Efficiency Per Minute
I figured I'd kick off the diary writing with a case for why Montgomery is mis-allocating his players and they're minutes.
I went to NBA.com and pulled some Warriors stats. I calculated the efficiency of each player and ended up with nothing too interesting.
Dividing the efficiency by minutes played was a little more enlightening.
Below are the 12 players who have gotten at least some significant time (I left out Taft and Miles).
Davis: .521
Murphy: .508
Richardson: .497
Diogu: .474
Biedrins: .461
Foyle: .414
Fisher: .397
Cabarkapa: .376
Dunleavy: .357
Pietrus: .342
Ellis: .326
Cheaney: .203
Looking at the list I would say that it is slightly skewed towards the forward/center types. Most likely because they rack up rebounds at a much greater rate and blocks, while the guards go rebounds and steals. Still I am impressed with Murphy, who I hate on to anyone who'll listen.
The most notable thing is the lack of production from the SF spot. Neither Dunleavy nor Pietrus is putting up more numbers than Zarko. Absurd. But for those pulling for Dunleavy to be replaced, this seems to indicate that neither one of them is pulling his own weight (which I hate to admit, because I'm a Dunleavy backer). This seems to suggest that Fish should see much more time than he does at the 3.
It also makes me question even more Montgomery's decision to ever play Ike at the C when Biedrins has such good numbers. Why not run Murphy + Foyle (combined Eff/M = .922) and sub Ike + Biedrins (combined Eff/M = .935) for two complimentary combinations with little drop-off in quality. (Personally, I would play Ike+Andris as the starters so that Murphy can get his touches and not have to defer to Baron + J-Rich. But as I noted earlier, I'm not a Murphy fan and it's probably just my bias).
There are obviously some issues with this. Quality of minutes is not taken into account (i.e. garbage at the end of the game), nor is defense. And perhaps Andris' foul problems prevent Montgomery from using him as I suggest.
But it's some food for thought...

Formula
(pts + reb + stl + blk) - (fg missed + ft missed + to) = eff
I think some others that I've seen include like % of 3 pointers vs. regular field goals. This one was simple and, though, and I got it from a legit source...
