Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

stephen jackson

Someone needs to tell Nelson that's it's alright to take this dude out of the game when he's struggling. It seems like Nelson is afraid that if he takes out Jackson for too long, he thinks that Jax. might be another Webber. People complain about Monta with his handles, but Stephen Jax. driving is a turnover waiting to happen. Yea, this guy's stepped up big for us throughout the playoffs, but in this series, he's been terrible. Nelson needs to stop thinking that Jax. is Scottie Pippen. I said it before like 3 months ago and people started hatin, but this guy has LIMITATIONS to his game that he doesn't realize. He needs to be a distributer when he drives. Other than that, he should just be a shooter. Every once in a while he does get to the basket, but more times than not, it's ridiculous to say he should be driving more. It's simply not his game. He's not a one on one player. Leave it up to Baron, Monta, J-Rich. Jackson should do more of what he did in the season, which is be a team player. No more isos please.

yeah....
Nellie seems a bit hell-bent on having Jax go at his defender for solid stretches down the game... he wasn't being defended by AK47 in those stretches that everyone is complaining about(and rightfully so) he was being defended by a smaller defender... Derek Fisher I think? Theres no point in a larger player trying to dribble past a smaller, faster, guard.... it's good to see Nellie has confidence in his players... but let's run some motion offense! The Warriors are so dangerous in a motion offense...

Steinmetz
made a good point on KNBR yesterday, next to BD, JAX is the smartest player on the team in terms of dribling and making passes, I agree with you, when I see JAX bringing it up court I get nervous, esp. when he drives, but he has the most experience, more than BD in the postseason with the ring, but yah, I would love to see Ellis with the ball more up the court.

by dallesandro25 on May 15, 2007 11:28 AM PDT reply actions

recall also that
Steinmetz said Monta and J-rich don't play because they aren't doing what he wants on defense

by Zig on May 15, 2007 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I love Jax but..
I mean I love the guys game and attitude but sometimes he turns into a ballhog. I cant tell you how many times he had tried to force it to the hoop and gets stripped of the ball and glares at the ref. I mean in game 4 we had a 4 on 1 fast break and Jackson fired up a 3. I mean come on I now the 3 ball is part of our game but come on take the percentages.

by ghostridebaron on May 15, 2007 11:30 AM PDT reply actions

In those situations though
what else are they getting?  Notice when he does it he is trying to get fouled because nobody is moving

I agree though the complaining has to get toned down

I also think if they had more going on on offense he would tone the drives down because he is a smart player

To me he is more important than J_rich at this point

by Zig on May 15, 2007 11:35 AM PDT up reply actions

he is the only player
on the team who can consistently get fouled and shoot free throws and he is their best and smartest defender.  At times when all they can get is jump shots they need something he trys to make it happen

I think those postives on this team are why Nelson stays with him

Don't forget J-rich and Monta were pulled because of their defense

Apparently as bad as J-Rich was in game 4 on Offenese he D was even worse.  Its hard to tell on TV

by Zig on May 15, 2007 11:32 AM PDT reply actions

Agreed
Nellie had to take the good with the bad when it came to Jax.  Jax accounted for 11 of the Dubs 20 made freethrows that night.  He also shot 11 of 12 from the line.  For all the bad decisions he made, he was the only player I noticed that was trying to get to the line by driving to the basket.

by nautica on May 15, 2007 11:46 AM PDT up reply actions

If J-Rich doesn't play D
and rebound he is not an effective player

The guy has no handles and can't take anyone off the dribble

I would personally consider trading him if there was something attractive

by Zig on May 15, 2007 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

ROFL
at J Rich doesn't play defense or rebound. He is an average defender, I'll give you that. As for rebounding, he is one of the top rebounding guards in the league, that is common knowledge. Don't just type things for the sake of typing them. You end up looking like you don't know what you're talking about, which you don't. Bandwagoners, when things get rough true fans stick with their team, they don't complain about what a player does or doesn't do. You take the good and the bad with every player.

Dispicable Coma
That's disgusting that you would say that to the guy.  He had an opinion, and is defending JRICH, the heart of the team.

Personally, I think the post was an opinion, which I respect, but don't agree with because we need Jax's defending more than any other defender we have.  Nuff said.

WINGSTOP
IS THE BEST!!! I ALWAYS GET AN ORDER OF 20 WINGS, HALF ORIGINAL & HALF LEMON PEPPER AND A SIDE OF RANCH AND THEIR "SPECIAL RECEIPE" FRENCH FRIES. AND THEN KICK BACK WITH A NICE COLD DOS-EQUIS/RED STRIPE/OR STELLA ARTOIS.

WhoreRIORS, you are officially cool in my book. I swear.... I thought I was the only person in the world that liked Wingstop, all my friends hate it.

Work on the reading comprehension
I said IF he doesn't meaning he has some flaws to his game so he has to compensate by rebounding (which he usually does) and Defense (which is lacking sometimes)

by Zig on May 15, 2007 1:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Less Jackson?!
When SJax is playing bad i.e dribbling between 3 defenders or taking a three pointer with 4 defenders and no Warriors past half court for a rebound, yeah that kills.  SJax is a good, not great slasher/penetrator and needs to continue to be aggresive.  When I say that I mean, GO FOR IT-DONT PUSSY FOOT IT AND GET BLOCKED BY AK-47!!!  SJax has a really f'ed up turf toe and that may explain something, but the Warriors as a whole are a slashing team that create shot's for themselves.  Motion offense with 5+ passes before the shot hasn't existed at any point this playoffs although we really need it.  Most points have been off the dribble then kicked out to a shooter who may or may not pass it again, but motion offense?  Its a little too late to implement an offensive scheme we haven't even embraced-that's why journalists say we are "helter skelter".  SJax, just play smart i.e. pass when doubled, don't try to dribble through 3 defenders in the middle of the lane and think about rebounders when shooting 3's.  Other than that I love you man!!!

by gabezgsw on May 15, 2007 12:27 PM PDT reply actions

jrich
has been a solid scorer and rebounder in the playoffs. He plays quiet games, but he's still averaging 6.6 rebounds a game (most on the team in the playoffs) and 19.7 points. He might not be the best defender, but he's still putting up solid consistent numbers.

He got benched in Game 4 because of his D
He is a solid player and a good guy but he is overpaid for what he is

i agree
i like that he at least tries to drive to the hole but my god, there are usually at least 3 huge guys around him. i'm no math major but if 3 guys are guarding 1 guy, that probably will leave 2 other guys open. he needs to find those guys

Since when...
There's a lot of valid points in this thread, but I think everybody is missing the biggest change in Stephen Jackson's life, a change which was initiated by my main man Jim Barnett -- calling Stephen Jackson Jax.
Now I know 90% of the nicknames in professional sports has been watered down to (First letter of first name + first 3 letters of last name, i.e. ARod, JRich, etc.), but I really dislike this nomenclature on Stephen Jackson.
His nickname MUST be more violent.

I also get really nervous when he's handling the ball.
I'd prefer Monta to handle it, but EVERY TIME Monta dribbles upcourt as soon as he crosses midcourt, he defers and gives the rock to somebody else.
The one possession where he took initiative last game he took his man off the dribble and laid it in--easy 2.
He can have that all day, every day.

Nah
Coma, the only nuts I like are my own. I just don't think people need to type things just to fill up space. If you don't know anything about a subject you shouldn't go blurting things out.

by J Rich 4 MVP on May 15, 2007 1:02 PM PDT reply actions

Look at the post by Kawakami
Look at Tim Kawakami's blog (google it) and one of the topics is about why JRich was benched.
Essentially, poor defense.

by the midas touch on May 15, 2007 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Who else can create?
Jackson's had his share of dribbling miscues, but so has Monta.  Forget about the fact that they need Jackson D-ing up somebody all game long (AK, Okur, Boozer, even Williams), sit Baron Davis and tell me who's going to create over the stretch.  Monta's coming around, but he's not to a point where he can recognize what needs to be done and when during a playoff game and drive the team accordingly.

JRich'll wait for his shot, Al will create for himself and Barnes will do a little sumthin sumthin every once in awhile, but Jax is the only guy left on the floor when BD sits that can dictate the game consistently.  He doesn't always dictate correctly, but somebody has to drive the bus.  Besides, if Jax sits, who'll get Andris open looks?

by BmDizBeard on May 15, 2007 1:50 PM PDT reply actions

Get Back on D!
I don't mind Jax being aggressive driving to the hole. But when he does't get a call, he needs to quit whining to the refs and get his ass back on defense. I don't know how many fast breaks points Utah has scored after a Jax turnover, but he has definitely cost the W's stops.

There was one play the other day when he was lying underneath the basket with his hands beneath his head like he was at the beach while play was going on. Get back in the game Jax!

by freshness on May 15, 2007 3:38 PM PDT reply actions

i agree that when jack is struggling they need to
take him out for a bit, but something that wasn't meantioned is that when jackson is furious and he is about to get kicked out of the game like for instance when he got a flagrent and a technical right after that last game, i would take him out cuz  he can't focus and play through that.
