NBA Draft 2006: Warrior Wrapup

It was oh so close! Warriors Nation almost had Gay in the Bay, but ended up with 7-0, 250 pound, 19 year old Center Patrick O'Bryant from Bradley with the #9 pick and 7-2, 240 pound, 21 year old Center Kosta Perovic from Serbia with the #38 pick.

#9 pick Patrick O'Bryant aka "The Chef" already seems more agile than the current Warrior centers!

#48 pick Kosta Perovic is... flexible!

We'll be dropping information about the Warriors' new twin towers in the near future, so keep checking back.

Post any information you can find on our two newest Warriors in the comments section or start a diary. Also, vote on how you think the Warriors did in the 2006 NBA Draft to the right.

Stay tuned all off season long for more rumors, the latest on Warrior trades (probably after July 1st), report cards, and some special interviews with some surprise friends...

For those in Warriors Nation who are little upset about how the Warriors did today, sleep well knowing this:

Looking like a bad draft
I just heard the audio interviews with O'Bryant that they had on the Warriors website...and it's just depressing. The guy doesn't seem remotely interested in being here...no one knows who he is...he didn't even know what he could improve on besides his strength...it just seems so very wrong.

We've been here before, fellas
This team falls in love with these guys for all the wrong reasons.  Warriors needed size, so they go for the size, regardless of the talent still available on the board.

Truly a mediocre, mindnumbing, boring draft.  But it's really what we've all come to expect from the Warriors, no matter who's the GM.  But, we shoulda just kept Garry St. Jean on the payroll if we're still making lame picks like this.  I expected better from Mullin, but i'm squarely in the "he's not gonna get it done" camp now.

Houston was willing to deal
All it took was Shane Battier to pry Gay away?  Come on, Mullin, you can do better than that.

Seriously
I was thinking the exact same thing when it happened.

I Like the Centers
I think the W's made excellent choices. Apparently (Hopefully) they finally realized they were never going to reach the playoffs with Adonyl Foyle at Center. While I think Andris is an excellent potential Center, he's about 2-3 seasons away from true playoff-level performance. With his propensity to foul, the W's need solid backup at the Center position. They now have two true Centers that they can evaluate and utilize.

Next steps? Trade BD while he still has value...One more season like the last two and he's going to plummet even more in terms of value and the W's will completely lose their investment....Pick up a solid playoff-level contender....Say....Shawn Marion....Jermaine O'Neal?

Why?
I think O'Bryant projects to be the starter with Biendrins backing him up.  I'm not at all thrilled with the POB pickup but he does give us a guy at the five position that can move with some sense of fluidity.  Biendrins moves around so awkwardly it is hard to envision him becoming a force in the middle, a solid backup is probably his ceiling.  I will give Mully the benefit of the doubt on the POB pick because I think he realizes the team needs a shot blocker to erase some of the horrid perimeter defense and keep the W's in some games.  The problem I have is that Bryant and Biendrins are going to take 2-3 years to develop NBA bodies and we are still looking at Foyle as the starter.  I would have preferred to go with Andris and Taft, while picking up a swingman (Brewer or Carney) at #9.

The second round pick looks like a throw away.  I assume they will retain the rights and have the guy continue to develop in Europe, but the guy is a useless stiff, which no organization in the NBA knows better than the warriors.  After last years second round picks of I was expecting a little more.  I haven't looked at the fifteen man roster in a while but it seems like there would be room to carry two draft picks without giving up anything of substance.

I hate to do this but somebody has to bring it up.  If the Warriors had tanked down the stretch last year they would have been looking at the #7 pick and Brandon Roy or Rudy Gay to step in and play the 3.

Frankly,
The W's wasted the #9 overall pick if all they wanted was a backup center project. Trade the hell down and grab him later.
