Rumor: 76ers Contacted Warriors, Sonics, and Nuggets about an Allen Iverson Deal
Well it looks like Peter Vecsey's article about Allen Iverson wanting out of Philly has some merit. One of our sources has confirmed that the Sixers have indeed contacted four or five teams about moving AI. Three of the confirmed teams are the Golden State Warriors, the Denver Nuggets, and the Seattle Sonics. This doesn't necessarily mean that any of these teams are interested, rather that the Sixers front office has contacted them to gauge their interest. It seems safe to say that the 76ers like some pieces on the Warriors, Nuggets (aside from Carmelo Anthony since he's obviously not going anywhere), and Sonics.
Let's flip the script a little bit. If you were the 76ers what would you want from the Warriors in a deal for Allen Iverson?

i'd trade monta for iverson if...
foyle, dun, zarko, mcleoud, and monta
for
iverson, and steven hunter
or
foyle, dun, zarko, and monta
for
iverson, and rodney carney
Both of these trades work on the espn trade machine. Iverson is unstoppable alone, but if you team him up with baron, we will never have an offensive drought ike we did in houston and san antonio. And don't give me the crap about iverson being a ball hog, he scores cuz he has to, but once iverson gets accustomed to don nelson's system, we'll be unstoppable.

who's in the driver's seat?
Honestly Atma, it's hard for me to see AI, BD, and JRich all playing at the same time, and that amount of $$$ locked in at 1-2-3 would preclude getting a quality big man that we deserately need. BD would have to be the one to go - we can't let Monta go at his age, price, and potential (a year ago, hell a month ago I wouldn't've written that) and JRich is now hurt and probably not tradeable.
We could use the opportunity to unload a big contract (or two?) but Philly would need a PG, so Murphy, Dunleavy, Foyle, ect. just aren't likely to be in this mix because unless we're giving up Monta - it's tough to move those contracts. Monta and Murphy, and Foyle for Iverson - would Philly bite? I wouldn't. Too much baggage.
Baron and Ike, or Zarko, or MP works though. And Philly might go for that. Basically, do we want to trade Baron for Iverson?
Yes. And Philly can't do better than BD from Denver, Seattle, or LAL.
Iverson wants to win, he's a warrior by definition and he'd have a chip on his shoulder to prove what he can do. Would he want to come to GS??? Nelson would have to whoo him. Iverson and Monta, then when healthy Iverson & JRich is as potent as Baron and JRich. Though Baron is younger, they have the same years on their contracts. Will Baron get better than he is now? Will he be better at 31 than Iverson at 34? Will he make Monta better?
Who better for Monta to play with/behind than AI?
Nelson's call. Who do you want Don, AI or Baron?

Developing News
Iverson HAS asked for a trade.
The team IS aggressively pursuing deals.
Lastly, and probably most telling, Iverson has "probably" (his words) played his last game for the Sixers.
Because Iverson is only scheduled to miss the next two games, the situation would have to resolve itself by this weekend.
As for what JB said, giving up Baron for Iverson makes the trade a wash for me. They bring similar things to the table and it probably isn't worth ruining the current locker room chemistry, while bringing in a known coach killer. Trading Pietrus or Dunleavy would let us slide J-Rich to the 3, while still leaving backup minutes at the 1 and 2 for Monta ILLEST. Viva la Warriors!

Earth to "traders". . . .
- Billy King wants nothing the W's would like to dump. He wants expiring contracts (we have none of real value), young stars (oh yeah -- trade Monta and/or AB for Iverson -- who NEVER wins anything, tho he sure looks good scoring at his 40% rate), and draft choices (we sure want to give up our lottery slots, right?). Just because we'd like to peel off some baggage -- BD, Murph, Dun, JRich, Foyle -- doesn't mean anyone else wants it. Geez, Mullin couldn't GIVE Murphy away this summer, and it wasn't for want of trying; Dun's base year and virtually untradeable, Baron's got that killer $17 million multi-year price tag, Foyle can't average five minutes on a poor team, and even JRich, with his multiple knee injuries, has shown almost nothing this year (tho at least the W's have finally sat him down so he won't get worse).
- AI is little more than a better scoring BD who is older and less able to be the playmaker BD has shown hecan be. The only way to get those two on the floor together -- assuming the W's wouldn't be stupid enough to trade BD for AI -- would be to play with two balls. In fact, AI creates the same insurmountable problem BD presented last year (and still does at crunch time this year) of hogging the ball and just pounding it while all others are forced to stand and watch. AI's never been a team player -- for three games straight, anyway -- and never been a winner, except when he was held somewhat in control at Georgetown and that one year when the NBA was simply terrible.
- What the W's need is not a six foot, aging ball hog; they need a good "four" -- of which several should be available -- and/or a slashing three. In short, AI can be fun to watch at times, but mainly when he's playing for some other team. A steady diet of his play would cause nausea in any fan of team basketball.

what Billy wants ...
sure, we'd like expiring contracts too, so would every GM in the league, but he's in a tighter bind now than he was last summer ... hindsight he should have taken the draft-day offer from Boston, and they still are talking ...
trading BD for AI isn't stupid, and it's probably the only way this trade gets made. AI is the better player, may be Baron sustains his playing level longer since he's younger but he's also a ticking time bomb in injuries and leadership conflicts. Monta with AI is pretty dynamic, whether JRich is SG or SF when healthy. We would not lose much in this trade and the potential is the playoffs. That's reason enough to pull the trigger...
I agree with your third point, but the AI -BD trade would not preclude getting a quality big since both contracts are 3 years and similar dollars

Here's my thoughts.
Otherwise, I'd bundle up Foyle and Dun/murph with maybe a pietrus. I we got a whole lot of forwards to look forward to.

If you take a look out of your windows, you can now see Dallas, TX. Quite the site, no?

Uh-oh
BUT it almost gaurantees that the Warriors won't sniff the playoffs this season.
The West looks like this right now:
- Utah
- San Antonio
- LA Lakers
- Dallas
- Houston
- Phoenix
- Denver
- LA Clippers
- NO/ OKC
- Warriors

Check out the AP Report
"I think it's time for him to move on, for us to move on and find out where everything stands," Snider said. "I really didn't see it coming because Allen says all the right things."
I hope the Warriors can pull this one off. It would change the face of the franchise forever.

maybe Boston, not likely Minny ...
Boston Herald: "The Celtics are very much back in the hunt for Allen Iverson. According to league sources, the Celts were on the phone to the 76ers as soon as they learned that Iverson and Philadelphia had reached a point of no return. "
AI is NOT going to Minnesota, see GM's comments:
"No trade," Taylor said during the Wolves' 110-103 victory over Utah on Friday night at Target Center. "It isn't that I don't like him. Just money-wise, it wouldn't work out."

Great minds think alike
Also, from a pure basketball standpoint, lineup you posted
Iverson/McCloud
Ellis/Roberson
JRich/Dun?barnes
Webber/Diogu
Biedrins/POB
would be a heck of a lot of fun -- er, "hella fun" -- to watch.

24 hours later...
Case in point, last year, by all accounts Ron Artest was ours for the taking. All that held the deal up was the inclusion of one of our young pieces, Ellis or Diogu. Mullin backed away from that deal, so why would he make one a year later with the same but much improved players? Sure you could make the argument that the risk factor between Iverson and Artest is what could potentially cause one deal to go through and one not to, but it is much, much closer than one would initially think. Ron Artest plays the 3, is by and large the best bargain in the NBA today ($7.5 mill), and a shutdown defender of the rarest kind. Meanwhile, Iverson is an old, injury-riddled 31 years old and has run off Brown, Ayers, O'Brien, Ford, and alienated Cheeks, a man they brought in largely because of his excellent relationship with The Answer.
Obviously, there are benefits to each player. My point is that if Mullin wouldn't make this kind of a splash last year, why would he do it now? I would love to eat some crow on this matter, but I just thought I should temper my own expectations. The Warriors have broken my heart before, and sometimes it's hard to wake up in the morning knowing that Todd Fuller is not walking through that door to save us...
