Melvin Ely to the Spurs on the cheap

Not saying he is a super monster. But someone the Warriors were hot on during the offseason. Is a post player and would have been nice to acquire.

He is going on the cheap. Eric Williams(an expiring contract) and 2009 2nd round selection(and if its Spurs you would think its low) and cash(I would guess 3 million) for Melvin Ely.

I would have liked to have him join the team. We really need some front court help.

No big loss
Ely has a gift for low-post scoring, but often fell short of coach Bernie Bickerstaff's expectations as a rebounder and defender.

Not meeting expectations as a rebounder or defender?  Doesn't exactly sound like the answer to our problems, unless the goal is to see if we can set the record for largest rebound deficit in a season.  We need front court help, but I don't think a scorer who hasn't been much of a rebounder for his position is going to help the team one bit.

Really...
I am not even sure Ely can beat out Jackie Butler in Spurs' doghouse.

Powell is better.

Should the Warriors be looking at other options in
other pro sports?

Maybe Randy Winn could help us in some way or fashion? Or Nick Swisher?

The Spurs apparently aren't fans of John Hollinger
Ely's got a 9.89 PER on the season, which is absolutely, horridly, dreadful, especially for a big minutes player. 82games +/- rating that they call the Roland Rating has him at -11.6, which is even more mind blowingly bad.

That said, one important thing in advanced basketball metrics, and of course basketball in general, is that different guys thrive in different systems (Boris Diaw going from Atlanta to Phoenix is one typical example) so who knows how Ely will fare with San Antonio. I agree with MightyReds though, Ely right now isn't any better than Powell

Ely
Yep, I thought it would be a good idea too; not that Melvin is some grand solution, but he can give you decent backup time, 10-20 min a night, at both the 4 & 5.  Nice player to bring off the bench is all, fills an obvious need.  Nothing crucial though.

I will say he's definitely better than Powell is right now.  Josh has potential and I'd like to see him stick around but Ely is the better overall player skillwise and he's an actual NBA 4, something the dubs don't really have.  Powell thrives on athleticism and has upside, also nice to bring off the bench, a lot cheaper than Melvin for sure.  Melvin's stats are skewed this year because of little, inconsistent use.

Lately I've been stuck on Sideshow Varejao though, as far as cheap, realistic help out on somebody's bench right now that the dubs might have an actual chance of acquiring.  The Cavs could really use a solid swingman right now, for instance.  Of course so could the Spurs.

Cheers!
