Michael Pietrus Interview on HoopsHype

It's a little messed up that Warrior swingman Mickael Pietrus took the time to do an interview and they misspelled his name, but the interview is still an interesting read. Here's a highlight:

I want to be a Warrior for as long as possible. Hopefully I can stay with them for the next six or seven years. My goal is to help them achieve great things and be the best team possible because we have some great fans who deserve to see us do well for them.
Do you want Mickael Pietrus to be a Warrior for the next six or seven years?

Ehhh....
These guys are trained to say that stuff....this kid only cares about PT. Im sure he likes living and playing here 'cause we all know The Town is the place to be, but if he were getting 40 MPG in ATL he would "want to retire a Hawk"

Contract
I only want him here for a reasonable contract. If he wants more than 3 or 4 million a year, forget about it.

Let's see
MP was positively horrible last year.  He never developed the ability to finish those otherwise gorgeous drives.  He didn't improve his three-point shot.  And worst of all, his defense -- once his strength -- absolutely sucked.  He seemed lost, without energy -- viryually worthless.  What has been lacking is (1) determination, (2) acknowledgment of his weaknesses and the desire to work to overcome them, and (3) the ability to THINK on the floor (sometimes he looks like a total idiot out there -- and he's been around long enough to know better.)
To be sure, this kid has talent -- but all the W's have (some) talent.  Now he's got to show he can play the game -- and play a TEAM game.  If he can do that, he'll be invaluable as a swing, particularly off the bench; if not, it should be "Aloha on the steel guitar" for the guy.  Let's hope for the former, but MP's history (especially last year) makes this a slim reed to cling onto.

Definitely
I agree with everything you pointed out, especially the frustration watching him drive/ glide so well to the basket, but not finishing.

I don't think his D dropped off that dramatically last season. There were times when he was still the shut down defender.

I also blame Monty's poor coaching and strange usage of MP2 for a lot of the struggles.

Who else wants him?
MP game including his defense went way down last year.  Matt Steinmetz went over his frustrating performance last season in a 680 Razor and Mr T interview last month.

We don't need to worry about keeping MP.  I don't see anyone making him a offer that we couldn't easily match under the FA NBA rules.  I'd put him out there and let him earn his contract.

Good SGs are not that hard to find in the late 1st or 2nd round.  Defensive SG/SF Trenton Hassell and Gilbert Arenas went the same year 1 and 2 in the 2nd round. Michael Redd went mid 2nd round.

He was bad
but i feel really sorry for MP.  He has had to make the adjustment to the US game, play on a bad team (no offense, but we are a bad team), and deal with a head coach that couldnt figure out a rotation in 2 years.  As much as I love JR, he isnt the guy to take MP2 under his wing and help him improve his game. That being said, MP could have overcame, made the most of the minutes he got, and become a lock for the SF spot.  Not everything is his fault, but alot is.  He can only do so much about talent, but he can always control effort.  As long as he returns to next season, gives it his all, I think hes worth resigning.  It wouldnt be the worst extension W's have signed.....in the past 3 years
Hopefully playing in the world championships this summer will give him the motivation he needs, im really pulling for this guy to turn his game around
Well theres always next year x12

If you're feeling sorry...
...then take a look at his contract!

His defense
If his defense was better, it didn't show up statistically.  I suspect that while the ball is in play, he may well be a fine defender, but he had a propensity for fouls that negated an otherwise good effort and at the forward slot, he's a pathetic rebounder.  Allowing the other team to outrebound you means that your defense has to be much, much better because they're going to get many chances to score.

Pietrus was terrible.  He didn't shoot well and he didn't stop the other team from scoring.  Add in that his play was stupid and he was turnover prone and I just don't see why we'd want to invest anything in him.

it depends...
if he agrees to sign for maybe a 3 year contract ranging from 3-4 million a year, then i think it's possible to keep him. if he wants anything more than that...i say let someone else overpay for him. the warriors can draft another perimeter player easily, 2 guards are a dime a dozen in this league. if he was taller and a little more polished offensively then i would say give him midlevel money. it's very rare to find players who really develop after the first 4 years in the league. it does happen, just not all that often...

the missing link
in an interview MP was not disappointed in his own contribution, but was disappointed that the team did not make the playoffs - I wonder if he recognizes the connection?
