So far there have been numerous diaries and posts about why the warriors should tank this season in order to get a better draft pick. I'm here to post the reasons why this is not a smart idea.
First off, if we were to tank, we'll still have a hard time getting worse than Boston and Memphis. They have the 1 and 2 worst seeds locked the same way Dallas and Phonix have the top 2 locked. Then, there are still a lot of other teams we have to fight for bad positions with. In the end, we end up with a 5-15% (at best, probably) chance of getting the a top 2 pick.
Secondly, there is a lot of talk and speculation that Greg Oden will stay in school another year. He's enjoying college and honing his skills, and many people from Ohio State have said that he will likely not come out this year. If he stays in school, then we have to get the #1 pick just to get a "future star" in Kevin Durant.
Third, suppose we don't get the 1st of second pick? Then what? Who's left? Joakim Noah? Tyler Hansborough? Alando Tucker? These guys are good at the college level, but I highly doubt they will be stars in the pros, at least not for many years. If former drafts have been any indication, a 10-20 pick usually ends up being a better player, and a better team player, than a 4-10 pick. Plus, they are a lot cheaper.
We still have a decent shot at the playoffs, and tonight should be the first game with our starting 5 intact. If we win today, we have 4 of the next 5 games at home. A rejuvenated Dubs team could go 4-1 or maybe even 5-0 during that time, and be right back in it.
Basically what i'm saying, is why tank? we have a very bad shot at getting a top 2 pick, and if we do, Oden might not even be there. And if not, then we just tanked a season for no reason when we can go all out and make a run for this.
GO WARRIORS! Playoffs in 07!! :)
