Racial Slurs

The Contra Costa Times is reporting that Jazz fans were shouting racial epithets at Golden State players.

Jackson and Richardson both said Thursday that they had been subjected to racial slurs from the predominantly white crowd of 19,911 during Game 2 on Wednesday night.

http://www.contracostatimes.com/ci_5871107?source=rss

If this is true, I am shocked and appalled.  I have been to dozens of Jazz games and never heard such behavior.  Of course, I certainly cannot account for every single redneck in the arena.

And I would not waste any of your time apologizing for or trying to defend cowardly and deplorable decorum such as this.

All I can say is:  Please know that not all Jazz fans are scurrilous, racist @$$holes.

Also, this illustrates why I prefer to frequent GSoM, rather than one of my own homer blogs.  I don't need those freaks any more than you do.

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

Well thank you...for real
It's nice to see that you, as a Jazz fan, would actually come on here and share that with us.  (A link would be vital, can you please edit and add that?)

I have newfound respect for you for saying that.  To be clear, I've never attacked you personally, just took the occassional cheap shot at your Jzz for fouling ;)

New point, I would like to say it's kind of sad that it took a Jazz fan on the GSoM site to find this fact out.  I  believe this has to do with the moderators unintentionally pushing this side a tad more towards the conservative side than they should, by selectively censoring more active and conscious users (like myself) and occassionally being a little harsher on Stephen Jackson than a WARRIOR fanbase should.

That is my opinion.

Now, go ahead and attack me and my "comprehension" or "intelligence" Atma, or perhaps my "college education" dj fuzzy, but that's my opinion and you can't make me hold it back.

You opinion is not grounded in the facts
New point, I would like to say it's kind of sad that it took a Jazz fan on the GSoM site to find this fact out.

It isn't even 9am PST and you're going to criticize GSoMers and the writers for not posting something about this or bringing this up? Haha, calm down man.
I  believe this has to do with the moderators unintentionally pushing this side a tad more towards the conservative side than they should

If you're going to make some ridiculous claim like that, where's your evidence?
by selectively censoring more active and conscious users (like myself)

Please quit posting lies. You have never been censored on GSoM (unless you swore or posted something racist, sexist, homophobic- which to your credit and my knowledge you never have).  Also, your definition of "conscious" is highly questionable. Your "holier than tho" take on who's more progressive is ridiculous given your problematic analysis of racism in sports.
occassionally being a little harsher on Stephen Jackson than a WARRIOR fanbase should.

Huh? Action Jackson has received so much luv from us at GSoM since the day of the trade. So what if he's been criticized for losing his cool a few times? He's not perfect. I think what makes this difficult for you to swallow is that we aren't homers. Never have been, never will be.

You seem to like to paint the Warrior players as untouchable god like figures. They aren't. These are human beings who make mistakes, but also do wonderful things.

Again, I appreciate your opinion. That always has been welcome here and will continue to be. However, when you make false claims and attacks that's just messed up.

They are ringing the bells and the fighters are not listenin!

Atma throws another jab!

Atma with a fierce knee to the stomach and a sock to the head!

Dubz swinging at everything, knocks down the ref!

Both fighters are out of their mind!

lol.  This is like a boxing match out of control, I'll be the bigger one and stop here.  Mr. Urquell knocked some sense into me. (Btw it's between you and me atma, not gsom'ers, nice try though dawg.)

not really surprised
The Warriors have swagger, style, are free-flowing and carefree, talk trash, give refs lip, etc. etc.

Utah is known for being predominately white and ultra-conservative. Not to mention they don't have much culture and diversity out there in SLC, which breeds ignorance. The Warriors are the embodiment of everything you would expect right-wing people to resent. Not really a surprise that this happened.

Whoa. Back the truck up for a second
Where did this attack come from?
Utah is known for being predominately white and ultra-conservative. Not to mention they don't have much culture and diversity out there in SLC, which breeds ignorance.

I've been pretty casual with the polygamy jabs and such, but this over the line.

Stephen Jackson's allegation is, at the moment, just that.  An allegation.  Whether or not it actually happened, I have no idea.  If it did, it's deplorable.  But I can't completely excuse the notion that Jax may be trying a little gamesmanship.  Get the home crowd whipped up, give his teammates a reason to get out there and really beat the Jazz down.  It's possible, but I don't know.  And I think without any evidence aside from Jackson's assertion, it's irresponsible to condemn an entire city.

SLC is definitely not as diverse as the Bay Area, but it certainly doesn't match the ill-informed picture you've painted in your own head.

Isn't it interesting that you chose to illustrate ignorance with ignorance?

MOST of Utah's residents
live in or around SLC.  We're more progressive than you give us credit for.  Seems like you imagine SLC to be like Montgomery Alabama in the early 60s.  Have you been here?  It's just not that different from any other american city it's size.

Let me reiterate, if fans were calling SJ racist names, they should be taken out behind the Delta Center (I have chosen not to accept the new name for that arena) and beaten.  There is no excuse for that type of behavior.  But don't label an entire community 'ignorant' on the strength of a single allegation.  That's not any more fair than me saying that all the residents of Oakland are just a bunch of thugs and gangsters.

SLC Mayor Rocky Anderson
Is one of the most outspoken opponents out there of the criminals in charge of our country. When the Decider-in-Chief came to Utah, he gave one of the sharpest, hardest-hitting anti-Bush administration speeches I've ever seen. In fact, IIRC, "racist" is one of the words he used to describe them. (Couldn't find it on a quick glance at YouTube, but here's an interview he did with a couple of Fox news brownshirts the day before the speech).

Bay Areans like to imagine we're the smartest, most enlightened people on the planet. We're not. Honestly, most of us are more interested in our new i-Pods and Minis than in the horrors and injustices of this world. That's cool, it's natural, but let's not go around acting morally superior to people we know nothing about, just 'cos of the way they look. That's exactly what we're doing in the Middle East.

i think you could go one step farther
and say MOST OF THE UNITED STATES IS RACIST.  it really wouldn't be that controversial.

this is the land of white supremacy.  a nation founded on genocide and slavery.  the "new" world.  the "open" frontier.  utah is definitely a part of the western movement of american history, when the government subsidized a massive war on native americans and land-grabs for millions of europeans.  a lot of it was justified with religion, christianity - prostestant and mormon.  utah is unique maybe to the extent that it is homogenous and insular.  this is the state that almost went to war with the united states government over polygamy.  sure, that is generations ago, but it is definitely a state of certain values, with a certain perspective on the world.

much different than oakland.

definitely not the bay.

slurs
I posted this comment on the interview with the utah blogger as well, but it kinda applies here too...

My dad is non-white and he drove with my mother through Utah in the late 70's.  He said the only thing he remembers from that state is when he sat down at a restaurant during a stop on their drive.  He said he could only remember those blue eyes glaring at him and my mother the whole time they were at the restaurant.  Before they had their food, he just told my mother "let's get out of here"

Now I know that was a couple decades ago, but that's not alot of time if you really think about it.  Most of the people alive back then are still alive today.  And maybe the mindset isn't as intense but I bet it is still there.  I know I wouldn't live in Utah being non-white.

Shadowboy has been a really awesome poster ever since I've started reading his comments so I definately respect him.  He just shows that they aren't all bad in Utah.

As for Action Jax, we have give him a lost of support in the Bay Area.  I think that fan deserved to get punched.  Plus, who wouldn't want a friend like Action Jax!?!  He went up into the stands and put himself in danger for his boy Ronnie.  He lossed a lot of money from his paycheck for him.  I don't think I have any friends that would throw down for me if I was in trouble.

Prejudice
is not dead here.  It's unfortunate, to be sure.  And it is most pronounced in the more rural areas.  But I think that SLC residents, for the most part, have their heads screwed on straight.  And most of them wouldn't tolerate racist behavior.  But there are going to be bigots anywhere you go.  It's a sad fact.

I still contend that those loser fans at the Brawl in the Palace that night got off easy. They shouldn't even be allowed to have an NBA team. Barbarians I tell you.

Regardless of how dumb and costly it was, Jax went into the stands to help defend his boy. I doubt there's anyone here who wouldn't want a boy like that. Sure he can be crazy, but he's got his peoples' back. There's something to be said about that.

Who is actually surprised by this?
Those in the know have always dubbed Utah as one of the hardest places to play, because of the vitriolic comments by the fans there.  Shadowboy you may not be a racist, and you probably aren't, but that place has always been this way.  This isn't news.

The fans latched on to the Jazz' notoriously and historically "dirty" syle of play:  characterized by the nature of their roll players who throw 'bows and have never met a hard foul they didn't like.  Ostertag.  Harpring.  Malone.  The list of bruisers goes on and on.

OK i got off topic.  But the point is, hey, the fans there are probably top 3 in worst people in the league.  If you, shadowboy, or anyone else on this website are just learning this now, then you haven't followed the nba for too long.

Oh yes and ban gsdubz.

you are a bad person if you say bad things, like the N word, but that does not make a fan racist for saying that.   so shame on you for saying a bad word, but don't worry, if you call someone the N word, you're not racist, you're just using a bad word.

what does qualify as a racist then ?
Hey Dubz, This caught my eye. Not pertaining to this utah discussion but in general I feel it's not the words but the intent behind them? If someone wants to hate they can do it with sweet talk. To me a racist is hating another just because they are different, we forget our common bond, forget we are all the same in our hearts, forget to treat as we'd like to be treated. Racist, sexist, homophobic, nationalistic, and all the other hates are born of ignorance and nurtured by fear and greed. We need to be on guard and recognize the ways we are subtl'y suggested to accept them. There's lots of pressure from all directions tryin to make us discriminate for various causes and groups. Be true only to ones self.
And about the N word, funny but my all time favorite song is Tupac's  "Life goes on" and if you are familiar with it you know it would not be the same without the N word, So I can't hate that word, Tupac made it a symbol of strenght to me.

My apologies - for real
I overreacted in how i responded to you, so I'm sorry.  Gotta admit when I make an error in discussion, so I apologize.    I saw you wrote this comment:

"i should say
that i don't think the fans are racist..."

The article states that Jackson heard Utah fans calling him the N word.  Therefore, I concluded that since you stated utah fans aren't racist, you must think that them yelling racial slurs does not make them so.  It appears I have stepped into unchartered territory, as my friend Urquell joined this discuss below and reminded me that words mean different things to different people.  whereas we all agree that word is hideous and shuold never be used, i can't just sit here and accuse you of not thinking that word is racist, despite your utah opinion.

If in fact you are African American, it's out of line for me to come in and say that you don't think the N word is racist, so i feel i was wrong in saying that and i am sorry.  I just was responding to how jackson was verbally assaulted and how you thought Utah fans were bad but not racist for saying those things, i feel bad for jack sometimes. a lot of times.

Now, to be clear, I still don't appreciate you always attacking me and basically expressing negativity towards me every chance you get.  but i had to explain myself here.

All love, a little smack talking and its now out of my system.  All your points were taken.  I love the intelligence and overall NBA knowledge this site brings to the screen too-thats why I love this the Warriors and this site.  Let's go Dub's, I can't wait to see the Sea Of Gold right now.  Go Monta, go Dubs!

What a depressing thread
Running Shadowboy out was completely uncool.  It reminds me of the gloating comments to the YouTube videos showing Warriors fans running a Mavericks fan out of Oracle Arena.  If this is one of the best basketball sites, I'd hate to see the worst.  I quit.

Just to be clear
I'm not directing this at the people who run GSoM -- Atma Brother, etc.  I have complete respect for what they've done.  As for some of the posters, on the other hand . . .
