can someone explain to me...

john hollinger's power rankings? as we all know the warriors have shocked the mavs and the pistons recently, and they also have solid wins over the nuggets and the clippers. sounds pretty good right? so where does mr. hollinger rank the warriors? try #22. oh, and it gets better. let's take a look at some teams above them shall we? we see the kings at #14, the sonics at #16, the hornets at #17, and the blazers at #21. if it wasn't official before, it is now. this guy is a full-fledged IDIOT!

here's the full list: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/powerranking

I tried
to figure out his rankings myself but when it comes down to it they're garbage, he has the spurs ranked over the mavs and suns, that alone makes them retarded. None of his rankings make sense. I don't know why espn.com still has them up.

Well if you take a look at the NBA power rankings
They have the Warriors around 18... with the Hornets and T-Wolves ahead of them... It's f'ing ridiculous!

Fvck Hollinger
He probably hasn't looked up from his Excel spreadsheet long enough to see that right now, with the middle-tier competition dropping like flies, and even the Lakers and Utah playing like crap, the Warriors might be the 5th or 6th best team in the Western conference .. and possibly the 9th or 10th best in the NBA.

Unfortunately, the only real way to make clowns like Hollinger and Chad Ford shut up and take notice is to (a) make the playoffs; and (b) make a little noise once we get there.

I was just thinking the same thing...
Those power rankings are wiggity-wack y'all. Most indubitably. I disagree with over half of it...

I like Marc Stein's rankings... although this season, it seemed like the Warriors would always manage to lose on Sunday to leave a sour taste in Stein's mouth Monday...

Screw dem Rankings. Warriors are numbah' one in my book. Watch out Mavs

Maybe the reason I watch
so many games with the sound off or head phones on stems from this.

He doesn't put any personal opinion into those.
It is all a crazy complex formula. I would say it is time to drop the formula.

I am a John Hollinger supporter
His rankings heavily base recent performance, which means our 6 game losing streak hurt our ranking. Margin of victory is also extremely important in his rankings. Obviously the recent blowouts will help. His formula is based on years of research, I think the guy knows what he's talking about. His reason for rating margin of victory so heavily is that close games are pretty random who wins and are not a good predictor of future success. Margin of victory, however, is a greater predictor of future success. The Spurs have a slightly higher margin of victory and have played more road games, so they're ranked higher. Basically the Mavs' record is only so much better than the Spurs is that they've done better in the close games.

Actually...
The Warriors have been ranked in the 20s since Hollinger started these rankings earlier in the season, long before the losing streak. You'd actually think that the 5 out of 6 wins recently would have helped, but.. no. I think there might be some interesting, and possibly very useful, statistical data coming out of his rankings, but that doesn't mean they accurately reflect, in any way shape or form, what's really going on around the NBA. Can anyone really, truly, claim that the Knicks, Sonics, and Blazers are better teams than the Warriors? Anybody that watches NBA games would laugh in your face if you told them that. I agree, Marc Stein usually has it about right--definitely respect his rankings and I think ESPN should hype them more than Hollinger's statistical mumbo-jumbo.

I thought the Warriors were in the high teens
They got blown out in 5 straight games. This will greatly hurt them because Hollinger's formula places high importance on recent margin of victory. So they would have fallen more than 22 if they were already in the 20's. Even if you're right, it's just because the Warriors margin of victory was so bad before our recent blowouts. And the way we were playing before BD came back, no one would argue with us being ranked below the Knicks, Sonics, or Blazers.

John Hollinger
I sent him an email to him saying that he doesn't deserve any credibility at all. I said that he should actually watch Warriors games, or at least see what they have done recently. I basically bashed him and said that I didn't understand the logic of his rankings.

by illmaticwarrior on Mar 17, 2007 12:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

his rankings are completely based on his formula
him watching Warriors games makes absolutely no difference. His formula is based on years of data, but just the fact that it's a formula has its disadvantages. Obviously the Warriors are a totally different team with BD than the team that lost 6 games in a row recently, but there's no way for the formula to reflect that. But still, overall, his rankings are a good predictor of future success. I'd understand if people find this too mathematical, the "historical win %" that everyone hates had this problem

any asshole
can go buy "formula" and "numbers."  I thought the "experts" would be able to do better.

Just another....
example of the national media hatin' on the dubs like they always do. If anyone was payin attention to their recent success they would know they will be dangerous WHEN (not if) we get to the playoffs. Go warriors!!

and
i also have for a long time wondered what those idiots were thinking when making rankings. Numbers aint everything, watch a game!

We're up to 19
after yesterday's game. Look, he's not "hating" on us anymore!

yeah bro
i was looking at some power rankings the other day....we were like 20th.  complete bullshit.  we're 5-1 in our last 6.  killing playoff teams.  5-0 w/ BD.  we have the 8th spot, so we should be ATLEAST top 16.  god damn.  watch in like a week we'll be top ten.  i have a feeling that all those assholes do is look at a team's over all record and their record in the last ten games.  so called "experts"
