Just some thoughts:
If you look at the Warriors Draft history, draft position doesn't mean a whole lot. We could draft another Joe Smith (over Rasheed Wallace, KG), Todd Fuller (over Kobe, Peja, Nash), Adonal Foyle (over TMac), Mike Dunleavy (over Amare, Caron Butler, Krstic, Drew Gooden, Chris Wilcox), or Patrick O'Bryant. Or we could trade away another Penny Hardaway or Vince Carter. Or we could draft another Monta Ellis or Gilbert Arenas in the 2nd round. So lets hope for some good scouting and smart selections when its draft time, but for now, Lets Go Warriors! Playoffs! Lets finish 18-10 like in 2005!

don't forget
in 98 we past on Dirk, and paul pierce in favor of vince carter...oh wait we traded him for who? antawn....

We also overlooked Jermaine O'neal in 96.

sad, sad times.

every single year
there will be players that get drafted behind his career value. Trust me, it's not just the Warriors. Dirk got picked 9th, so 7 other teams passed up on him as well. The guy was a 7 foot jump shooter from Germany.

right
and to build on that thought....espn does an interesting thing and has done "hindsight" drafts for the past 10 or so years...assuming that the draft is done with what we know as of today (for lottery pics only)

it goes like this:

  1. joe smith / kg
  2. todd fuller / antoine walker
  3. foyle / danny fortson
  4. carter / antawn jamison
  5. not available
  6. not available
  7. jrich / jrich
  8. dunleavy / carlos boozer
  9. pietrus / marquis daniels
  10. biedrins / anderson varejeo
  11. diogu / david lee
note that this was last updated in the summer of 06...so the list from the past two years probably have changed already based on performances this year.

anyway, still a couple of glaring oops in 95 and 02...and sure, a couple of other ones that would be better...but not as many glaring oops as it seems to us.  funny that two of them end up like they happened.

With Nellie helping us scout talent
we have a nice chance of getting someone useful.

by racsan on Feb 22, 2007 10:47 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

oh yeh
didnt pick up kobe or tmac either

by djchuckdeez on Feb 22, 2007 11:06 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

actually, they did
the todd fuller pick was probably the worst of all time.

passing up nash and kobe?  nash had just finished up a sweet NCAA tourney, and everyone was talking about kobe.

i can forgive kg...
and maybe even kobe...

but after passing on two highschoolers for a couple of duds (relatively speaking), why they passed on mcgrady for foyle is very, very suspect.

I agree with gsw4life
For those lamenting on passing up the high school players, keep in mind that back then it was difficult to gauge their talent and readiness for the league. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who would have passed on KG and such in those situations...hindsight may be 20/20, but foresight can be as blind as an NBA ref. Just look at how many teams passed on Amare in '02, or even Monta two years ago.

Then again, it's hard to excuse trading away Carter, picking Dunleavy so high, and waiting for the second round to get Arenas. Hopefully Nellie can help us out this time, as racsan has pointed out.

Also, how the hell did we get screwed in the 2000 draft? I know there was blowback from acquiring Webber, but I could've sworn we swung a similar deal with Washington when we got rid of him.

1999 draft
We traded away our rights to the 10th pick (eventually Jason Terry) for Mookie Blaylock... I know, I know!  Thank you Garry St. Jean.

2000 Draft was the last of the Chris Webber curse... and I think that the pick from Washington was also rerouted to Orlando (hense the reason why they had 3 lottery picks that year...)

as for trading Vince Carter for Antawn Jamison... I know I am in the minority when I say I don't think it was a dumb move.  Sure Carter blossomed into a great player... but that happens when you're the lone star at Toronto... with no one in front of you except for Tracy McGrady (an inconsistent player at the time who hadn't developed his game to what it is today).  He had limitless freedom under then Coach Carter and turned that situation into a dream.  I truly believe that if he were to not get traded, his game would blossom as slowly as Jamison's did, and he would not be as good as he is today.  You also have to take into effect what Jamison did do for our team.  Did you all forget the back to back 51's?  He was the first player to do so in about 2-3 decades.  Did you all forget that he was a consistent 20 and 8 guy who was basically the "J-Rich" of the team, a reliable scorer on the low post and quick to grab boards, when he devoloped his outside shot he looked as good as gold (hence the reason why he got the max $89 mil contract extention).  He was basically a casualty of the Gilbert effect.  If Gilbert had chosen to trust Cohen instead of go for the guarenteed money (which I understand... $60 mil over 6 years guarenteed from Washington or a 3 year deal at the MLE [approximately $5 mil at the time] with an option to opt out after the first year to presumably sign with the Warriors for more money... what would u take?) I think that we'd certainly be in the playoffs... just look at the line-up we'd have:
PG Arenas
SG Richardson
SF Jamison
PF Murphy
C {insert humerous quote depicting lack of center here}
which would have been a very young team... and I'd bet that we'd be able to pull more attractive free agents due to the playoff potential... but Arenas left, Mullin showed his stroke as a the "Special Assistant" at the time and pulled the Jamison/Fortson for Van Exel/Eschmeyer etc trade (to clear cap room and start over in time for his current stint as V.P.) and now he's regressed into a high scoring role player for the Wizards... averaging good numbers but not what everyone has excpected... and who could blame him?  He was traded to Dallas where he was essentially given his "ROLE PLAYER" moniker... due to the OVERWHELMING talent on the roster (I mean... Antoine Walker, Dirk, Finley, Nash, Jamison all at their peaks, and their bench... that was a DEEEP team filled with nothing but scorers and offensive minded players).  You all know where he goes from there.  (Phew... I've said my peace.  I just wanted to show appreciation for what Jamison did do for the Warriors)

2k2 Dunleavy pick... sucks ass but hey... the Warriors stayed away from HS players at the time (Monta was our first and last high school draftee) and 7 other teams passed on Amare... what I don't understand is why didn't we go after Drew Gooden... especially if Jamison was to be the SF anyways?  It woulda been a great PR move seeing how Gooden is from the Bay. Oh well... at least he isn't Jay Williams.

As for the 2k6 picks... all I have to say is we SHOULD HAVE LEON POWE IN A WARRIORS JERSEY!  Another PR bust... Oh well.. there's always trades and free agency.

I can go on about picks but you guys already know... d... uhh... DAMN!

About Dunleavy...
The below is an excerpt from "How to be a Bust for Dummies" by Sadleavy.

He was a relatively safe and "smart" pick at the time.  The national media, gm's, and scouts loved him.  In fact, the 123 of Yao, Jason Williams, and Mike Dunleavy seemed like the obvious three picks and the Warriors did what almost any other team would've done.  I remember hearing an anonymous GM say that if he had the first pick in the draft then he'd take dunleavy because he's so "talented".

So all in all, we had very high expectations for him not just because of where he fell in the draft but because everyone felt that he was a deserving #3 pick.

Buuuuuuust!

hah
hindsight is 20-20. granted no one knew the players picked after the warriors would be so good. But come on, 13 years without a true superstar? I'm not counting Gilbert since he would disregard my last sentence, anywho...I can't believe a team that has been to the lottery as consistent as the warriors has had nothing to show for it in terms of players and wins. Its terrible or lack of scouting is what it is. Horrible, horrible scouting.

Just the name Todd Fuller makes every warriors fan's neck stand on end, and face cringe up as if they bit in to a sour lemmon. thank you dubz.
