Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

OPEN THREAD: Game #63- Warriors vs Clippers- Stakes Is Even Higher

Warriors (W-L): 28-35

Clippers (W-L): 29-31

Time: 7:30pm PST

TV: NBA TV

Radio: KNBR 680

On Wednesday night against the Melo-less Denver Nuggets it was time to find out the truth and we did- the Warriors are still in it. There was a LOT to like from that game. I called that game the most important game of the season. Well, with that win tonight's game against the LA Clippers becomes THE MOST IMPORTANT GAME OF THE SEASON- really.

The last time the Warriors faced the Paper Clips it was an incredibly frustrating blowout loss. Stakes were high, but the Dubs didn't come through. The worst part about the loss was having to list out 5 reasons why I love the Clippers. Hopefully at least GSoM friend ClipperSteve from Clips Nation enjoyed it. That loss started an ugly 6 game losing streak for the Warriors, that we'll happily gloss over here.

Thankfully things are different now. The Warriors finally have their starting five and with a healthier roster players who were unmatched as starters now help form a very nice bench. With Boom Dizzle and Jax somewhat healthy the Warriors have some defense (SFGate):

It's no coincidence that Golden State has two of its best defensive quarters of the season with Baron Davis and Stephen Jackson back in the starting lineup. "One makes us better, but both of them out there, they just feed off each other," coach Don Nelson said. "All of a sudden, you've got a third, fourth, fifth guy out there playing with them and they just become better because of it."

In contrast to the Warriors, things haven't been so bright for the Clips recently. Shaun Livingston suffered what might be the nastiest sports injury ever and their could be serious long term consequences. As my man Fuzzy said when the injury happened- "Livingston is like Penny, but before Penny was good." Very sad indeed.

Sam I Am Alien has missed the pass 3 games, but will probably play tonight at the Oracle. Stellar defender Quinton Ross is also questionable for tonight's game. Warrior fan hater Coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. still seems to have that unnecessary drama with Corey Maggette. You just get the feeling this team is going to explode and there's going to be major changes this summer.

Good thing we're Warriors fans. (Wait, did I just write that?) As Jason Richardson notes, it's all about TEAM here:

"The last three games, we've been playing together, playing as a team," said Richardson, who is averaging 24.3 points in that span -- 10 more than his season average. "We're playing at a high level right now."

Vegas Odds: Warriors by 5 (as of 9:42am PST).

Predictions:

  • DJ Fuzzy Logic, Adonal Foyle, Zorgon, and DouR get to celebrate their birthdays in style with a BIG Warrior 3 point win.
  • Baron Davis, Jason Richardson, Stephen Jackson, and Monta Ellis combine for over 80 points
  • The Dubs forces over 15 Clipper turnovers.
  • Adonal Foyle gets 2 birthday blocks.
  • Andris Biedrins fouls out guarding the very clever Elton Brand.
  • Brand goes for 25-12.

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

* Also make sure to head on over to SBNation Hoops brother site Clips Nation and tell ClipperSteve how good looking Sam "Alien" Cassell and Chris "Caveman" Kaman are.

THROW UP A W!

UPDATE: Live Box Score from Yahoo!

UPDATE 2: In probably the biggest game of the past 12 years for this franchise...

Warriors Win 99-89!!

THROW UP THAT W!!

Fo SHOOO
I'm gonna say the Dubs in another convincing victory.

Here are my rundown:

  • SJax continues his sloppy first quarters, coupled with fantastic finishes
  • Beans continues his dominance of the glass, and TMNHarrington doesn't.
*Baron Davis makes Sam Cassel and whatever other scrub they are relying on his toys
*JRich continues to knock down the corner 3 like he was born to do it.

Warriors by 13.

dubs will get this one. Our confidence is sky high right now. We need to take care of this one against a injured Clippers team. We're gonna need another good defensive game against the beast in the paint Elton Brand. Dubs by 7.

If we can stay healthy
There's no reason we won't run them out of the bldg.  That's what I loved so much about the Nuggest game.  There were no particularly flashy moments or contested leads.  We gradually pulled away.  That's what GREAT teams do, on a consistent basis.  It's not that they blow you out by 30, but that over the course of a game, one team's talent/work chips away at the other.  Loved that game.  This game will be exactly the same.  GSW by 12, 102-90.

The Worst Part?
Writing Five Reasons you Love the Clips was the worst part?  Does that mean it was all a lie?  I thought we had something special here!!!

If Ross can't play, the Clippers are in trouble.  They don't have anyone else who can come close to staying in front of Baron - and then there's Monta.  Maybe Jason Hart will surprise me.  Nah.  Prolly not.

Of course the Clippers may be in trouble even with Ross they way you guys have played these last two.

Of course if Elton Brand blocks EVERY FOURTH QUARTER SHOT again, that will help.

Hey ClipperSteve
I'm a born and bread Warrior fan raised in the bay, but I spent 7 years in LA, 4 as a USC undergrad and 2 as a USC grad student. Laker fans and the entire Laker nation have their collective heads up their asses. Much love to the clip show, wish you guys weren't in our division, last year's squad was SOOO fun to watch and root for once the dubs were done and I had Laker fans to piss off

nba.com feeling the momentum
their preview is entitled "healthy warriors are chasing clippers for 8th seed" and has a lot of optimism coming from the players.

J-Rich:

"The last three games, we've been playing together, playing as a team,'' said Richardson, who is averaging 24.3 points in that span - 10 more than his season average. "We're playing at a high level right now.''

Monta:

"We just have to go from here," Golden State's Monta Ellis said. "Everybody is back and we're playing great basketball right now. We just need to continue doing what we are doing."

the warriors have at least three stars showing up every night (out of the foursome of b-diddy, j-rich, al harrington and steve jax) plus the rising stars beidrins and ellis.  6 highly talented guys in all, plus some other occasionally contributing folks.  it's starting to look like that may be enough to be a playoff team.

oh, damn

Getting PUMPED!

When was the last time you can remember the Dubs with "No Injuries Reported"?

Let's do this thing tonight!  If you haven't heard it, there's a great interview with Baron on KNBR, from yesterday's Fitz & Brooks show.  At one point Fitz mention that Baron holds the record for the longest shot in NBA history:

At another point in the interview, Baron talks about getting the Arena PUMPED up:

Let's get it pumped up in here. It's been dead for a long time [...] Every time things get ready to errupt, everybody just kinda holds back.  I'm just tryin' to get the arena, the organization, the fans, our team, everybody to just loosen up [...] have fun and see what happens...

We gotta bring the home court love tonight.  If you're going to the game, don't wait for something  to happen to start yelling.  It's time to

STAND   UP   AND    MAKE    SOME    NOISE!

TV
The game is on NBA TV and NBA TV HD. In the Bay Area on Comcast, that's 416 for NBA TV and 719 for the HD feed. Even if you don't get NBATV, if you are subscribed for HD channels, go to the INHD channel for the game. Comcast customers that's 719, once again.

"...not a natural point guard by any stretch of the imagination..."

I know, natural point guards don't go off for 5,000 dunks during an All-Star game. Back off my baby!

by FoyledAgain on Mar 9, 2007 9:22 PM PST reply actions

by FoyledAgain on Mar 9, 2007 9:24 PM PST reply actions

oooohhhh man
these refs need to look over the rule book, there should have been a travel on ewing or a jump ball

by FoyledAgain on Mar 9, 2007 9:26 PM PST reply actions

Looking good.
Just saw the score on Yahoo. If Warriors win this, it will be a big lift, seeing as our other competitors all lost tonight.

the bottom 10 teams in the west have a "Lost" in the streak category - all except one!

by racsan on Mar 9, 2007 10:11 PM PST reply actions

Whoa...
that was too close, man! hahah wow, how good does it feel to see the Warriors actually trying this new thing called "defense"?  Just kidding, but please don't lose @ Portland!  At least when you lose to Dallas, you still have some respect for yourself!  Jeez, does anyone remember when they used to tease the Mavs about: "There's no D in Dallas"?

Portland your next!

Btw the Lakers lost today too!

by aznwarrior44 on Mar 9, 2007 10:13 PM PST reply actions

Tightly called game
Hopefully we won't encounter too many tightly called games with our pressure defense. The fouls definitely caught up to us in the 3rd quarter. At one point I thought the refs were going to stop us from playing defense.

That was ridiculous. The Warriors are lucky the Clippers are as cold as they are.

by aznwarrior44 on Mar 9, 2007 10:26 PM PST reply actions

O yeah!
Standings:

 6.  LA Lakers 19.5
 7.  Denver 22.0
 8.  LA Clippers 22.5
 9.  Sacramento 23.5
 10.  Golden State 24.0
 11.  New Orl/OKC 24.0
 12.  Minnesota 24.5
 13.  Portland 26.5

I'm pretty sure those are current.

Not necessarily

BD IS
super effecient. 8-10 fgs, 9-9 fts.  I like that. way to step up on the shot selection, boom daddy! :)

Clippers schedule
Clippers got the next 3 games versus Detroit @ home, then they visit San Antonio then Houston on a back-to-back. Warriors got Portland, then Dallas (we own them), then Minnesota. Warriors could make some serious headway in this next week.
