Yi's a Sure Thing + Coast II Coast Bust

Tony Mejia of CBS SportsLine.com recently dropped an international scouting report based on FIBA 2006 tourney play in Coming to an NBA arena near you -- some sooner than later. Warriors Nation favorite Yi Jianlian is listed as a sure thing for the NBA:

Yi Jianlian, China: Loved his athleticism. That's what separates him from most prospects and makes him such a different player than Yao, who despite being a great athlete for his size, has nothing on this kid. The explosive Yi looked like he belonged, at least athletically, when placed on the court with the NBA guys. He's legit.
Like Hammer, Yi's 2 Legit 2 Quit! 2k7 should be Yi Time in the Bay. All part of the master blueprint...

Yi Dunks.jpg
Yi's a SLAM DUNK!

So how about the Dub's 2k6 2nd round draft pick Kosta Perovic aka Kosta Coast (nickname coined here at GSoM!)? Kosta made Mejia's Bubble Boys (50/50 shots) list:

Kosta Perovic, Serbia & Montenegro: He's 7-foot-1 and only 21, but he's also far away. He has barely gotten off the bench in Japan, and hasn't shown much when he has.

My take is Kosta's going to be bubbly bust. It's really sad the Warriors passed on local fav Leon Powe this past summer. It would have been the smart PR move, especially after drafting another project big man in the lottery, but this is an ownership and front office group that aren't exactly known for their smarts.

Hold up.
Since when is Yi Janilian a "Warrior Nation favorite"?  it seems that this is the only board that is all over his jock.  go to the RealGM or warriorsworld and you won't see anyone jockin this guy as much as this place.  so let's not speak for all Warrior fans, okay?

and since when is he a "sure thing"?  I hear this guy could already be 24 years old and he's just as skinny as Ally McBeil.

and finally, I like Leon Powe just as much anyone but can we not hancuff him to Kosta for the rest of their careers?  Powe is an undersized PF, like we need another one of those.  lets not bundle all the bitterness of passing on Powe and use it to rag on Perovic.  get over it.  Give Perovic a chance, lets watch him actually play backetball(which I doubt any of you have) before we call him a bust.

Missing the satire/ fun tone
Welcome to GSoM Bob!

I think you're missing the satire and fun tone of GSoM. There's a lot of serious analysis at GSoM mixed in with some jokes (or is it the other way around?- haha) This is a hype piece intended to give us all something to smile about in the middle of a very frustrating offseason.

And I am worried that Kosta can't even get minutes on his national team against inferior FIBA competition. That just doesn't bode well for the Warriors. My prediction (it's no fun if we don't predict) is that he's going to be a bust. I'm not saying that he is currently a bust.

Another thing I want to clarify- I don't think anyone's faulting POB and Kosta Coast for where they were drafted or the fact that they were drafted at all. Those are meant to be shots at the Warriors front office who seem clueless in drafting more projects.

As always, I hope I'm completely wrong and Kosta morphs into the next Dirk Nowitness.

Watch Kosta Play!
Okay I found this little "highlight" clip on Kosta. So now we can see a couple of his highlights since he's not playing during the FIBA tournament.

Listen to Fran Frischilla's analysis, it's not the most glowing report from someone who really knows his international prospects.

Risky but...
Powe is a feel good story but the Warriors' don't need another undersized PF.  Let's pine for him in March if he makes an impact.  I'm skeptical he's quick, durable and/or strong enough.

7' players take years to develop and refine. Kosta is 21 and isn't physically mature enough to play his position in the NBA or in high quality international competition. We shouldn't expect to see him impact his team -- it's good he's on the squad.

I'm not confident Kosta will pan out, that Mullin scouted him well, he has the athleticism or the personality for the NBA.  I do know GSW need height - badly.  I'd rather they take a half informed chance on a guy in a position they need with a 2nd round pick.  Mullin could have spend that pick on another undersized PF or SG/PG project.  I am glad he didn't.  GSW roster is too deep with modest talent already.

I saw Kosta!
He had about a 2 seond highlight on NBATV, where he rebounded the ball, then he jumped, and then he dunked it!  With 2 hands!  I stretched that out as long as I could.  And as much as I agree that Kosta may never end up playing a ton of minutes, the ability to consecutively rebound, jump, and dunk, rates his offensive game at least as high as adonal foyle.  As to Leon, anyone with a pulse should sympathize with his story and want the best for him, so maybe it isnt all bad that he didnt end up on the warriors.
Well theres always next year x12

You Gots to Chill
Well put Atma. There are a lot of blog sites out there that are full of negativity and people taking harsh shots at other users of the blog site. This is a kick back site and definitely does not fall into that category. The majority of the content contained in GSoM is not to be taken seriously. Sure Yi may be a bust in the future, but as a life-long Warriors fan, I'm not losing sleep over the fact that GSoM messes around and calls Yi part of the "Master Plan" for the Warriors organization or predicts Kosta to be a bust. Keep up the good work homie.

Thanks for the props
Thanks for the props nicaloco (tight screenname too).

Haha, I mean it's a serious site with some serious analysis (we know our hoops and Warriors), but there's a lot of fun/ jokes mixed in. Why? Cause we're Warriors fans.

As my man DJ Fuzzy Logic put it once- "When it comes to the Warriors laughing keeps us from crying."

LOL
The majority of the content contained in GSoM is not to be taken seriously.

That sounds like a disclaimer. haha.

But, like Atma said, we're all about having fun and keeping it positive here. We'll rag on the players, management, etc but we try to keep it humorous.

Through all the jokes, we do know our basketball and have informed opinions of the Warriors.

I have to agree with Bob
who the hell can possibly say that Yao has "nothing" on Yi?!?! dear lord LOL.

by YaoButtaMing on Aug 25, 2006 12:50 PM PDT   0 recs

Read the sentence again...
He's saying that athletically, Yao has nothing on Yi. After watching Yi, I'd have to agree. He's much smoother, quicker, faster, jumps higher and with more authority. These are characteristics of an athlete, but not necessarily a better basketball player. Yao will end up being a better player than Yi, nobody is denying that, but athletically, Yi has him beat.

by Fantasy Junkie on Aug 25, 2006 1:27 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No, Yao is more athletic than Yi ... DUH!
Read this sentence ... Yao's athleticism makes you look like a pooper scooper.
enough said!

Yao-za
Yao's about as athletic as the sumo guy in your signature. Owwww.

Actually I bet the sumo guy wouldn't be soft in the paint like Yao. Owwww x 2.
