Gary Payton Idea??

"Gary's interest is only with teams he can play with and compete with to win a championship," Goodwin said.

Just read an article from the Boston Globe saying Gary Payton wants to play again and feels that he can help the Celtics, but the Celtics haven't shown the same interest. So I was thinking what if the Warriors signed him to the veteran league minimum of $1.2 million. Gary is not only a hometown native, but he was an NBA all-defensive player, and has playoff experience. I think it would be a more cost-effective way to replace Hudson, if its true he is going to done for the season. The only drawback I see to it, is that he is 39, and if he would be able to keep up playing nellie-ball. But supposedly, his agent said Payton was in good shape. Sorry the kind of unorganized post, for its my first one. But I just wondering what other people would think of the idea.

Why go to the Globe when you can read the Times?
Hey, Marcus Thompson and Geoff Lepper of the Contra Costa Times, in their new co-written blog, Inside the Warriors made the same suggestion with other alternatives:

Check it out.

would be a great fit, i think, and even if he doesn't like backing up, any true PG would love this offense. I think it's more a point of Arroyo not liking being told what to do, not so much sharing time. his numbers this year are decent, but we're just looking for someone to spell baron and play a little D.

Problem is, who do we offer in a trade? Arroyo is 4mil expiring which is good for us, but by virtue of the trade restrictions on some of the more desirable guys, it might be hard to put together an offer Orlando might like. Pietrus would be the best option we have to offer, and it saves Orlando a little money and they get an expiring contract, but he'd have to approve the move, which he might do if he was going to play more in Orlando. Hard to say though; he does bring some D and outside shooting, maybe he would back up Turkoglu, I dunno. I think this deal would work money-wise if pietrus okayed it, and like Thompson points out Orlando has three rotating PG's, they might be willing to part with Arroyo to get a guy like Pietrus. Thoughts?

My girlfriend hates that I'm into basketball again, and that I yell at the TV during games.

Orlando
Also has (at least) four rotating wing players in Turkoglu, 'Shard, Bogans, and Redick. Hard to imagine they'd have much interest in MP2. If anything, with Battie out for the year, Milicic shipped out, and that slug of backup C, I'd think they'd have more interest in Kosta, POB, or DJ Banger...

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 21, 2007 2:33 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't see the Dubs getting rid of Banger, he's basically our only other big man besides AB15. Also, I think Banger is someone who we need to keep, he's the only guy on our roster who can really bang inside and I don't think he's all that bad of a defender. Kosta is out of the equation because I doubt Orlando would be interested in his 3year/5mil deal. The only way I can see it working is if we give them POB, which they probably don't even want. Then again if they wanted to ship Arroyo out we could always use the TPE to bring him in for the rest of the season, which is logical if the front office isn't going to use it and let it just expire after this year.

Maybe if this was 1996 I'd consider signing Payton but lets be realistic, GP is 39 years old and I highly doubt he would be able to keep up with the pace at which we play. He might have been the defensive player of the year but that doesn't mean anything now, he's older and with age you slow down, I just cant anyway visualize him being effective. Also, aren't you allowed to only use the veteran minimum once in a season? If so I believe we did give it to Hudson.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Dec 21, 2007 9:50 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

veteran minimum
I don't think there is a limit to how many times you use it in a season. This year we have given to THud and Austin Croshere. The best part of a veteran minimum is the league pays half of it.

by Psion on Dec 21, 2007 10:53 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not worth it.
You can use the Vet minimum as many times as you want.

The bigger problem is that Payton probably isn't worth even the league subsidized amount at this time.  His performance over the last several years slipped steadily.  Last year it was abysmal, probably worse than Hudson was playing for us.  At 39, the chances of him reversing the decline to become even adequate is pretty low.

Unless
He has the phone # of Bonds' and Clemens' pharmacist...

Might as well ask again: does anyone know what's up with old friend Pierre Pierce? He looked great against the scrubs in Vegas. Even discounting a ton for the level of competition, he always seemed like a better PG option from THud: bigger, more physical, more of a bona fide floor general.

Given his supposed closeness to Mullin, and the demise of THud, I'm surprised his name hasn't re-emerged...

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 21, 2007 11:20 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Pierce
Pierce wasn't invited to camp, which makes me suspect that there was something behind the scenes in the summer league we aren't privy to.  As best as I can find, he's not playing for anyone anywhere.  He's not in the NBDL, and I suspect his legal status makes it difficult for him to play in some of the overseas leagues. Perhaps his legal troubles run deep enough that it was going to be difficult for him to stick with an NBA club and teams simply decided he wasn't worth the risk.

Also GP has made it known that he wants to play on a team that is going to contend for a title. Don't get me wrong but for us to win a title this year the stars would have to align in perfect formation. The Dubs aren't yet at the point where good veteran players want to come play for less money in return for a chance to win a title.

by J Rich 4 MVP on Dec 21, 2007 6:01 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Be realistic
Sure, Payton at 39 is not Payton at 29, nor even a candidate for Defensive Player of the Year or Franchise Savior.  But we're talking about a critical need to find a backup point guard nearly a third of the way into this season; it's not like we have a ton of options.  Personally, I'd wager that Payton is a better option than THud ever was.  It's fine to point out all his negatives and how he's not the player he used to be, but personally I think Payton is one of the better options I've heard.  Nobody is going to be an ideal fit, so finding our backup PG is less about getting the perfect match and more about finding someone whose strenghs and weaknesses will be enhanced and minimized by the general makeup of our team.

also, I'm not sure whether there is a rule about how many players per year can be signed to the veteran league minimum, but I definitely don't think it's one: isn't Croshere on the same contract as Hudson?

other downside
is Payton seems like a dick

by Zig on Dec 21, 2007 11:28 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

GP is cool with me
Don't confuse tenacity for "seems like a dick."  On his defense, I hung out with Payton once at Dr. Ting's (Bonds' doc) house and he is personable and funny (even to this "nobody").  I find it hard for anyone to call this guy a dick.

Payton would be a great addition.  What are our other options?  Boykins is a fun spark off the bench and gives the fans something to cheer about on a losing team.  After reading that CC Times post, I was left wondering why others aren't mentioning White Chocolate?  Miami was once allegedely interested in Pietrus, and Jason Williams is playing on a really bad team with no immediate hope for the future.  Actually, I was surprised last year when we cut Aaron Miles.

Dude
Did you even glance at the other responses in this thread?

You understand the concept of TOAST, right?

I mean, if you don't think Payton is toast, at least try to provide some evidence that he might not be (statistical or anecdotal). Otherwise your post is no different than the one lobbying for Magic Johnson, only without the humor.

As for White Chocolate, I think the consensus is that given his injury issues and drop-off in performance, he's just not worth the cost in $$ and talent, even as a pro-rated expiring contract.

Sigh. I would give my freaking left nut for Jose Calderon about now. This offseason if we're really not confident in Monta's abilities as a backup PG, I'd just as soon offer his $6-8M annual contract to Calderon. Then again, if Ford's spine stuff is at all serious, there's no way Toronto doesn't match whatever offers he gets. Jose's agent must be licking his chops...

by Sleepy Freud on Dec 22, 2007 2:32 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

HOLY CRAP
I just noticed that Jose Calderon has an assist/turnover ratio this season of 6.31.

Even if that stat isn't you're cup of tea, that's insane. The next best player in the NBA, Brevin Knight, is at 3.82.

Ah well, file under: lost cause. No way the Raps won't break the bank to re-sign him. We're better off targeting TJ Ford and rolling the dice on his spine.

Meanwhile, OZ's friend Bassy Telfair is blowing up: 27 points/11 dimes last night, 11.5/7.2 for the month of December.

Which leaves ...?

Arroyo
I wouldn't mind Arroyo at all. Sure he has his limitations, but I think he would thrive here (if anywhere). He always plays well for his country, so my plan is (if we get him) to get him a Puerto Rico jersey to wear under his Dubs jersey. =P

BTW, he has an expiring deal right? Do you think there is any chance we do pick him up for the rest of the season? I haven't had a chance to follow the Magic too closely but, while things are rolling well for them, they seem open to the idea of tweeking the roster as they see fit.

Could MP play the SG for them? I don't think they would need him to handle the ball too much.

Of course I'm not sure MP would want to go there and IIRC he can vetoe trades for a little while longer.

He is an expiring $4m (give or take) contract that matches perfectly with Pietrus' $3.5M or so. In any case, it works on realgm's trade checker.

He's a little small, but he's got a good assist rate this year for a backup, offsetting his relatively poor shooting.

Pietrus can veto any deal, but if he wants to play for Miami, Orlando is close enough, right?

They actually could use his "defense"- Bogans and Evans are a little small to matchup with bigtime SF's, Pietrus can shoot 3P somewhat which fits their theme of surrounding Howard with gunners, and he's a defensive improvement over Lewis/Turkuglu.

All speculation of course, I don't know how much they value Arroyo. They do have Dooling to slide into the backup PG spot.

A Golden state of mind Indeed.

Friday night's performance was pretty impressive

15pts 7reb 16ast 1to (16 to 1... yeah that pretty nice)

They lost to the Sonics, but those are some pretty crazy numbers he put up.

Payton is toast...
I think you are probably right here.  My intentions to post were intitally over the reaction I had over dude's "seems like a dick," comment about GP.  However, I disagree over the "consensus" of White Chocolate, and in a reduced role I feel he can be more productive for a playoff bound team like the Warriors than he currently is showing.  Williams can hit open threes (not gonna be any better and not any worse than any of the 35+ threes we take per game) and run an offense (with Miami and especially with the Grizz he showed "pass-first" instincts).  Injuries haven't affected his starts this year (might be luck, but such might be said about Baron this year also), and his decline in stats might be due to being on a crappy team.  I am not sure about salary, but I would be happy with this particular pick up.

Calderon would work; really work. Andre Miller used to be a top 3 PG in this league and, again, in a reduced role would really thrive on our team (not sure he's ready to take a reduced role yet, though).  Jeff McInnis, Steve Blake or Jarret Jack, Chris Duhon,  and Brevin Knight are either on weak teams, getting little minutes in their current situation, or are almost ready to retire and can still be serviceable as a back up.

We have money (and now space) to sign Carlos Arroyo.

If the back up PG thing doesn't happen, lets boost our rebounding and interior presence (that includes being able to catch the ball and finish unlike Didier Board Mbanger, who I do like for now for what he brings to our team) with an addition like, Dalembert, Wilcox, Haslem, Maxiell, Outlaw.

by onetwocross on Dec 23, 2007 11:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

No, not again
We should learn our lesson, if Boston is turning a guy down who's eager to play for them don't pick them up.

My concern is less about being the right fit but more about actually being fit. Guards would not have much problem playing Nellie ball cause they're more naturally agile than big man. Plus, he has a defensive mentality and leadership. But, at 39, how's his health and falling body parts? Of course Payton's agent will say he's in great shape. Any agent who says otherwise is gone in an instant. How much truth it is is what interests me.

Highly unlikely but......
Steve Blake would be a good fit. I think Portland would really have to take a nose dive though before they would trade him in the division. Plus we would have a decision to make on who to take. Not sure if Pietrus would be too high on their list.

by tangel29 on Dec 21, 2007 2:31 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Fortunately
We're not in their division.

Unfortunately, Steve Blake kind of sucks.

Assuming they like Jack and Rodriguez, they still have two PGs to spare: Taurean Green and Petteri Koponen. Taurean is too stumpy for my tastes, but Koponen is pretty intriguing. According to Dave at Blazer's Edge, Petteri has been tearing it up for the Honky Playboys.

In November, Koponen has stormed the Finnish league courts better than ever before. Notably more determined than ever, Koponen has lead the Honka Playboys to 6-0-record despite the injuries of team captain Jukka Matinen and experienced American players Monte Cummings and Timothy Kisner. Koponen has averaged 19.7 points, 4.2 assists (with 3.0 turnovers), 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 steals a game while draining .549 of his two-point shots, .464 of his treys and .818 of his free throws. Currently, Koponen is one of two leading candidates of Finnish league player of the month award.

I have an Idea
Let's sign Magic Johnson to a veteran minimum! He was arguably one of the best point guards of all time and would provide veteran leadership for our young team. The only drawback I see to it, is that he is 48, and if he would be able to keep up playing nellie-ball.

But in all seriousness, Gary Payton is just too old. He's had a successful career, but now it's over.

Payton/Barkley Video
Speaking of Payton, you've probably all seen this video but if not, here is the link. It is Payton defending Oakland and getting fans reactions to Charles Barkley's words about the Warriors and Oakland.

http://broadband.nba.com/cc/playa.php?content=video&url=http://boss.streamos.com/wmedia/nba/nbac om/tnt/nba_payton_bay_050907.asx&rss=true&siteid=rss

Payton would bring more leadership and experience to the team and good defense but he is 39 and may struggle with Nellie-ball, plus, he isn't a good free-throw shooter - only 72.9% at the line.

by zaki on Dec 22, 2007 11:11 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

I talked to Gary Payton
at the Warrior/Orlando game.  He was drinking some cocktails at the plaza club bar.  I brought up this very subject and asked if he was mulling a return to the league and if he was considering the Warriors.  He has no intentions, at least from what he told me, of returning to the NBA. He said he loved being retired and that he's not coming back.   For what it is worth, the guy is in great shape.  He is an absolute rock with no body fat.
