "dominance"--

tmac-grant-hill.jpg
We almost had Jordan and Pippen 2.0, but they actually had Jordan and Pippen 3.0.

but with Dwight Howard manning their interior there's not much I can say but UH-OH. Seriously, can you believe this guy is only 22? He's not that much older than Andris Biedrins and he's actually younger than Monta Ellis. A few years from now, barring something Tragic, this is the league's MVP.

The Magic have won 12 of the past 13 games against the Warriors, so it's going to take a great team effort to get a W.

Worrier Injuries

  • Monta Ellis is a game time decision, but if I'm Nellie I let the kid sit this one out. It's going to be a tough win, a tough game to keep close even, and 3 turnovers in 5 minutes won't cut it.
  • JRich will play today, but not in tomorrow's matchup against the Heat as a precautionary measure. If he goes 4 for 19 again, it's going to be long, long night.
  • TMurph's in LA-LA land seeing a foot specialist. On a side note, why isn't he seeing someone in the Bay? Everyone knows the best doctors in the world are in the Yay Area.
  • Zarko Cabarkapa (remember him?) is in LA awaiting lower-back surgery next Tuesday.

But no excuses. The Tragic (you knew I'd sneak that in!) won't have Hedo Turkoglu and Keith Bogans. Jameer Nelson is a game time decision as well. And Grant Hill, well who knows what will happen to the man. Will he be chilling with Tamia tonight or chilling with the fellas?

Big shout out to Grant Hill's legendary Fila kicks (almost as fly as gear at the GSoM Store) and blogger diaper dandy Eduardo over at Magic FanAttic.

Vegas Odds: Magic by 4.5

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 1
  • The BoomRich backcourt DOMINATES the Magic.
  • Dwight Howard goes for 20-20 on the Warriors "tough" interior and sprinkles in 3 swats.
  • Travis Diener has a career night. (Don't ask "Who?" because you'll remember that name after today.)
  • Grant Hill has himself a nice 20 ounce bottle of Sprite after the game.

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

THROW UP A W!!

UPDATE:

Warriors WIN!! 117-108

Preview is up!
Hey everyone, Eduardo a.k.a. Eddy here from good ol' Magic FanAttic. Just wanted to let everyone know that the preview is up for my blog, so check it out!  I appreciate teaming up with this great community to have some friendly banter for tonight's game. It's going to be a doozy and you'll know Dwight Howard will be looking to dunk on a poor Warriors player tonight after getting posterized by CP3 Tuesday night.

Hey
don't call the Magic "Tragic". Out of the 4 1988 expansion franchises, they've been second best, barring last seasons Heat championship.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have gotten to the West finals, but everyone can agree that they finish in a nice 4th.

The Charlotte Hornets have had their years, but they were always stopped by injuries or Mr.Jordan. Lately with all of the moving, they haven't accomplished much other than a good guard and a injury-laden team. 3rd.

The Orlando Magic have had an all Star team worth of superstars. Thick of C- Shaq, PF-Howard, SF-Hill, SG-McGrady, PG-Penny. That would destroy all of the other franchises all-time teams. Granted, they have had bad luck, but it's not liek their management is bad or anything. It's just bad luck. A NBA Finals appearance in 1994, only 6 years after they entered the NBA is not Tragic at all 2nd.

The Miami Heat had Tim Hardaway and P.J. Brown, but no finals until last year, in which they established themsevles as #1.

But there is one thing I DO agree with...GRANT HILL DRINKS SPRITE!

Touche'
Just a few corrections, the Magic went to the NBA Finals in 1995. I was .. 8 years old when my "dream team" made the NBA Finals. Shoot, I remember I was more ecstatic beating MJ and the mighty Bulls before facing off against the Rockets. Had it not been Nick Anderson missing his four free throws at the end of the game, we would have won Game 1 and probably the series. I remember the team being SO devastated. The team was so young (even with Horace Grant, he was still 29 at the time) .. ugh, what a shame.

We've had our moments, everyone thought that we would return to the elite when we signed Hill/T-Mac .. well, what worked out.

I think we're getting there with our team. D-Howard is slowly healing our wounds with Shaq (finally, some closure). Our team is young, exciting to watch, disciplined, everyone loves Brian Hill as coach, I can't be any happier with the Magic.

Barring what I said about Anderson earlier, they need to retire his jersey!

I think...
the Knicks or the Lakers would have a better ALL-time lineup. They definately have had a Hall of Fame team worth of SUPERstars.

i'm not trying to knock on your comment or anything, just my two cents.

Gack
I kinda meant the 4 expansion franchises, not all NBA. Sorry bout that....

ohhhhh nonono
my bad. I didnt carefully read your initial comment. hmm... yeah I agree with you Zorgon, out of the expansion teams... Orlando and Houston have had some pretty crazy all-time rosters.

my prediction
dwight howard outrebounds the warriors by himself

by AJC3317 on Dec 22, 2006 2:05 PM PST reply actions

i'll one up that prediction
I think D Howard will have more OFFENSIVE rebounds that the entire W's squad has total rebounds. If they don't attack the defensive glass with every guy...well, Howard is going to eat them alive.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Man, I wish I could see it
I have to go to a hornets game.

Warriors lose 103-89 (without me tooing for them, of course)

Even though....
The Magic have won 12 of the last 13... is it just me or was that one win we had by like 45 or something like that? I remember we blew someone out a couple years ago in the beginning of a season and I have a vague memory of it being the Magic.

magic go'n inside at will
... and, that's with our vaunted inside defender in the game (sigh)

by hardcore on Dec 22, 2006 4:36 PM PST reply actions

2nd to last play of Qtr
illuminates why Foyle cannot be involved in offense - even when he sets a pick and roll, the defense IGNORES him, and when the ball is thrown to him it goes off his hands (argh!!!!)

why isn't he on the OTHER side of the floor, where he can space the defense and crash the weakside board??? Why aren't the Warriors using two players in the pick & roll?

Missed the early-ish game but the comments sure make it look like a fun comeback.

by SkipT on Dec 22, 2006 7:06 PM PST reply actions

That was
an incredible game. What a comeback from trailing for 3 quarters. What a game for Foyle, and I screamed when Dun hit those 3s. Baron, Foyle or Dun for Warrior Wonder.

poor pietrus
i hope he's okay after getting clocked in the nose TWICE by D-Ho's elbows. Ooh that rhymed. he was havin' such a good nite with the D and not settling for threes.

pietrus is broken
poor pietrus

i hope he's okay after getting clocked in the nose TWICE by D-Ho's elbows.

"And they did that after losing Andris Biedrins to a scary fall and Mickael Pietrus to a broken nose early in the fourth quarter"

oouch, that sucks if for no other reason then its gonna seriously mess with his "french sexy".

by Zardoz on Dec 22, 2006 11:35 PM PST up reply actions

I can't believe
I missed a 8 point, 6 rebound FOYAL night. And I missed it for some scrub Hornets-Grizzlies game! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

by Zorgon on Dec 22, 2006 9:16 PM PST reply actions

The FOYALed one played
very well tonight after key injuries.

Pietrus kept getting knocked in the face by Howard 's space jam monster elbows, and Darko was giving AB hell, ending with him landing flat on his tailbone after one play.

Adonal was part of three big plays down the stretch. An easy put back after an offensive rebound, an overplay on Howard that turned into a steal and fastbreak going the other way, and a run down the ball-> kickout to Dunleavy who did a touch shot 3 as the shot clock was at 1(which Dun banked in).

If Davis didn't get 38 and 8, ADONAL FOYAL = Warrior Wonder!

He also got a post game interview on TV with Dunleavy and by Jim Barnett.

by back2back51s on Dec 22, 2006 10:21 PM PST up reply actions

play of the night:
Foyle chasing down a long rebound w/ about 5 seconds left on the clock, dishes to Dun, and lets it fly to hit a banking 3 just as the clock buzzes!!

Just hope they can continue to find ways to score and hit their freethrows down the stretch.

Guys this is a family show. I know everyone gets excited in the heat of the game, but please, please refrain from swearing at people or swearing unnecessarily.

There's a lot of young, impressionable minds reading GSoM and we want to ensure that this is a safe, fun place.

Thanks for the link
Ouch for MP2/LLCOOLP/Air France and Biedrins.

The story also had a couple more great Nellie quotes.

"Yeah, break up the Warriors," coach Don Nelson said with a smile.

And also even Don knows the reason why we won the game, the Foyled one!

Nelson even called Foyle's performance the reason the Warriors won the game.
