Trade Idea: Jrich for Gerald Wallace + Marvin Ely

Looking at our long term financials, and our current plethora of wing players, at some point it's highly likely that Mullin will have to decide between keeping Pietrus and trading JRich or losing Pietrus to free agency.  I really like JRich, but to me, I'd rather keep the younger, nearly equally talented player who we can undoubtedly get for less than 50 million over the next 4 years.  Charlotte is currently starting Matt Carroll (Who the crap is that guy?) at the two guard, and have the 'Stache as their player of the future at the 3 (Wallace's true position).  They still need a proven scorer at the 2 position and JRich can give them that.  Besides, he's spectacular, can hit the three and is an upstanding citizen.

In Wallace and Ely, we get two rugged defenders (plus some needed girth that isn't Foyle), and a huge amount of salary cap relief in the future.

I'd do that trade in a heartbeat, and I think it is a good trade for Charlotte.

Would you do it?  Would they?

Why
would you want to trade Jrich when he's been the only consistent player on this team for the past couple of years?

Pietrus is talented, no doubt about that, but he's not in Jrich's class quite yet.

not a good idea
to trade j rich(the heart and soul of the team) doesnt sound good at all to me. pietrus is younger but wont develop into a really good player. compare j-rich' stats to pietrus' when rich was the same age. besides, melvin ely wont do crap except warm up the bench and gerald wallace cant shoot freethrows, like j-rich, but he cant shoot the three or get as many points. he is better on defense though. it would be cool though to trade  pietrus or a package of sarunas jasikevicius and stephen jackson for the 'stach and brevin knight.

by duggie25 on Jan 19, 2007 5:58 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

their stats are closer than you think
Pietrus' percentages from the field/3/line are equal to/better than JRich's.  Do you think that JRich's production is worth 12, 13 or 14 million?  Only if his shooting percentages continue to increase from his numbers last year...

As much as I'd like to keep JRich and lose Jackson, it's not going to happen.  We're stuck with him for a bit, and that's the price we paid for getting rid of Dunleavey and Murphy's contract.  'Stache?  Please.  This team has enough trouble playing D.  He's far less athletic than Dunleavey and is shooting under 40% from the field.

I admit, this trade would be more about blowing the team up than anything, and believing that we could build something better than what we have with our younger pieces.  Additionally, it's a fairly unlikely trade given that JRich will be hurt pretty much up until the deadline.

um..
nearly equally talented player

NOPE. I don't even know how to respond to that. MP2 is not nearly equal in talent to JR.

Try again...

that's horrible
terrible trade. that would be a steal for charlotte

by AJC3317 on Jan 19, 2007 8:24 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Well
I actually would have taken that at the beginning of the season, but the Wall has played very erratic and has faced many injuries, not to mention Ely would probobly be seldom used by Nellie.

A Poem:

If Monty were still coachin'
And if GWall was still rollin'
Then I'd make that trade.

Gerald Wallace
Is probably the best player in that trade. JRich is a close #1b. In the world of NBA trading, the team that gets the best player can usually be the "winner."

I'll go against the grain and say I would make the deal. Somehow I doubt Charlotte would go for it, but --

Baron
Monta
Wallace
Harrington
Biedrins

-- is a pretty nasty lineup.

Silly Goose.
Take out Wallace and replace him with J Rich. Then it's a nasty lineup.

Here's a question for all you J Rich trading jerks, when, all of the sudden, did J Rich stop being a pretty big star in the league? When did that happen? Injuries are not a reason to trade someone. Stop it.

If you take a look out of your windows, you can now see Dallas, TX. Quite the site, no?

OP
you honestly believe MP2 is close to J Rich's skill level?

by gsw4life on Jan 19, 2007 9:49 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

They're different players
Wallace is a legit 6'8" small forward that can hang with the likes of McGrady, Nowitzki, and the Matrix. Tonight he put up this Marion-esque line: 18 points, 15 boards, 3 dimes, 3 steals, 1 block ... in a tidy 31 minutes.

I never said JRich wasn't a great player -- he's my favorite Warrior, and I hate the idea of "selling him low" while he's banged up -- but off-guards with his skills are simply a much less rare commodity.

Let's end this lame JRich-lovers v. JRich-haters meme, shall we? There are no JRich "haters" on this board. There are, however, people who look at the roster, see five legit NBA two-guards -- Monta, JRich, Pietrus, Barnes, and Stephen Jackson -- and think that if we can get a true 3-4 forward for for JRich, we would do well to consider it.

It would make more sense to keep Jason and trade some of the other 4 for a good one!  Jason's the only one of those 5 that has consistantly played at a high level for a long period of time.

cuddy, is you serious?!?!
while i like gerald wallace and ely aint bad... trading j rich for him?!?!

by travisl212 on Jan 19, 2007 10:45 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

yep...
I'd rather trade any of the others...Piety, Sjax, Monta, or Barnes before I would conside dealing JR.
Piety...his best move is still the step out of bounds when your about to drive. Not even close to JR in talent
Monta...don't get me wrong, he is a nice PROSPECT but maybe a bit overrated IMO. His outside shot is streaky at best and he turns it over WAY too much. Not even close to JR in talent

Seems to me if you trade JR we definately downgrade at the 2...just to upgrade the 3? Nah...i'd rather try to land a backup 4 with lesser pieces.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Monta v. JRich
Kawakami thinks Ellis is already better in a lot of ways than JRich. I'm not sure I agree, but he certainly comparable in terms of talent, and has more potential to improve.

Of course I'd rather give up the other four than JRich, but you gotta give to get. The Matt Barneses and SJaxes of the world won't buy you a Gerald Wallace.

people are so sensitive in regards to J-Rich
A great GM makes deals that he will come out better, and doesn't leave any player untouchable if it will make the team better (unless you're talking about  MJ or Pujols or something). So people need to calm down in regards to J-Rich. Just because the idea is brought up that there might be a trade that would be suitable to deal him in, doesn't mean that person  hates J Rich or anything like that. It's ridiculous. Last year Wallace averaged 15 points, 7.5 boards, 2.5 steals, 2 blocks, and 2 assists per game. Like a poor mans Marion. And he plays lockdown defense. SO relax people. I would think long and hard about this trade.

A great GM also doesn't trade away the fans' favorite and most respected player.
Last year  Jason's numbers were  19.2 points, 5.8 boards, 1.3 steals, .5 blocks  , and 3.1 assists , No advantage to Wallace there. People are sensitive in regards to Jason because he's been a good friend to warriors fans and we appreciate it.

cross sport reference
when the Giants traded Matt Williams for Jeff Kent there was a whole lotta complaints, but it was the right trade ... I'd trade JRich for the right player, say Gasol but it better work out!

by hardcore on Jan 21, 2007 5:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

correct me if I'm wrong but
didn't JRich average 23 pts/game last year?

Anyway, about this trade, I completely say NO. Any trade proposal that involves JRich for non-superstar talent like KG, LeBron or Tim Duncan will always be a big fat NO!

by MANUTEs BOLs on Jan 22, 2007 10:15 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

yes
J-Rich has meant a lot to this franchise in the last few years. I love him as much as the other guy. But bashing an idea on the principle that he is involved is stupid. If you can prove to me that it's completely not worth it than by all means. But i have qualms with the senseless bashing.

by ohad on Jan 23, 2007 6:06 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Dunno
To me, trading Jrich would be trading away our heart and soul. Yes, BD is the best player on this team and the Warriors do have a surplus of 2/3s on the roster. But why would you want to trade the guy who committed himself to this franchise even when it was rebuilding?

And I wouldn't trade Monta before I trade J-rich. I love Jrich but Monta is probably more of an untouchable at this point than Jrich is. The kid is only 20 or 21 and has a lot of time to improve.
