Do you love this game?

For me, i could pretty much watch basketball 24/7/365.  If it's a Warriors game then dammit that makes it 10x more important to me.  I've found myself watching women's basketball and televised high school games if there were no NBA games on at the time.  I've played pick-up games all my life... played in high school... played in local tourneys.  I watch NBA-TV more than any other channel that it drives my wife bananas.  I think it's safe to say that i love this game.

But recently i was on a non-sports related message board and a thread was started by someone excitedly announcing that the new NBA season has begun.  To my surprise, roughly 80-90% of the replys in the thread were along the lines of "who cares?" and "F--- basketball, it's football season" and even "Basketball is boring. The NBA season is too long."

Damn!  That's blasphemy in my eyes.  Basketball is my number 1 favorite sport, with football coming in second, and all other sports virtually tying for last.

So, how much do you love this game?  Where would you rank it in terms of your favorite sport?

Tough question
I'd rank football, baseball, and basketball close to even, depending on the time of year and how good my team is. Tennis and golf are an extremely distant #4/5, basically only interesting to me when Tiger or Federer is playing. Everything else I could easily live without, though if my wife twists my arm I'll watch women's figure skating with her (especially when Miki Ando is on the ice).

But I think one needs to distinguish between the games per se and the organizations (NFL, NBA, MLB, etc.) that package them for the mass consumption. Basketball is a fabulous game, no doubt, but Stern's fascistic ways and the tedium of the NBA regular season do tend to annoy me. I'd love to see a 50-game season and an extra round or two of playoffs, with maybe a bye for the top seeds to reward teams who take the regular season seriously.

At a deeper level, I think organized hoops will always be somewhat of a flawed product because of its dependence on refereeing. Obviously, the other big two sports have this issue too, but not quite to the same degree. A bad (or paid-off) ref can literally take over a game. Topic for another discussion...

I love this game
I have NBA league pass and watch a game or two every day. I have two tv's set up to watch two games at the same time. It helps that I'm in a million fantasy leagues so there's always something to root for even in blowouts. I don't know about watching WNBA though - you must REALLY love this game, lol
It's almost like the Warriors have 6 guys out there... they always have a guy open! - Jon Barry commentating game 3 last year

#1
No question #1.  I live for bball, I'm a much happier person during NBA/NCAA season.  March Madness is a terrific month, the NBA playoffs are my second favorite time of the year (next to the holidays).  I get a high/rush/peaceful state of being off just being on a court and getting shots up...it's amplified when I get to actually play a pick-up game.

It's a beautiful game and I love it.

By far...
Basketball is my favorite sport. Strangely enough I didn't really watch basketball at all until about 1997. I grew up watching a lot of football and not much else, but  I kind of lost interest in it when I started to get into music (middle school) and started my first band.

I really discovered my passion for basketball in my friends driveway while taking breaks at band practice. Shooting a basketball is like a drug (not that I really know). There is something that calls you to repeat that motion until you get it down.

At that point I just started watching a lot of TNT games and all the other national broadcasts that were on (NBC?). I couldn't get enough but it took me a while to catch up and understand the game, having never played any organized ball. Early on I liked the Rockets (Hakeem...oh yeah) but soon after that I discovered the W's and never loved another team again.

So obviously I'm pretty passionate about the Dubs and the NBA or I wouldn't spend so much time here, but beyond that I have only a casual interest in the Giants and Sharks. For some reason I can't really follow football anymore, which is weird because I used to love it when I was a kid.

That's ok...
I didn't start watching sports seriously until I started dating my girlfriend (who is a big time Knicks/Yankees fan...she's from NY). Then, I got hooked on the Warriors after she took me to watch them play against the Knicks (Valentine's Day last year). I started to get interested, and then, during the playoffs, was hooked. Before that, I the only basketball I watched was years ago when the Kings were playing the Lakers in the Western Conference Finals back in 2002 (I was going to school at Davis at the time, and was rooting for the Kings).

Now, during baseball season I follow the A's pretty closely, and sometimes watch Giants and Mariner's games. As soon as the A's didn't make the postseason, I switched gears to basketball, and am really excited about this season. Hell, I even went to see 1 preseason game, went to the open practice, and then was at the GSoM Night. However, I don't watch football, and don't plan to.

And there's my life story....lol.

Basketball > Football > Baseball
I used to be a huge Giants fan back in the 90s.  The thing that irks me the most about baseball is the lack of a salary cap.  I HATE the yankees.

Football is cool, but the hard salary cap kind of sucks.  Often times, teams aren't able to keep their fan favorites anymore and players move around too much.

Basketball is king.  The back-and-forth action at the end of a crucial game is so intense.  And I do like how the game's been going toward a trend of "smallball" and more uptempo, fast pace offenses.  I'm not as impressed by Shaq and other slow prodding centers.  I like it when basketball is more of a showcase of talent, athleticism, agility, and skill; and not just being taller and bigger than everybody else.
