Rumor: Warriors Interested in Sign and Trade for Melvin Ely

"Throw it down Melvin! Throw it dooooown!" (AP)

From Rick Bonnell of the Charlotte Observer:

A source familiar with the situation said the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors have some interest in acquiring Ely in a sign-and-trade. The Bobcats are loaded at power forward, with Emeka Okafor and Sean May recovering from injuries. Charlotte can also use Walter Herrmann and Othella Harrington at that position.
Check out Melvin Ely's profile at Yahoo! Sports. Do you think he could contribute to the Warriors? What would you give up in a sign-and-trade?

from espn's john hollinger:
"Ely does offer two important assets -- decent defense and a post game....However, the negatives outweigh the positives....Ely isn't much of a jump shooter nor is he athletic enough to finish well around the basket. He's a terrible foul shooter to boot."

Doesn't seem like the kind of guy Nellie would be interested in.

"Runs the floor well"
From hoopshype.com
"Has above average physical skills, but must improve his attitude... Strong-built body... Solid post defender... Good shot blocker... Runs the floor well."  [emphasis mine].

whoh
Holy conflicting reports Batman! Not very athletic but can run the floor well? Huh? I say pass...and I think TMC is right, doesn't sound like a "Nellie guy"

"Above average physical skills"
I see the disagreement between ESPN and the Hoopshype assessment but hoopshype is consistent.  "Above average physical skills" and "runs the floor well".

Who's out there?

A guy that can play 10-20 reserve minutes behind Murphy and improve on what 3rd-squad-Foyle can do will be the difference in winning some close games.

I think modest improvments matter in team oriented BB.  If he can run, Nellie can use him.

10-20 minutes??
Thats alot no? I thought we were trying to free up minutes for our young bigs? Now if Nellie is talking about playing Murph @ the 5, then AB, Taft, POB, and yes, even Foyle, will need minutes. Not to mention that other then Foyle, I can see all of our young bigs (maybe even Ike) rotating between the 4 & 5. He's young and we all know bigs take a while to develop, and he had career numbers last year as far as PPG and RPG, but he's also has a career .62 FT% and we don't need more lousy FT shooters. http://www.nba.com/playerfile/melvin_ely/index.html
I just don't think he's something we need. A decent player, just not a good fit. But what do I know?

Need help now
10-20 min is a lot but he have the need desipte having guys on the squad.  Ely's FT shooting last year was better than 62 but it is a liability.

A decent player might be a much better player on a running team.  If Ely can run the floor, he'll help Nellie over a better guy who can't run.

First we'd do a sign and trade for Ely so it's possible we'd give up a guy and make room in the trade.

Murphy is the Center, assuming he wants it, but he's going to get banged up and need help.

Nellie says Foyle is 3rd squad - 27 lbs to big but he's not getting traded with his contract.

Ike might play some Center but I have some doubts about his ability to run and play in Nellie's system.  Nellie hasn't said much about him.

Who else?

I'm curious about Taft but he's a 2nd round guy who got hurt and didn't play in Summer league.  I wouldn't count on him.

I'm not sure if AB is ready for Nellie and the kind of game Nellie plays -- he's only 20.  He's not demonstrated himself ready at all.

POB is not going to do squat this year - a broken foot set him too far back.  He's a project.

Zarko - I think he's a gonner.

sign and trade?
who would we trade? the expiring contracts of the utah guys? please say foyle.

Why not take a look at Kemp or Kandi man?

I think K Cato can do as much as Ely for cheaper, bring him in for a look

Why not bring in Stacey Augmon to help with the D at the 3?

K, K, & K
Kandi perhaps, if cheap, Kato no & Kemp no (he cant run in Nelson's system) joe sez is right on in his assessment of GS bigs (Ike could be the trade bait btw) and no one is gonna liberate us of Foyle's contract (curious though, if you are trying to unload someone you don't publicly demote them to third string - just the opposite of what Monty said, Foyle's a starting center, prior to Mully trying to trade him) ... Murphy at Center is a debacle-to-be (he'll be in foul trouble so quick he won't have time to be a 20 & 10 player, or even last year's double-double) and then we're back to Foyle, Beedy, et al inside ... Beedy & Zarko get a fresh start under Nelson and may be a fit in the right spots - if Dunleavy is playing point-power forward (that is a dubious advantage too - takes Davis out of the PG, and opponents can use a small to guard Dunleavy anyway since he's not a threat to slide into the low post). When we break down what Nelson can do with this roster and think about it from the opponents' point of view, I'm just not as hopeful that he can work da magic ...
