Time to start thinking about next year?

If so what does this team need to do?

I would let Pietrus go and sign Barens as my all around role player (if he starts your team is horrible)

This team badly needs a power forward; both a starter and a back-up who can run

This team needs a consistent off the bench shooter.  A vet

This team needs a better back-up point guard (Cabbage hasn't impressed).  A vet

This team needs a healthy J-Rich

Any other thoughts?

To me the only worth while players on this team are Baron, J-Rich, Barens (maybe) The two young guys (Monta and BD) and thats about it.  Harrinton seems like he could be a starting 3 and third scoring option maybe.

Otherwise I don't think Jax, Pietrus, Cabbage really give us much

Or is it time to strip this thing down and start over?

I think it is clear that the talent is lacking

I don't know...
at this point I'm at a loss for words... the game wasn't televised but from what I saw, the two things that stood out were 0-14 from 3pt and gettin outrebounded

Greg Oden
Let's just tank. Get Oden. Think of the wonderful happiness if we had only done this with LeBron.

Seriously, though, it's still a little early to say "how about next year" especially when there's really not much to be done for next year.

Also seriously, though (though not really), how tantalizing does a lineup of

PG-Baron
SG-Healthy JRich
SF-Harrington (for a full season)
PF-Biedrins
C-Oden
6th Man- Ellis

sound? There's your playoffs, baby.

Not happening of course, though.

pretty much...
not even durant could help this team - he's too thin.

when nellie ends his run, they should try & get a defensive minded coach. all of nellie's disciples, popovich, avery & karl, saw the flaws in nellie's approach and have become defensive-minded coaches. all 3 have taken teams to the nba finals.

but we just want to get to the
playoffs which Nellie can do (with the expection of the Knicks)

It seems when teams buy into the system they get to at least that level

I think he still doesn't have the guys he wants

good point, but
nellie can do that as the GM. but he's only the coach here.

I totally agree
it IS defense that wins. Why are the lakers starting to do well this year, better than last year? They slowed down the game for the triangle offense and upped the effort on the defensive end.

and I really agree with what Jason said, all of Nellie's discliples have seen the flaws in the running game and have accounted for them and thus, taking their teams to the Finals. Would anyone believe you if you said that the Mavs, 4-5 years ago, were going to make the Finals by playing stellar defense? Untill the Warriors become a good man-to-man defensive team/halfcourt posession team, they arent going anywhere. They dont have the players necessary to play the running game, the Suns are like an anomally everything just fits together perfectly for them.

Anyhow, what i'm trying to say is, the warriors shouldnt be running because they dont have the necessary personnel. No one is an above-average longrange shooter, everyone is a man-to-man player. I wouldnt mind seeing an ISO offense aslong as on the other end they play intense man-to-man defense with good help defense strategy.

However, there is no way we are becomming a defensive team in the hands of Nellie so..... lets hope the Warriors catch fire because we live and die by the 3pt.

Ah yes, the Sleepy Freud remedy:

IIRC, I got called out big time for proposing that at the beginning of the year. The problem -- if you can call it a problem -- is (a) we've already won to many games to be in the Oden hunt; and (b) you can't expect good-to-great NBA players like Baron and Harrington just to tank games. I'm guessing this team will come back with a vengeance and get us all excited again, only to blow a couple heartbreakers and end up 4 or 5 games out of the playoffs ... again.

If we really want a shot at Oden or Durant, we can't do it half- assedly: we need to trade everybody we can except Monta and Biedrins, lose a ton of games starting now, and hoard a few other teams' first round picks in the process. Personally, given what a hot draft this is shaping up to be, I sort of like the idea of starting over with Monta, Biedrins and like five first-rounders. Al Harrington to Boston, Baron Davis to Philly, and JRich to Memphis, anyone?

/ ducks flying rocks and bottles /

Yeah, I'm kidding, mostly -- but this is getting old...

Greg Oden...
Might not even go for the draft. I think he's staying for another year.  This road trip is starting to look dark. Losing to the Hawks and Lebron-less Cavs? Comeon, we're better than that(at least at home)!

My order of preference
  1. Pull the trigger on that big Darko trade rumored a couple of diaries down;
  2. Work something out for Gasol;
  3. Tell Baron and JRich to rest their knees for the rest of the year and lose enough games to get in position for the Oden/Durant sweepstakes;
  4. Stand pat, miss out on the playoffs again, draft another O'Bryant or Diogu at #11 or 12.

FIRE NELLIE!
I dont think Nellie is the man for this job! His small ball approach is killing us not to mention his never ending lineup variations. He's just a good coach, nothing better. Has he won a title yet? You can't say he doesn't have the roster because the talent we have at the moment should not be getting blown out by 20+ in back to back games. Shake it up and drop him for Mario Elie! If you really think Nellie is going to take us to the promise land you better think twice. What did he do in Dallas? Nash and Nowitzki were the reasons for Dallas' success, not Nellie. Look at what Nash is doing for Phoenix's head coach. He's making him look like a genius. I was on the Nellie bandwagon at first but I think this is my stop, so im off.

Nellie bandwagan.
Im falling off the wagon as well and am really starting to hate small ball. We have no intimidator. The best one we have is Stephen Jackson and he may be gone next month. Biedrins needs to gain like 30 pounds and Harrington need to lose 10. Hopefully when JR gets back his knee is 100% becuase his scoring is going to have to come from dunks and drives becuse his shot is going to take awhile to come back.

ttttttaaaa.....
shooo...

haha, i only wish we could get someone of oden's talents. But even if the warriors tank, they prolly won't suck enough to get an impact big ala oden, durant, wright, Noah, or even a small forward like Julian wright.

calmmmmmmmmmm down everyone
We got blown out in back to back games by mediocre teams. We've also went 3-35 on 3ptrs in these 2 games. You guys honestly think we're that bad? Just the fact that people are even suggesting tanking is comical to me. There's a good article on espn.com on tanking by John Hollinger. You know even if we somehow got the worst record (which we won't) we're still only 25% to get the #1 pick? And that a high draft pick isn't exactly guaranteed to save our team? (hi, Darko) And that we're only 2.5 games behind the Clips for the 8th seed? C'mon guys, I thought Warriors fans were supposed to be optimistic!

by gsw4life on Jan 31, 2007 10:32 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

We're not **that** bad
Which may be precisely the problem. We're only sort-of bad ... or sort-of good, if you're a "glass half full" kinda guy.

I agree with you that our Oden ship has probably sailed. The time to make the decision to tank would have been earlier in the season, as Philly did by dumping Iverson.

So would you rather be in Philly or Boston's shoes or ours? To me, it's a tough call. If those teams continue on their current paths, sure, they'll only have a 20-25% shot at Oden -- but another 20-25% shot at Kevin Durant (who may end up the best draft prospect since LeBron) and, in the consensus best draft in years, a 100% shot at a Top-5 player.

Now we, on the other hand, have all but given up on Lotto and hitched our wagon to the outside possibility of passing both Minnesota and the Clips and eking out the eight playoff seed. The Clips are 2.5 games ahead of us; and Minnesota is 1.5 up, playing better ball  (viz. recent win over the Suns), and have three more home games remaining than we do.

I don't think we're out of the hunt by any stretch, but losing these two totally winnable games has totally hurt our chances. As long as we're talking percentages, this is about how I'd rate ours right now:

19% -- make playoffs, get knocked out in first round
1% -- make playoffs, advance to second round
77% -- miss playoffs, miss lottery, pick in the #9-14 range
3% -- make lottery

Most likely scenario by far: no playoffs, no lottery -- basically  total no man's land, once again. Is that really a so much better place than a 40-50% shot at Oden or Durant? I'm not so sure.

I do agree with you that we shouldn't overreact to the two losses, GSW, but really, what is there to be so optimistic about?

by Sleepy Freud on Feb 1, 2007 2:02 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

umm wat about that Yi guy?
thats all of you guys been talking about this season "the yi movement". you guys are giving up, and hoping to get oden, who i personally dont want to take a chance on. if we just play the way were playing, well end up up probably with the 10th draft pick, and ive been reading about yi being dropped to the last top10-15

by bayareawarriors on Jan 31, 2007 10:38 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Oden's way better than Yi
If you don't want to take a chance on an Oden, you certainly shouldn't be wanting to take a chance on a Yi.

That said, obviously nobody on this team is going to try and tank the rest of the season, but like Sleepy Freud said, we're sorta in No Man's Land here. We're in that dreaded NBA purgatory where you aren't making the playoffs, but you aren't picking high enough to get any sort of impact talent to push you towards the playoffs either. We've been here for a few years now, and it's probably starting to wear on a lot of people.

by jonathan on Feb 1, 2007 7:40 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

semi-joke
despite Yao's success, and the Yankee foray into the PRC, the "Yi Movement" is the product of a dreadful summer for GS and some Bay Area hopefuls projecting talent on this guy. Even to mention him with Durant or Ogden is an insult to them, there's probably 20-30 US college players better than Yi imho ...

by hardcore on Feb 1, 2007 8:31 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

wow
i totally agree with sleepy freud. Thats sums up everything i'm feeling right now.

We'll need to turn it on to get to the playoffs, however i see that window closing every game. We need to start winning close games and games on the road or we'll never make it over the hump. We're still a couple pieces away.

Worst case and most likely scenario: Warriors miss playoffs by 2-6 games, miss the lottery (and all the impact players) and pick between 13-16. Pretty bad situation in my opinion.

Nellie and Mully will need to search the trade market.

Warriors, Stupidest franchise in the league. Purgatory is thy home.

I think....
We need to play out the season like it is. A lineup of:
PG - Baron Davis
SG - Jason Richardson
SF - Stephen Jackson
PF - Al Harrington
C  - Andris Biedrins
with a bench of Monta Ellis, Matt Barnes and Mickael Pietrus looks pretty good on paper.

They need to play together. No players can come together, instantly gel, and be at their best as a team.  Just look at team USA...a starting lineup of Kirk Hinrich, Dwyane Wade, Lebron James, Carmello Anthony and Dwight Howard is clearly better than any other country, but for some reason or another they weren't the best team.

We're never gonna break our streak of missing the playoffs if we keep changing things. We need to have the patience to let things play out and see what happens.  Now that's not to say we shouldn't make a trade if a nice one pops up, I just don't think we should discuss rebuilding the team, when we've basically just done that.

Also, I think we underestimate the impact that a new and improved, motivated, healthy J-Rich will have on this basketball team....

Just my 2 cents...

by bradyk2 on Feb 1, 2007 9:56 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

that has more to do
with different rules, trapezoid lanes, shorter 3's and no superstar treatment from referees than anything. like al & steve said, it's not hard to adjust to nellie ball.

jrich still doesnt add length or the ability to keep his man in front of him to this team. all his return will bring is even more ineffectiveness from pietrus, azubuike, sarunas & barnes(which is what the pacer trade has basically done). as well as make sjax even more ineffective.

on the plus side, even though it'll reduce his minutes, it'll probably help monta (b/c he'll be playing against 2nd stringers & b/c monta seems more effective w/o baron - he's pretty much a spot up shooter w/ baron in the game, & a bad one at that). jrich will help their halfcourt offense if they set weakside screams for him and if his leg & hand return to form. but not if they just iso him in the post.

Andris some respect
Come on lets give Andris some credit awesome player. Josh Powell great young player same with Patrick. J-Rich really needs to be healthy. Monta they need to sign him to a long deal. They have great young big men that they need to pick.

This is only looking at the standings. If you watched this team play, you can clearly see that the warriors are still too inconsistent to smell playoffs yet alone be in them. Look beyond the stats and the truth of the warriors will hit you in the face.

On paper this team does look good. However they continue to disappoint. Look at the stats people rarely look at like opponents fg% or shots per posession. Stats like that show how good a TEAM is not the individual.

This team has also
played more games at home than on the road so the record going into this trip was misleading.  They are a little worse than their record indicated

Hmm...
I think the trade during the season has essentially doomed all playoff chances...

I would have executed the trade outside of the season...especially before THIS season if we could have, because everybody would know exactly what the hell they were doing.

I just hope we actually move in one direction.
The worst thing that we can do at this point is to stay steady in our position. We should either sandbag, or we should kick some ass.

by bradyk2 on Feb 1, 2007 9:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

we're only good when
the other team doesnt have a good big man or a bunch of decent big men. two decent big men on the opposing team & we are screwed.

ppl point to our victories against the spurs, mavs, jazz, & orlando, but even the bobcats have beaten the spurs, detroit, lakers, cleveland & orlando. it could just be the opposition underestimating us.

according to jerry west, the w's are a team w/ avg talent that plays hard - supposedly the grizzlies don't play hard.

Even "consistent bad" teams win sometimes.

I mean look at Atlanta -- they totally suck, and just the other night they kicked a pretty decent team's asses. At least I think it was a pretty decent team...
