Changes in GSoM Moderation Duties

I just wanted to let everyone know that Atma, DJ Fuzzylogic and I are taking over the moderating duties. OptionZero did a great job keeping the site free of flame wars as well as consolidating and updating the diaries. In terms of moderation, OZ taught us a lot of about how to keep the site up to the top notch level we expect. The reason Atma, DJ Fuzzylogic and I are taking over is because we feel OptionZero wasn't the right representative for GSoM in terms of personality and style. He knows a lot about hoops and will continue to contribute in the comments and diaries, but he will no longer be moderating. Now, when your diary or comment gets deleted you can't complain about OZ anymore, you'll know that either Atma, DJ Fuzzylogic or I deleted it. Anyways, a big thank you to OZ for the past few months of doing the thankless job that is moderating.

Also, I'd like to reiterate the rules around here:

  • Any comment or diary that is racist, homophobic, uses cuss words, or is a personal attack on someone else will be deleted.
  • If your diary is a repeat, we thank you for taking the time to post it, but in the interest of keeping the diaries section up to date with the most useful information and most popular topics, we're going to delete it. Before you post a diary, please make sure that someone else didn't post the same thing before. If someone has posted it, please put your thoughts as a comment in that diary.
  • Treat others with respect.
  • Above all else, we want Golden State of Mind to be a fun place for everyone to talk hoops, talk about the Bay and most importantly talk (or vent) about our Warriors.

Let me open this diary up for any suggestions you have for improving the site and the moderation of comments and diaries.

If you have any questions you'd like us to answer outside of the site, feel free to email us at goldenstwarriors@gmail.com

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Just wanted to say thanks to OZ
Seriously, moderating such a large online community like GSoM ain't easy. It's incredibly time consuming and there's always a few random fools who make things unnecessarily difficult. I hope everyone else appreciates everything he's done. He's given us a lot of constructive ideas on how to keep GSoM a fun family show and keeping the diary quality high.

Big ups to OZ for all his efforts the past few months. Much appreciated. I look forward to seeing OZ's continued hoop insights in the comments and diaries.

    im defending OZ
dont get me wrong...im not in the option zero fan club. However, im on his side IF im reading between the lines correctly.

it kind of seems like you guys are taking away his position just for arguing with you guys-"his personality and style don't match"(paraphrasing)
--so what? hes a little agressive, sure.  But I never understood the people that said "OZ YOU AREN'T ALWAYS RIGHT!" well, if he isnt, prove him wrong, its as simple as that.  As hes stated before, he believes he is, so what is the problem with that?

Also, as a moderator, I felt he never really got personal while arguing(before he was a moderator, thats a different story, he was all whiny-different story tho).  Reiterate:  I never thought he got personal during his arguments.

I can't really think of a better person for the job because the fool is on the site ALL THE TIME(or at least it seems like it).  The only potential problem i see is people possibly thinking that he his moderating duties are influenced by his relationships as a poster--however i never felt that way.

Also, to the website creators.  Dudes, I totally understand the need for a nice, upstanding, PC community...I get it completely!! u guys have a tight site, no doubt, the BEST warriors site IMO.  However, because someone is a little agressive, arrogant, or whatever doesn't really cross any lines.  Everyone does not have to agree with everyone, and they SHOULD! be in disagrement, thats how ppl learn.

If there is info i am not privy to, then maybe im off base.  Or, if OZ decided to leave on his own, then im off base as well.  But Im pretty sure u guys didnt like the way he came off and thats why hes not the moderator.  Thats kind of a dumb reason.

    1) i cant believe im defending this guy who likes John Hollinger and Ricky Davis 2)i think you guys(atma and the gang) need to take a bit of a chill pill.

    go dubs

by jrizzle on Nov 16, 2007 12:13 AM PST reply actions

    yes
Im responding to my own post.  ahem.  Also, i would like to take this time to disagree with Zero about some longheld beliefs that he might have to take out under his pillow(this post, btw, is a bit unrelated)

Just wanted to elaborate on some things....

I hope YOU know that John Hollinger MAKES UP his own statistics.  That PER, that everyone thinks is the holy grail, is based on a MADE UP SYSTEM by a guy who works for espn.com.  Do you know that Scot Van Pelt works for espn?  Or maybe Steve Levy?  Do you want Fred Hickman making up stats for you?  I sure don't.  So, this guy determines how efficient players are....according to him.  A couple of problems present themselves:

1)players like ike diogu have the same PER as Elton Brand.
2)people who don't know what they are talking about(option zero) use Ricky Davis PER to establish that he is better than JR Richardson(as nellie refers to him).  Please, please, please tell me you have seen ricky davis play.  Please.  Just tell me that you have actually watched a game or two with Ricky Davis and you still think 1)hes good or 2)hes better than Jason Richardson.  Have you ever seen Ricky Davis take a team on his back?  Or for that matter pass the ball?  I've seen Jrich do both.  But i dont know what I'm talking about, his PER is less!!

point is, PER aint all that, it sucks actually IMO, and Jason Richardson is a good hoops player.

also, u CANNOT repeat CANNOT use his PER from last year b.c. fool was injured most of the year and was not himself.

    go dubs

hey, can u contact John Buccigross and see if he can reccomend any restaurants for me in Bristol?

by jrizzle on Nov 16, 2007 12:29 AM PST up reply actions

    PER confirms
That JRich is in fact a good hoops player.

It also shows, like any other statistical or anecdotal measure you care to cite, that he isn't a great or irreplaceable hoops player, and that at $15M he's grossly overpaid.

    Also:

    career PER
    Ike Diogu: 15.4
    Elton Brand: 22.7

But it's so much easier just to make stuff up...

by Sleepy Freud on Nov 16, 2007 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

    dude!
completely agree with you! it is easier to make stuff up...

    SUCH AS!

jrich making 15 mil a year, which he doesnt

    nice tho

by jrizzle on Nov 16, 2007 10:54 PM PST up reply actions

    Indeed
It's actually $12.8M per year, $14.4M in the final year. Those $2M per are pretty important to you, evidently. My bad.

The basic point about his being grossly overpaid stands.

Your point about Diogu/Brand, on the other hand, falls flat on its face, as its conclusion is directly contradicted by the facts. Going by PER, Brand is an all-star while Diogu is just about league-average.

See the difference, or are you too satisfied with yourself to bother?

    No lines to read between
There are no lines to read between in my statement. I love OZ's knowledge of hoops and his contribution in the comments. This has nothing to do with basketball knowledge. We love the back and forth discussion between people on the site regardless of whether they agree or disagree. This decision is simply a matter of matching the GSOM "personality and style".

i been thinking about this for a while
dont know if you guys are capable of this but i think this would be really cool.

Im not sure if any of you have been to 49erswebzone.com but if you have you will notice that its a site similar to this where fans can comment with their diaries, but i think one of the main things of the site is the articles

Im 90% sure that every article written about the niners gets updated onto that VERY CONVIENT bulletin board type of thing where we can read the headline and choose if we wanna read it.

I think that type of thing would be pretty awesome around here. I think muritqua's diaries (sorry i prolly spelled your name wrong) are awesome but its just not as convient to click on the diary and THEN look for the articles. if somehow we had them all displayed as does 49erswebzone i think that would be really cool. Plus often times muritqua puts the diary up in the morning, and by the afternoon its all the way at the bottom, and on top of that, sometimes articles come out in the afternoon that don't get mentioned. Some constantly updated board like that would be incredibly convient and keep us all up date on the articles on our dubz...

Or we can just keep using muritquas diaries. Its not a problem. I just think that if its possible, it would be really convient and definetly add to the site

by NinerWarrior on Nov 16, 2007 12:21 AM PST reply actions

Great Idea, I was thinking the exact same
I really like Muritqua's daily dubs links and before I saw this comment by ninerwarrior, I was going to suggest the idea myself. It would be a great help to GSoM users, and it would save diary space. As for the idea thought of by other users of bumping diaries with new comments to the top (if possible); it might be good but in the past, I have been on a messageboard discussing Soccer (in the UK) and when people did that to really old diaries that were no longer interesting, it got quite annoying and they got in the way of newer ones. It would still work okay but just considering this when deciding whether to do it or not.
PS. You're doing a great job, guys!

    OZ taking the fall?
Not his fault the Warriors are 0-6. There was a lot less drama around here when the Dubs were winning. Joking aside, this is without a doubt one of my most frequently visited sites, but it's starting to get a little too political around here for me. I understand the need for constant moderation, but in the end this site is nothing more than an open forum for the most hard-core of Warriors faithful. Look, whether it's because of money, difference of opinion, style, whatever ... it is ultimately the owners' right to choose who best suits the site. If OZ wasn't the right guy for the job, then so be it. But please just don't lose sight of why GSOM was created to begin with...

by Epicurious Cowboy on Nov 16, 2007 12:38 AM PST reply actions

    LOL
Yes OZ is taking the fall for the 0-6 start. =)

We try to keep this site as free and fun as we can without the drama. And don't worry, we always keep in mind what makes GSOM unstoppable.

    At first OZ
and his Lakawana County badge scared me a bit, bt he was always fair in his assessments I thought.  He took his role very seriously it seemed.  As far as the site goes, maybe a live boxscore for games?  I might be missing it, but as a fan not in the bay area, I have to jump back and forth from NBA.com to the open thread during the game.  Is there a live boxscore and I am just missing it?

by belli nellie on Nov 16, 2007 12:40 AM PST reply actions

    Live boxscore
That would be cool and we requested it from the power that be at SB Nation. Hopefully in the redesign of the site, you'll get that feature. Right now, I don't have the technical know how to create an applet that would do that.

    My suggestions
I don't know if it's possible, but maybe diaries get bumped to the top if they get a new comment. So older yet live topics remain on top while others that didn't generate much interest will just go on the bottom.

Also, how do you easily access the other sections like Golden State of Design???

by lightz0ut on Nov 16, 2007 12:57 AM PST reply actions

If you look at other SB nation sites
you'll see that there are 2 or 3 versions of the SB Nation software running. GSoM seems to have the most antiquated version. The version Athletics Nation had and the new one they have has a Recommended Diaries section that brings those diaries into a separately partitioned section above the diaries section.

I was pretty offended on behalf of the GSoM maintainers that the new Sharks SB Nation site got the new software while GSoM slogs along with this version which appears to be 2 behind.

    Thank you
You three are more than capable of handling this site as well as the great community that supports it.  I don't mean to insult Option Zero- I completely respect his knowledge and passion for the game, but you made a decision in an effort to improve the quality of this blog.

I have felt like many people's comments have been scrutinized too harshly, coming from someone whose position requires more of an impartial standpoint (in my opinion).

But anyway, the show must go on, we're getting Jack back in 2 games, and I'm prepping for a major push to the top of the Pacific, baby!  Or we can tank the season and make a push for OJ Mayo or Derrick Rose.  Doesn't matter what we do! We're Unstoppable.

    OZ is a Basketball Junkie...
...with a great knowledge of almost all aspects of the game.  I usually agree with most of what he says.  It is acceptable (but annoying) when a poster like you or me tells when someone is wrong or whatever.  But when the tone of almost every email from the staff (moderator) has a "I'm smarter than you," or "you don't know what your talking about" tone - it is bad for the community.  He may not have used those exact quotes, but the tone was always there.

There are fans in here with varying levels of dedication to the team, the newbie's shouldn't get trashed by a moderator for asking a question that was posted two months ago.  Not EVERYBODY has the opportunity to check in a few times a day.

Overall, I love the site - it is an awesome place for us W junkies to catchup on insider information.  But I truly thing OZ as moderator was a negative.  I for one, and excited for the new regime...

    Permanent ticket selling diary
It's not something we want to offer right now. I understand that you trust people on GSOM more than other places, but we don't want this to evolve into a site where tickets can be bought and sold by anyone. We want the focus to be on Warriors and basketball related topics. We also need to be able to control those kinds of exchanges. That's why when there are ticket offers (GSOM Night, Pop Quiz Ticket Giveaway), they go in the main section.

    also...
this is to add on to my previous comment:

The idea to move up diaries with new comments is pretty cool, but there is one big problem

Muritquas diaries dont get commented. I know i just go on there and click on the links. never comment.

As a result, theres like 7 diaries on top of the articles for today already and its only 11am! i woke up like 20 min ago and i have to scroll all the way down to read them!

So again, im pushing for my 49erswebzone idea that i previously posted and id like to hear from one of the moderators if that would be possible or if any of the other ideas are. (we put thought into them, so we'd appreciate a response)

I understand you have not commented in here since the beginning before anyone else did, likely because of the OZ comments and its a little touchy, and thats fine whatever, just comment on the suggestions you asked for thanks. :)

    Chill
Thanks for the suggestions, but it's been what 12 hours since I posted the diary? Can I sleep and then go to work before responding to your suggestion?

As far as auto-updating the diaries and adding in news links, it's not possible yet (the redesign of SB Nation will eventually come). So, we don't control the backend of the site. What we can do is try to keep muritqua's links towards the top to keep them fresh, there's just no way of automatically doing it. I do like what 49erswebzone has done in grabbing news links and having a section for it, but our site just isn't designed to support that right now.

    at a star trek convention
First, I must say that I like this site most of the time. I believe in an open forum and I am not into censorship. However, as a long time female Warriors fan, I feel really alienated by the number of posters whose views of women sound like they were written by 12 year-old boys. I come here to get info/analysis about the Warriors. I do not come here to read juvenile irrelevant posts. If I wanted to surround myself with people who think like that, I would go to a Star Trek convention. At least the dweebs there would be amusing.

I agree with the above posts that note that it would be nice to get rid of the "if you do not agree with me you are an idiot" attitude. I think that also would alienate people and would prevent them from posting.

One of the things I have always liked about Warriors fans was that they were so accepting of every type of person. I was hoping this site would also reflect that attitude.

    Thanks for letting me rant!!!

well, we are cool. one has to wonder at a person who would stick with a crappy team so long- and watch the 4th quarter hoping vonteego can get hot and erase the 12 point defecit. that is awesome! i think it definitely requires humor.

you know, but the fact is the NBA has cheerleaders, the women themselves are just trying to find a good job or satisfy their insatiable need to cheer, but i do feel they are represented more as bodies than as talented professionals. obviously. such a weird hyper-sexualized distraction.

i used to visit RealGM and other message boards. it was just horrible. in comparison GSOM is amazing. generally people are not angrily attacking, or expressing prejudices. though i'm sure there are exceptions. what is bothersome in particular, in case i'm missing something? please speak up and keep us honest!

    vonteego, cheerleaders etc.
insatiable need to cheer--lol. actually, i was not talkiing about the living kabuki mask warriors girls who, i suppose, would be a warriors related topic.  i was talking about completely inane responses to posts. for example, i posted about baron's show on ifc. i really thought people might be interested or else i thought somebody might have more info. all i got was "that chick with baron is hot." i wasted two minutes of my life for that? i am at the age where those 2 minutes are pretty important. there are other posts that are similar to that that which my rant was about. it is not like i am a flaming feminist (or flaming anything else) either.

to tell you the truth, the "it is good to be the king" attitude was more annoying than anything else. the cop photo was pretty scary too.

i sorta missed vonteego cummings when i watched that macabi and knicks preseason game.

Now I feel kinda bad for posting that image of the "kinda hot" young woman in question. Especially since I do consider myself basically a "flaming feminist."

In my defense, the point was partly to show how impossibly high the average dude's standards of beauty are, though I can't deny there was some element of "check out this absolute babe" involved...

Just when Atma was getting nice again...
    I'm joking of course.

    Anyway, on OZ:

As a Mod, excellent. He was fair and seemed to stay on top of things to an almost unimaginable degree. Whenever I had questions or complaints he responded thoughtfully and fairly via email.

As a poster, cranky and brilliant. His tone never changed from when he first showed up and started posting constantly and challenging us all (like his very first diary IIRC breaking down the difference between us and the Suns). He is a little (very) abrasive but if you can get over it he is one of the brightest posters here.

Honestly, to me, the two sides of OZ never interfered with each other but I can see why the "founders" chose to go a different way, seeing as his tone is not at all what we expect from the main page guys.

I do worry about the "new" Mods. It's a big job and those of you who were around will remember that the whole reason OZ became a Mod is because Atma was getting burnt out and cranky himself. I think the low-point was the week he asked half the community to leave for a month and come back when we were more mature =P. Hopefully FJ and Fuzzy will take a more active roll this time around.

Haha, I can't believe I typed so much on this topic. Anyway thanks to OZ for all the hard work.

thanks for the response. I had the impression you didnt wanna comment because of the sensitivity of the OZ issue. i was wrong. you were just sleeping. No problems!

    I guess one can't be a moderator,
and a volume poster at the same time.

I swear, there were times when 70% of the posts on a certain diary were all by OZ.  Not that I didn't agree with him more than half the time.

    THIS IS OOOAKLAND!!!

I haven't really seen eye to eye w/ OZ in the past
BUT... I think that he was a great person for the job of moderating.  Like J Rizzle... I am not at all saying that I am a fan of OZ.  I do respect his knowledge of the game and I've learned quite a bit of ish from this guy, as well as others who post on this site (Sleepy, various others I can't think of).  Of course I've had plenty of conflicting views, which I've voiced, and have carried on an argument because of it.  It's basically him representing his opinions and me representing mines, nothing to do with moderating.  He did a fairly good job keeping all of the hot topics towards the top of the page and pushed others diaries which have not been as popular down, as well as merged diaries together when necessary and kepts edits on a professional basis... not because he disagreed with it but because it was disrespectful in some way.  I think that my only issue would be with editing the original diaries of posters on this site, inserting his own personal views under the original diary topic instead of posting within the diary (if that makes sense).  Basically this was a move that was made to save face, as I'm sure that the strong personality of OZ has generated a lot of complaints and turned off a lot of fans from this site.  Think about it guys:  Just because they took away his comment moderating abilities does not mean that he can't post any responses to your posts.
    MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

    Fuck this.
GSOM Staff is clearly a bunch of pushover homos. Too many complaints, coupled with OZ's blatant spanking of Atma #1 in any issue he chose to take up with him is probably the blame.

But now, instead of Atma just taking it on the ass and going about his day, he has to ruin the diary section for anyone that doesn't have a pea for a fuckin' brain. Honestly GSOM, you're about as useful to me as a fuckin' boxscore now. I'm done here. This place was at least tolerable when someone who wasn't one of the stupid pieces of shit that ruin this place was at the very least running the god damn diaries. Now it has absolutely nothing going for it. Except Pree, Sleepy, and OZ.

    OUTRO.

If OZ were still the Mod I would have never had a chance to read that comment. It would have been instantly deleted by OZ's mod superpowers. Speaking of sudden dissapearances and vanishing regulars there should be an investigation into whether or not OZ had GSDubz "offed".

    Best post ever!

If I were King of GSoM I would delete all malicious posts except the ones by Coma. Somehow his never fail to crack me up. And it's not just 'cos he loves me so (tho' that probably helps). Maybe it's b/c he doesn't seem to take himself as seriously as a lot of the other "angry young men" on the board?...

Anyway, enjoy your vacation, Coma. Hope to see you in a week or two.

(p.s. -- JRiz, man, believe me, I would totally stay here if my career in NY didn't beckon. Tokyo is the best place on earth. When BushCheney cancels the '08 elections and declares permanent martial law, my wife and I are definitely moving back here...)

The very reason I often find it so difficult to engage in conversation here.

Also the constant vilification of someone like Hollinger simply because he doesn't fellate our beloved Warriors.

    wow
what's with all that? we just got a win!

um, i don't know how an angry homophobic rant qualifies as best post ever or not taking yourself seriously, but i guess thats between you two. as a fan i don't mind being illogical (gasp!), and I like sometimes making connections to larger issues or entertaining stuff. and discounted tickets was a nice perk. considering there's lots of other places to go not sure what there is to be angry about, unless yr just already pissed off, which is fine w/o the lame remarks.

by airport son on Nov 17, 2007 9:41 AM PST reply actions

    Um
"Best post ever" = playful hyperbole. I guess I should have spelled that out for you.

One can angrily rant and also not take oneself seriously. That's pretty much Coma's whole schtick.

Granted, the "homo" bit was totally uncalled for, but I think that was kind of a cyber-Tourette's syndrome. He's never shown himself to be unenlightened in that regard -- unlike, for example, the band of kids on this site who thought "no homo though" was an acceptable phrase for civilized discourse.

Chill out a little. If it's true that "as a fan you don't mind being illogical," why don't you extend that forbearance to Coma?

    lame factory
OZ eats idiots up for breakfast.  And his new webpin was making him seem a lot cooler than the tongue in cheek Dwight webpin (I swear, that webpin probably had something to do with all the unnecessary hate).

by sadleavy on Nov 17, 2007 11:22 AM PST reply actions

    It's because..
Whenever OZ wrote anything...Dwight just stared a hole into you from within the monitor...making even the simplest or most genuine posts seem hurtful!

OZ: "...And his rebounding actually took a hit mid-season after that injury."

Dwight: "You are lower on the food chain that I."
