Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Is this the Last Game we see Jason Richardson as a Warrior?

You know what deal seems nice? And not an absurd idea like trading for Milicic? JASON RICHARDSON PLUS the 18th Pick OR EITHER both of our 2nd round picks FOR PAU GASOL. It worked in Realgm.com And I See it working for both teams. Memphis needs scorers, next to Mike Miller, they have the 1st pick over-all and will like draft ODen or better yet Kevin Durant, so they really dont need Gasol who wanted to be traded out. If the want Al Harrington, maybe we can package it to them as well. I heard West is really high on him. Golden State Trade Breakdown Outgoing Jason Richardson 6-6 SG from Michigan State 16.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.4 apg in 32.9 minutes Incoming Pau Gasol 7-0 PF from Spain (Foreign) 20.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.4 apg in 36.1 minutes Change in team outlook: +4.8 ppg, +4.7 rpg, and 0.0 apg. Memphis Trade Breakdown Outgoing Pau Gasol 7-0 PF from Spain (Foreign) 20.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 3.4 apg in 36.1 minutes Incoming Jason Richardson 6-6 SG from Michigan State 16.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 3.4 apg in 32.9 minutes Change in team outlook: -4.8 ppg, -4.7 rpg, and 0.0 apg. Successful Scenario Due to Golden State and Memphis being over the cap, the 25% trade rule is invoked. Golden State and Memphis had to be no more than 125% plus $100,000 of the salary given out for the trade to be accepted, which did happen here. This trade satisfies the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Gasol
Pau would definitely help add inside presence, but after all that JRich has done for us, it would seem awful to trade him to a team that mght not make the playoffs.

by bayagrow on May 16, 2007 3:23 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe so..
But this is a business, so don't be surprised if Mullin pulled a trade like this.. We saw what happened mid-season, right?? I think Gasol would be a great fit!! He's better than Nowitzki and he'd be that missing 4-5 player that can play DEFENSE, grab   rebounds and run with our current lineup... so if this means trading J-Rich, I'm all for it... We'll be a definite NBA title contender...

I disagree
instead of Pietrus let's trade Foyle for Gasol straight up. Gets rid of Foyle's contract too so kills two birds with one stone.

I say trade him
I'm a long time J Rich fan but I'd trade him in a heartbeat to get someone to fill a need in the frontcourt. I don't think the drop off is that much from J Rich to Ellis, and he's changed his game into something that doesn't really suit him- he's become almost exclusively a jump shooter now, doesn't get to the free throw much at all, and his defense was painful to watch during these playoffs.

by Raw26 on May 16, 2007 4:29 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

monta
I love him as much as the next person, but to say there is not much drop off between him JR...umm, NO.  At this point, what we know for sure is that Monta is ultra quick and can finish at the rim.  He's improved, but all the hype on him is based on potential.  JR has one off year with injuries and everybody is ready to give him away.  He works hard and improves different facets of his game EVERY year.  Not to mention the fact that Monta is supposed to be our pg in waiting, which i'm still not sold on either.

I'm not saying that i'm so blinded by my JR love that i'd never trade him.  But we better be getting something damn good in return.  And i agree that Gasol is soft, not to mention whiney.  Give me someone with skill AND heart.  Then it won't be so bad trading someone like JR.

You can't get too attached to players for success!
I agree with Raw 26.  J Rich is a very exciting player to watch and cheer for when your team is up and doing well.  Don't get me wrong.  I enjoy watching his emphatic dunks or his thrilling rare drives to the hoop as much as the next guy.  These plays do not win championships or even play-off series.
You can't depend on someone who is inconsistant, lacks defensive skills, not looking to take it to the hole when your team is counting on you.  Comparison: I think J Rich is way better over-all then Fish but look who guided their team to the victories when their team needed them most.
If J Rich and a few other incentives could be bargained for a young, up-coming, (6'11,250 lb.+)low post player who can consistantly put up 15+ points, 11+ boards, and 2 to 3 blocks per game as well as blend in well with the Warrior transistion type of running game, I say they need to invest in their future play-off runs.

PS- I also like Chuck Hayes since he graduated from my old high school at MC (lots of exciting potential that he has not displayed at the NBA level yet.  Works very well in a quick, up tempo, running transition game).

Reality check
Let me count the problems with this diary:
  1. Milicic for Richardson is not an "absurd idea." Their trade value around the league is probably close to equal. If anything, Darko has more value because of his size and potential.
  2. Pau Gasol for Jason Richardson + #18 ... now that's absurd. Jerry West may dangle Gasol, but if he did he could do a lot better than that.
  3. There is no way Jerry West, or any NBA GM, is "really high" on Al Harrington.
  4. You do know about a little thing called the draft lottery ... right? Your assumption that Memphis is guaranteed the top pick pretty much discredits anything else you have to say about the NBA.
  5. You capitalize way too much and the second half of your post reads like a CNN stock market crawl. Seriously, "Thaddeus Young," are you an actual sentient human being or just an automated computer program that spits out sports-related spam onto this board? Inquiring minds want to know.

Why not
attempt to trade away Jack for an inside post-presence.

I know after what he's done in the two playoffs series it could be impossible, but I'd rather keep JRich than Jack.

by WarriorFanForLife on May 16, 2007 6:24 AM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Because no one..
in their right mind wants Jackson. He is so combustible and looses his head like 30 times per game. We have Jackson until his contract ends.

And I agree with everyone else it would be nice to trade a two guard for a legit post presence but its just not going to happen

by dallaswarrior on May 16, 2007 9:58 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

cha-cha-cha

ok zig
Clearly, if the warriors can get pau gasol for peanuts, yeah we should get him.  Should we give up one of the Dynamic Duo (beans/monta) for him?

You seem to be his prime defender in this diary.  My whole thing is we shouldn't give up our talent for a second-tier big man.  He can't even crack 20 pts per game and the offense has been DESIGNED to run through him in Memphis.

To trade FOR gasol would mean sending biendris to them.  Period.  Why would you want to do that?

by GameSix on May 16, 2007 1:10 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I wouldn't trade AB
no way

I would consider Monta and I would be happy to trade J-Rich

by Zig on May 16, 2007 2:22 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

actually, i'd take gasol or notitzski
gasol has won on the international level (world championships 2006) and would be an amazing pickup.  memphis was holding out for luol deng, a player more highly valued than anyone on our squad.  if the warriors got gasol and somehow kept baron we'd be pretty darn close to a championship contender.

and really, there aren't many options at all for a dominant big man that is available.  gasol is one of the few.  don't be too idealistic about what we can actually put together.

Just because it works on
RealGM doesn't mean it will work in real life. God, this is what I hate most about the offseason, people suggesting trades that would only work in NBA LIVE. What makes you think Memphis is going to trade a BIG for a SMALL??

Thats like the cardinal sin trading, you NEVER trade a big for a small. In this case, you're suggesting that Memphis trades their legit low post player (these are very rare in the NBA), with very little mileage on him.... for a 2 Guard (the easiest position to fill in the NBA), that is no longer the athletic freak he used to be after his knee surgery, is an average defender, and has a horrible handle.

Memphis already has a player like Jrich... in Mike Miller... only Mike Miller is a better, more consistent shooter. Shooting guards grow off trees, legit 7'0 post players do not. If you're gonna be making possible trade ideas, make them freaing realistic. To get Gasol, the Warriors would probably have to give up at least 3 perimeter players and one of them would probably have to be Baron.

The only trade I think can happen...
is a trade for Garnett. HOwever if we want to make a trade like that Biedrins is going to have to be part of the deal along with JR, Harrington and probably Ellis.

This is jsut too much to give up. I havent checked the salaries or anything like that but logically I am assuming that we have to give up this much talent to get Garnett.

When its all said and done I think we are going to have pretty much the same team next year. Lets be patient. Ellis is going to improve along with Biedrins and we are going to learn to play together better as well.

Be patient we can get better by improving over the offseason and working on team chemistry.

As for the offseason we need to make a few draft picks for guys who can give us minutes right away. We also need to sign a few under the radar types who fit in Nelsons system. Our problem in our playoff run is we ran out of gas. WE NEED DEPTH TO MAKE A LONG RUN IN THE PLAYOFFS

Get rid of Jeri(whatever his name is sorry cant spell it) and buyout foyle, let pietrus walk, resign barnes, and grab a few athletic freaks that dont fit in to anyone elses system.

Two players I wouldn't trade on

Otherwise I would be willing to let anyone else go in the right deal, even Monta

Change Nothing!!
Why change now... I see no point in bringing in a big center-type player who's inmobile, that will just make Nellieball less effective. I say we keep our 8 player rotation with the exception of Pietrus. Don't bring in a big center, instead get a versatile forward who can run. Some names that comes to my mind are Diaw, Josh Smith, Gerald Wallace, Villenueva, Ryan Gomes..not Gasol who's slow and lack strength.

by Zig on May 16, 2007 10:57 AM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

agreed
i actually think maybe this is the best way to go. And one name to keep in mind is Chuck Hayes (he is RFA, correct?), who's done a decent job against that Utah frontline in 1st-round of playoffs this year.

He hustles, rebounds, and generally plays bigger than his height suggests. However he doesn't have much perimeter game so maybe Nellie won't like him.

Two things
When's the NBA draft? West is leaving the Grizzlies on July 1. I think the draft is after that if I remember right.

The Grizzlies won't trade Gasol until after the lottery. If they get Oden, they're not trading Gasol. They have their starting frontcourt set for the next 10 years if they get Oden.

I hope not
I also hope that we do not trade for Pau Gasol. We do not need to unload some of our franchise players to get him. Even though Pau would provide hella inside presence in rebounding and shot blocking, he still hasn't reached his peak performance level yet. A dominant post player will certainly be on our agenda for this off-season. J-Rich is such a valuable commodity to our team because he's a highlight reel every game. He also gives us a lot of rebounds at the guard position. He still needs to improve on defense to become a complete player. His defensive skills are average at best. He'll improve in no time. I hope we keep him and our other core players such as B-Diddy, Monta, Jackson, Biedrins, and Barnes. I would hate to see any of the 6th, 7th, or 8th men to leave.

TO TRADE OR NOT TO TRADE...
TRADE...that's the answer!  Whether we can or not is another question though!

If we can trade anyone but BARON, I say DO IT!  There's been a lot of talk about getting ARTEST and trading JRICH for a BIG MAN.  Now tell me, would this starting line-up look that bad?

PG - BARON
SG - ARTEST
SF - JAX
PF - MILICIC/HARRINGTON
C - BIEDRINS/MILICIC

And coming off the bench you still have MONTA, POWELL, BUKE, and whoever else.  I mean again, it's whether or not anyone would trade w/ us, not if we should or shouldn't.

The answer is WE SHOULD.  Anything that will make the team better!  I love JRICH and all, but I think we've seen all we have from him!  As a person he's great, as an athlete he's great, but in the overall scheme of things, we need more defense and rebounding and he's not the guy, and he'd probably have more value than most on our team (aside from BARON, MONTA and BIEDRINS).

GO WARRIORS...TO THE NBA FINALS!!!

"If you build around them...they will come!"

ya great idea...
we need more combustable idots on our team so lets bring in Artest! My God people and why do we want Milicic!!!! We already have Biedrins who is a much better version of Milicic.

Just because we lost doesnt mean we need to blow up the world lets keep our team together and make some moves to make us deeper. If we can go 10 deep and run our asses off we will be really good

by dallaswarrior on May 16, 2007 1:36 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Now you're talking
That could be the best defensive team in the NBA -- a team truly built for a long run deep into the playoffs. Not sure who we'd have to give up for the "Tru Warier" but at this point I could see Sacramento dealing him for well below market value. Maybe Harrington straight up? I like your lineup, but I think I'd actually make Jax the 6th man and start Monta:

Baron
Monta
Artest
Biedrins
Darko
----
Jackson
Barnes
Azubuike
Backup PG (maybe Acie Law with the #18?)
Powell

He's got decent post moves (infinitely better than anyone we got now...) and could try to D up opposing bigs better than what we got. I think he just hasn't been given the consistent minutes to contribute... but usually former all-stars traded a few times tend to lose that fire... so.. dunno

jrich is not the best player for nellieball style
and that is most likely his weakness on this team; this year. i believe this more than i believe his injuries are still bothering him.

however, i think the consensus among fans here would be that in the more structured offenses we have seen from this organization the previous 4+ years, jrich has been the most dependable, clutch player/performer in a warriors jersey. sure he did not always come through, but i can remember more than a few bungled endings by baron as well.

it might be good for jrich to be traded and it might even be better for the warriors, but i will continue to root for him.

by llamalimbo1 on May 16, 2007 3:51 PM PDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Where do you get
That Darko is slow and unathletic? From his Draftnet profile:
He dunks in traffic, dribbles and goes 1 on 1 like a guard, scores on the pull-up jumper, passes well and blocks shots.

Granted, that was 3-4 years ago; since then he's filled out a little and become more of a true post player. He may not be quite as quick as AB, but then what 7-footers are? At age 21, Darko's already an excellent shotblocker (2.93 blocks per 40 minutes) and a solid rebounder (9.2 reb/40 mins); and I suspect his offense would improve greatly on an uptempo team. I mean, a year ago AB was considered a worse player than Darko, and look how much he improved under Nellie.

I'd be really sad to lose JRich, but I think if that deal is offered, you have to pull the trigger and not look back. JRich is what he is: a better-than-average NBA shooting guard who will never be Jordan or Kobe or Wade. Darko's no guarantee, but he has the potential to take this team to the next level. As I said before, the Duncans and Boozers of this world would have a lot harder time of it with two quick, athletic 7-footers patrolling the paint.

by Sleepy Freud on May 16, 2007 4:17 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think he has it in him
and this might be a Mitch Richmond for players with upside and good attitudes kinda deal, something that cursed the Warriors in the past. Lifetime scarring, not an instant healing papercut.

You've noticed in the fantasy game this season Darko hasn't been consistent from game to game, even with consistent PT.

And as you know, the fantasy game is all about being consistent! Do you take TJ Ford on a current hot streak of 25 and 12 for a week or spend 2-3 mil more and get Nash who will get 20-12 every game, no matter what?

by back2back51s on May 16, 2007 4:31 PM PDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You may be right
But keep in mind Darko's only 21. Athletic big men take time to develop, and when/if they finally "get it" -- like Biedrins and Al Jefferson this year -- the change can be sudden and drastic.

It's definitely a crapshoot: there's no guarantee Darko will be one of the ones who gets it. I'm just saying that with Monta, Jax, Barnes, and Kelenna on the roster, and plenty of talented wingmen available at #18, I'd probably be willing to sacrifice JRich for even a 50% chance a getting a Biedrins Part Deux.

But hey, about that GSoM Fantasy League ... did Fantasy Junkie ever post a recap? All that hard work and buildup, and then nary a mention when it was said and done! I mean, jeez, the way the Fantasy League was dissed, you'd think the Warriors had made a crazy late-season run and gotten into the playoffs or something...

Anyway, Fantasy, if you're reading: I'm still waiting for my GSoM t-shirt and my all-expenses paid wild night of passion with Jessica Alba. That is, unless you already gave it to the cheater who ended up in "first place"...

I'm sure they'll be understanding and you'll get your digs, but from Japan you might have to go half on the shipping? =) Or have it sent to a relative in the states who will cover your shipping that might send over care packages anyway and just toss it in the box too.

Moving a big man from team to team every 2 years or so probably doesn't help them get in that groove. See, I dunno, Eddy Curry. He is a prospect, but is he speedy like Claxton? Can he move in the system that Nellie has started?

Will the team slow down into more half court motions with cuts and nifty screening and passing that enables JRich to be the man he was only a season ago? He's very good in a half court offense, how soon people forget due to the Nellie ball return of run and gun. Would trading for Darko keep Nellieball in place and thus, matchup problems due to not running?

True big men don't usually run like Amare and Marion. That's the basic problem, front and center.

Rebounding athletic freaks of nature that will run and hustle for 48 minutes aren't as in the league in numbers like big men either, and the former is pretty important to the Warriors system.

Why Darko? Why not Vlade?
Darko's still young and raw, we need a more polished player and Vladimir Radmanovic fits that bill. Check him out:
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/vladimir_radmanovic/

He's a talented ballhandler, a great passing power forward a fine rebounder, and a solid defender. At 6-10, 234 Radmanovic doesn't have the typical size in a power forward, he does a good job defending the post. I've seen him in the past holding his own against Miami's Alonzo Mourning.. He could do the same with the Boozers and Duncans come playoff time..

And since the Lakers are itching to get rid of him since his snowboard accident, why not? Besides, he'd love the fact that Tahoe's slopes aren't too far from the bay.. lol!

Jason has also gotten better every year
since 2000's draft @ #5, Darko hasn't done crap since his 2003 #2 pick.

Dwight Howard and Darko on the block hasn't worked at all and Darko was getting enough chances with games of 30+ mins a night.

Practically non existent versus Detroit, which plays a much meaner game than Utah. And he definitely could have been a difference maker when there's Dwight, Grant "now over the" Hill, being the only two real options with Turkoglu being an up and comer working off their respective games.

exactly
if darko cant get up for that first round series vs detroit, how is he going to add anything to this team and its championship aspirations? to be successful on this team a player must have heart and a lot more desire than that kid will ever have.

i am not saying he wont fit in somewhere, just not on this team or with this fanbase.

i said it already; i will be a lifelong fan of jrich and his willingness to step aside and be part of this squad rather than the defacto leader. however, jrich might be a better fit on a team where he does not have to run so hard on every possesion(like dallas or detroit) or be his own playmaker.

no matter what anyone says, i believe he is worth an even swap for a player of the same salary range because of his professional attitude, leadership and team play. not to mention he can rack up 20+ points and 6 rebounds per game.

Sarunas
If a team ahead of us in the draft needs a point guard, I say we move up a few spots to grab a big guy that can rebound.

SEAN WILLIAMS
SEAN WILLIAMS BOSTON COLLEGE 6'11 245 LBS. FROM DRAFTEXPRESS.COM His ability to change a game through his mere shot-blocking presence really can't be understated at this point. We were all amazed at the way Justin Williams and Shawn James continued to one-up each other last season with new shot blocking exploits. Williams is currently matching James' record pace of 6.5 swats per game, has a legitimate chance to average a similar number at a much higher level on the season, and disrupts offenses at a level that Ron Everhart could only dream about getting from James. The real news here is while Williams had been billed as a shot blocker and only a shot blocker up to this point, he has added a wrinkle to his game over the summer. In this week's action the junior showed off a much-improved back-to-the-basket offensive arsenal, displaying adequate footwork and surprisingly soft touch while using every bit of his impressive length to score over the defense. The issues we have seen with poor hands have seemingly disappeared, and Williams made very good decisions this week once he had the ball in his hands as far as when to look for his own offense and when to start looking for a teammate. If he wasn't scoring on the low block, he was looking for ways to contribute from the high post, finding fellow BC big men repeatedly on nifty high-low passes. However, there are still a few weaknesses that must be accounted for in any evaluation of Williams' status as an NBA prospect. In terms of physical attributes, it is hard to find a player who does less with more when it comes to rebounding. Looking like a freakish combination of Amare Stoudemire and Theo Ratliff as a weak-side shot blocker, Williams is anything but when battling for a rebound. Naturally explosive and decisive in protecting the rim, he is tentative and lethargic on the glass, routinely losing loose balls and rebounds to players he shouldn't have to break a sweat to overpower. Obviously Williams' rebounding totals are going to look a bit worse than they should because he is chasing so many shots on the way up, but a total of 5 rebounds in the two games last week is simply impossible to explain or justify from a player with such formidable natural gifts. Williams is very hit or miss with his individual post defense, sometimes gobbling up shots with jaw-dropping ease, and in others allowing marginal opponents to score with little apparent resistance at all. The same issues show up with his inconsistency in running the floor, where he can absolutely fly when an uncontested dunk is in the cards but will lollygag up and down the floor in many fastbreak situations on both sides of the ball. His shot blocking totals are even more impressive when one realizes how many potential rejections he passes up on because of his inability to consistently defend the rim in transition.. FROM ESPNINSIDER.COM Sean Williams, 6-10, Jr., C, Boston College Skinny: Next to Oden, the best shot-blocker and shot-altering post player in the draft. Vibe: He's considered a first-round pick, even with his multiple suspensions. FROM NBADRAFT.NET NBA Comparison: Theo Ratliff/ Shawn KEMP Strengths: Athletically Williams has few peers with his leaping ability and quickness ... Extremely mobile player who runs the court with ease and has no problems getting out on the break ... One of the best shot blockers in college where he has great natural instincts ... Possesses all the physical tools to excel, long wingspan, quick hands, timing and the ability to produce multiple jumps in succession ... Offensively Williams has improved greatly adding a solid jump hook and decent turnaround with his back to the basket ... Has good touch around the basket where he is a solid finisher ... When motivated he has the ability to be a quality rebounder ... Possesses a mean streak to attack opposing players who challenge him in the paint ... Excellent lateral quickness enables him to be a tremendous help defender ... Although some have questioned his work ethic one cannot argue with the development of his game ... Has improved tremendously from the free throw line this year where he is no longer a determinant during the last few minutes of close games ... Understands what his role on a team is and rarely tries to go outside of his abilities ... Does a good job of using his long arms and mobility to disrupt post passes for easy steals ... Body suggests that he could add weight and retain his athleticism ... Has a good deal of potential ... Strengths: The best shot blocker to come along in years ... Has the ability to alter any shot in the lane, making him a huge defensive presence ... Length is unbelievable. His 7-5 wingspan and defensive mindset make him a menace to opposing shooters. Loves to block jump shooters on the perimeter ... Gets his fair share of steals as well ... Extremely high vertical leap ... Quickness is outstanding defensively... Has finally developed a semblance of an offensive game... Developing into a decent free throw shooter with an improvement from 51% as a sophomore to mid 70s so far this season... Knows his role in the offense ... Good at getting points on put-backs and dunks ... Defends well man to man as well as on help ... Strong on the boards offensively and defensively ..

Dear Thaddeus Young,
Or should I say, Dear Thaddeus 3.0 the Spam-Generating software program...

Cut the crap.

  1. You already spammed us with that massive Sean Williams epic -- and both times you conveniently excised all the weaknesses and left in only the strengths.
  2. Nobody wants to sift through all that. Copy a couple of salient points and attach a link for people who want to read more.
  3. If you want to prove you're an actual human being with actual thoughts and feelings, try posting an opinion or two of your own rather than continually copying and pasting a whole ton of garbage.
Yes, I'm intentionally being a d*ck to draw you out and see if you are an actual person. So far, you've posted nothing on this site to prove that you are. I'm pretty intrigued by Sean Williams too, and I'd be curious to hear if you have any personal impressions to add to the usual NBAdraft blather. Have you ever seen him play? I mean, assuming you actually have eyes with which to see?
