Around SBN: In Crunch Time, Spurs Don't Change Their Game

OPEN THREAD: Game #69: Warriors @ Jazz

428243629_130331e235_o

Warriors (W-L): 32-36

Jazz (W-L): 43-23

Time: 6:00PM PST tip off

WHEW!

Let's keep this party rolling! Tonight we look to stretch our 3 game win streak to 4 as we face off against the Jazz in Utah. With the regular season coming to an end, our boys are in a dogfight with a handful of teams for that coveted 8 spot.

EVERY. GAME. COUNTS.

That being said, we certainly have some obstacles ahead of us. Our next games after this? The Wizards, The Lakers, The Spurs, The Suns, and a partridge in a pear tree. We're going to have to take this one game at a time.

We all know that this Jazz team is no laughing matter. Sitting atop of their division and comfortably in the playoff race; not only are they are not only a problem for us tonight; if we have things our way they'll be a problem for us later.

It's time for our talent to shine. Tonight, along with the next few games should set the stage for how we are going to close this regular season out. Who knows, we may end a certain drought along the way...

Vegas Odds: Utah by 7. Honestly, I see where they are coming from. We're in Utah's house (actually temple), and they are coming back from a long and disappointing road trip. But I think Vegas is underestimating our hunger.

Big picture? We need this game WAY more than the Jazz. And as long as our squad realizes that, I smell an upset tonight.

GSoM Prediction: A very hungry Warriors by 4.

Make sure to drop your vote for who you think will win in the Comments. If you're watching or listening near a computer, post any comments you have during the game right here.

LET'S DO THIS WARRIORS!!!

Warriors by 1
It's going to come down to how much Windex the Warriors bring to Utah. If they get dominated on the boards, it's going to be a long, long night.

Maybe Nellie can try that 1-2-2 zone again. It stunned and confused the Jazz big time earlier in the season. Jax at the top of the zone with his crazy length and smarts could be just the trick to collect the W tonight.

jazz by 18. warriors get within 7 at one point, but then mehmet okur drains a 3, then pietrus turns the ball over at the other side, and harpring hits an easy J to ice it for good.

most important game of the season
I would just like to comment upon how how you always dub every game "THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME OF THE SEASON" in bold letters for every preview, and then after the warriors pull out a clutch win, you say "lets not get carried away, the next game is the most important game of the season."

I'll have to wait for an Eminem tour called "Not being re-re-re-retarded" or something before I can make a nice snappy comeback though, I guess.

by chug2k on Mar 20, 2007 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions

every game is
the most important game of the season. Especially if you're on a certain team called the Warriors and you've never been this close to the playoffs for 12 years.

superlative
most    * used to form the superlative; "the king cobra is the most dangerous snake"

yep, the word "most" is still a superlative. For a second there I thought the rules of English changed overnight, but it looks like it's still safe to call this the MOST retarded thing I've ever heard.

Sarcasm
is lost on repressed, Utah-lovin' fan boys.  Reveal thyself as a simpleton, and expect the backlash.  That said, I don't think the Dubs win this one without Sjax at full strength.  Ellis may be the key as the Jazz will have a tough time keeping up with him slashing to the rim.

j rich dribbles between the legs and bounces the ball off boozer's face to get the ball back behind the 3-pt line and then drains a 3 to win the game.

btw, anybody have that clip? i couldn't find it on youtube or else i would've linked it. i think nba street stole it as a gamebreaker after j rich pulled it off.

I so forgot about that. That was so funny, Boozer got so pissed about that. I would love to see that again.

Apparently Utah has been stuggling shooting
from the outside in this recent skid. Our zone could really force problems as it did earlier this year.

Tonight we show what this Warrior team is really made of. Let's flip those Vegas odds: Warriors by 7.

by racsan on Mar 20, 2007 2:39 PM PDT reply actions

the win tonight
will finally start to stir up some talk of the warriors on a national level as we 1) continue a winning streak, 2) with a road win, and 3) against the Jazz no less, a team that is considered among the best of them. People thought the Mavs win was a fluke, but tonight we show em we are here to stay!

Hopefull
We can steal one but this isn't one we're expecting to win. Oh and this one ISN'T the biggest game of the season, Utah's well in the playoffs. They aren't competing with us for the 8th spot so it's not a double whammy if we lose. A single whammy does suck enough though.

You'll be back.

by WHYarenasWHY on Mar 20, 2007 3:45 PM PDT reply actions

I won't gamble
This IS the most important game of the season (until the Wizards on Friday).

I'm just happy that we're still talking playoffs. I've been a DIE-hard Warrior fan since Sleepy Floyd's 29 pts in the 4th quarter, yet I've honestly given up on this time at least twice this year. I agree with most of you, a win tonight will give them team seriosu confidence going into the playoff push. A loss tonight won't do any damage to our overall playoff hopes. The real important games are the ones against the elite at HOME. If we win today, that would be gravy. Having said that, I'd love to take this one.

Hey Utah fan, still having nightmares about 1987 and 1989 first round playoffs disappointments? Karl tried to elbow Bol out of Salt Lake but Manute's swats got in the way each and every time.

Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

by Manute4Three on Mar 20, 2007 3:49 PM PDT reply actions

remember the brawl
in the 87 playoffs against the Jizz? I believe Chris Mullin was involved heavily in that fight.

by MANUTEs BOLs on Mar 20, 2007 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

the brawl
I never saw it, but I heard about it. It was in game 2 and wasn't it started by Karl Malone. The best thing about that brawl is that it lit a fuse under the Warriors and they were able to come back from 0-2 down to shock the Jazz.

Thw W's have won 6 straight playoff games against th Jazz. Hopefully, we do meet them in the playoffs????

Where the !@#$ are you now, Billy Owens????

by Manute4Three on Mar 20, 2007 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I believe Malone started it
although I remember Thurl Bailey and something Griffith (Griffin) being in the middle of it as well. It ticked the heck out of George Karl.

I really can't remember how it started...but it would be nice to face them again in the playoffs...

KARL WHO?
I'll admit KARL MALONE was the proto-typical power forward of those days!  Big and had a low post game, but he is definitely not the greatest, if not even one of the best, NBA players out there!

If you watched KARL's game as much as I did when JORDAN and the BULLS ripped their hearts out in the finals, you would have noticed how he shifted his pivot feet all the time!  He never got called for it, but it was pretty obvious.  One other move he did great was catch a pass around the free-throw line, while taking 2 steps w/o dribbling the ball.  Now that takes skill to travel the same way all the time!

Anyways, I just "loooooooved" KARL MALONE, so I must apologize for my outburst!

The W's will match up great against the JAZZ.  BARON and MONTA will shut down DERON.  BIEDRINS and AK47 are a squash!  HARRINGTON out rebounds BOOZER.  JAX covers OKHUR in deep range, and goes deep on him on the other end!

WARRIORS BY A GAZZILLION!!!

Okay, W's only by 25: 103-78!

GO WARRIORS!!!

Golden State by 3...
I truly think that the key is shutting down Boozer... and lately the W's have been shutting down the opposing team's big man (Elton Brand, Nene, KG) so if we can keep it up, we should be able to come up with the win.  Just keep your eye on Harpring... he should be able to have wide open looks since the swarming D will be revolving around Boozer.  Let's GO!

i know the refs are mostly to blame on this one
but why did the warriors not foul with 30 seconds left? they didnt even give themselves a chance...worst case scenario they are down 6 after 2 free throws with a little under 30 secs left.. very possibly down only 5. it wasnt event like they tried to get a steal..i was disgusted at that part just because they never got on their end of the court for some desperation threes. damnit.

Dude the refs made some bad calls
but the Warriros going cold and being unable to stop Utah in the second half are mostly to blame

by Zig on Mar 20, 2007 8:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Refs went on a power trip in the 4th...
Both teams got some bad calls, but I just dont think a game should be won just on the free throw line like that.  When you decide to start calling ticky tack falls to decide games thats where the line is crossed.

That kind of offiating is just the thing to stop the Warriors.  Grind the game to a screetching halt.  Great for Utah though.

Sigh.  Rough 4th to sit through.  This just means we have GOT to come out and rock the Wiz at home.  The playoffs are looking a whole lot farther away now.  Funny how one game can do that.  Lol or maybe im just down becuase of the loss.

ugh
. . . . . . . .. . .

Watching that last 3 minutes made me sick. I want to punch a Harpring. . .and a ref.

Maybe I'll find some city league game tomorrow, any sport, and just heckle the refs just to take out my frustration for this game.

by mojo X on Mar 20, 2007 8:34 PM PDT reply actions

man... what's up with the refs???
If the refs made just TWO correct calls this game would've gone into overtime. The Harrington (not) travel and Biedrins' dish to Barnes.

'grats refs.
You just screwed us over... AGAIN <^>

by MVP @ Golden State Of Mind on Mar 20, 2007 8:35 PM PDT reply actions

Refs or not the
Warriors only win when they hit their 3's

They can't get any easy shots and went cold from outside

by Zig on Mar 20, 2007 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

now what
w's 32 37
clips 31 36

whos 8th?

by VonteegoCummings on Mar 20, 2007 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

pct pts
We're back where we were a couple nights ago by being in the 8th spot only by percentage points. Scary.

by mojo X on Mar 20, 2007 8:38 PM PDT up reply actions

man
What makes it worse is that our 8-spot competition came out on top today. Now we're barely ahead of LAC again with the Hornets right behind.

ugh
baron was getting crushed all night and then monta barely touches williams and gets a call that basically seals the game. the refs are so unbelieveably bad. how do teams constantly shoot twice as many free throws as us? it's not that they aren't being aggresive enough. i hope the warriors do make the playoffs just so they might actually get some decent refs once in a while

by AJC3317 on Mar 20, 2007 8:39 PM PDT reply actions

Ever notice that the Warriors
either run or shoot 3's?

I think that is mostly your answer

by Zig on Mar 20, 2007 8:41 PM PDT up reply actions

yes we do
but if u saw the game u would know that baron/jackson/biedrins were all constantly getting bumped and hacked with no calls. i'm not saying we should shoot more free throws than our opponents, i'm just saying it should be closer than them shooting twice as many

by AJC3317 on Mar 20, 2007 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions

I did watcdh the game as I watch them
all

The Warriors for the most part run and shoot 3s

This is a big reason why they don't get to the line

Don't get me wrong there were bad calls in this game but still they lost the game with their shooting in the second half and not being able to stop the Jazz

by Zig on Mar 20, 2007 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions

ITS NOT ALL THE REFS' FAULT
we're not a "deep" team.  only 6 points and 7 turnovers from the goddang bench.  curse the bench!

you ain't lyin'!
Every team that faces the Clippers, Hornets, Nuggets...hell, ANY West Coast team has a got a part-time fan in me. I can't tell you how many times I've rooted for those teams this season.

This loss is almost as disgusting as the Wizards game.

Well, maybe not that bad, but I still feel sick about it.

by mojo X on Mar 20, 2007 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions

monta
he just had way too many turn overs off the bench. I love most of the things he does but he is just still way too careless with the ball.

by dandydaniel on Mar 20, 2007 8:46 PM PDT reply actions

Welcome aboard monta magic
This game hurts, especially since we dominated the Jazz for much of the game, until we went completely cold in the 4th quarter. Sure there were a lot of calls that were questionable but when it comes down to it the reason we lost the game is because we had absolutely nothing from our bench. Six points in all and only 4 by Monta, 13 off his season average. If Barnes, MP2 or Ellis have just a decent game the dubs probably would have come away with the win but instead we're left thinking "what if." Gotta give props to the starters though, they kept us in it for much of the game but I think they just ran out of gas late and you couldn't expect them to keep shooting it the way they did in the first half. All in all the starters played great and gave a ton of effort. Friday night against the Wiz at the Oracle we need to come up big and keep winning at home.

Why did the refs decide to slow down the game
in the 4th? They called a foul every 30 seconds; how are we supposed to get out and run?
