When did you first become a Dubs fan and what is your favorite Warrior memory?

Talking about the playoffs and the dark years in these other posts just made me remember when i first became a warriors fan...My dad and I were watching that 93-94 playoff series with Phoenix, I was about 11 years old and he was telling me that CWebb was the best player. It felt like he convinced me, even though he wasn't trying, that the Warriors were the best team to walk the Earth...It was that 93-94 season when I started watching and I loved how CWebb and Spree would handle the ball and dunk over teams not just a person but to me it seemed like teams...that was a squad!!!...CWebb,I think Owens or Gatling, Mullin, Spree, Avery Johnson in for Hardaway...also do any of you remember that .3 second "spree for three" shot that he made in in 95 or 96 and won the game?...I thought that was the best thing I had ever seen and I WANTED to think that Spree was better then Jordan even though I knew better, I was tellin everyone at school who were Bulls fans that Spree could take Jordan, but for some wierd reason (i guess thats what happens to a warrior fan) I always was willing to eat my words when Jordan did what Jordan does best...man...Now I hope I don't have to eat my words cause my boy thinks they have no chance to make the playoffs but he's starting to get scared cause he's gonna have to buy me some tickets to the playoffs!!...(freakin laker fan)...it's funny too, me and my pops still yell HELLA LOUD when the warriors hit big shots...

Everyone could read my Next Biggest Warriors Fan Contest entry (just go to the Warrior column archives on fsnbayarea.com) if you wanna read about my past.

My favourite moment was when I was playing NBA Live 98, and Mark Price would always shoot backwards and it would always go in. Cause I had mad skillz. Good times.

In terms of real life moments, its when Foyle either made Yao airball it, when Foyle set the pick for Baron, or the one game where we had 8 players (actually 7).

i dont know if you ever played nba live 94 or
i think it was 95 where theres a glitch i found if you trade for shaq to be on the warriors squad stick him at center and shot threes from where the line meets the arc and he never seems to miss...also i remember scoring 437 points with sprewell in one game (with all the fouls off) to take over the scoring title against MJ...hahahaha man i did way to much as a kid...

Wow....
No, sadly, my first NBA Live experience was with 98. Really messy polygons. That bug sounds cool though. Invite a friend over, fire up 3s! XD

In 98, I didn't really trade or anything, I just shot a lot with Mark Price, everyone eles got theirs though. I remember Donyell Marshall made a halfcourt 3 once to win the game.

I did go out and buy a complete NBA Live set a couple years or so ago. For the most part I liked 1994-2000. Before and after they were pretty terrible. But keep in mind I played 94-97 for maybe an hour total, so my analysis isn't in depth at all.

But I'll always remember my fav lineup of Warriors, the ones who bought me to the franchise:

C- Eric Dampier
PF- Joe Smith
SF- Donyell Marshall
SG- Latrell Sprewell
PG- Mark Price

for me
it was once MJ retired. my dad was raised on chicago, so when MJ was around it was like, why would you like anyone else? but then MJ retired and the bulls stunk, so my dad and i kinda stopped payin serious attention to B-Ball (i was only 4 at the time), but we would watch a warriors game from time to time. i mean, i knew who jamison was and who jrich was, but i didnt really care. as a sidenote: i was the biggest Giants fan in the world. i could tell you the batting average, slugging percentage, and on base percentage of all 25 guys on the roster. i watched the giants every day, i NEVER missed a game. and then the warriors started this ad campaign with dunleavy and musselman, in MDJ's rookie year. so i started paying close attention to them for the first 20 games, but then theyd start to stink again and i gave up. it was when the traded for BD where i started to watch them obsessively, like  do now
please dont hold me responsible for any comments i make...im stupid as hell

the year after the championship
First game in 1975, against the New Orleans Jazz (featuring Pete Maravich) the year after the Warriors won the title. So I at least got to hear them announced as "your world champion Golden State Warriors". Seemed like a good deal at the time. Coming off a championship, a future Hall-of-Famer leading the way (Barry), not to mention Jamaal Wilkes and Phil Smith backing him up. But, of course, the rest is a history we're all too familiar with.

by yohan on Apr 11, 2007 6:43 PM PDT reply actions

man, i hope its like that in the future
you got to hear "your world champion Golden State Warriors" and watch pistol pete and rick!!!

by RubberDubDubs on Apr 11, 2007 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

indeed
And I didn't know who Pistol Pete was; my folks and their friend (who took me to the game) were hyping Barry since he was on the home team. But as the game progressed, it was clear that he wasn't the only HOFamer on the floor. Though actually, if memory serves, Gail Goodrich was the one really lighting it up that night, as the Jazz beat the Warriors. I guess I should've taken that as a sign and never returned, but I was too fascinated with the game by the end of the night. Oh well, I'm convinced following a losing team builds character; what kind of character is debatable, but character nonetheless.

Glad to have a fellow long-time fan on the site
I'm starting to feel really old here. I became a Ws fan in 1980 where Lewis Lloyd drained a game winning 3 pointer against the Sonics in Seattle with 1 second left.

The first names I remember were Joe Hassett (with a sweet stroke), World B Free, JBC, Chris Engler (today's version of Todd Fuller), then later Mickey Johnson, Darren Tillis, etc.

I was actually a big fan of the World B. Free teams, especially when Bernard King briefly joined him. Of course they still missed the playoffs, since only six teams made it back then.

Dubs fans
from many generations...thats dope!!..i love hearing stories about the old school teams who used to mop the floors with these other squads, maybe cause im deprived of that, but i never seemed to loose faith in the dubs every season...That line up that Zorgon pointed out with Damp,Smith,Marshall,Spree,Price had to be the hardest working line up of all the dubs teams that i've watched...Nothing came easy for this squad but they seemed to beat the best teams and would always loose to the mediocre teams like our current dubs did earlier this season...I guess thats why I became a die hard fan and it was because when this team of underdogs with praticaly no expierence and no hope could come out and beat last years confrence finalist or champion, that always seemed to get me goin! I never was a bandwagoner I always was going for the underdogs...

always been a fan
for all of my 19 years. i became really hardcore in 98, and i remember jamison made a tip in shot to win a game, and i think that was the one defining moment that made me go "ok, i'm really gonna follow this team." my all time favorite memory is definitely the j-rich buzzer beater to beat dallas. of course if they make the playoffs this year my favorite moment will easily be going to that first playoff home game

first watched them in 73, my favorite team was the 75 team with barry, silk, coach Al, etc. My favorite memory is Jasons spin and three at the buzzer to beat Dallas last year.

2002
pretty recent compared to the rest of you guys..but im only in high school. My favorite Warriors moment was last season when jrich hit that big game winning three against the Mavs (i'm sure you all know what i'm talking about.) The most memorable thing about the Warriors to me though was when they only scored 2 (I think) points in the fourth quarter against Toronto and blew the big lead and lost by one LOL.

my top 5 warrior moments
I've been a diehard dub fan since the early 80's days of Purvis Short, JB Carroll, World B. Free, and Bernard King.  My top 5 most memorable dub moments are:
  1. sprewell's 3 pointer at the buzzer on a baseline inbound pass to steal one from the Hawks on the road.  I yelled my @$$ off in jubilation.
  2. home game against the Orlando Magic during C-Webb's rookie year.  It was his first ever game against Shaq (i.e pre Kings vs Lakers) at the Arena.  The Magic were trailing by a point or two with the ball and just seconds left in the game.  Penny Hardaway takes the ball to the hoop and throws up a floater.  C-Webb blocks (IMO, goaltends) the shot at the peak (i.e on the way down), the refs don't call it, the Warriors grab the rebound and head the other way.  The final buzzer sounds just as Sprewell viciously assaults the rim with his trademark two-handed tomahawk dunk.  It was pandemonium in the Arena.  You would've thought the dubs just won the NBA Championship.  For me, an unforgettable game.
  3. antawn jamison and ebok bryant's 50/50 game.  Wow. It had been the first time in 20 or 30 years that individual players on opposing teams both scored at least 50 points.  They were both on fire and trading baskets.  It was as if they were the only players on the court that night.  Jamison 50 = dub victory.
  4. the dubs demolition of mighty Dallas at the Arena weeks ago.  i will NEVER, EVER forget that game. electric.
and number one of course:

1) sleepy floyd's 29 point 4th quarter barrage in the playoffs to lead the dubs past Magic and the Showtime Lakers (in one game at least). The dubs obviously ended up losing the series, but Sleepy gave me a Warrior memory I will never forget.  Unreal.

tongue-in-cheek honorable mention (sort of, but memorable nonetheless):

avery johnson (all 5'10" of him) winning a jump ball against seven footer Popeye Jones.  And no, he didn't steal the tip, he straight out won it.

aye!!! thats the one
that in bounds that Barnetthad  said had to be in the air to get the shot off since there was only .3 seconds!! I can't believe spree pulled that off...haha that and that cross court J-Rich three against the mavs.

Sprewell > Jordan, (in my mind at one time)
I felt the same way about Sprewell vs Jordan.  I remember when Sprewell played overseas somewhere for an exhibition game.  I forget what country it was in, but the people there treated him like the next Jordan.  I too hated the Bulls.  I loved it when Sprewell dunked over Pippen in the All-Star game.  I've replayed that dunk over and over.  I remember when the 95-96 Bulls (the 72 win season) came to the Arena.  The dubs were at one point leading the Bulls by double digits.  Then MJ took over.  Oh well, it would've been nice to have said that the dubs contributed to one of the Bulls' 10 losses that season.

was MJ wearing the black jersey with red stripes or something like that!...Those jersey's were pretty dope...

hmm
been a fan since 01-02 season(when I  finally understood basketball), but back then Gilbert was my favorite. I didn't know much about basketball back then so when Gilbert left, I didn't know why he left; I got pretty mad.  Then in NBA2k5, I was playing the Warriors for the season thing.  Baron went out with an injury for a month, so I had to use Monta(didn't want to use Fisher), and wow my passion came back again.  I predicted that he will be a star one day, and it came true.  Also, I had a chance to use either Zarko or Andris as my next center and I picked Andris!  The only thing that I was wrong with was that Pietrus would be good as well(my 2nd leading scorer).  At least I got Diogu right, I always knew that he wasn't gonna be good so I didn't use him in the game.  Went to win the championship that year with only 1 lost in a regular season game(last second shot).  Yup, that's my weird "why I love" Warriors moment.

1999
The season we had the All-Star Game. Quite possibly the worst time to truly become a Dubs fan. First game I watched was back in 1994, I think...when I was 6 years old. Was a little quiet as a fan (lost some interest in bball) until the 2004-2005 season, when I began to watch a lot of games again. :D

Of course, I'm only turning 19 this year, so you guys can forgive me for not having been a fan earlier, heh.

From '93 'til...
I started watching the NBA in 1993, starting out as a Suns fan (Barkley's ferociousness + those awesome unis = instant appeal) , but upon anticipating a bright future with Webber and sprewell bringing attitude to Don Nelson's high scoring offense I decided to stick with the home team as my #1 squad. Perfect timing, eh? Ironically one of my early favorite memories was the infamous Webber dunk on Barkley that got featured prominently in TV commercials and SLAM magazine.

Other favorite moments of mine was Sprewell in the in the '97 All-Star game (unfortunately our last representation despite a number of deserving players in recent years), Jamison's 51 points on the Lakers, J-Rich's bouncing the ball off of Carlos Boozer's head in the '03 Rookie/Soph game, the big trade for Baron Davis (and the wins that followed shortly after), the return of Don Nelson, and this season's blowout of the Celtics in late December, which I'm ashamed to admit was the first Warriors game I've ever attended (I was a broke high school/college student for most of my years as a fan). And though it's unfortunately a reflection of the team's bad luck over the years, I also enjoyed the respective announcements of PJ Carlesimo and Mike Montgomery getting fired. :P

Here's to hoping that I can add a more significant memory to this list 4 games from now!

Webber dunk is also on the top 50 best dunks of all time...is it the dunk where he puts the ball around his back and dunks over
Barkley?

i was about 10 years old in 93
when my youth basketball team got the chance to play am exhibition game before the warriors game on the court at the Oracle. Then my team was able to not only stick around for the game, but was allowed floor access during the warriors shootaround to get autographs. I was then that i began to follow warriors basketball closely, and I became addicted later that season because of our great year and playoff appearance.

favorite actual warriors in-game moment would have to be this season at the Mavs home game when we shut down theyr 17 game win streak since i was at the game. Not only were these the best seats i have ever had, but it was the best game i had ever been to.

Ok, you guys make me feel really old....
I first became a Warrior fan back in the mid '60s.  As a kid, my friend and I would ride our shwinn stingrays to SJ City College where the "SF" Warriors opened practice every year.  There we would watch Al Attles, Nate Thurmond, Rick Barry, Jeff Mullin, Joe Ellis, Clyde Lee, etc. practice.  I can remember sitting on the bench next to big Nate and staring at his shoes.  They were the biggest frickin' shoes I'd ever seen.

My favorite memory happened some 10 years later after I moved to Kauai and was far removed from the Bay Area sports scene.  I flew into SJ to visit my family and called some of my friends.  One friend (who had become part of the media) asked if I'd like to go to the 7th game of the Western Conference Finals that night.  The GS Warriors vs. the Chicago Bulls, and we had 5th row seats!  The game was moved to the Cow Palace because the Oakland Coliseum was booked (nobody ever expected the W's playing into May).
I think the W's were down by 16 at halftime and Rick Barry had 4 pts.  Well the 2nd half turned out to be the most exciting basketball I've ever witnessed.  That was the most "juice" I've ever experienced at any event anywhere.  Every time the Dubs hit a shot, the crowd went berzerk, which would juice the team into playing unbelievable BB which would send the crowd even more crazed which would pump the team even higher.  This "juice" took everyone in the building to what can only be described as a near religious experience.  They won going away.  Barry finished with 44 pts. and was 18 for 18 at the freethrow line!  The play of Barry, Wilkes, Phil Smith, and the rest of the Warriors was awe inspiring.

The crowd rushed the court as my friend boosted me up to try and get the net from the basket.  Someone else beat me to it, but I ended up surveying the scene from on top of the backboard!  It was pandemonium as our favorite home team was in the Finals for the first time.  Later, my friend and I ended up walking rookie Keith Wilkes to his VW as we talked about the game, the season, and the upcoming Finals.  I also remember standing near Oscar Robertson as he spoke on TV saying the Warriors would lose to the more experienced Washington Bullets.  He predicted they would lose in 4 straight.  The Warriors swept in 4 straight, as Al Attles used his entire team to run teams ragged.  You're still the "man", Al.

The current Warrior team is the closest thing to that team.  Regardless whether they make the playoffs or not this year, there is some exciting and "high" times to come in the near future.  I sense that certain feeling again when watching this team.  We are on the fast track to the Promised Land.  You Gotta Love It.

by World B Free on Apr 13, 2007 3:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Even though your older then alot of us
I don't think luv for the dubs ever ages in what you have explained this team is the closest thing to that! I've felt that with the 94-93 team and i could barley understand it then, just that it felt good...but man...if we could have the same thing you had in your expierence except for walking wit the athletes and all that genuine stuff, we would be back on cloud nine!!
"and was 18 for 18 at the freethrow line was Berry shooting underhand at the time??
