B. Wrights Future?

Someone mentioned yesterday their displeasure with the Warriors in regards to the "old news" J Rich trade for B Wright.  I'm way over it as many of you are, but a question keeps popping up in my head.  What's up with B. Wright's future?  Thus far, he was added to the team simply to clear up $.  Also, B. Wright has been involved in discussions regarding the D League which is scary considering POB, Kosta and Lasme make up the bottom of the barrel for the Dubs roster.  My question is, what do you think the future looks like for B. Wright during this season?

Will he be on the 12 man roster?

Will he be sent down to the D League?

Will he come off the bench and contribute 10-15 minutes a night?

A very small piece of me thinks the Warriors got a little too cute with this trade for B. Wright, but the kid looks good.  I want him to play ASAP so he can slowly develop some NBA game.  10 or so minutes a night would be a great start.  Watch yall think?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I suspect Nelson won't do it, but...
...I would really like to see Wright get at least around ten minutes a night or so. Yeah, he's very young and very thin, but by all accounts he's also very smart, and he's a fleet footed forward who can board.

D-League maybe not so bad...
It's called the developemental league for a reason...while the coaching and competition isnt NBA level getting 30 minutes a night may be better than riding the pine in the bigs...

He's a Big Part of the Future
He's got talent and a great attitude.  He's not a sleepwalker like POB.  He'll stick around, maybe go down for some time but there will be no doubt about resigning him when the time comes.
Nothing better than "The City".

Big Part of our future
if he survives the trade deadline.

Wright's future might actually depend on Ellis as much as anything else: if Monta's passing and handles improve then the warriors will be less willing to let him go and might turn their eye toward the future.  Wright's speed makes him an excellent running mate for Ellis in two -three years down the road...

If Ellis doesn't progress pass being just a really, really quick scorer, the dubs might feel the pressure to win now and deal young talent away for an all-star forward.

The prospect of starting Monta, Wright, and Andris in a couple years is hard to pass up but let's face it: in order for that lineup to work, Monta's got to  get his teammates involved.

Down to the D-league
Barring an injury to some one on the active roster, Wright is headed down to the D-league. It is kind of disappointing that the Warriors made the trade to get a kid that is not ready to contribute now (although from the warriors perspective, their is 10 million reasons why they traded J-Rich.)
I see a lot of potential, and the D-League would probably be the best for him to allow him to develop. Sitting at the end of the bench in a suit isn't going to improve him as a player.

D-League...
Man, I hope not.  I understand that he was basically the "abortion" that was the failed Kevin Garnett deal - but I was hoping he'd be contributing regularly to our rotation out the gate.  We never even worked the guy out.  Nellie is short-term, and practically our entire roster is a FA at years end.

Yesterday, I posted something in regards to Wright and had my "knowledge of the sport" and "dedication as a fan" questioned.  Jeez, can we not disagree with a transaction that our team makes??  Not like Mullin has never made a mistake and everything he touches turns to gold...

I never said, "he sucks."  I just feel that we could have and should have gotten someone to contribute immediately.  And to bash JRich's skills to make us feel better about the move is silly.  Most people on this site would have gladly taken a golden shower from JRich last year and liked it.

workouts
I think the "we never worked the guy out" thing is completely overblown and damn close to being totally irrelevant.  Brandan Wright was not an unknown entity.  He played in a top notch conference and logged minutes there from the get-go.  He had been scouted around the league all season.  He had been scouted around the league since he was a junior in highschool and was the new no-highschooler rule in place, he'd have been a lottery pick a year earlier based on the same potential. His raw physical measures were there from from combine workout.  What exactly were they going to be able to tell?  That he was a physically talented specimen who was still very thin and had many areas of his game to work on to be a finished product?  Everyone knew that already.  What they could have discovered that wasn't known (and presumably have discovered) was minimal.

I think it is opinion vs. opinion
... on this one JAE.  I know you know your stuff, I read and respect your posts all the time.  But I think your post is your opinion, my post was mine.  I definitely don't believe you are right (or Wright, haha) - and can't say if I am right either.

I'd love to see someone throw something together that says how many lottery picks get drafted by a team that never worked them out.  I bet it would be interesting.

by UweBlab on Nov 1, 2007 3:16 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think I heard it somewhere
that lottery picks don't exactly work out for teams whose first pick is #18-19.  Especially those coming from such a high profile school as North Carolina.
THIS IS OOOAKLAND!!!

pree
I think I remember pree saying something along those lines. If you are expected to go top 5 or 10 it is very unusual to work out for teams in the mid teens unless there is a deal practically done for them to move up.

I've probably said this before...
but I wish NBA teams could draft players and provide them some income while letting them continue to play in NCAA.

They could have an incentive laden contract that specifies graduation and a number of other things.

The D League does not develop talent as well as most NCAA schools.

Sink or Swim Time
throw him up in the water and see if he sinks or swims, its that easy. He might even be so impressive if you throw him in the game for 15 minutes or so, make him learn fast, he's got the tools. He might actually do something good, this isn't the NFL where he'll get crushed, he'll stand strong. Can it really hurt that bad to put him in for 10 min, I ask this:

Could we possible get out-rebounded by any more?

Put a little mustard on it

by The Barnes Supremacy on Nov 1, 2007 3:35 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree...
My brother and I were talking about that very thing at the game the other night.  Why not put him out there and see what he can do?  We don't have any quality 4's or 5's after Biedrins... it couldn't hurt to give him some run.  Like you said, it's not like he'll get hurt, or beat up - he'll just get pushed around (which is already happening when we play bruising teams).  Confidence is the only thing that can be damaged...

by UweBlab on Nov 1, 2007 3:46 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fine, if you don't care about losing.
He might succeed in this, but I can see a significant number of 12-0 runs by the opposition when Wright takes a gun out of our offense while being pushed around on defense.  I'm not saying this will happen, but the notion that 15 mpg won't really make a difference in the outcome is probably naive. The Warriors are still going to struggle for a playoff spot this year.  It's entirely plausible that more PT for Wright will equate to more losses for the team.

Nelson, winning
If Nelson thought even 2-5 minutes from Wright would help us win, he'd throw him in there. Coach sees him every day, competing against NBA players.

If he gets sent to D-league, it's not the "mistake" I'm upset with, the trade is (and yes, I know there were financial considerations blah blah blah).

by hardcore on Nov 1, 2007 5:32 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I thought this was common sense
and who knows how Wright will turn out, but (outside of the usual rookie transition to the NBA game & lifestyle) it's his body that is not NBA ready. There is a reason why some high schoolers were able to contribute and play immediately while others were not. They had NBA bodies - see Lebron, Amare, Dwight Howard. Those that didn't (like Kobe, J. O'neal, McGrady, Rashard) hardly played their 1st few years.

and unlike pob, nellie & co. are high on Wright:

http://media.knbr.com/knbr/1101riley.mp3

i'm not going to rehash the idea that the dubs are trying to make the playoffs - i'm w/ JAE on these points.

All three?
I'm hoping he does all three of those things this year. He's going to start out in the D-league and I'm hoping that by the end of the season he is on the 12 man roster playing around 10 min when the matchups are appropriate. This may be very optimistic but that's what I'd love to see.

Wright may be in the rotation during the season
I would echo your comments.  I think it's a fait d'accompli that Wright starts the season in the D-League. But he's athletic, long and can rebound, and those are all things that Nellie and the Warriors could use.

When Nelson has a better idea about how the  pieces fit with this particular roster, he may  try to incorporate Wright into the mix.

I like the J-Rich/Wright trade in the long run.  But, in the short run it clearly hurts the Warriors.  That's a given.

However, the current Warriors roster is a  work in progress.   We may  see further changes at PG, BG and PF, as well as use of the TPE, before the trade deadline.

Wright
is simply not going to be ready yet.  And the minutes we'd have to sacrifice for him in the NBA could cost us wins.

To give you an idea about how physically UNready he is: Brandan Wright weighs 20 pounds less than Kevin Durant.  And Nelly isn't going to stick Wright at SG like Durant in SEA to hide his lack of strength..
