When is the Wright time?

So I was watching the round table before the game with a couple of buds.  I don't know if I missed anything that Fitzy or Barnett mentioned, but I was really looking forward to watching our subs play.  Yeah, I figured BD, SJax, Harrington and Andris were going to play, but watching our reserves is why I was really interested.  Buike, you are the man BTW.  I knew you were going to start, but damn son, now I know why.  You were like that nerdy braced faced girl who came back from summer vacation to unfold into a total hottie a la Petra Nemcova!  Buike looked oh so nasty!

So this leads me to this question.  WHERE THE HELL WAS BRANDON WRIGHT?!  All the hype with a big fat Zero No-Show.  Does anyone know why he didn't play at all?  He and Belinelli were the two guys I really wanted to see.  I don't know if he is still hurt or if he pissed The Don off, but its a little strange as to why he got no playing time.  There has to be some reason why.  Any thoughts?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Good frigging question
Apparently in the last Hawaii scrimmage Nellie said Wright was looking great and had improved with every practice. What's the point of exhibition games like this if not to get a good luck at up-and-comers like Wright and Lasme? Hell, Tierre Brown and Pat Burke got significant minutes.

Total head-scratcher, unless Wright and Lasme are both injured, which AFAIK they're not. Maybe for whatever reason Nellie tabbed tonight as the POB/Croshere/Burke game and the next LAL matchup as the Perovic/Lasme/Wright game? I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I'm dying to see Wright in some game action. Even if he falls flat on his face, he'll have had a better debut than the Great Yi (15 minutes, 3 pts (1-3 fg), 0 boards, 0 ast, 6 PF)...

what is AFAIK?
That is an abbreviation I have never seen and it piqued my curiosity.

I think it is Nellie mind
tricks

He is trying to get Lamse and Wright to get hungry and he is so hard on rookies

For whatever reason he is letting Belli have a pass.

Nellie seems to make up his mind about guys and it takes a lot to change that

Nellie
did say he didn't really think of Belinelli as a rookie.

Wright, Lasme
Seems like Nellie was not playing those guys because they had to sit out summer league?  My guess is that he wanted a look at Burke, Tierre, Croshere, POB and THUD to see who would rise to the top.  I have a feeling we could cut Burke and Tierre in the next couple of days, he wanted to see what he could get out of them early in preseason so that we wouldn't have to deal with them closer to the season.

POB was a changed man.  That guy cannot get up and down the court like Nellie needs, but did we actually see him dribbling?  Blocking shots?  Rebounding over Bynum and sometimes over three Lakers?  WOW.  Kosta should be worried.

I hope we get to see Kosta coast next game.  Maybe that will be the rook game?

Will Carlos Powell see any minutes?

Barnes, that guy really messed up that opportunity to lead a second tier team.  He didn't prove himself as a creator and he had a few shots that were downright ugly.  Dribble into the middle of the key for an off-balanced brick?

And why does Hudson think he can make pull up threes in the face of bigger defenders?

answer and idea...
The answer is: "WRIGHT NOW!"

thanks for the idea... come monday when the Warriors play at home next week, I'm gonna make a sign (if he hasn't played by than) that says... in lil' letters "We wanna see Bandon"... and in a big @$$ font blow... "WRIGHT NOW!" (Big ears included!)

Hella corny but the best idea this morning lol!

damn typo's...
Bandon= Brandon

my bad!

Brandan
I think Wright is waiting for people to figure out that his name is neither Bandon nor Brandon.  It's Brandan.  He made a deal with Nellie to stick it to the fans and stay on the bench until people lean his name.

LOL!
Yeah Wright! (lol)

I think Nellie is moving up the cut list from the
bottom.  Last night was to see what the second team could do and decide on Burke and Brown.  Now that both are gone (or as good as), Nellie can start with the guys who aren't in as much danger of being cut, but haven't earned the minutes yet.

i like this
i like this line of thinking. Makes logical sense.  I'm not too worried about.  If he doesn't play all pre-season, something definitely is amiss.

Thank you!
After 10 responses, finally a theory for the Wright DNP that makes some sense. And yeah, I group my own post with the "nonsense" ones... :-P

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 10, 2007 2:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely
You are right.  The three rookies who didn't play, Perovic, Wright and lasme, all have guarenteed contracts.  They are NOT going to be cut.  At least not in training camp.  Burke, Brown and the other non-guarenteed invitees have more to prove to the coaching staff, thus are getting more of a look in the early games.

BTW, Nelson had an interesting quote in a recent training camp article.  He mentioned that he doesn't pay attention to rookie's performances in pre-season games as much as he does to their performance in practices.

Of note, POB kicked butt, 12 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 2 assists, 1 steal and 0 turnovers in 19 minutes.  That's what I'm talking about.  Belinelli continued his euroleague and summer league pattern of no rebounds or assists.  But he put up a shot every other minute.

Isn't it Brandan not Brandon?
But yah, the rooks are almost guaranteed to make the team. So, Nellie wanted to see if any of those guys from yesterday deserved a spot more than the rooks.

by lightz0ut on Oct 10, 2007 11:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Brandan.
If you had a friend named Don, would you call him Dan? Can we start calling our head coach Dan Nelson? OK, in the case of "Brandan/Brandon" the second syllable is unstressed so it's pronounced the same. Still.

In the Red Sox chatroom, it got to the point where so many posters were misspelling "Clay Buchholz" that the mods rigged the site's code to make all possible misspellings of his name appear as "I am an idiot." Not quite GSoM's style, but c'mon, if people can write Mickael, Andris, and Kelenna, they can at least make the effort with Brandan -- even if Nellie never lets the guy off the bench. :-(

I'm just happy
that Baran Davis is looking real good

by Anomaly on Oct 10, 2007 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

My theory
Nellie doesn't give rookies any love - it's just his way.  If you look back at the rookies on the teams he's coached, he never gives them much playing time, unless he has no other options.  I don't think we'll see much of Wright, Lasme, and Kosta, at least not at the start of the season.  We'll probably see them in garbage time or if one of the top 12 gets hurt (knock on wood).  The only reason he treats Bellinelli differently, is because he doesn't see him as rookie, due to his 5 years of pro experience in Italy.

by EternalWarriorsOptimist on Oct 11, 2007 12:42 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He's denied that repeatedly
For some reason the "Nellie hates rooks" line gets parroted every season, and every season he (and others) bring up Webber, Owens, Hardaway, Marciulonis, Richmond, Sprewell, Josh Howard et al. as glaring counter-examples. Heck, even the 20 y.o German question mark Nowitzki played 20 minutes a game his rookie season. Nellie likes guys who can play, period.

In this case, we're not even talking about rookies making the rotation; we're talking about rookies getting off the bench in a meaningless preseason game ahead of the likes of Pat Burke and Tierre Brown. I just don't buy the "Nellie's playing mind games with the rooks" theory at all. Captain Jack's hypothesis that he's "moving up the cut list from the bottom" makes tons more sense. I'm sure we'll see plenty of Lasme and Wright before the preseason's done.

by Sleepy Freud on Oct 11, 2007 1:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nellie plays good rookies.
You can add the "Nellie Doesn't Play Rookies Is A Myth" to the list of oft-repeated JAEisms (with rebounds are key and the others you've spotted), though you put it as well or better than I ever have, Sleepy.

by jae on Oct 11, 2007 9:37 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right
I agree that Nellie runs a meritocracy wherein the best players will get the most minutes.  So given that he was trying to "move up the cut list from the bottom", do you think he saw what he needed to see from the guys at the bottom?  I think that Burke might have lost his job jacking that 3 with so much time left on the clock.  I know it's just a preseason game, but that was poor decision making.  On the other hand, he's a big man with a nice shooting touch, which is Nellie's kinda player.  Hopefully Nellie will free the rookies for tonight's game...

by EternalWarriorsOptimist on Oct 11, 2007 10:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

guaranteed deals
The Warriors have 15 contracts presently.  That's their limit.  Barring trades or an unforeseen cut of a guy with a contract, the non-roster players aren't going to make the team.  I believe Hudson and Croshere signed one year guaranteed deals at the min that are likely guaranteed for the season.  Ellis also has a min cost contract for a year as does Azubuike (his has a second year player option so it's essentially a two year guarantee) but neither of them are going to get cut.  Everyone else has a bigger tag attached and are unlikely to get cut unless one of the nonrosters shows he's SIGNIFICANTLY better than one of low dollar guaranteed contracts.

Perhaps Nellie is evaluating just in case a move is in the works, perhaps there are potential moves in the works, but my guess is that Brown, Powell and Burke are practice fodder to make sure there's enough fresh bodies on the floor.  They never had jobs to lose and my guess is that they must know that they really don't have much of an opportunity to win a job either.  They need the guys to run some of the drills perhaps and there's guys willing to go to an NBA camp accordingly.

Why did he play them?  Hard to tell.  Motivation to the kids?  There are other coaches who scout to grab cast offs who might be a better fit elsewhere. Perhaps there's some sort of promise to the guys who don't have a snowball's chance to make the roster that if they practiced hard, helped out to make camp run smoothly that they'd see enough floor time in a preseason game or two to potentially impress another GM either in the NBA or some other pro league.  If that's the case, game one would be the time to do it as any time closer to the launch of the season would be more disruptive to establishing a regular rotation for the regular 82.

by jae on Oct 11, 2007 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

In my defense
I'm not the only one propagating the "Nellie is hard on rookies" rumor.  Tom Tolbert, in an interview with Project O'Bryant on KNBR, said that he remembers Nellie being particularly tough on rookies:

http://media.knbr.com/knbr/1010obryant.mp3

So I guess we'll just have to wait and see how he treats Brandon Wright as the season gets going...
