Just to let you all know
Certain teams hire people to come in and work for them during this time and do nothing but fill out all star ballots. So if you see some ridiculous player on the top of the lists (Erick Dampier, Luis Scola, Jerry Stackhouse, Shane Battier etc...) you know why. And for the record, I believe that the Rockets are one of the teams that hire people. They have to with those type of numbers..

and...
The Rockets also have a guy named Yao Ming on their roster who gets a large number of votes for not only himself but also his teammates.

Dallas Bias
Jerry Stackhouse ahead of Baron Davis?
Erick Dampier ahead of Camby, Gasol, Kaman, Biedrins, Chandler, Aldridge and Okur?
Jason Terry ahead of Chris Paul, Tony Parker and Baron Davis?
I hope the voting changes; Stackhouse and Dampier shouldn't be anywhere near the All-Star game.

The categories are lame
The three real, distinguishable positions in basketball are not guard-forward-center but point guard-wing player-big man. If they realigned the categories to these, we'd avoid idiocy like Duncan trying to figure out what position he is, and Baron having to compete with Kobe and McGrady. I mean, it's hard enough to compete CP3, AI, Nash, and Deron...

There's a legitimate case to be made that Baron is the only the 3rd best point guard in the conference, but it's absurd to think that Carmelo Freaking Anthony and Dirk Freaking Nowitzki deserve to be there above him. Yes, I know it's about popularity, not "deserving," but realigning the categories would make total miscarriages of justice less likely.

What is it, 12 guys? Perfect, four per category:

  • Points: Baron, Nash, Paul, Iverson (sorry, Deron and TP)
  • Wings: Kobe, Ginobili, Marion, McGrady (screw Dirk and Carmelo)
  • Bigs: Duncan, Boozer, Amare, Camby

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 13, 2007 11:52 PM PST reply actions

Whoops
Forgot Yao. Throw him on there instead of Camby or Amare.

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 13, 2007 11:54 PM PST up reply actions

Well...
It would also make sense if teams could not hire people to vote all day, but they can (apparently).  The NBA All-Star game is an exhibition for the fans.  It is not an exhibition of the best basketball players in the league.

The NFL All Star game is an afterthought because it's after the season (nobody would be willing to risk the injury during the season).  The NHL doesn't matter anymore (did it ever).  The MLS doesn't matter yet.  And the MLB All-Star game has the same problem as the NBA: Bigger fanbase = more all stars.  I say problem because an "All-Star" game should be the best players.  If it's going to be a popularity contest, call it the "NBA Favorites", "Players from Teams with Money to Spend on Voters", or "Players with the Biggest Fanbases".  But then the NBA wouldn't make as much money.  See, it all comes down to $$$$.  If you want Baron in the game, spend some cash and convince others to spend their cash.

by Dubs fan in Boston on Dec 14, 2007 7:16 AM PST up reply actions

Agreed
The thing is, I don't want Baron in the game. I'd much rather he and his knees get a nice 4-5 day rest.

The basic point about the stupidity of the categories stands. I wonder what Tim Duncan thinks about the fact that the #1 player in the West "at his position" is Carmelo Anthony.

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 14, 2007 8:01 AM PST up reply actions

how does it work again?
Starters are voted in by the fans then the bench is voted by the Coaches or Media or both?
We're Golden!

by Krossover on Dec 14, 2007 8:17 AM PST reply actions

asdf
The coaches vote in the bench.

by Psion on Dec 14, 2007 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

ya
We shouldn't really care that much about the votes because there's no way Baron's getting voted ahead of Kobe or T-Mac. Votes decide the starting five and then it's up to the coaches. If we continue to win Baron will definitely get in; if we slow down and have a mediocre record then it's up to luck with all the great players he's competing against; and if we have a losing record then Baron has no chance.

I like JVG's idea of expanding the rosters to 15 players. Yes, there will always be debate no matter how large the rosters are, but 12 is just too small of a roster since we end up almost arbitrarily leaving players out that have very similar credentials. After the top 15 there will be a larger gap between the players that get in and the players that don't.

It's almost like the Warriors have 6 guys out there... they always have a guy open! - Jon Barry commentating game 3 last year

All-Star status
It is a popularity contest, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Identifying the best players in the league is what the "All-NBA" first and second teams are all about.

People vote to see who they want to see in the All-Star game, and that's all All-Star players should get credit for.

The connotations that go along with being an "All-Star" need to change though.  It doesn't mean you're the best, it means you're the most popular.  NBA Analysts can't say "well so-and-so was 6-time AllStar" because it doesn't mean crap, really.

i dunno about anyone else, but my ballots have almost all current and former warriors.  really, if Davis gets in that's great, but if he doesn't, at least he gets to rest his legs for a while.  I guess this falls under the whole "it's an honor just to be nominated" category.
