Injury Updates (10/15)

-- The Baron Davis Watch has already begun.Davis had some knee soreness after playing 12 minutes in the opener and wasn't a big fan of the Stan Sheriff Center court. That prompted Nelson to rest him Thursday night and experiment with Jackson at point guard

Or am i just paranoid?

[Moderator's Note, by OptionZero]:

A couple of our boys got dinged up, so I'll use this diary to collect any reports that come up. If you find any, post it in comments and I'll add it so all can see.

From Geoff Leopper of the SJ Mercury News:

Forwards Matt Barnes (left knee), Mickael Pietrus (strained back) and Lasme (sprained left ankle) were all walking well as the team got onto its charter jet back to the mainland Friday.

10/15 Injury Updates from SF Gate

A Warriors spokesman said guard Monta Ellis (sprained neck) has received medical clearance to play and that it is now up to Ellis to decide on his return date. Ellis, who experienced tingling in his arms after a scary collision with Wright in Hawaii, declined to answer questions. ... Andris Biedrins (sprained toe), Mickael Pietrus (strained back) and Stephane Lasme (sprained ankle) also did not play Sunday. Lasme is expected to miss at least a week.

hmm
I'm hoping your just paranoid :) At any rate this is does concern me a bit. Maybe he just didn't like the court. It did seem REALLY dark in there from the broadcast of the first game.

Let's Go Oakland! Gas, Brake, Dip.

Or at least since the old Boston Garden
There were dead spots on that thing where you could dribble the ball down and it wouldn't come back up.

aw =(
It's probably just sore from all the workouts during training camp. His knees will get better very soon, hopefully.

Worried?
Hell yeah we should be worried. Scared s#!%less more like. The words "Baron" and "knee pain" have been found in the same sentence far too many times in the past few years for us not to be concerned.

by ffgolden on Oct 13, 2007 1:28 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

sore knees= no fun...
Sore knees take a while to get back...I fucked mine up doing roughly 1000 lbs on the leg press (I weigh 170) and it took about 3 months for them to come back to nearly normal (not sure if they'll ever fully recover)...hopefully this article is baseless. If Baron's having more knee trouble than usual than the seasons already in jeopardy.

by Prophit on Oct 13, 2007 3:10 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

probably different
Baron's knee problems have been a haunting problem for him for a few years already.  It's probably a different sort of knee problem than the kind you get from leg pressing 1000lbs(he's 215).
I pray i never have to use a gun again.

Wright and Perovic
As I speculated, according to the article, Nelson expects those two to play in the D-League.  O'Bryant and Lasme likely will stay with the team.

Looks like the Warriors might start the season going 11 deep.  Although they'll probably get the rotation down to 9 or 10 players for the bulk of the season.

by San Francisco Slim on Oct 13, 2007 8:50 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Lasme
Lasme staying and Wright going to the D-league jives with what Nelson's been saying, except that Lasme's had a couple injuries. Didn't he get hurt again?!

Then, Pietrus and Barnes might not be 100%...

So if we end up with some injuries, Wright might stick for a while just as a body.

Questions? Complaints?

Wright to D-league...
I'd actually much rather see Wright get a ton of minutes in the D-league than see him warming the bench in the NBA.

I think way too much stigma is attached to a D-league assignment, probably because it's such a new phenomenon in hoops. (And maybe secondarily because of the bad connotations of "D": Demerit, Demotion, grade D, etc. They really need to hire a marketing-type to rename the thing).

I wish I had a nickel for every MLB superstar who's been sent down to AAA at some point in his career to refine some aspect of his game, rather than just collect dust on a professional bench.

Wright will be fine -- probably much better than fine. It's not that big of a deal.

D-League
I agree about the D-league. I think it is an underrated tool at the disposal of GMs and coaches. Hopefully it will continue to grow until each NBA team has their own D-League team so that they can run the same system and reinforce the same things that are important to the NBA team. That is usually the major hang up that coaches have about sending a guy down, they don't know what the D-League coach will be teaching their players.

People think it is kind of a joke but every year we are seeing more and more examples of guys who just needed that extra year or two to refine their game and get NBA ready (Kaz for example). I think we will see the stigma vanish with a few more success stories and the continued expansion of the league.

the only problem
I see with drafting a guy who needs seasoning is financial:
  • Under the rookie scale, we get the kid for 4 years guaranteed at less than the MLE.
  • If you draft a kid that can produce immediately at  average levels, you are effectively "ahead" of the game, getting production for less than market price.
  • If you draft a kid that needs development, you lose years where you're paying that cheap price, because you're effectively getting nothing
  • the only way to come out ahead is if, sometime during that 4 years of control, the kid becomes productive at a far above-average level
  • this is in part the reasoning why I advocated the Noah pick- he doesn't need D-league time, he can give us 4 years of average production for rookie prices; Wright might not. Now, the emergence of POB makes it easier to swallow that, but ultimately, if Wright needs time to develop, then our "reward" for drafting him is diminished

Questions? Complaints?

Well...
Thats true, ideally it would be great to only draft guys who can come in and produce immediately. Unfortunately if you want a chance at getting a top five type player you have to take chances now and then. With guys coming out so early it is kind of a crap shoot if you don't have the top pick (even then really).

It might be good strategy to always draft on value a la moneyball, but we both agree that if you want to be in title contention you have to have one of those handfull of really special players. If you already have one of those guys I agree completely on your draft strategy, but seeing as we don't, I don't mind drafting a project now and then (as long as he has a chance of being one of those guys). Whether or not Brandan could be one of those players is another discussion but it would seem that by going with him over Noah that Mulson thinks he might be.

Back to the D-league; I think that as long as GM's continue to draft on potential (which they will as long as the age limit is not raised again) it would be nice to have a good place to let them get real game experience in the same system they will eventually play in under the appropriate supervision. Plus it would be fun as a fan to be able to follow the production of your teams prospects instead of watching them sit on the bench with a sad look on their face.

Maybe nelli & bd
are just being extra cautious.  The season is long and if they can stretch out bd's shelflife by doing so early on, then it may not be a bad idea.  Look, I know our w's live and die by BD, but it may be a good thing that his pt be limited early in the season.  If nelli truly wants to limit bd's avg mins to less than 30 a game,  It would be easier to have him play like 20-25mins/game the first, say, 20 games and then make it a game to game thing from there, 'cuz It'll be xtra difficult to do that in the second half of the season.  Hell, I'd even suggest the dubs give him a day off whenever the nba's worst come to town.

Injury Update Post?
Hey Op Zero...

Can we possibly add to the title of this post "injury update"?

I've been looking and haven't been able to find anything substantial on Lasme or Peiturs.  Would like to hear if anyone out there has read anything about the seriousness of their injuries.

Sounds like Pietrus should be back right away, but Lasme might be sitting awhile.  Obviously this affects speculation on who will be joining the team at month's end while Jax is out.

Is it the same knee
he had surgery on last year?

if our
key guys are slightly hurt, i think Nelson shouldnt even play them one minute. Instead let them rest and heal for the games that really count.

lasme over wright
makes sense for now in that Lasme already offers rebounding and defense of the rim, at least as a help defender; also, he's considered to have limited upside, while Wright is widely regarded as a potential star--just not now.  Lasme is older and what we see is probably what we're going to get, and what we're going to get isn't so bad for a second round pick--a guy who can board and block shots AND get out on the fast break should occasion arise.

2 Points...
First point:

I think its funny as hell that we traded someone (JRich) for a D league player.  No mater the situation, Wright should be thinking to himself, " WTF, I went to UNC, was a baller down there, had national recognition and was said to be a top 3 lottery pick and now I'm getting sent down to the D League for some dude who no one up until the hoops frenzied Dubs fans even knew about?!"

Second point:

BD having knee pains?  WHAT A SHOCKER!   If BD could barely run yet walk after the Jazz series, why would you think his knee would recover in 3 months with all the exercise and training?  Come on Monta and THUD, I hope you two can help us out when the inevitable "Oh Sh*t" happens to our ballerific BD.  I'm still in shock BD never had surgery...

10/14 Contra Costa Times...
Injury updates: Rookie forward Stephane Lasme is out for at least 10 days with a sprained left ankle incurred while trying to block a shot by the Lakers' Vladimir Radmanovic in Thursday's exhibition game. Guard Monta Ellis (sprained neck) did not practice Saturday and is out for Sunday and Monday's games. Andris Biedrins (sprained left big toe) and Pietrus (mid-back and ribcage strain) also did not practice Saturday but are considered game-time decisions for Sunday. Barnes practiced and is expected to be available Sunday.

It's all on Baron..
we're deep enough this year that other people can miss games here  and there....we shouldn't be worried about little tweeks....except with Baron...always reason for concern when the words "Baron," "knees" and "health" pop up....
