BREAKING NEWS: Mario Elie Out as Warriors Assistant Coach

First Monty was out. Then Nellie was in. Then Reilly was in. Then Silas was in. Now, Elie is out according to Marcus Thompson of the CC Times. Nothing like some late August/ early September coaching drama in Warriors land.

We all want to wish Mario Elie the best. He'll get a head coaching job soon enough. Elie should have replaced Coach Montgomery last season during one of those painful 5+ game losing streaks. It must have killed him to work under the worst coach in the NBA last season and get passed over for the Warriors head coaching spot even though the Kings were considering him to lead their squad. Where's the love?

How many coaches can do this?

Any predictions for where Mario Elie will land in the near future?

OMG
Are you friggin' kiddin' me? Why not keep him? He was a great coach and better than Monty. I don't see why we can't have good assistant coaches. I'm assuming this is some kind of power struggle between him, Don, and management. I was really expecting and anticipating the day that Mario would be our coach.

pppfffft!!!!
i'd rather have Elie than Nellie. The Raiders already tried turning back the clock -- it doesn't work.

by Jeremy Belvins on Sep 14, 2006 11:37 PM PDT reply actions

Oh Come on
The comparison doesn't hold.  Art Shell left the Radiers coaching job and then did .....(crickets chirping)....

Nellie left and turned around a dead Dallas franchise desipte the owner's constant interference.  Manic Mark Cuban was a nusance -- he paid Dampier 10M but not MVP Nash.  Nellie won desipte Mark.

Let's stop making mistakes.  Mistake #1: Over selling a guy is the hallmark of this franchise.  Someone will need to take a chance with Mario but not the GSW.

How did Mario got to be such a good head coach? What's he done?  Did we cruise in the summer league last two years?  No.  I think he played good politics for the job but I'm done with potential and all the off-season back-slapping.

Yeah, I like the guy and think he'd be great for newspaper quotes, enforcing discipline and sideline antics.  But hey, so is Nellie!

Mario is unproven for a position that is distinctly harder than an Assistant position.  Thank god this francise didn't pick another unproven guy for a key position and claim victory.

The best of luck to Mario.  He lost out to an NBA legend.

raiders
damn i thought art shell was going to be good to but they sucked in there opener hopefully they can turn it around if only they had a decent offensive line.

Seriously?!
What?! Where did this come from? What a suprise! And I'm not being sarcastic. No really. ...Yeah right.

For 06-07, I see him possibly getting an assistant coaching job somewhere in Texas. And then getting a head coaching job somewhere else 07-08. Maybe in Houston to replace Van Gundy if the Rockets don't turn things around. And, the Knicks could really use a real head coach this season. Also, although I don't see Mario Elie as a possibility there, I'm guessing this is Pat Riley's last season of coaching.

and..
Although he's still under contract to the Warriors, they will definitely release him to get a job elsewhere. Also, I wonder what all the players' reaction is to this. In my opinion, they were all waiting for him to turn into their head coach. Great pic!

crazies
hi great blog uniting all fans of the bay, and this is my first time posting.  the inmates aren't running the asylum anymore unlike last year.  nellie has put his foot down on the power broken diddy had last year, pretty much saying now there's no fav cool coach mario to be an arbiter.  conform to the system or be shipped outta the bay, now that's discipline even if ellie was a casualty and got played as an example for the team.  this is all a whack point if mullin and the don are actually considered the loonier inmates in cahoots, and cohan ultimately being the crazy Clown puppeteer.  hopefully that wacky don hasn't lost his touch in the draft.  Go dubs!

not that surprising
it's been mentioned previously that Elie and Nellie didn't mesh well in their last dance together as player-coach, and if hella handlez is even partially right it makes sense considering the issues Nelson has had with player loyalty and discipline in Oaktown ... good point by unblinded, he'll end up with the Rockets someway

Norm Chow
I am a BYU fan. A few years ago, Norm Chow was our longtime offensive coordinater and the concensus replacement for LaVell Edwards as head coach. Well, BYU passed him over and hired Gary Crowton. Crowton went on to three losing seasons and ruined a one time national championship football program and Norm Chow went on to be the OC for a little football school called USC, leading the Bush, Leinart, White, offense and then on to the NFL.
I hope this isn't what is happening here, but I can't help but feel like we've made a mistake. My bet is that the Warriors will, like most moves we make, regret this one.

Whatever
I've never understood why fans think Ellie would be a great coach. I hope someone gives him a chance so we can see how he does.

mario ellie
i like mario ellie and everything but why exactly is everyone so confident that he will be such a good head coach and everything. i mean i think he could be a good one but im not basing that off of any knowledge on how he coaches its just a guess and i think he's cool cuz he chest bumped jrich.  but yeah i was just wondering where do people get the idea that he will be a great head coach?  i mean i got the feeling he was a good assistant coach but that doesnt mean much

by travisl212 on Sep 15, 2006 10:34 PM PDT reply actions

The Don of a New Era
I think that's great news. I lost respect for all of the GSW assistant coaches when I saw no real improvement in FT's, defensive fundamentals, and offensive shot selection. I also was surprised when I saw assistant coaches grinning and laughing when we were losing games, and patting players on the back when Monty pulled them out when they weren't contributing.

I'm also wondering where this myth of Mario being a great head coach started. His agent? He has never even been a head coach, and yet many fans are so sure he'd turn around a franchise?

Don Nelson is a proven winner. I think he knows what he's doing. If he's going to create a new and improved attitude around here, he needs to clean house. Any top coach would do the same thing.

Best wishes to Mario in his search for a head coaching position with another team.

It's the Don of a new era for the GSW now.

We knew who Elie was.
A friend of mine once gave this word of wisdom: when you've got to deal with a schmoe, deal with the schmoe you know.  Looking back at the guys fans have wished as 'the next coach we should hire(tm)' there seems to be an over-representation of former Warrior players. Elie we knew, but as others have said, we have no reason to believe that he's going to be a significant NBA coach.  Is there any reason to believe he'd be better than Rod Higgins, a guy whose name came up as 'the next coach we should hire(tm)' several years ago, before he un-distinguished himself in the Washingon front office and came back to similarly do not a whole lot here.

There are a whole lot of potential next coaches out there.  The best to Mario, save when whatever team he lands with comes to Oaktown.

Personally
The guy i thought the Warriors should have brought in to replace Muss, then to replace Monty and now for nellie to hand the reigns over to would be Terry Porter. I think he did a great job in Mil. despite the team getting blown up sending Allen, G- Rob and Sammy out to be replaced by desmond mason, an older than we thought gary payton, and not a whole lot else.

Though we will miss Elie and he may very well blow up and be the next Avery Johnson somewhere. I think Terry Porter will sit the bench in Detroit this season and get a job before Mario just wish he was on the Dub's bench Mentorin and molding Ellis into the next Tony Parker.
