andris biedrins

i was watchin mavs warrior game...a.k.a THE ROUT and i noticed andris' great awareness when he's near or under the basket, he makes all the right moves and can score without even lookin at the basket sometimes. i think if he continues to develop a consistant offensive game, he could be a scary matchup for many 4 or 5's...what do y'all think?

yup
Yeah that's obviously the next step in his development--to develop a more well-rounded offensive arsenal.  Right now he's succeeding mostly on raw talent and instinct.  Given his youth, he's really got a bright future ahead of him.

ya
he has great instincts...it seems like he knows where the defensive players are at and what they're going to do

vision, reactions, soft hands and quick feet
are all things Andris has already, more so than many of the touted bigs in the upcoming draft.  He catches passes in thick traffic and takes the ball up decisively--not with muscle, but with foreknowledge of his path to the basket, which in his case is often a path to the glass.  How effective that glass is when you're seven feet tall, and how sad that more bigs don't work it to similar advantage! Tim Duncan is the most famous exception.

Although some observers held his limited shots against him in the past two years, Andris's shot selection has always been good: he limited himself to tips, flips, and dunks because he knew he could make those and that he couldn't make other shots...so he didn't take those other shots and commit what often amounts to a turnover (a missed shot rebounded by the other team).  Now he's got more catch-and-finish options, but everything is still a version of flip, tip, and dunk.  Nothing wrong with that! Even if he never develops a hook or a set shot, he still can score 12 to 15 a night and shoot well over 50% and that is worth investing in for a long time.

but my god
could you imagine if he developed

a)a jumpshot, not a big one but just a little ten footer with consistency

or b) a larger array of post moves rather then just outrun you defender

right now his greatest strength is moving without the ball, but if he developed some moves to become a go to scorer on the block he could be scary. i already think theres some untapped court vision that could be usued to run the team through him in the post. you gotta remember hes only 20

re
Just from his free throw form, I struggle to see how he could ever develop a consistent jumper. No problem with that, if he develops great post moves, like you say. He has such good touch around the basket he could be scary with some post moves.

he's still young
there are only a few young centers with as much potential as AB. I think he's only going to get better from here on out. Just the difference in his game from last year to this year is amazing. His offensive game is still raw it seems like he improves every game. I think a big part of his development has been BD's ability to get him the ball around the basket where he's comfortable, when BD was out it seemed like AB wasn't as comfortable has he normally was. With that said, he just needs to work on his post moves and hopefully he'll start getting the respect around the league he deserves, he still leads the NBA in fouls, even though it seems like a lot of the fouls called on him are touch fouls that shouldn't be called. His potential is unlimited.

as far as...
post moves are concerned he has that basic drop-step down to where it can be somewhat effective. and he has a spin move thats really quick. but i have seen dris' take like a 5-6 foot hook or like a tuck-and-up kind of move during this season. but man its almost scary to think down 2 or three years from now what he could become.

Jeez...
imagine him in Yao's body before he got injured.  Not too big, yet still quick enough to out run your opponent.  Don't even get started if he develops a mid-range jumpshot... WOW!

You don't want him to develop a jumper
Seriously, on this team, you don't want him to. Keep him on the low block and keep his efficiency up. If anything, it'd be great if he developed stronger moves that draw fouls on the opposing center.

Absolutely
Asking Biendris to develop some lame outside game would instantenously lower his value to us.  He's already got a top shooting percentage in the league.  Don't ever change AB (except your hideous free throw stroke).

I think...
developing a consistent short range J would be great for the team as a whole.  He could conceivably draw out some of the good shotblockers and open up the lane for penetration, dishes, etc.  I don't think anyone is saying he could make it a regular part of what he shows out there, but it would definitely be useful in certain matchups.

And...
...his body will still fill out.  A little more mass and strength will allow him to absorb contact better during his offensive move and also allow him to body up defenders that are stronger than him.

Remember when Murphy dedicated himself to adding muscle during the off-season to help with his game? I can see Beidrins going thru and similar program and coming back next season with a transformed body.  The Warriors strength coach was the one that helped Murph with that program after all, so the personnel is already built-in!

So much potential.  Sky's the limit.  I see the force is strong with this one.

aside from the already noticeable
talent, he is VERY VERY young. It often takes big men years to develop, and I can just drool when I think about how Andris is going to develop in the next couple years. Like MikeJ said, great vision, great reaction, soft hands, quick feet, these are all qualities you would want a big man to have, and Andris has these! And to think, he is only 20 years old!!!! He knows his limits and doesnt try to play outside of them, he knows how to position himself to allow for easy baskets as well. Just incredible. Franchises dream about being about to draft a big man like Andris. I just regurgitated everything that has been said already =X

I just cant get over the fact that hes only 20. It will truly be a delight to see him play in his prime.

about AB
i can say just 1 thing -let him play (hes got it) -give him a good coach (now hes got it too) and he will show the unexpected things (maybe even the 3pointers)

i saw him when he cames out on the feeld in Riga (city where he cames from -Latvia capital) -he was playin in Skonto team 15 year old -hes opponents was sometimes 2 times older then he
-first half season i was thinking like WHAT THIS SKINY GUY IS DOING IN THIS TEAM? -but other half was like WOW -he became a leader

-in hes second season (16/17 years old!) he became a real local star

he gotta realy good skillz and preaty much brain

I M REALY GLAD THAT AB & NELLY MET EACH OTHER

that's awesome
that you got to watch AB as a youngster. But did you just say he could develop a 3point shot?

yesss
i have seen how he did a couple of 3pointers
-and i don't see a reason why he can't try to have a good shoot from a distance (now he have a good FT)
-by my opinion -this will be the next job what he will do in summer -praktice the distance shots
-he can't be just a big guy around the basket -he have too much skillz -he is F more then C I think

-the next thing what AB must do till begining of next season is to make hes play more unpredictable -the shot from distance is a good way -this will be a much more harder to play against him

ANYONE ELSE NOTICE...
the JAX and AB connection?  I've seen JAX throw some no-look zips to AB, w/ AB snagging them and laying them up!

I LOVE IT!!!
