OT: dunleavy is at it again...

"The stuff he brings to the table," Dunleavy recently said about O'Brien, "fits well for me, for this group of players and this team. We're not just standing around and watching one or two guys play."

is dunleavy saying the warriors stand around and watch one or two guys play?  where would he get that idea anyway?

by the way, heres the link:

I am confused
Aren't we credited with being a run and gun "team"?  Is there any validity to this?  I'd like to know, it would be important to discuss it if there was.

No
........is dunleavy saying the warriors stand around and watch one or two guys play?

No he not saying that at all, read the article again. He is talking about O'Brien's coaching. No where does he bad mouth the Warriors. Thought is was a good read.

The unwritten rule is that you have to stop bashing a traded player when the next season starts. Just get over it!

You're bashing Ace Fury.
And you're bashing Dunleavy.

Not that there's anything wrong with it, just answering your question...

A dig at last years team
I kind of think Dun was referring to last years Dub's team, that is, last years Warriors team before the trade.  I feel like he said to the press once before the trade something like:"how everyone just stands around and watches J-Rich and Baron..." or something like that.

I'm glad Dun is gone.  I also think that Sleepy is crazy to compare Dun and J-rich, they are not even close to the same type of player or athlete. Bottom line, while the two of them were on the Warriors: J-rich was a leader and Dun was a loser.  J-rich stepped up when Dun left the building to sulk and cry to the press.  J-rich would shoulder the whole team if he could. Dun would kick the team in the shins when it was down.

It's one thing to make mistakes, it's another to blame the team around you for those mistakes. It's all about character.  Dun's got none. Yeah, maybe I'm too much of a dun hater... but to me, he's one of the worst draft choices we've ever made.

"Bottom line"
They're both losers, since neither led us anywhere near the promised land, and neither will do so with current teams. Fortunately, neither is with us any more.

Yeah, yeah, Dunleavy's a "whiner," JRich had "heart," whatever. Basically I agree with that assessment, though you have to figure some of that is just the superficial fact that JRich has the kind of face you love and admire, whereas Dunleavy has the kind of face you want to punch. In addition to looking like the kid in MASK...

On the court, we're about 1/5th through the season, and Dunleavy is still outperforming JRich. Wake me when JRich learns to hit his free throws, take it to the rim, initiate an offense, or play defense like Jack. Nelson put a pretty fine point on it in an interview during last year's playoff run: "JRich will never be very good at defense."

But yeah, how dare I compare us to the terrorists?

It remains curious to me the powers that be on this supposed fan blog saw fit to rip the sh*t out of Dumbleavy basically every day he when he was on the Warriors, but get their undies in a bunch anytime anyone says an unkind word about the Charlotte Bobcats' starting SG.

Anyway, worms, can, etc.

Heh
Just noticed that your boy went 0-8 with two rebounds in the first half tonight while his team got pasted 54-33 by the Bosh- and Bargnani-less Craptors.

On the bright side, he did go 2-2 from the line, so he may be edging closer to the magical 60% barrier...

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 3, 2007 5:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Update
His respectable 3-for-4 did indeed bring up to 60% FT shooting -- 60% on the nose, only slightly worse than Biedrins' 61.9%.

On the other hand, his 3-for-17 from the floor puts him at 39.8% on the season. Fortunately, his leadership, heart, and intangibles more than make up for that.

Hard to argue stats....
Sleepy, you make some really good points.  The stats are hard to argue.  I admit I was really surprised yesterday when I looked at their (J-rich and Dun's) stats side by side yesterday.  I found it hard to comprehend that they were so close in numbers right now.

That being said though, I do think there are some things that Jrich brings to the table that Dun does not.  To me when you are on a team, you have to be a team player.  Dun never seemed to me like a team player.  Case and point: you don't blame your team for your own shortcomings. Jrich is a team player.  He'll go out and sacrifice his body for the team and he never would say that they fell short, even if they had.

Jrich is also never scared to take the last second shot. Very few people are up for that challenge.  JR doesn't hesitate (for better for or for worse).  My best description of Dun is "choke".  I can't tell you how many times I yelled at my TV for Dun to pass the ball instead of shooting it (even when the game wasn't on the line).  Dude is soft and a choker.

And unlike Dun JR really does have fire and heart.  That can make a huge difference on the court.  Would you rather have someone with passion on your team or would you rather have as you've stated "the mask".  Maybe I'm crazy but I'd take someone with heart over someone who has a decent "all around game".

But really I think the reason Jrich gets so much love is because he loved the fans where as Dun did not. You never saw Dun pounding his chest or raising his arms up to hype the crowd up.  You never saw Dun taking out a full page add in the local newspaper apologizing for a bad season and promising a playoff run.  You never saw Dun throw down a 360 dunk in a game to make the arena go crazy.  People love that stuff. I know I did.

And while I realize Jrich is no MJ I also realize he is definitely no MD.jr....

I'll tip my 40 to JRich but you'll never see me lose an ounce of beer over Dun... unless I'm puking in disgust.... Sorry Sleepy but I will never concede that: MD.jr is > than or even = to JR....

Basically agree
About the personality differences. I just think it's the nature of fans to make a little too much of that stuff.

Thought I'd throw PER on the stat pile, since Hollinger just posted up-to-date numbers...

(a few other players added for context)

  1. Baron Davis 22.04
  2. Al  Harrington 18.22
  3. Mike Dunleavy 17.46
  4. Monta Ellis 17.31
----
"Average NBA player" 15.0
----
  1. Troy Murphy 14.05
  2. Jason Richardson 13.77
  3. Mickael Pietrus 13.73
  4. Kelenna Azubuike 13.10

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 4, 2007 3:29 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Update #2
Richardson aka "Mr. Clutch" gets off to a nice start v. the Bulls -- 17 points through three -- then goes 0-4 with 2 turnovers and three fouls (and of course, zero free throws) in the 4th quarter as the Bulls strom back to win.

Ah well, at least he has the confidence to keep taking those big shots...

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 5, 2007 6:36 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

On draft choices...
I agree that Dun was a pretty bad pick, though it should be said that we were picking #3 in what appeared at the time to be a two-man draft. Obviously, Amare ended up being the big prize that year: but the guys picked after Dun at 4-5-6-7-8 were Gooden, Tskitishvili, Wagner, Hilario, Wilcox -- not exactly a bunch of perennial all-stars.

Hardly our worst choice ever, when you consider we picked Joe Smith/Fuller/Foyle over Garnett/Kobe/TMac..

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 3, 2007 5:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not the worst
Notice I didn't say "the worst draft choice we ever made" but only one of the worst ones that we have made.

If you look at the draft list that year you will see that we also missed a few other players of note besides the obvious Staudamire: Nene, Tayshaun Prince, and Boozer.  Also note that we missed Matt Barnes!  We could have had good ole Matt on our team this whole time!!

I would rather have had any of these other players over Dun.

"One of the worst"
is basically meaningless. It allows you to rip the pick and then plead innocence when someone calls you on it. I could just as easily call Jason Richardson one of the worst starting two guards in the NBA -- but I won't, 'cos "one of the worst" is basically meaningless.

On Barnes: If we had drafted him at #3, he'd likely be commanding Dunleavy's salary, and wouldn't be nearly as valuable to us. Conversely, if Dun had been a second-round pick, and were making $3M, he's be a great 6th or 7th man for us. Nelson has said as much.

It was a mediocre pick, not a terrible one, and one most people at the time agreed with, given Dunleavy's potential, and the fact that Yao and Jay Williams (remember him?) were off the board. Hindsight is 20/20. At the time of the pick it wasn't quite as clear as it is now that "white + American = mediocre player."

And actually, as average as Dunleavy is, he may be a serious candidate for "best white American player in NBA." Scary thought, but really, who's that much better? Mike Miller? Kirk Hinrich?

Honestly...
Me and my boy were talking about this during the game tonight...Honestly, even if Dunleavy went out and became an all-star (which will never happen) Indy can HAVE him.  It would never work here, and I always hated him since we drafted him.  Let's stop talking about our trash past, and talk about how unstopable Stephen Jack and Al are...Also, I don't know about ya'll, but I was way more excited to get Al when the trade happened than I was to get Jack.  Turns out that Jack became the catalyst (w/ Baron) to this team's success...peace, dan

by BeLEGENDelliAllDay on Dec 2, 2007 11:15 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Um, yeah
They can HAVE him. They DO have him.

Is there a person on this site who wants him back? I think that wondrous trade may be the only subject on which GSoM is in unanimous agreement.

That said, of course it stings a little bit when he does well.

That said, his chances of becoming an all-star are pretty much nil, so no worries. As a wing-man, he's already clearly Indiana's second banana to Danny Granger.

That said, I maintain that he's about equal as a player to Jason Richardson -- maybe marginally worse, but in keeping with his marginally lower salary. Both are very nice pieces at an MLE-type salary; both are annoying albatrosses at their current deals.

That said, I'm sorry: there's no need to bring up this discussion in every thread ...

Is: if you look like Mrs. Matt Barnes, whatever you say, goes.

Sorry if implied otherwise, ma'am. Chastise me if you must.

Dumpleavy
He is good, not really good or great or bad a** or awesome, but Dumpleavy is pretty solid.  I'd love to have him back as a bench player if he were getting paid $1,000,000 a year, but that ain't gonna happen.  Dumpleavy is really easy to pick on, but he is having a good year.  I hope he does really well over there.

by gabezgsw on Dec 3, 2007 11:13 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Lots of players would be good at $1M
I just think it's funny that he left and immediately upped his FT% by 8%.  They should check the geometry of our FT line...

He is having a good year, but there's no question that I'd rather have either TMNT or CaptJack...

Dunleavy
is a tease. He'll raise your hopes about his potential with a good game but then send all those hopes crashing back down when he returns to his normal form.
The J-RICH show is on his way out...=(
