NBA Draft 2006: YOUR GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS TAKE...

Patrick O'Bryant!

David Stern called this the #10th pick when it was the 9th. Did the Warriors mess up again? Stern seems to have alluded to that.

The ESPN Analysts referred to the 12 year streak. Make that 13...

Also, Chris listened to Golden State of Mind readers AGAIN!

Stay tuned! More information on our newest Warrior to come...

lame
...we need another 7 footer project with great hands and quick feet like we need a hole in the head.  should have gotten carney or brewer.

We need some shot blocking and rebounding...
...and some cheesecake. Jesus wept.

Biedrins and OB
Two projects at Center. Looks like Adonal is our starting C again. Way to go Mully.

Black Biedrins!
I can't wait to hear Jim Barnett talk about how good O'Bryant is going to be in 2010.
Still annoyed that we drafted Tod Fuller

They say he's a good chef
Aw man, if he's like Dampier that's going to be a lot of fattening food. PRAY there's a trade in the works.

by Atma Brother ONE on Jun 28, 2006 5:38 PM PDT   0 recs

praying...
i'll just add that prayer to my other long list of prayers for things the I wish the Warriors would do.

The Farm
I know we have Monty, but damn- this ain't The Farm.

More projects than school!

  • Ike
  • Biendrins
  • Dunleavy
  • Monta
  • Taft
  • Zarko

Monty Can't Be Happy
I can't imagine that adding somebody who is unlikely to contribute next year works for Monty.  This pick puts Monty one step closer to the unemployment line after or during next season.

HAHAHA
Does his head need to get bigger too?

by Atma Brother ONE on Jun 28, 2006 5:55 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

This is ridiculous
I seriously don't know what good this does the Warriors. I don't think anyone wanted this guy but us...it almost pisses me off. There better be a huge trade coming our way....these rumors just built us up for another disappointing season.

by Inno on Jun 28, 2006 5:50 PM PDT   0 recs

Pray man
To Mullin's credit he's been reportedly been working the phones.

Unfortunately he doesn't really have much to offer.

God, the Warriors make me mad...
Tell me why they take O'Bryant. As you've all said already, just another project. Why don't they make a trade to get some veteran experience inside? And no, Adonal Foyle doesn't count as veteran experience.

This is so bad that I'm almost laughing...
We're building a great history of picking shitty draft picks. It's amazing to think that next year, when we have the 9th pick again...we're gonna take another "big man" that will continue to extend our bench.

by Inno on Jun 28, 2006 6:14 PM PDT   0 recs

Next year
The #9 pick is a pretty reasonable prediction for the Warriors.

So Much For The Lucky #9 Pick...
I can't wait to see him playing for us with a giant contract when he's thirty and he has long been labled a bust!

by thebigva on Jun 28, 2006 8:42 PM PDT   0 recs

Another f'in project
The only reason selected a big man makes sense is if they honestly think that he can walk in and command minutes from day one.  Granted we don't have a shot blocker on the roster, but with O' Bryant's slight frame he is at least two years away from being anything but a liability on the court.  POB will bring some lateral movement and off the ball shot blocking, which the W's have been lacking for...ever, but any 5 with decent size is going to force the W's into a double team and chase situation.  With our defense which hardly slows down teams that don't demand double teams this is a major problem.  The most glaring need on the team (that can be filled) is at the 3 spot.  Dunleavy is limited offensively and a liability defensively.  A guy like Brewer would have made sense and allowed some flexibility to deal the current 3's on the roster for something easily as serviceable as what we will get from O'Bryant for the next two years.

Here's to a Beans/POB/Taft tandem combining to be league average in 2011.  Fuck!

Back away from the ledge
Here's a news flash.  It is almost impossible to get a good center to come to GSW as a free agent.  We can't offer them more money, our housing is crazy expensive, CA has high state/sales tax, and the team has been terrible for over a decade.  We have no choice but to try and get the NBA's rarest commodity through the draft.  Every other position in the NBA is dime a dozen.  O'Bryant may not become a star, but what choice did they have?  Center is obviously our weakest spot on the team, and Biedrins hasn't show much improvement since he's been here.

I actually think that he can "walk in and command minutes from day one".  He has 3 things none of our big men have; good hands, can run the floor, and can shoot FTs.  Watch how good he looks catching passes/alley oops from Baron off his penetration.  Don't forget, we're talking about a kid who just turned 20, and will be physically maturing over the next 2 years.  I expect him to be a big improvement over what we currently have.

by chrisz42 on Jun 29, 2006 9:30 AM PDT   0 recs

LOL!
Now we're using California's expensive real estate and taxes as an excuse for the W's pisspoor drafting technique? Doesn't seem to hurt the Bay Area's other sports franchises (except the A's) when it comes to luring talent via free agency...

Gotta love it.

My Thoughts on the Draft
Patrick O'Bryant will be a bust.

First of all, the guy played at Bradley in the MVC, which is a conference that I don't even know what the initials stand for.  He didn't dominate some crap conference.  He had a few good games in the tournament, that's it.  Whoopideedoo.

Patrick O'Bryant tested as one of the WORST athletes in the draft at the NBA combine.  He was the 18th ranked center.  His vertical jump, lane agility, and sprint were all poor.

Chris Mullin did not see him work out in person until the day before the actual draft.  Wow, it seems like they did a lot of research and really studied this guy since they decided to wait until a day before the draft.  It seems like Mullin read all of the mock drafts and saw that the majority of them had him picking O'Bryant so he decided maybe he should check the guy out.

O'Bryant himself said he was a project.

At least the Warriors draft was better than the Knicks.

Oh yah...
And do you realize that if the Warriors had lost ONE more game instead of going on another meaningless winning streak that the end of another dissappointing season, they could have drafted Rudy Gay?  They tied with Houston and then lost the tie breaker so we got 9 instead of 8.  Or if they had lost 2 games, it would have been the 6th pick.  Choice between Roy, Foye, and Gay.
