Kings to allow Artest back on team

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Five days after his arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, Ron Artest said he'd stumbled as a father and husband -- and the Sacramento Kings announced they would let the volatile player return to the team.

At the hastily called news conference to announce Artest would play Sunday against the Denver Nuggets, Artest promised to begin volunteering with domestic violence groups in Sacramento and said he would work to repair his personal life.

Damn, i wish they would let him skip the Nuggets game on Sunday first.  I was hoping Sactown would drop games into oblivion without Artest in their line-up.

no
We don't really need to leapfrog Denver to make the playoffs.  It would be better for us if Sactown loses and it would have been even better if Artest was done for the season like everyone thought.

pretty funny
that when this all broke out everybody was like, good for the kings!!!! they are standing there ground. taking zero tolerance. finally a team steps up and says enough is enough by suspending him indefinately. yeah right, you knew they were not gonna do that. it all sounded good till they realized how bad they are without him. ughhh, on second thought he has learned his lesson, bad ronnie. k you can come back now. sorry sac-town if you think it's gonna make a difference your crazy. they are going on a long eastern road swing, and i'm positive that basketball karma will bite them in the ass!!!!

haha
sac realized they need have a better chance of making the playoffs if they have Artest, so they basically said, we know you're a wife beating mentally unsound guy who doesn't feed your dog, but we welcome you back with open arms. I guarantee you in a week no one will even remember it. Way to stick to your guns Kings

He's a player, not a president or a preacher. Ronron's personal problems should not be anyone's business except his own. I don't care what the players do on their own time, I watch them for the games not morality lessons.

Thanks, Skeptic
I watch them for the games not morality lessons.

Word -- especially when said "morality lessons" are delivered by his rival team's fans. I wonder how different the tone of this thread would be if Artest were a Warrior rather than a King? Fanboyism and morality lessons are a lame combination.

If Artest on were our guy, we'd all be saying stuff like "Aw, it's good that he's genuinely sorry and he's taking steps to improve" and "Thank GOD his NBA career wasn't destroyed because of it." It's kinda sad that our tone is so different just 'cos of the color of his uniform. He is a human being, after all, not just a purple-clad obstacle to our playoff run.

Personally, I've always kind of liked Artest; and I'd rather make the playoffs by kicking ass (as we seem to be doing these last three games) than simply by sucking less than our competitors.

Anyway, end rant. Meanwhile: Kings lose!!!! Woo-hoo!!!!

You can't beat Ron Artest! ... just his wife
Check out this 911 transcript:

Operator: 911 Emergency

Mrs. Artest: Hello? Help me, my husband is freakin' nuts. His team is currently on a hot streak and a has a real chance of making the playoffs and I think he's going to jeopardize it by beating the crap out of me with our daughter in the house..

Operator: Is your husband being violent ma'am? Has he hit you?

Mrs. Artest: He threw me to the ground. He tried to prevent me from calling you earlier. I didn't think life in Sacramento would be like this.

Operator: That is surprising ma'am. Mrs. Christie never ever called with any calls like this about Doug. What's your husband's name ma'am?

Mrs. Artest: Ronald Artest

Operator: Oh my GOD!!! GET OUT OF THE HOUSE!!! SQUAD CARS ARE ON THE WAY. Ma'am, I do not want to panic you, but judging by your husband's recent haircut, it's obvious that he has lost his sanity and could snap at any minute.

Mrs. Artest: He's been this way ever since the government took our starving dog away

Operator: What ever you do Ma'am, do NOT throw a beer bottle at him... it will send him into a murderous killing spree. Ok, here's what you do... try to convince him that after he gets let go from the Kings and no other team will touch him, that he still has hope as an aspiring rapper. Pretend that the album he participated in while suspended from the Pacers was better than both Allen Iverson and Shaq's attempts at rapping, and that he is the best rapper in the NBA

not true
if he were a warrior he would be disgracing the uniform and the orginization. i don't need to be paying my hard earned money so he can go home to his huge mansion and starve his dogs and slap his wife. doesn't mean i don't want him to get things turned around so he can just ball. if they really valued him and his skills, let him practice make him get some help and let him get back on the court when he is straight. thats what most regular jobs would do. paid leave of absence, seek help and welcome you back when you are fixed up, well that or some ruthless places would just make up some exscuse and can your ass.

by ruderu22 on Mar 11, 2007 4:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If Artest did a "regular" job
None of this stuff would even be public. I'm sure 50% of our coworkers have done as bad or worse. I don't doubt that the guy's a little (or a lot) sick in the head; and yeah, part of the deal with being a star is that you have to live your life under a constant microscope. But that doesn't mean we as fans need to go passing judgment on the moral character of someone we don't know.

And you may say otherwise, but I'm betting the tone around here would be a lot different if Artest were a true Warrior rather than just a "Tru Warier." I mean, do we want him canned 'cos he deserves it, in a moral sense, or because it helps out the Warriors in the standings? Seems like this thread is implying both, and you really can't have it both ways.

"so he can go home to his huge mansion and starve his dogs and slap his wife"

Why didn't the bitch feed the dogs while ronron made the money? maybe that's why he slapped her?

i'm just saying
what about sticking to your guns??? i'm not judging him, i'm not saying he is a bad dude, clearly he has issues. i just think it's riduculous for the kings to take a tough stand at the beginning of the week and then soften after five days. why??? so they have a better shot of making a playoff run. indefinetly and five days are two different things. the warriors chances of getting into the playoffs or not do not just hinge on artest playing. they got alot more ahead of them than that if they really wanna make a run. as a kings fan i would have to wonder what other things are that organization gonna go back on if it means they will benefit? they say they wanna keep the team in sac but do they? it's just shady on the teams part. if your gonna man up then do it, otherwise just say in the best interest of ron artest and of this orginization he will reamain a part of this team until the investigation is over, because we believe everyone should be considered innocent until proven guilty.

They probably came to their senses and fugured out it is a personal matter and none of their business! They have a contract for his basketball skills but they didn't buy the rights to his life or to control his relationship with his wife! If he's guilty of a criminal offense the courts will deal with the problem.

does anybody remember
anyone remember a few years back when jrich was suspended at the beginning of the season for domestic violence towards his girlfriend?

by jam3rz on Mar 12, 2007 1:21 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Heathen!!!
But, yeah, great example of what I'm talking about. Didn't mean to single you out, R22 -- I think we all as sports fans sometimes blur the line between reflexive fanboyism (Kobe's a rapist! Artest's a criminal! Booooo!) and rational judgment. Just saying that it's good to notice when we're doing it.

As for JRich: I actually don't remember that story; and I'm going to invoke my right as a fanboy to ignore it. La la la la la la, I can't hear you...

Howdy, it's me from Sactown Royalty.
I can't and don't represent all opinions over at STR or in the King's region about Ron but you can check out what people say for yourselves starting on March 5th. STR Personally, yes, I was surprised he is back and no, I don't accept his behavior or that of his wife. They need serious help as a couple and as parents. Please don't lay the organization's response to one player on the whole team. Kevin Martin got Player of the Week on the day Ron was arrested so there is more to the group than one nutty guy. At last glance, all of the Warriors are not on the perfect citizen list either but you as fans, your community or your whole team is not judged by a guy or two you cheer for on the court acting like idiots off the court.

In response to some of your thoughts:

The team has more wins than losses in games that Ron has missed. Are we better without him? The jury is obviously out on that one. Defensively he is great, but he can kill offensive flow just by being in the building. It is boggling how we played hard and looked great playing (and losing to) Dallas without Ron, and then we looked like a mess against Denver with Ron. Drives me crazy. Reinstate him just to make the Playoffs? Please. What do making the Playoffs offer when you won't last one round? Really, nothing more than being able to say we did it a ninth consecutive time - and lost again.

Every fan knows the people in their own organization better than others. ABC's announcers had our game yesterday and couldn't get two facts straight in a row so I can see how the rest of the planet is confused. The Kings never enstated "zero tollerance" on the issue. They excused (not suspended) Ron and spent a few long days speaking with attorneys getting the facts and a plan together to help Ron rehab and get right with his family. Family first...basketball second. They never said they were going to do more than take some time to evaluate the situation and no NBA player has ever been excused for more than 4 games for the same problem as Ron's. As unhappy as I am about whatever transpired in the Artest home with a child present, I have to agree with the team's decision and their efforts here.

I was at ARCO on Saturday and sat only feet from Ron, Geoff and Gavin Maloof when they spoke to fans about Ron and other issues at a season ticket holder party. If someone in your community, even a guy famous like Ron, blows it the neighborly thing to do for the betterment of the community is to not turn your back and to try to help solve the problem. To say the community only turns an eye to see Ron play is just silly. There are kids involved and we want him and all people with violence in their lives to stop. Even Geoff Petrie's wife is a volunteer for WEAVE. I agree with Skeptic that it is a personal and legal matter, to a point. Teams are families and you don't let someone in your family who looks to you for help hanging.

Do I have to wear Ron's jersey or cheer for him? Absolutely not. Do I support my team and am I proud of how they are committed to helping players and their families in a crisis? You bet.
