Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The Dubs hit the floor runnin', read my thoughts and share yours

Maybe I'm sippin' the kool aid, but I saw a lot of promise out of (almost) everyone on the floor.  I completely agree with Atma Brother One's recap on a couple of accounts, Pat Burke can take a long walk off a short pier in Hawaii, sorry Pat..I'm sure you're fun in the locker room or whatever, but uhhh, hoisting a 3 with 10 seconds left and forcing T-Hud to pull a game winner out of his bag of tricks is just not cool.  And Tierre(?) Brown cannot guard a wet paper bag, or Sasha Vujacic...which is essentially the same thing.  Cut both these guys, QUICK.

On to the good, I'm not going to bother talking about our starters b/c they looked polished and nice (sans Jax's patented and dangerous high dribble and Harrington STILL having problems finishing):

-I loved what I saw from Belinelli, he made some nice steals both in the open court and in half court sets, he clearly had no problems picking up the dig and rip method preached by Nellie, obviously the kid can shoot, I was a little surprised to see him throw up off-balance fading jumpers even when he was wide open, he seemed to do that from mid range only and made sure he straightened out and jumped up high from deep.  His court vision is sick, he made several great dishes, including a beautiful interior touch pass to Burke for an easy lay-in.  I expect, sporadic but, big production out of him.

-Croshere looked like a nice fit on the team. I don't see him as a rotation guy but on a night when things aren't going right for our bigs (Harrington, Biedrins, Barnes or Biedrins' backup TBD) I think Nellie can put him on the floor and expect defense, rebounding, a reliable deep ball and solid FT%.  I look forward to having him on board, I could be eating my words in 2 months...but I liked what I saw last night.

-O'Bryant has a pulse! I was shocked, really...completely SHOCKED, by this kid.  Yes, one game, yes preseason.  But he wasn't going up against any NBDL scrubs, Bynum and Mihm are legit NBA centers, they're not stars...no, but they are talented nonetheless.  It was very refreshing to see POB do SOMETHING on the court.  Let me put it this way, if he had gone out there and looked lost and shell-shocked as usual, I'd say he's done...cooked, only a matter of time until they cut him.  But he made his presence known, he looked like he wanted to get after it, maybe he's finally hung up the apron and put down the spatula and decided to play some b-ball...we'll see.

-Hudson is BALLLLLIN'.  Dude can't rap but apparently he can still play some basketball, he was a little out of control at times, but he also always seemed to pick his spots and be effective in his shot selection.  The few times he drove to the basket he either converted a layup or kicked it out for an open look.  He is money from the FT line and can still shoot it from deep, I'm not sure how many minutes he'll see but I won't be complaining when he's got the rock in his hands.

Couple negatives:

Barnes played like crap, that was one of his worst performances and it worries me to see him go back to 'do too much' mode.  When he first got on with the team he would have games where you could tell he was reaching beyond his abilities, and it normally resulted in unforced TO's and rushed jumpshots (which we saw a LOT of last night), I'm hoping Nellie can reel him in and keep him within his skill set, he's a captain now, he's got to set the example and be a rock on this team, not a concern.

Pietrus...ugh, Pietrus.  Please ship this guy out ASAP.  I'm just sick of him, more of the same, lost on D, fouls...bricked shots, wild drives, get on the phones Mullin, I'm through with Air France.

Well that's my take, what'd you guys think?  Agree, disagree, wanna fight about it?  Discuss!

Outta nowhere!
Notorious P.O.B. with 12 rebounds?!? I been waitin' for somethin' like that from the kid! I woulda' been happy with 12 points! Lets see how the regular season treats him... When I think of POB... I think of that popcorn rookie incident J-Rich dropped on him... now I can flip it and think of this! Promising cat to look forward too- I hope he clothes line somebody this season!

I agree mostly
Except I do actually see croshere getting signifcant minutes simply because he can rebound. The quickness on the drive and the outside shot are always nice too.

I think you should of talked about Baron more. He looked amazing, the outside shooting, the defense, the reverse lay-in with the left hand. You can put money on his chances of winning the MVP award, especially after statements like, "this is the best Ive felt since college" and performances like last night's. If he played as much as Kobe did, we wouldve won by 40.

I was extremely disappointed that I didnt get a look at Lasme. Ive heard so many great things, I was dying for a chance to see him play. He sounds so much like Gerald Wallace, one of my favorite players in the league. And where was Brandan B right?

Hudson didnt impress me as much as he did for everyone else. He looked a little jittery for a vet and he missed some open lay-ups. I never liked his game much, but if he can find some consistency and hit some clutch shots, like that impressive one in the winding seconds, I'll feel better about him. Id still rather us give the back PG minutes to Ellis or Belinelli though.

On Pietrus, Im really surprised Nelson hasnt had a good long sit-down with him, telling him to just get back to his days in France where they used him as a shutdown defender. If he would only just DEFEND!!!, rebound, and NOT turn the ball over and act like a damn bafoon...

Why wouldnt he just embrace a potential title of being the best on the ball defender in the NBA. Everyone knows he can do it, his rookie season he zoned in on guys and took so much pride in keeping them in front of him...what happened? Im just SICK of hearing him say things like, "I'm big part of Warrior future!" and "I will play big role in team success this year!"...get a muf**kin clue dude...

I agree on Barnes, he should just do what he did. WHY FIX IT? If it isnt broken... Be vocal, bring the ball up more since youve worked on your handle, drive a bit more, and keep the three falling. Thats all we ask from Barnesy...it would be very sad to him lose fans. Im not really worried about him though, seems like a sharp lad.

Azubuike, Barnett touched on something that I've felt strongly about Buki since his tenure, maybe the most impressive aspect of his game to me. He stays completely within his element, while still maintaining an aggressive mentality and showing that killer instinct. Knowing when to attack, when to back off, and knowing what you can and cannot do, are crucial aspects to a young player's success. Along with his natural talents and improving skills, he seems to already be extremely strong in that department.

Belinelli should share minutes at PG. He's just good.

I once told my friends after watching O'Bryant work out at the open practice last year, that he reminded me of Tim Duncan. The way he moved, his smooth footwork and effortless midrange shot, his length... I really started feeling like an idiot soon after. But from what I saw last night, I might go back to that TD reference in say a year. He might not be no Duncan, but he's made vast strides. Paul Silas once said that a skilled big man with no heart is a useless thing. Skilled bigmen that went through some kind of struggle or rough upbringing tend to shine in the NBA, because they abuse people and become sadistic in their dominance.

Glad to see Patrick dish out some thumpings. He's finally learned that it is MUCH better to give, than to receive...

This is my team There are many like it But this one is mine. My team, without me is useless. Without my team, I am useless

air DUNCE
Despite the 4th quarter ALMOST collapsing, I gotta say, the thing that IRKED me most was pietrus. He does the same clown antics EVERY game. Just what you said about his play. My thought is , what are nellie and mullin seeing in him?

POB though, the guy has a chip on his shoulder now, like " you were all wrong". It seems like he read what everyone said on GSOM, and he's out for blood. I hope he continues this kind of play that none of us saw coming.

100% agreed about Pat Burke getting cut right away, we dont need TWO players on this squad with poor shot clock IQ.

I hope we see Wright and Lasme in game 2......

I wonder why
Nellie played Pat Burke and Tierre Brown as much as he did.  Those two have almost zero chance of making the team right?  I really wanted to see Wright and Lasme too because they didn't get to play in the summer league.

It's like a job interview I guess..
Wanted to see what kinda tricks they were gonna pull out there hats... or somethin' like a dance showdown to see if they'll make the "So you think you can dance " cut (lol) anyways... what was burke thinkin' shootin' that J with minutes winding down in the 4th?!?! reminds me of the dude from The Shield!

Burke might have been
thinking that Nellie was going to grill him for passing up an open 3. LOL My family was screaming "NOOO!!" when he chucked up that 3 with 10 seconds to go.  Seemed like a bonehead play Pietrus would do.

dont forgot POB
had 3 blocks in 19 minutes...pretty good

My assessment
Pietrus - The knack is, alot of last year is still embedded in him. Like bricked shots and fouls. But he looked alot better bringing the ball up and even pulling off the dribble except of course, he needs to start making those shots. I think his problem defensively is he tends to overplay his man, thus committing irritating fouls. He is almost the same Pietrus all right, but considering now that he's not our 6th, 7th guy off the bench anymore, maybe he can find that niche and play within himself. Like Nellie said last year, he's a good player but he cracks if you put too much responsibility on him.

Hudson - I can't believe you are praising Hudson while prosecuting Pietrus. Minus the game winner, I think they deserve to be on the same boat, at least for this game. I disagree when you said, "The few times he drove to the basket he either converted a layup or kicked it out for an open look." He missed a couple of those lay-ups and I don't remember him kicking-out. He is money from the FT line tho. But didn't we have the same problem with Monta. Once he drives, expect him to shoot. He does gives us one plus tho, he can step in when Monta struggles/disappear.

Pat Burke - love his videos. Unfortunately, he's better working with Thunder than Boom Dizzle.

Croshere - love the hustle. I have a feeling he'll get a chunk of playing time until he wears out his welcome. Yes, I would love to see Lasme and Wright, but for what he has shown me this game, I'm not ready to protest against him just yet.

Tierre Brown - It looks like we're not gonna have a Matt Barnes story this year. Again, he is just reminiscent of what Monta brings to the table, just a lot less. He did look more like a PG to me than Hudson tho.

POB - It's probably a strength problem but Bynum and Mihm were able to push him really low on the block. He compensates for having that long arm but once he face the like of Dwight Howard and Boozer who will be looking to slam it in, he'll have a real problem. On the plus side, he showed alot of hustle hence the 12 rebounds and 3 blks. Hopefully he keeps it up.

Buike - We already know the starters looked good but I just want to zone in on Buike. Based on this game, he looks like a more polished Jrich minus some of those hops and heart. He's not short on hops tho as evident on what we saw last night. But what I really want to talk about is rebounding, that's what I like about this kid. He follows through whenever someone shoots the ball. That increases his chance of getting the rebound and he came away with 9 tonight.

Belinelli - That fade away off the screen will be a deadly weapon once he starts making it regularly. I would still want him to try and square up because that improves his markmanship but if he can master it, he'll be "unstoppable baby." Good all-around performance. his D was good but I can see him costing us alot of offensive rebounds. Also, I wish he'll  be more explosive driving to the basket. He's athletic enough but it looks to me he wants to avoid contact and passes the ball when he sees a defender closing in. I would like him to draw the foul every now and then since he's one of the better FT shooter.

It was a GREAT pre-season game that gave us almost everything. Starters looked really good. Buike and Belinelli was able to hold up that SG spot..etc. Still, it leaves us wanting some, especially with regards to the rookies. But it feels good to know the season is just around the corner.

Some laker tidbits:

Kobe is one deadly scorer. I hope he remains happy/odd/frustrated and plays his 'whine' games with the Lakers organization.

Coby Karl looks like Silas from the DaVinci Code.

Javaris Crittenton looks like Dave Chappelle's lost brother.

It's a start!
'Buike took care of some worries of picking up rebounds at the two. He was great last night, nough said. POB also shined. If he can continue to improve that will give us some nice depth behind Biedrins. Croshere was also a pleasant surprise. Good idea to have him out their with Biedrins to help on the glass.
Barnes looked horrible. He looked like one of the training camp invitees. He needs to control himself on the floor and pick his spots. Pietrus is a much better player than Barnes, even though he did not seperate himself by much last night. T-Hud showed why he is not a good option as a back-up point. Except for coming up big at the end, he looked bad. There was a reason why the lakers left him open and concentrated on Azibuike in the end.

By the way
Still had some trouble rebounding the ball on the defensive end. Luckily it seems we can outscore people to give us some space to give up a few second chance points.

Recap-Hawaiian Style
Starters: BD, SJax, Big Al, Andris and Buike all looked great.  41 points in the 1st quarter looked great-enough said!

Buike:  Man that guy looked great.  Ball handling, shot selection, court awareness, rebounding, intensity and mad hops have made him a lot better than last year.  Buike was really refreshing to see as the direct replacement for JRich.  He should be perfect for the SG, especially now that he knows he has something to lose.

THUD:  He's the best 3rd string PG in the NBA.  I'm stoked we picked him up as a back up for BD and Monta.  Let's just hope when we need him, it's so that we can rest the starters because they are winning by 25 in the 4th.

Belinelli:  He looked sharp.  We saw a tiny dose of what he is able to do.  Court awareness is off the charts, his "coolness" is fun to watch, he has a hair trigger release with good results and he isn't afraid to grab the bull by the horns.  Belinelli reminds me of a combo of John Paxon and Ray Allen.  Hi basketball IQ with a little athleticism and a great touch.

Barnes:  He looked rusty.  His foot is killing him and it showed.  No worries in the long run though.  He tried to do a little too much, but once he gets back on the bike, he'll remember how to ride.  At the least his mistakes all had to do with what was a good idea, he just didn't execute as the case with some bad passes and missed shots.  Just give Matty some time and he'll be fine.

POB:  Looks like he had a slight chip on his shoulder.  Was it me or does he look like Marcus Camby?  You could tell things were making sense to him instead of over thinking everything and screwing up because of it.  He ran the floor very well, moved around the key well, blocked and changed shots, rebounded well when 1-2 defenders were around him and he looked more at ease and not so tense.  I think with the combo of getting demoted to the NBADL and getting NO LOVE at all from Nellie, POB realized he had to step it up or he would be gone really quick.  Let's just hope he can do the same next time out.

MP2:  Same ole same ole.  He is truly a bench player that will help out, SJax, Beli, Barnes, Harrington and Buike.  He needs to learn how to dribble, he needs to learn how to take a shot that isn't on the baseline and he needs to work on his D.  He used to be the man on D but now he worries too much about his baseline 3 pointer and what funny thing he'll say on TV.

Pat Burke:  He wasn't bad, but he won't make the 12 man rotation.  The 15 man rotation, yes.  He's a guy that hustles, pounds and throws off other teams opponents like Yao and Duncan enough to help his team out.  Sorry, but I don't see Burke suited up too much this year.

Austin Croshere:  Another guy who wasn't too bad.  I see him coming in to land 8-10 minutes a night where he will probably get you a 3 here and there along with a couple boards.  He played just like he has his entire career last night-good, but not bad or great by any means. Brandan Wright will eat up his potential to play more.

That leads me to this.  Who is going to be the 12 man vs. the 15 man roster?  Is there enough room for a guy like Burke, Lasme, Perovic, Brown, Powell on our 12 man roster?  If Lasme stays, that means Croshere, MP2 or POB is gone.  The Dubs have A LOT of players that are good.  It's a good predicament to be in, but it should be interesting nonetheless!  Go Dubs!!!
