OPEN THREAD: Preseason Game #3 - Warriors vs Clippers

ClipperFanMoments.jpg
Stay up ClipsNation! I feel you.
Dub Nation was where you're at just a few months back.

Warriors (W-L): 2-0 (preseason)

Clippers (W-L): 0-2 (preseason)

Time: 6:00pm PST

Could it be? Do the Dubs really have a shot at 3 straight wins against the arch rival LA squads? Sure it's meaningless (I think I'm now up to 87 times for those of you counting at home), but I seriously love me some good old fashioned...

BEAT LA!

I couldn't be more excited about this upcoming season and opening night against the Utah Jazz aka GSoM Night II (we roll 775+ deep!), but I'll let you in on a little secret. Deep down inside I'm worried that the 2k7-2k8 Warriors are going to replicate the disaster that was the 2k6-2k7 Clippers. If you remember back 2 seasons ago, the Clippers were the feel good story of the 2005-2006 NBA Season. They ended a seemingly endless playoff drought, were pretty fun to watch, and made it to the second round of the playoffs for a pretty hard fought battle against the Phoenix Suns. Pretty much out of nowhere they became the best team in LA and a force to be reckoned with even in the uber-loaded Western Conference. But most importantly they emphatically ended a culture of suck. Then as we know it came crashing down for them last season. The suck was just too strong to overcome.

I know there's really not much of comparison in terms of coaching, fans, personnel, and brand of hoops between the 2007-2008 Warriors and the 2006-2007 Clippers (actually none whatsoever), but still the worry is in the back of my mind. Will the suck return for the Warriors before they even made back to back trips to the playoffs? I don't think so, but you never really know. Anything can happen- good or bad.

Just like they say in Hoops History 101:

Those who cannot remember the suck are doomed to repeat it.

Well believe you me, we'll never forget the Marc Jackson type "Unstoppable Baby!" that pervaded Warrior culture for over a decade here at GSoM.

Hash and I will be attendance for tonight's game, so definitely come and by and say whassup. I'm guessing the friendly security guards won't be all that amused at our many attempts to sneak down and pretend like we belong in the courtside seats, so you can catch us in Section 109 Row 27 Seats 15 and 16. Just holla at yo boys Ashish and Shailo. We're the two good looking brown fellas in Warriors gear.

We'll also be there at the Rookie Training seminar event for season ticket holders from 3:00pm to 4:30pm. This is the first time the GSoM crew are season ticket holders (much more on that soon!), so we could really use the rook training camp and some pointers from the Warriors season ticket vets at the event. I'm just hoping we have a better rookie campaign than POB had last season. Hope to see you there!

Predictions

  • Warriors win by 1- but really, it doesn't matter since the game is meaningless.
  • This preseason's biggest surprise Patrick O'Bryant wins the game on a thrilling, exciting, spinning, eyes-closed, last second jumper from the top of the key, but when it's all said and done it's still meaningless because it's just the preseason.
  • I'll have better predictions this season for regular season games that actually count for something and aren't meaningless.
  • You're incredibly sick and annoyed of me telling you how meaningless the preseason games are.
  • Hash and I have a great time out! No Diggity. No Doubt.

THROW UP THAT W!

Win or lose check back later tonight for Hash and my takes on the Rookie Training and the game...

Ah, sorry to hear that
Hornets Arena is in Bricktown, a pretty safe place, usually away from homeless, and I'd park in a Bass Pro Shop parking lot...so yeah, no hobos.

So yeah, I'd totally understand that.

It's always scary when there's a lot of high expectations from a team, and I totally feel you on the Clippers demise. . .but when I read this:
Deep down inside I'm worried that the 2k7-2k8 Warriors are going to replicate the disaster that was the 2k6-2k7 Clippers.

The first thing that popped up in my head was:

Don't you put that Voodoo on me, Ricky Bobby!"

Just win, baby!

No, wait.

That's different.

But it's the same.

Whatever.

22-14 Clips after one
Our starters (minus Biedrins) totally crap the bed against the worst team in the NBA. Baron, Jax, Barnes, and Harrington a combined 1-12 with five turnovers. Way to impress the home crowd.

Just preseason
but this seemed to be an issue last year occasionally.  Bad shooting and no ability or willingness to either take it to the rim or get the ball to a big inside (not really there game)

Both baron and in particular JAX can have some really poor shooting nights

Add to that a Harrington disappearing act and a little Matt Barnes off the bench and there you go

If they go cold at the wrong time it kills them at the end of games too.  Just can't get to the rim

To torture you
Same reason Fathead Nelson has played Pat Fvcking Burke 19 minutes and Brandan Wright 7.

Look how much more efficient Burke was:

Wright: 19 mins, 2-3 fg, 6 points, 1 block, 1 steal, 0 turnovers
Burke: 7 mins, 2-8 fg, 4 points, 0 block, 0 steal, 2 turnovers

But you know, why waste valuable preseason minutes on a D-leaguer like Wright when you can get a good long look at Pat Burke?

yeah, but it looks like
our main guys still haven't learned how to win ugly. we had this problem last year where whenever no ones shot was falling, baron, jax, barnes, pietrus, (& technically jrich as well) would resort to chucking up 3's as if there was a 10 point shot.

at least harrington & hudson are attacking.

Went to game
Here are my thoughts:

The Clippers did a much better job with their FA acquisitions.  Instead of signing Austin Croshere and  Troy Hudson, they signed Rubben Patterson and Brevin Knight, for about the same money.  Ruben Patterson is the FA steal of the season.  $1.2 million a year for a guy coming off a 18.5 PER, with a career PER of 17.2.  Brevin Knight looked 10,000 times better than Troy Hudson out there.

Hudson: I think he will be cut at some point this season.  He doesn't really run the point, he's not good at running the break, he can't shoot and is not really a threat to stop anyone on defense.  He brings that veteran savy, however.

Croshere: He'll will stick around, however.  He's a skilled big man, kind of awkward looking for Nellie ball, but Nelson will play him during certain match-ups.

Wright:  I liked him.  He is a really unusual player.  I can't think of a comparison.  Looks like George Gervin, runs and jumps like Monta, has a soft touch around the basket but defends like a rookie.  Nelson has voiced his plan to send him to the D-league but it may work out that Wright gets some playing time in the mean time.  I think Nelson may figure out to effectively use him by mid-season, and the Warriors will be the better for it.

POB:  Had trouble guarding Kaman down low, and picked up four fouls in about 8 minutes, but looked good in the process.  A mobile big man with a good feel for the game, aside from his post defense, doesn't have an obvious weakness now that his motor is running.  It would be great if Nelson keeps playing him so he can pick up experience, particuarly on D.

Belinelli:  Not a fan.  He has mostly an exeterior game, doesn't really create much, will go to the hoop if overplayed, but not a finisher, per say.  Lost on defense.  Admittedly, he had a poor game.   His quick shot looks better than it is effective.

Azubuike:  Didn't have a great game.  Looks to be an avergish NBA player, which under the circumstances, is pretty good for the Warriors.

Burke: Played too much.

Of the returning players:  Harrington looked very active, hustling for rebounds, although otherwise had a poor game.  B-Davis was the class of the field and only seemed to be going at 75%.  Jackson looked awful on offense.  Barnes looks healthy.

I have four tickets for tomorrow night's game, but don't think I'll go. I couldn't sell them on line.   I'll e-mail them to the first person who wants them - for free baby!
