Don Nelson pretty much concedes playoffs on KNBR
I guess there was a Don Nelson show early Thursday on KNBR. He was drowning his sorrows in a bar in Philadelphia lol.
I've taken it upon myself to cite many key points in this extensive interview. I know it is a lot but trust me this interview was long and Nellie said a lot!! This is just some of the info, listen for yourselves to hear everything he said. Nellie tells it like it is and pretty much concedes defeat for the playoffs but with the right attitude. I know some angry comments may arise, but please respond to what he says thoroughly before you get crazy! Don't shoot the messenger!

Re: Trade
- The [new] guys are in a tough spot right now. We make a major trade and expect them to harness up and make like they've been through training camp, it doesn't work that way.
Re: The 3 that ended the 1st quarter in Atlanta, reports said he hounded Jackson.
- No it was Foyle, (just like Tim Roye said on KNBR live), who let that 3 go. I played him one possession and he let the guy go down and walk by him and shoot a 3, that really bothers me, I'm reluctant to play the guy the rest of the game.
Re: Road woes
- B/c we're small, terrible rebounding team, and PF isn't great rebounder. Biedrins is the only reboudner , and he's a small center.

Don Nelson
The trading of salaries in the big trade helped, but only somewhat. Here:
http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/golden_state.htm
http://www.hoopshype.com/salaries/indiana.htm
The salaries aren't that different. The Warriors save $3 million a year over the next four seasons and then $23 million in 2010/2011, which, the last time I checked, is a long time from now. The $3 million/yr. does not effect their salary cap situation. Barring Houdini-like deals, they will be over the salary cap until the 2009/2010 season regardless of whether they had made this trade or not.
It worries me that Nelson keeps stating that this trade gives them cap flexability. Like, maybe he doesn't know what he is talking about? Not a reassuring sign.

Salaries aren't that different? Uhh, yeah they are
10/11 is a long time from now, but losing the 22.5 million accounted to Dunny/Murphy that year will allow the warriors to resign Beidrins and Monta (especially if he gets a back loaded deal). So maybe it's not cap flexibility per se, but it does allow you to keep the young guys we all like so much.
In the grand scheme, I think that it's better to have someone at 10 million a year for 3 years that is in your long term plans (Al), and Jax at 7 mil for 3 years, who may not be in your plans, than it is to have two guys who were dead weight to Nellie (Murphy/Dunny) and are inked for 4 more years at 20+ Mil a year combined.

Salaries aren't different re: salary cap
The Warriors can sign Ellis/Beidren's to new contracts regardless of any of the four traded player's contracts.
I'm not sure if you understand how the salary cap works. You can sign you own players to new contracts, regardless of whether you are over the salary cap or not.
At any rate, the Warrior's will not be below the salary cap until after the 2008/2009 season, when Davis's and Foyle's contracts expire. This trade doesn't effct that.

Here are some facts
As of now, The Warriors will likely have over $20 million to play with before they hit the Luxury Tax during the 2008/2009 season (when Biedrins/Ellis would start new contracts). According to their current contracts the Warriors payroll will be $55.5 million in 2008/2009. The Luxury Tax is on a pace to be at a $78 million level by then.
So, Biedrins and Ellis's contracts won't effect the Warriors luxury tax, unless the two players have already established themselves as stars (great news!), or the Warriors have somehow added new contracts, which they can just barely do though veteran minimum and mid-level exception contracts.
The additional three million a year, would again unlikely have made any difference with either the salary cap OR luxury tax.
You can like the trade for other reasons, which I do, but to like it for salary cap and luxury tax reasons is just plain goofy. But you're in good company. Nelson and most of the journalists (who just haven't researched the evidence) agree with you.
