Around SBN: The 2009-2010 Card Chronicle Big East basketball preview

A few notes/ questions?

Firstly, still no news on the Varajeo/ Pavolvoic signings?  If they do not sign by the time the season starts (3 hours or so), what happens to them?  Are the unrestricted?  Any shot Andy comes here?  Do they just not play this year?  Someone help me cuz I'm confused.

Also, OptionShrute's man-crush Jackie Butler is officially an unrestricted FA, any word on whether the dubs have interest or even whether he would be a good fit.  He kinda reminds me of Tractor Traylor.  Not a good thing.

Also, someone threw around Bernard Robinson's name is a possible trade proposal.  Now that he's a fa, any shot of him coming on?

Is it too late to add free agents?  My head hurts.

Looking for help, dan

I was just on ESPN.com, Pavlovic signed a 3 year deal, I'll get the link shortly.

As for signing anybody else I don't think we can since I'm almost 100% positive we are at our 15 man limit for the roster.

Varejao/Pavlovic
The Cavs own their rights for this year because they extended the qualifying offer.

The Cavs can extend the qualifying offer again next year to Varejao ($1M roughly) and Pavlovic ($3M roughly) and retain their rights again. Varejao and Pavlovic will continue to be restricted free agents,  meaning the Cavs have the right to match any offer sheet signed by either guy.

No team has cap space to sign them to anything larger than the MLE (if even that). They know that if they do so, the Cavs will just match and keep both guys. As a result, the Cavs only have to offer a shade more than what any one else can, and they will be the biggest practical offer.

Reportedly they offered Varejao the same deal as Gooden (roughly $6M/year), but he is seeking closer to $9-10M. I haven't heard what they offered Pavlovic.

If those two want to "leave" they need to work out a trade satisfactory to Cleveland OR sign the QO, play one year, then leave as a UFA.

For now, they can't get paid what they want from any other NBA team. They could do whatever they want in Europe, but if they want to play for the NBA again, it will be with the Cavs on the Cavs' terms.

Jackie Butler
He is an unrestricted free agent. We COULD sign him to the minimum, but we would have to cut someone. I'd waive Pavlovic and eat his contract to get Butler. Look up his per/40 numbers and they're ridiculous.

The problem with adding anyone is that we are at 15 players. Lasme and Kosta are the bottom 2 guys on the roster, but Lasme is interesting enough to keep. Kosta has $3.5M left on his contract, so anyone you want to add has to be worth signing AND eating Kosta's contract.

Bernard Robinson
Do you like Bernard Robinson more than Lasme? Is he better than Azubuike, Barnes, or Jackson? If the answer is no, then NO it doesn't make much sense to add him.

Roster spots are valuable, and I don't think NBA GM's have quite realized that when filling out the end of their rosters. You should never burden yourself with an expensive project like Kosta and justify it with "he's just a roster filler"...because a roster spot open lets you grab these undervalued guys at the end (like Hassan Adams, Beno Udrih, Jackie Butler, etc).
