A Call for Civility from MMB
While a certain amount of good natured trash talking is part of sports in general, it has to be tempered with a bit of respect as well. Unfortunately, it's all to easy to get carried away on the internet, when there are no consequences to your actions and it's easy to forget basic civility.
Could you guys chill out, just a little bit? Since the Warriors clenched a playoff spot it's been a bit over the line. Poll Bombing? Alright, whatever. But a few requests-
Keep it clean. Stop with the personal attacks, the f-bombs, and the general ugliness. No need for it. Some of it really is unbelievable. Do you kiss your momma with that mouth?
Don't spam. Please don't post multiple, content repetitive diaries. They push other ones off the list needlessly. If you've got something that's diary worthy, go ahead. If it's just a comment, or a response to something, put it in an existing thread.
And a kind request from me- would you leave the signature photos here? While it's certainly not a rule, we've established a pretty solid community standard that they're not used at Mavs MoneyBall. As a matter of aesthetics, I sure think they're ugly. But embedded graphics also slow page loads down for people on dialup, and can harbor browser exploits.
The most disappointing thing is that there's plenty of basketball to be discussed. Unfortunately, I'm not really inclined to discuss those issues with the current behavior of GSOM posters at MMB. So chill out, pose some questions or make some comments, and lets talk about it.
So here's the first question I'll put to you guys- what do you think the over/under for the games is? 220? 240?
This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

I dont know
And PHO weak? That's a homerism...
The Mavs were a soft team- back when Nellie was the coach. If you haven't seen any games other than the ones against Golden State, I think you'll probably be in for a little surprise. I'm honestly not saying that in a mocking tone, but most people who haven't seen the Mavs play much this year don't realize how differently they really are playing. Devean George and Greg Buckner are the biggest reasons. They're both big upgrades from last season. George doesn't have the offensive firepower of Keith Van Horn, but that's probably a good thing. Devin George has also really matured as a player this year- look at some of his assist line breakdowns.

You didn't
Like I said- soft? Not so much. They put an absolute drubbing on quite a number of teams this year, including handing the Lakers their worst home loss. Ever. They've performed quite poorly against the GSW, but as I said somewhere else, in context only the middle game is very instructive about that, and a sample size of one isn't overwhelming. I am interested to see how the Mavericks do on yalls court. I'd be more than happy to get a split there.
As far as the MVP debate goes, I'm not sold on Dirk as being in the same league as other MVPs from years past. But who else has been there this year? Nash shouldn't have won is first one, much less get three to put him with people like Bird. Kobe might be in the discussion, but the Lakers nearly missed the playoffs for heavens sake. Shaq looks more like 350 than 35. Duncan? Not really. Amare? Even less. Bill Simmons doesn't know what he's talking about half the time, but he's right- this year they probably ought to just not give it out.
And I've had an extensive discussion on MMB that AJ is a student of Popovich, not Nelson. Their styles are almost nothing alike.
by BrodyV on Apr 20, 2007 2:09 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
i did
u say that there is no real mvp this year so give it to dirk. i agree, there is no real mvp..but u dont give it to dirk. they say nash has no D...but dirk does? nash IS the phx suns. dirk IS NOT the allas mavericks.
by jrizzle on Apr 20, 2007 2:16 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dirk's D
Dirk's not a bad defender, but the same thing that makes him such a matchup problem on the offensive end really hurts him on D. He's either stuck guarding someone that's far quicker laterally than him, or someone with a much stronger base. Consequently, he's not a great one on one defender, but does a more than serviceable job with help defense.
That's part of the reason that I think the Mav's success in dictating tempo is going to depend on Buckner and George. George can play guys bigger than him, and Buckner (if his knee is healthy and he can stay out of foul trouble) is a homeless man's Bruce Bowen. Without the whole "sticking his feet under people intentionally" thing.
Howard is probably the best perimiter defender on the team, but he's been asked to play second banana too much for that. If he's asked to shut down someone like Baron Davis or Jason Richardson, then Terry and Harris have to really step up their offensive game.

Style
Most likely, I think we're going to see a conventional lineup to start the series, with Harris and George coming in when things get fast and small. I said somewhere else that Damp is actually a better perimeter defender than Diop, though you have to have really paid attention during the PHO games to see it. There's been some discussion as to whether Avery's comments about him needing a "monster series" are the truth, or just gamesmanship to try and goad Nellie into playing less small ball. I think they're the truth. I wouldn't be surprised to see Damp getting LOTS more offensive touches than he ever has in a playoff series. At the same time, I can also see Avery throwing that straight out the window if Damp can't convert them.
We'll see. I think it comes down to the defensive play of Buckner and George, to be quite honest.

did i mention you have a soft team on ur hands that will be pushed around by the GSW?
Dallas is usually more athletic than any team they face. That is why they now "own" the spurs. Their athleticism and versitility is too much for SA to handle. (Why did SA get james white?) Their other rival, PHX, is very athletic, arguably more so than the mavs, so the mavs, being the versatile team that they are, can impose a more physical style when they cannto compete athletically. This is where it gets hard for Dallas. GSW are more athletic. We are more physical. Our star sets the tone on the defensive end.

Alright
I do have to address this though "No diss to Avery, but he is not even in the same mouthwash as Don Nelson. He's Walmart brand t-shirt, Nelson is Saks. "
You might want to check out a few of the records and accolades that Avery has first.
Unless you want to argue about all those NBA Championships that Nelson has won with the talented squads he's put together...

THE TRUTH ABOUT COMA
talk about a negative piece of work. not only are u claiming hayward when ur obviously from the hayward hills lol, which is way different, but then u go around talking about no warrior excitment in ur profile?? no wonder ur nothing but negative on here and dissing those of us that are the most passionate about our team... ur probably some privelaged individual who was never satisfied with anything in his life and has developed a ton of negativity... u probably went to like moreau catholic or some ritzy private school, little do u know that a golden state warrior graduated from one of the regular public high schools in hayward... i feel sorry for u man... now i can see how u r... it all makes sense, paired with ur charicature of Al Harrington as a turtle, yeah, it's a funny joke for some, but for someone negative as u i see it as more of an insult to poor al than a "laughing with him" sort of thing...it all comes together
ur just hella negative, and hate the world, even when the most exciting thing in 13 years is happening in the bay area.
I'm contemplating whether you're even worth my time to copy and paste this into a full out diary just to blast you... i'm sure the die hard warrior fans will respond to someone like u spreading negativity during such an amazing time.

Here's the deal with Mavs trolls:
If they do win it all, well, yeah, they silence the critics, but in the end they'll just be doing what was expected of them as the 6th-best regular season team of all-time. More importantly, though -- and here's where the bed-wetting comes in -- what they fear deep down is that they don't have the what it takes to win it all. Even in a best case scenario they're only one of a half dozen teams with a legit title shot this year (along with SA, Phoenix, Houston, Detroit and Miami) ... and among those six they likely have the smallest cojones of the bunch. They're a 15% shot to go all the way at best.
So what does Bedwetting Mavs fan do to assuage his fears? He come to the fansite of the #8 playoff seed -- a team no basketball expert gives a chance in hell to win the series -- and talks smack. This way, when his team does manage to squeak past the first round (in six or seven games, I'm guessing) he can wring some pathetic morsel of pleasure out of what promises to be another heartbreaking playoffs.
Basically, Mavs fan can't stand our joy: it drives him mad with envy that we've had more joy during this amazing late-season run than they're likely to have all-season, short of an NBA championship. Sorry, that's just the way it is dudes. We're like a lovesick Romeo who's just been kissed for the first time by the girl we've pined after forever. You guys are bitter married men trapped in a boring, "stable" relationship.
That said ... a little word of wisdom Warriors fans: I really don't see the need to take every little piece of bait these fools leave for us. Mavs fans will never be able to diminish our joy, but they have managed to turn this site into a big gaping hole of stupidity and suck. Why give them satisfaction? The best way to keep them from coming here and starting pissing contests is to ignore them. Seriously, they're beneath us.

Just cuz one dude said something doesn't warrant typing paper bullets and someone... or vice versa from another place. maybe it's a new rivalry, which is awesome cuz the warriors don't have any real rivalries but maybe the clips for who might get the #1 lottery pick year to year... lets just talk some hoops instead of throwing up basketball gang signs from our computer chairs.

DJ Ignorant
I have a suspicion as to why you started talking about "gang signs". Right before you posted this, I responded to coma's continued attacks on GSoM fans as of late. I simply noted that EVEN ON HIS OWN GSoM PROFILE, coma is attacking THE CITY HE'S FROM, which happens to be Hayward, to show that he's ultra negative. For you to immediately correlate that with gangs and people throwing up "gang signs" just because it's hayward is really super ignorant, and I feel sorry for you for having such a low level of consciousness to say something like that. Rubberdub's response to you kinda shows that he also sees why you're using the "gang" analogies.
I may be wrong, but I had to speak on it. It's amazing how on so many other articles right now so many people are just blatantly using profanities and directing them at each other, and instead of going through that, one of the moderators has to come on here and make a statement like this.
Isn't a profane attack a little more serious than accusing someone of throwing up which set they claim?

If War brings Peace, Dubz' wit it then!
by gsdubz on Apr 21, 2007 7:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
easy buddy
I think his post was timely and the gang reference was just an analogy that should be taken with a grain of salt. IMO you're over-reacting to that reference, but if it really bothered you then i hope you can at least see how everyone else is trying to use it harmlessly and in fun. As for dissing Hayward, i think you read way too much into that.
And as for coma's stuff on this site lately... i'll just say that some of his stuff is the real lowlight of this site to me. But you gotta take the good with the bad.
