I 2ND THAT...
when the most recent design came out w/ THUNDER and the lightning bolt, i thought it was cheesy and come to think of it i still do! THUNDER's cool and all (for the kids and maybe ladies), but i'd rather have something less cartoony and more "WARRIOR"! besides, who do they get a bolt of lightning from and a mascot named THUNDER from the GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS? shouldn't our mascot be some sort of "warrior"? maybe it's just me!
anyways, i'm getting ahead of myself! but i definitely agree that we should come up w/ a better logo than we do now, but that would mean a whole new look! frankly, i don't mind at it all!
GO WARRIORS!!!

New unis (well, old unis) a MUST!
PS--If Oakland is bugged by "The City" logo, I'd settle for a late seventies update with the circle, map, and star. Hey, we won a championship in those uniforms!
PPS--Credit where credit is due. At least the current uniforms are vaguely tasteful--not nearly as horrendous as those of a few years ago, featuring the stupid, faceless "Thunder" and the lightning-bolt stripes on the pants.

Jerseys
I vote for the City jerseys at home and the golden gate orange on the road. That'll show them!

New Jersey... not the state

They'd be a lot cooler than the guys who shoot t-shirts into the air and put on chef hats and give out pizza.
What's with those guys? Not trying to be a hater, but at the Hawks game, I saw one of them give a pizza to a kid who was literally sitting court side. I know it's a little kid, but any kid sitting their probably has parents who could buy him a pizzeria.
The movie warriors should be our new logo and mascot. Check out these cool red letters. And couldn't they modify the coolest gang in the movie not named the Warriors, the baseball furies, to be the basketball furies. Crazy hoops players with painted faces. Am I living in my own fantasy land or would this be cool? Look at that kick-ass baseball fury in the poster

Yeah, I know, some movie studio owns the rights to the movie warriors and they'll never be our mascot. Hey props to atma brother on the funny names for upcoming warrior oppontents.
We'll also be playing the Milwaukee Sucks, the Toronto Craptors, the New Jersey Net Worth=$0,
the Atlanta Hacks, the New Orleans Bore-nets (maybe Snorenets>) the Houston wreck-ets?... that one kind of sucked, the Houston Back Spasms?
this is tougher than I thought

We definitely need new unis, but keep The City...
The tough part with a new logo is what is Oaktown or the East Bay known for? We had a picture of the State of California which looked like a sock, Thunder, and now the lightning bolt. We need some fresh ideas!
Finally
On the other hand, the city jersey looks great, I always like the yellow ones better than the blue ones they had.
My $.02
Oh, and on special promotional occasions, I second KCBS's motion that we draw inspiration from the "Warriors" movie. That would rule. And I'm not talking about just the red or the spray-painted typeface: I mean actually making the players dress like the characters in the movie. Monta would look rad in the red warpaint with the Yankees jersey, and maybe JRich shirtless with the beads and Saudi Arabian headgear?
If nothing else, it'd be worth it just for the rise it would get out of David "Adolf" Stern...
Much needed opposition
THOSE THROWBACKS ARE FUGLY.
I'm serious. I really find it hard to stomach the idea that someone would find this bland, amateurish "city" design attractive--it looks more suited for an underfunded high school team. Even worse is that it's yellow--are we trying to be wannabe Lakers or something? (ironically they actually look good in yellow) Honestly, I'm disappointed and disturbed not only by the news of this decision by the team, but also the positive responses by everyone here to both the retros and the horrid orange alternates.
I feel that our current logo and uniforms are the best in the league if not of all sports--I long considered it a consolation during the playoff drought that even though we're losing, we can at least look good doing so. I get depressed when I realize that our current default stylish look is destined to be associated with 12 years of no playoffs while the antiquated varsity drab will be associated with success and unity during the team's strive for this year's postseason. I strongly wish it would be the other way around.
Then again, we live in a world where the Warriors have missed the playoffs for 12 straight years despite being good enough to make it for at least half of that time, so I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by the Bizarro logic.
Apologies if I've come across as harsh (I also feel bad for using my first post on something like this), but I've been wanting to put this out there for a long time, and I hope I'm not alone in this sentiment. I'm not necessarily against throwbacks, just against boring, ugly designs--I think a better way to do the retro thing would be to bring back the early 90's uniforms, since those actually look pretty nice, especially compared anything we've had before it.
As far as needing a new logo and uniform, I feel we don't necessarily need to change anything except to get rid of the orange alternates and possibly just get rid of the orange altogether (unsightly AND the reasoning behind it is stupid--let the Bobcats have that color). If we do make a change, though, I'd like to see something that aims in between the current look and the early 90's look, something like a futuristic Run TMC style...and perhaps live up to the team name by ditching the yellow for actual gold--we could have a sort of blue, basketball counterpart to the 49ers (who knows, maybe 49er-like success can come with it).
So you're saying you love Dunleavy?
I can sort of see growing to accept the midnight blue 'n' orange 'n' thunder -- but c'mon: "best unis in all of sports"? Better than the Yankees? Dodgers? Trojans football? UT Longhorns (football & hoops)? Colts? Steelers? Boston Bruins? Detroit Red Wings? ... Or are those all "antiquated varsity drab" too?
I dunno, I guess I'm just an old fogey at heart. I also prefer the Beatles and Marvin Gaye to James Blunt and Puff Daddy -- so what do I know?
by Sleepy Freud on Feb 23, 2007 2:33 AM PST up reply actions
If I wanted to prove I wasn't an old fogey

But then, the one I have is definitely more my style.
by Sleepy Freud on Feb 23, 2007 2:49 AM PST up reply actions
Bah
As for all those teams you mentioned, yes, those definitely fall under the "antiquated drab" umbrella--very basic, very clunky, very boring and ugly. The Steelers are an exception, since their current jerseys look very nice with the semi-sharp semi-round Futura fonts, but even then they're not the best looking NFL team (the Eagles, Broncos, and Falcons come to mind first in that regard).
It doesn't seem fair to favor the old just because the new isn't "established" and "classic", a mentality that bothers me a lot as too many others have adopted it nowadays regardless of their age. Seriously, James Blunt and Puff Daddy? This is more like, say, the Carpenters and Cat Stevens (campy, folksy, and dependent on nostalgia) versus Non Phixion and Styles of Beyond (underappreciated relative unknowns who nevertheless exemplify what makes the present-day standards so great).
Or better yet, an old Ford Pinto--well intentioned for its time but has aged horribly--versus a 2007 Honda civic Si--not the fastest in the current market but too stylish to ignore and zippy enough to deserve respect.
Wow
Seriously, I almost left the Steelers off my best-dressed list precisely because of that awful Futura "font." Sport teams should not have fonts at all, let alone ones designed by artsy Bauhaus-types in the gay 1920s. The Steelers were ten times cooler with the classic numbers:

C'mon, Eagles, Broncos, and Falcons? Are you serious, or are just yanking my chain? You might as well add the Titans and Panthers to round out your "top" five.
Next you'll be telling me the Raiders need to update their crappy unis with some crescent-shaped accents of teal and gold, italic numbers, and an "aerodynamic" pirate on the helmet...
by Sleepy Freud on Feb 24, 2007 3:42 AM PST up reply actions
To be fair...
First of all, I'm sure there is some element of nostalgia involved in my fondness of it. And I do agree with Skeptic and others who have questioned the SF-ness of it. The GG Bridge should probably be the Bay Bridge, and the clackity cable car could probably be done away with altogether, or maybe replaced with a BART train. Overall, a "tasteful update," as Cheese Johnson termed it, seems in order.
Still, my essential point about freshness and fun of the original stands. What you call "middle school" I consider bold and unpretentious. I don't think the new Unis are horrible at all, but they are certainly more calculated and corporate. If I had to voice a single-word complaint I'd say they're "fussy" or "overdesigned." I mean, for example, do the numbers really need the elegant half-serifs and the double orange/yellow border? They would actually be much more readable as simple blue-on-white (or the reverse). Not saying simplicity in design is inherently better than complexity, but I dunno, this a sports uniform, not a restaurant logo. To me, sports graphics is a bit like rock 'n' roll in that by its nature, it should express boldness, balls, and soul more than sleek "sophistication."
The founder and design mentor of my old architecure/design firm used say he tried in his work to emulate Ted Williams' swing -- "to seem not to have tried too hard." To me, Thunderman with his bolts and serifs and golden gate orange and midnight blue seems to be trying just a little too hard.
To return to the music analogy: fans of Yes or Rush might find the simple chord progression and basic chops of Otis Redding's "Try a Little Tenderness" or the Beatles' "Ticket to Ride" also antiquated or high-schoolish. Yet somehow, nostalgia aside, the Beatles and Otis speak from (and to) the human heart -- at least my human heart -- in a way Rush and Yes do not.
Anyway, not really trying to convince you, just trying to restate my position without the snarky tone. Again, in matters of taste: to each his own. And you definitely did add some needed spice to what was a pretty bland "throwback love-fest." So, peace.

I'm disappointed and disturbed
I'm with you bro. I love my blue hat with the large orange "Warriors' on the front. I think people that like that retro crap are not old enough to have lived thru that era. It sucked, despite the george bushes of the world we've got it a lot better now. remember they killed guys like obama in those days. "the old ways were not working we gotta make some changes" I think it's finally gonna happen, but we can't let them drag us back.
When I look up north I see the city on the left and oaktown on the right. intellectual tourist trap versus working class town, fake versus real, soft versus hard, disdain versus respect. Do I want a jersey with "the city" and a dingly little cable car on it? Hell No!

Thank you
Though as a resident of the "left" side of the Bay I can assure you that there's plenty of culture and "realness" to be found in SF, even if the negatives you pointed out are much more prominent than on the "right" side. Perhaps a better comparison would be established but snobby versus gritty but dedicated. ;)
Skeptic, bro
I agree that in some ways race relations are better now (viz. the Obama candidacy) but then there was also a spirit of progressive change in that era that is sorely lacking in today's fractured, complacent world. I mean, look at the tragedy of New Orleans/Katrina: most of us, me included, were indignant for like five minutes before we went back to thinking about our sports teams and Britney's kids and our new i-pods. Ditto for the ongoing nightmare in Iraq .... though that's probably too big a topic for a fashion diary in a sports blog.
Oh, and on music (this directed at my friend JTriumf, not you): I can't speak to those two new groups he mentioned -- though I do like a lot of new music and will try to give them a listen. But in defense of those two retro acts he was dissing, Cat Stevens and the Carpenters: yeah, by the mid-70s they had definitely descended into pure schmaltz, but from like '69-72 they each put out a half dozen beautiful songs that will likely stand the test of time better than almost anything that's been released in the past ten years. And what's amazing is that at the time they were (deservedly) considered like the lame, third-tier James Blunts of popular music. The truly great stuff of that era -- Beatles, Who, Led Zeppelin, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, etc. etc. -- literally towers over anything out there today. I'm not talking about fame, or popularity, or nostalgia, but about basic standards of good art: passion, power, poetry, resonance, beauty.
In my humble opinion, anyway ;-) ... But maybe my whole world view will change once I've listened to Non Phixion and Styles of Beyond...

And here's strapping young Al himself modeling said unis (did we play at SF Symphony Hall back then?)

Seriously, how can anyone not think that rocks?
