Golden State Warriors: 2nd Stupidest Team Name in Sports

The Sportz Assassin recently dropped a list of stupid team names based on the ridiculous "cities" they're supposed to represent. For once the Warriors actually ranked high on a greatest hits list. Coming at you with the #2 stupidest name:

This one makes no sense. Why not the "Oakland Warriors"?? Why "Golden State"?? I know it's the state nickname...but you are one of FOUR NBA teams in the state. And you suck....even with the Clippers and Kings there. And if any NBA team would claim to be the state's team....it would be the Lakers. Also, I was for the Raiders being named this so they could split games in Oakland and Los Angeles.

To address some of the Sportz Assassin's points:

Yes, the Warriors are one of four NBA teams in Cali, but they have the best fans and the best hoops blog (ahem, GSoM!). That alone counts for enough to represent the entire Wessyde!
Yes, the Warriors do suck. Guilty as charged.
The Fakers as the state's team? No way. That squad is for casual hoops fans who show up near the end of halftime and think Devean George is the next Shawn Marion.(I'm not kidding a few Laker fans actually tried to convince Fantasy Junkie and I that during the Lakers' championship run in the earlier part of this century. Thank god we don't live in SoCal anymore!)
The Raiders splitting games between Oak-town and LA? Sorry, the Black Hole belongs in the Oakland Coliseum.

Being a super-educated Warrior community, we all know from Glenn Dickey's Q&A some of the history about why the Warriors are called Golden State.

There's no question that Golden State is a bizzare city name for the Warriors. It makes as much sense as passing up on Jordan and Pippen 2.0. Still, we like to think of Golden State not as a place, but rather a State of Mind...

The Hornets are the same as the "Fakers". Less than 1% of OKC Hornets fans were actual fans before they moved here, and about 30% could name you a player from the Charlotte Hornets (besides P.J. Brown). The real hoop fans here are fans of other teams around the continent. Most of the people will completely forget about the Hornets once they leave.

But I still think the Lakers is your states team. First of all, any other team there is slim pickins in goodness. Everyone recognizes California as Lakers. Although you don't like it, it is.

And as for the Golden State Warriors name being dumb....its not as dumb as that silly looking indian from like the 50s when they were in Philly. I like the name.

honestly. I think everyone's just think our name's weird cause ours is 'different.' sometimes I think the Lakers should be renamed as the Kobes.

Wanna talk about weird names?

The Los Angeles Lakers, cuz, you know, Los Angeles is the 'land of 1000 lakes.' And Salt Lake City is the birthplace of jazz.

Why were the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim the California Angels back in the day? If any team should be the 'state' team of CA, wouldn't it make sense for it to be the Kings since they play in the state's capital?

Fakers

I love the way that people who don't know basketball claim the Lakeshow as their team. When the W's win, you see fans break out brand new jerseys,talk about being hardcore fans, but couldn't name anyone from the 1995 team.

As for the logos, I hate the Thunder logo, and Thunder as a mascot is stupid. I say go back to the logo with the basketball with the star, and bring back the unis from this site, the one that Sleepy is wearing (minus the short shorts!!)

NBA team names makeover

On the list of bad or inappropriate NBA team names, the Warriors don't even register. Hello Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, and Washington Wizards. SFist offered David Stern some naming suggestions last year, but, uh, we guess he didn't get our memo.

really... you said people hate on our name cuz its different and thats exactly it. oakland warriors and bay area warriors are cool but we are the GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS and people need to stop hatin. if they wanna hate on the fact that we havent been to the playoffs this century thats fine
