PLAYOFF OPEN THREAD: Warriors vs Jazz - Taking Care of Home Court

Warriors 0, Jazz 2

Time: 6:00 pm PST

TV: ESPN/ FSN Bay Area

Radio: KNBR 1050

The Jazz have never heard anything like us before. The fans are going to be going nuts at the game tonight. The ESPN broadcasters will be screaming the whole game just so the people watching tv can hear them. It's going to get crazy at the Oracle tonight, 20,000 strong.

The last two games have been incredibly disappointing. Both were games the Warriors could have won, but for some reason or another didn't. All Utah did was maintain their homecourt advantage, just like we have to do in the next 2 games. Remember, Utah was down 0-2 to the Rockets and won the series. This is no different. The Warriors are in an 0-2 hole but are fully capable of beating the Jazz in the series.

Here are some things that need to happen for the Warriors to win:

Get Baron some rest
Someone has to spell Baron during the first 3 quarters so at the end of the game he isn't dead tired. He's playing 45 minutes on one good leg, so those minutes have to be reduced. Who's going to step it up and allow him to get some rest? Stephen Jackson can play some point, Matt Barnes can play a little point too, but one name especially comes to mind, Monta Ellis. The kid has to have fresh legs and is definitely good enough to put in some quality minutes. It's baffling why he's struggled in the playoffs. Perhaps it's the nature of the playoffs where mistakes get magnified and Nellie can't afford to have him learn on the job. But it's definitely more mental for him than anything. You can see it in his body language on the court, tentative, not confident, and a little scared. We'll all be cheering for him tonight not only because the Warriors need him, but I feel bad for the guy. He had his face in a towel after getting removed from the last game and you couldn't help but feel bad for him. But tonight, his struggles end. The Oracle crowd pumps him up and we see him have a solid, not spectacular, game.

Hustle!
Doesn't it seem like Utah is quicker to every loose ball? Doesn't it seem like Utah just wants it more? The Warriors need to play with the same fire and passion that they showed during the Dallas series. It seems like Matt Barnes is the only guy playing up to the Jazz's level of intensity. We need each guy stepping it up a notch to win this series because Utah certainly has. It's not about the rebounds, it's about matching and exceeding the Jazz's hustle. The Jazz are going to kill the Warriors on the boards, but there are so many other small things that need to be done. The Jazz get a lot of free cuts in the lane, they are always near the ball, they get the long rebounds. For a team that's supposed to be quicker, they seem to get beat more often than not on the hustle plays by a supposedly slower team. Tonight at home, down 0-2, there's no reason for the Warriors to come out flat. Hustle, hustle, hustle.

Attack!
Attack the rim, attack the ball handlers, and attack the Jazz. This ties into the hustle mentioned above. If the Warriors don't force their game onto the Jazz, this series is over. They're letting the Jazz do whatever they want and dictate the game. Well this time, I want to see the Warriors not settle for the pull up 3's. I know AK47 is lurking in the paint, but if they drive the lane and cut to the open spots, it will help negate his impact. Driving the lane will also help open up the 3's so they'll get better looks outside. Attacking the ball handlers is key. The Jazz have become too confident handling the ball on the perimeter. Deron Williams and AK47 need to be harassed when they have the ball. Make their two best passers have a difficult time of throwing entry passes or passes to cutters. Stop giving Okur open looks from 3. The guy can't handle the ball against the Warrior guards, so get in his face, run at him when he shoots, and make him put the ball on the floor. The Warriors need to challenge everything the Jazz do. Don't take your foot off the gas tonight boys.

Vegas Odds: Warriors by 6.5 (as of 1:43pm)

Predictions:

  • Warriors by 12
  • Baron outduels Deron
  • The Oracle crowd pumps up Monta and he finally breaks through with a nice game
  • The Jazz go deaf from the noise at the Oracle

Excited
I was happy to read that Monta Ellis should be getting 18-20 minutes of playing time tonight.

http://www1.pressdemocrat.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070511/NEWS/705110388/1010/SPT

If we can get the kid playing at his superstar level, then this series will take an interesting turn..

Go Monta!!!  Go Ws!!

uhh....
18-20 minutes?!!?!? What is Nellie trying to do?!?! Lose the game?! Don't get me wrong... I'm all for giving Monta more playing time to get his confidence up... but 18-20 minutes???? Who's going to be sitting on the bench for these 18-20 minutes that Monta will be on the floor? Baron? Jrich? Jax? Matt? Al? AB? I know we could use more contributions... but 18-20 minutes?!?!

Warriors need all the size they can get to play zone with Boozer... Jrich/Barnes/Jax/Pietrus are having a hard enough time fighting for position in the paint... Monta is going to get pushed around like a rag doll!!! Man oh man... Aside from Pietrus's bricked FTs, he did pretty well up until that point... we need Pietrus's defensive abilities and size... I hope Nellie isnt benching Pietrus for Monta.

I really hope Nellie has a master plan and proves me wrong for thinking that the Warriors will lose with Monta getting 18-20 minutes. I really hope so.

the only thing the Warriors
did wrong in Game 1 and Game 2 was not close out... I really hope Nellie doesn't re-vamp the entire gameplan.... to include Monta getting 18-20 minutes...

Monta
We need Monta tonight.  We need someone with legs and quickness hitting jumpers and disrupting the passing lanes on defense.  Monta could be that guy.

Go Dubs.

WAR REE YERS!!!
I believe Monta will play a significant role in the rest of the series and he just needs to get a little more run...HAVE FAITH PEOPLE!!!

I anticipate a standing ovation for Derek Fisher by the Oakland crowd...they're cool like that... then boo him every time he touches the ball after that.

the Oakland crowd needs to show some serious support for Ellis... He needs us as much as we need him...

Give that man a standing ovation when he comes into the game to show him some support
He is hurting and needs to have a boost to his confidence... I"m sure everyone saw him (probably) in tears after getting a shot to start the 3rd or 4th quarter and picked up 2 quick (weak) fouls and the short leash was yanked...
He wants to do well, and now it's time for him to step up like the Man he is...
WAR REE YERS!!!

Giving a shout out to Mr. Mean, Purvis Short, J.B. Carrol, Bernard and of course, Mr. Bill King

More on Monta
I remember when I was fresh out of high school, I could barely hold down a job as a busboy.

I fully understand what Ellis is going through right now, and I know he's gonna come through for his team.  Monta is great and the world will see tonight what we've known all season.

by Don III on May 11, 2007 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

We need
someone to take it to the hole as much as possible. Monta can do that. It is a must we get these guys in foul trouble so they can't play as aggresive as they wan't and try to swat everything that is in the air. I hope Monta does get 18-20 minutes and I hope he is taking it to the whole for 15 of those minutes.

Warriors are only being out rebounded 24-17. Jazz only have just 6 offensive boards, as do the Warriors.

Warriors have 14 assists to 12 for the Jazz. Jazz have 14 turnovers. W's have only 5.

that's what i'm talking about
so many suddenly-vocal Warrior haters in L.A. blasted me the past 36 hours about how my team is a bunch of chokers. blah. blah. blah.

i stood strong. firm in my convention that games 3 and 4 are in the bag. so far, they're making me look good.

it's clear that not only to our boys feed off our energy, but that it's demoralizing to our opponents as well. everyone needs to wear yellow, and we just can't miss. (note: in game 4, only a fraction of the crowd wore their yellows). it's great to see, i got sick of hearing how heroic Derek Freakin' Fisher was.

it's our time baby!

playoff flashback
anyone catch those Warriors-Utah playoff flashbacks. it was beautiful.

the shove by Malone that ignited the first 2-0 come back in 30 years. manute for three (hey that's my name). mullin's unstoppable slow motion layup. (damn, the game was so different back then).

Those series are what made me become a true Warrior fan. Anyone else have good memories from those series?

  1. I remember George Karl's reaction when we heat the clinching layup in the final minute of game 5 in '87. That was such a successful season where we came from nowhere to the Western Conference semis.
  2. Manute blocking shot after shot in games 1 and 2, totally taking Karl Malone out of his game, he was so frustrated that he ripped the basketball pad of the basket stand in game 1.
  3. Chris Mullin hitting nearly every open shot in game 1 on his way to 41 big ones.
  4. Teagle's breakaway slam to pretty much end game 2 and take two road games at Utah. We were down by 15 in that game, then came bak and won by double digits.
Please share.

Crowd looks out of it
because the Warriors have been playing the score, and Utah successfully slowed down the tempo a bit. Plus Baron's been on the bench so there havent been that many incredible plays. Doesn't matter, Utah fans were only into it because it was the first time all season that they got to watch exciting basketball. I bet deep down Utah fans are jealous, they have to watch their team but they wish they were Warriors fans. They hate us cause they ain't us!

Ouch @ Replay of Baron jamming
on Andrei Kirilenko and the Foyle reaction, that might make him all moody again like in his first few playoff games this year and the more the better!

No more 7 block games on the Dubs!

Baron's
a BEAST! He ripped on Kirilenko. That dunk was insane. Just crazy.  You can just see the desire in BD's eyes in this entire playoffs. He's possessed by want. His game is just on a whole new level.  He won't let the Warriors lose.

by RubberDubDubs on May 11, 2007 9:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Holy COWWWW !!!
That's the way you do it!

After the nail-biters in Utah, I hope this blowout is getting into Utah's heads about who really is better.  More importantly, I hope the Ellis breakout and the W boards are here to stay.

I enjoy the FSN commentary, especially Barnett, but a lot of times in this game Fitz sounded like he was practicing his ESPN highlight calls.  After declaring early that "the weight of the world is now off Ellis and Pietrus' shoulders" I could feel Barnett rolling his eyes at him.

by achiappanza on May 11, 2007 9:40 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Fitz is second only to Bill Walton...
...when it comes to hyperbole.  his homerism is acceptable only because we're now living in the same emotional euphoria that he tries to manufacturer every night.  in the middle of the season it can get a bit eyerolling, but i'm on the same cloud 9 as him right now, so i'll brush off all the silliness i'm finding myself prone to game in and game out as well.

Props, gentlemen
Man, I hate being right. Even as a Jazz fan and blogger, I knew we were going to lose tonight. I have to admire the Warriors' performance. I do think this is a closer game if 1) the refs don't neuter the Jazz by fouling out our point guards and 2) the Dubs don't shoot an ungodly 3-point percentage.

Don't mistake the above comment, I don't think it was a poorly officiated game overall. The stats (foul count, free throws) bear out that it was fairly even. But six first-half fouls on Utah's only two point guards are FAR more harmful than late fouls on Biedrins and Barnes in garbage time. The Jazz can't function without a point guard. That's where all those turnovers came from.

Regardless of that, though, the Dubs deserved this win. I'll be interested to see if anything changes in Game 4.

if your guards were good enough...
...to stay in front of anyone without fouling you wouldn't have this problem (you did lead the league in personal fouls this year, so i'm not sure how anyone can not see your rough play as a statistical certainty at this point, or did you just begin watching your team last week).  you're welcome for the home cooking in Salt Lake, but these professional officials (Dick Bevetta, et al) refused to jump on Derek Fisher's jock like those numbskulls in game 2.
