Rumor: Warriors Dealing for Melvin Ely

From Preetom Bhattacharya for HoopsWorld.com:

A source close to the Golden State Warriors has indicated that the team is interested in making a sign-and-trade deal for Bobcats PF Melvin Ely...

Because of the Bobcats' surplus of power forwards, including Othella Harrington, Emeka Okafor, Sean May and the aforementioned Hermann, the Warriors may be able to swoop in and get a hold of Ely, who has the abilities that the Warriors currently lack...

But the most important reason Warriors' fans should be hoping this deal gets done? A trade with the Bobcats also will give the Warriors an opportunity to rid themselves of one of their big contracts...

As Bhattacharya notes the Bobcats are still under the league minimum for overall team salary, so this seems fairly plausible. If the Warriors do make a sign and trade for Melvin Ely look for it to happen by tomorrow. As always we'll keep you updated. Training camp starts in just a few weeks, but it's great to see the Warriors still trying to be active even if they're minor, low-risk/high-reward moves. Last summer and last season the Warriors were quieter than a Charlotte Hornets game when it came to upgrading their roster with trades and free agent acquisitions.

What kind of realistic sign and trades can you put together for Melvin Ely? If your prediction actually goes down we'll give you a shout out.

For Melvin Ely?
I can't even begin to imagine what contract we could deal for him. There's no way they're taking Foyle. Murphy would seem kinda redundant. Dunleavy a)doesn't really make any much sense b)would be too good to be true and c)is probably too valued still by the Warriors to be traded for a middling talent like Ely (which also d)illustrates how weird Mullin is at times with talent evaluations). Obviously its not Davis or Richardson.

To be honest I'm kind of worried it'd involve my boy Biedrins (who is supposed to make some 3 mil next season and like 1.5 this year if I recall correctly, and doesn't get enough respect from both the organization and this site at times, I think), maybe one of the throwaway guys we got in the Fisher deal, and maybe, like, Cabarkapa? Maybe Pietrus straight up?

If I had to call anything I'd say Biedrins, one of Owens/McLeod/Brown, and like a second round pick or something for Ely, if it happened.

Michael Jordan can't be suckered
I doubt GSW can dump a bad contract.  MJ is involved with the Bobcats and he did a very good job cleaning house of bad contracts when with the WA DC Wizards.

I guess the Bobcats want cap space for 07 so I GSW must give up expiring contracts for Ely.

I don't see Bobcats wanting any PF or C.  They just have too many playable guys and probably could use a backup PG & SG.

Huh?
Ely makes sense why?  This team has plenty of substandard big men.  What exactly does Ely add and when exactly is he going to play?

Ely doesn't rebound particularly well for a center, isn't an especially good shot blocker, isn't much on offense. Unless he's a defensive stopper of great magnitude, I'm not sure what we get in him that we're not going to get out of Foyle or Biedrins.

Not sure I buy this rumor at all.

Doubt this happens
Nellie values FT% and Ely sucks ... he's 62% lifetime at the charity stripe!

Here's a link to his stats:

If Nellie is gonna hate bad free throw percentage
Ely has about 30% on Biedrins....
Think about how many more points Biedrins could score if he was up to 60%. He really is an expert on fouls, both giving and drawing, well maybe just giving.
Well theres always next year x12
