OPEN THREAD: Game #75- Warriors @ Rockets - Don't Forget Our Style

Watch your back big man...
WE TRUE WARRIORS!!

Warriors (W-L): 35-39

Rockets (W-L): 47-27

Time: 5:30pm PST

TV: FSN+

Radio: KNBR 1050

In many ways the Warriors and Rockets are complete opposites:

  • The Warriors are coached by Nellie, one of the NBA's greatest offensive masterminds, while the Rockets are led by Jeff Van Gundy, a brilliant, defensive-minded disciple of Pat Riley.
  • The Warriors don't exactly get many votes for the All-Star Sunday festivities, while the Rockets with TMac and the Ming Dynasty routinely get more votes than George Bush in Texas.
  • The Warriors play offense and the Rockets play defense.
  • The Warriors are undersized, while the Rockets are big with Mount Mutombo and The Great Wall of Yao.
  • When the Warriors win the lottery they get Joe Smith. When the Rockets win the lottery they get Yao Ming.
  • The Warriors win on thrilling last second jumpers, but the Rockets blow teams out.

The Warriors and Rockets are complete opposites, but tonight is going to be completely fun. Don't put it past Nellie do something crazy like putting TMNHarrington on Yao.

Al's ready for some serious small ball (Contra Costa Times):

"It makes us more dangerous, because no (center) in the league can guard me, and no (power forward) in the league can guard Jack," Harrington said. "It's something that we just have to try. But if we're going to do that, we've got to get a high number of rebounds."

"We'll never give up on the boards like that, but obviously, that's our reality: We're not a great rebounding team," Harrington said. "So we're going to try to make up for it with our quickness and versatility."

And Baron's ready to eat up whatever Nellie's got (SFGate):

"Whatever coach is cooking up, we're going to eat it, take it, digest it, and try to apply it out there on the court," Davis said. "It's worked the last two games, and coach always likes to keep us on our toes."

Are you ready?

Keys to getting this W:

  • Play OUR style of hoops. Under no circumstance should the Warriors try to match up to the Rockets' personnel (i.e. no Foyle on Yao). Force the Rockets to play Nellieball- they can't hang just like the Dubs can't hang trying to play Rileyball.
  • BLITZ! From the moment the Warriors lose the opening tip (they excel at this), they need to be in full out attack mode on offense. Push the ball at a frantic pace. The key is going to be finishing off those drives, making those free throws, and knocking down those jumpers. If the Warriors don't make their shots quickly at a high rate, it's going to be a long night.
  • Play zone, play man, play zone, play man. Double team, triple team, zero team (the Warriors excel at this too). Confuse the Rockets and render their half court sets useless. Wreak complete havoc on defense by getting into the passing lanes, pick the Rocket guards when they're careless with the rock, and sneak up from behind to swat and bother Yao's slow, mechanical jumper. All hands must be active on defense for a complete 48 minutes if the Dubs are going to throw up that W.
  • The bench is going to need to step up big time. I imagine Andris Biedrins will be coming off the bench, which will make the Warriors that much deadlier. Biedrins, MP2, Barnes Baby, and Josh POWell need to come in with energy and focus.
  • Run.
  • Run.
  • And run.

Vegas Odds: Rockets by 7.5 (as of 12:07am PST).

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 1.
  • At one point in the game Nellie goes with PG- Boom Dizzle, SG- Ellis to the Rim, SF- JRich or Die Flying, PF- Barnes Baby, and C- Action Jackson.
  • JRich matches TMac basket for basket, rebound for rebound, dime for dime, steal for steal, block for block, and dunk for dunk.
  • No Warrior gets T-ed up for gum chewing.
  • Year of the Yao goes for 20 points and 15 boards.
  • The Warriors prove my projection for tonight's game wrong. (Wait, did I just predict that my prediction was going to be off? Now, THAT's love... or playoff push anxiety?).

Make sure to give us your predictions in the comments before tip off and post any comments you have during the game right here.

I think
that Foyle will be getting some minutes just cause Yao takes up half the key, and they'll put Foyle in to take up the other half.

HA
I love the predicting an incorrect prediction. classic GSoM. :)

I predict basically what you predicted, Atma, only i say that J-Rich doesn't match TMac in one category.....turnovers.

And zorgon...you have a very, very, strange website.

Rockets
lost to the Jazz the other night, so look to them having a great game against us. We have more of a chance rooting for the Clippers and Nuggets losing ... but i'm optimistic the Warriors could pull something out. If only we were playing at home!

go dubs
seriously, we need to have the mindset that we can win any game from here on out. We can do this!

Dubs by -12
Look I'm all for running and gunning, but this Rocket team is hitting on all cylinders right now. Even though they've improved on the road, the Warriors still haven't won against a good team on the road. Also, any excellent defensive team such as the Spurs and Rockets, can stop the Warriors run and gun.

The only way the Warriors win tonight is if they can beat the Rockets down the court for easy buckets and shoot the lights out from 3 point range. This will negate the advantage the Rockets have down low. I'll accept that Yao will have a big night, but it needs to be offset by fast breaks layins and 3 point shots. I'm not saying the Warriors need to take a lot of three's, I'm saying that if they start hitting them, keep firing until you go cold. Once you go cold, attack the rim. Maybe Yao will get into foul trouble. Also, I'm not so much worried about TMac, I'm worried that Yao will be super efficient tonight, something like 14-18 from the field which would just kill the Warriors.

As far as playing Adonal on Yao, it's about adjustments. I'm sure Nellie will try opening up with Al at center and see how they run. If they're scoring in bunches like they did against Phoenix, then let them keep playing. If Yao dominates and the team falls behind, I'm sure Nellie has a backup plan to try Biedrins on Yao and then double down with Jax. If that doesn't work, he probably has another backup plan, play Biedrins and Powell on Yao with Al at the 3 for some weakside rebounding. Failing that, his last backup plan is probably putting Foyle on Yao and letting Adonal just put his whole body weight on Yao. Adonal would need to use all 6 fouls and try to frustrate Yao by fouling him hard and not give him anything easy.

Tough tough game tonight. Rox are hot and at home. I'll be rooting for the Dubs but I'm scared of what might happen tonight...

Totally Disagree
"The only way the Warriors win tonight is if they can beat the Rockets down the court for easy buckets and shoot the lights out from 3 point range."

BULL HONKEY! Last time we won on Adonal Muscle, and a bit of Baron Magic. WithOUT the Pacers.

There was no TMac, but I think he and Jrich will cancel each other out.

"Failing that, his last backup plan is probably putting Foyle on Yao and letting Adonal just put his whole body weight on Yao. Adonal would need to use all 6 fouls and try to frustrate Yao by fouling him hard and not give him anything easy."

Adonal is NOT a FOULER. He is a SHOT BLOCKER!

He can put as much pressure on Yao as possible, staying whenever Yao is in, just push and shove and grit. But stay out of foul trouble.

Biedrins and Powell on Yao- Lets leave Hayes or Howard open. They may not be All-Stars, but they have their nights.

Biedrins and Jax- I don't really think a Shooting guard could help guard a Center much. But again, it leaves their PFs open.

Al at C- Explained 1000 times already.

it can be done
sure the warriors have a pitiful road record and the rockets are a team, just like the spurs, that we don't match up very well against.

but remember, the warriors surprised us all by defeating the pistons, a very good defensive team, in detroit.  they are just like the rockets, except they have fan-favorite c-web patrolling the key rather than someone 7'5".

c'mon warriors, SURPRISE US WITH A WIN!

Love to see it
I'd be totally happy to see JRich put up a monster game.  That guy deserves it, they way he works so hard as a lifestyle.  His defense was a little sloppy on Sunday, but hopefully he'll tighten it up tonight.

Funny how everyone is debating Harrington or Foyle at center.  My guess is Beidrins will be in there most of the game to get rebounds.  Neither Foyle or Al are all that consistant in that area.

IMHO, the best way to take this team out is to put pressure on the point, because once the ball gets inside you can count the 2 points.  Force turnovers and get fast break points before that monster defense can get set.  I guess that is an obvious statement since that is how Nellie ball is supposed to be played.

Aaaaaach it's on FSN PLUS :(
AAaaargh----Why oh Why does FSN not want to televise these extremely important games on the regular FSN network---I mean, who CARES about watching the Giant's second game, especially after they got shut out the other day.

I don't want to pay for FSN+---it's highway robbery--

Anyone know of a good South Bay sports bar or Internet site that'll be streaming the game?

ummm...zorgon???
You do realize that last time we played the Rockets....when we won and foyle started and all that....that mister Yao Ming had 38 points and 18 rebounds?
AND....Foyle had 2 rebounds.  He did have 4 blocks thuogh, I'll give him that...

by bradyk2 on Apr 4, 2007 2:53 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If Foyle wasn't playing
He would've scored 50. The Rockets simply passed to him EVERY TIME. Lets look at Yaos shots.

15-32

Hmm, so Adonal did eh. But lets look at the time Adonal played vs. the Time Yao played.

Adonal: 26 Minutes

Yao: 41 Minutes

Adonal didn't guard him the whole time, with Yao scoring when Adonal wasn't playing. Hell, Adonal made 3-6! Better percentage than Yao!

Our Exalted Emperor Nelson also had much to say about Admiral Adonal:

"Foyle looked like a point guard trying to play him," Nelson said. "Incredible. What a man, what a man."

HAS HE FORGOTTEN WHAT THIS QUOTE MEANS?

Don't forget Foyles early dominance:

"The 6-foot-10 Foyle earned a rare start -- only his second this season -- for Golden State and had to guard the 7-6 Yao, who didn't attempt his first shot until 3 1/2 minutes in only to have Foyle block it."

Yao will probobly have the ball a bit less, guiving Adonal a bit more rest, making him that much more effective.

how we'll win this game:
1. hot shooting (something like 57.38478% from the field should do)

  A. 83 fast break pts.
  B. 16-23 from downtown
  C. 9-10 from the line

  1. 2 turnovers (both from Foyle's excellent hands)
  2. get outrebounded 52-20 but again, we get 57 fast break points off the rare defensive rebounds
  3. we get 11 steals which will lead to 26 pts (4 and-ones included)
  4. With us down by 1 pt with 6.8 seconds left, Baron takes it to the hole. Rockets defenders, with the mindset not to foul anyone especially on the drive, CLEARLY avoid Baron. But the refs actually call a foul on Yao. Van Gumby explodes and yells out to the ref "You're my friend" and gets a T. Baron sinks the technical, then eventually makes his other 2 FTs to win the game.
Final score: 94-92 GSW

my prediction...
Is that the Warriors win by 2 after J-Rich explodes for 24 in the 4th quarter after Van Gundy calls him a "con man."

by bradyk2 on Apr 4, 2007 3:08 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

zorgon....
you're right about the fg% but yao still scored 38 on almost 50% shooting. If you take 32 shots in a game, you're either extremely selfish, or getting good looks.

not to mention Yao had a rebound nearly every 2 minutes he played, compared to Foyle's one rebound for every 13 minutes of action.

I'm not saying Foyle didn't do a decent job, or that anyone's better. Foyle is clearly the man for the job.  But the simple fact is we CAN'T stop Yao Ming.  Yao ming CAN stop adonal Foyle, but can't stop Al Harrington.

It was more important that foyle put a body on yao during loose balls than try to go for a reb.  Even thou yao still pulled eleventy billion boards, as someone said, it coulda been worse.

Good, Bad, Ugly
I am a little worried about tonights game...however, I was looking at the remaining schedule for the Nugs, Clips, and Dubs, and I think the Warriors can finish the season with 5 straight wins, and possibly end up with a 41-41 record. The Nugs are in some serious trouble with there schedule, and the Clips are just going to run out of gas. With all that said, I dont feel good about the game 2night, but I DO still feel good about the season somehow.

At the half Warriors up by 5!
A lot of things are going right for the Dubs:
  • This game is Nellieball, not Rileyball.
  • Yao Ming only has 5 points and TMac has a doughnut.
  • Everyone wearing a Warrior jersey tonight is hustling, getting in the passing lanes, and playing great D (aside from beyond the 3pt line, but you can't have everything).
  • Overall great ball movement by the Dubs.
  • The Warriors have already forced 11 Rocket turnovers.
  • On the glass it's pretty much even. Credit the Warriors for crashing the boards hard. All those tips to keep the ball alive are money.
Keeping playing like this and we'll get the W.

bad news tonight with Two starters going out to injury:

mild injuries probably, but its a tie game with the Sonics, 2.3 secs left, and overtime as I typed this and David West missed a chance.

their chance
If Fakers get it under 10 at the half, they have a good chance to help the Dubs...

these announcers
on espn, tnt and nba tv should actually be forced to watch the games they give highlights on.  I'm tired of all the people who say the W's don't play any D cause it just shows they don't watch the games and therefore, don't know their stuff!  Freaks!

I'm gonna try to be positive
today was just really negative because it was supposed to be Foyles game. But otherwise, I'll make a conscious effort to really like this team.
With his past behind him, Adonal looks toward the future, wherever it may be....

Appreciate that
As really now;

N/OKC wins in overtime after losing two key guys early, Steve Kerr wrote an article about the future of DEFENSIVE big men in the NBA on Oden's shoulders, as well as DUBS WIN!

Negatives:
Foyle didn't get burn.

Sac and LAL didn't seem to show up to play tonight.

i just don't understand
how this Laker team beat us 3 times.  Beyond Kobe, LO and Luke, they are an NBDL team.
