Totally Hypothetical Trades

This is pure Hypothetical and on the borderlines of impossible but...

We all know that the first 2 draft picks are a lock to get Durant and Oden. So I doubt they will deal. So moving on to the 3rd team...

Atlanta
Needs: Looking for veteran players.
Have: Johnson, Smith, S. Williams and Pachulia

If Johnson can play the point (Not too familiar with ATL) they would probably need a SG.

Could the Warriors offer up Jrich for their 3rd pick?

Memphis
Needs: Point Guard
Have: Gay, Gasol, Miller, Warrick

Could the Warriors offer all 3 picks for Gasol?
Could we trade them JRich for their 4th pick, which could create Swift moving into the starting 5 at PF and use Gasol as trade bait to get Jason Kidd?

Boston
Needs: Shooting Guard, Center
Have: Pierce, Green, Jefferson, Szczerbiak, West

Could the Warriors trade JRich and the 42nd pick to Boston for the 5th pick and Jefferson?

Milwaukee
Needs: Point Guard, Shooting Guard, Small Forward
Have: Redd, M Williams, Villanueva, Bogut, Gadzuric

Could the Warriors package Pietrus (Sign and trade), Jasikevicius, POB & 36th pick for Bogut and the 6th pick?

Minnesota
Needs: Shooting Guard, Power Forward, Center
Have: Foye, Davis, Garnett, McCants, Blount

Could the Warriors send JRich, Foyle, Pietrus (Sign and Trade), Jasikevicius, POB & 36th pick for KG and the 7th pick?

Okay...I will stop there...
I know there are so many possible scenarios for the Warriors and so many moves that are possible. I am jus scratching an itch that I have in regards to the Warriors. As a season ticket holder, I am so excited for next year. The possibilities are jus endless. I figure I would kick around some possible and impossible trade scenarios and hear what creative trades other people have. Feel free to post any rumors or any of your thoughts on trades. All is welcome...

Ummm...
You're kidding, right?

Each one of your proposals is more outlandish than the previous. I especially like how you take trades that are already lopsided in our favor and then sneak in top 10 picks in the best draft in years, just to sweeten the pot a little.

Draft Express has Corey Brewer at #7 and Yi JianLian at #10. So, one of those two guys plus Kevin Garnett for JRich and a bunch of crap we don't want. Love it. Take out the Kevin Garnett part and Minnesota might consider it.

Sorry
Not to harp, but you know what cracks me up?

The fact that even though we absolutely rape Minnesota by snagging Kevin Garnett and Corey Brewer for JRich and a bunch of garbage (for the record, I'd gladly take Corey Brewer straight up for JRich), you still want to hold onto our crappy #18 pick and send them our even crappier #36 pick instead. That's just cold, dude...

I stopped reading
after the first trade where he proposed that we trade them J Rich. Everyone knows they've done nothing but draft 2's and 3's for like 5 years.

You're one scary GM....
  1. J Rich doesn't have that kind of value.
  2. Before you  make these trade proposals, you should probably run it through espn trade machine.
  3. Small for Big trades rarely happen.  Only if the small player is transcendant.  J rich is a good guard but not a great one.
  4. 2nd round picks are worthless.  Sure you can find good players, but most of the time you're lucky to just find a good role player.
Atlanta trade-
It won't work b/c the joe johnson pg experiment was a failure. They are in the market for a pg not another shooting guard .

Memphis-  For all purposes, Stromile Swift has been a bust in the NBA.  When you can't compliment a dominant center like Yao, you're not much of a PF. Believe you me, they're not trying to get rid of Gasol so that they can put Stro into the starting 5.

Boston-  Boston has plenty of backcourt help with pierce.  Jefferson if the only player right now that they can actually build around.  You can't build around J rich.  We wouldn't get jefferson let alone the 5th pick on top of it

Milwaukee-  We offer them nothing they don't have.  They're still high on Bogut.

Minnesota-  See Sleepy's post...

Maybe when you propose a trade, you should probably put yourself in the other GM's shoes.  This all would be well and good for the W's.  But how does it help the other team?

by ThermoElectro on May 24, 2007 11:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

hahah
these trades get shot down right at the beginning, Atlanta in no way trades their 3rd pick, they need a PG too bad.

How about this...
GS trades Dunleavey and Murphy to Portland for Roy and their number #1 pick.

Oh, that's right... Dunmurphy is already gone.

Dammit!  That would have totally worked!

Jax + Harrington for Roy + #1 works
We throw in the #36 and POB and they throw in Aldridge and Randolph to even up the salaries and the talent.

Nah ... check that, the #36 pick could end being someone useful. Make it the #42 instead.

Bogut AND the #6 pick
Corey Brewer or Al Horford would even out the trade a little, dontcha think? ;-P

by Sleepy Freud on May 24, 2007 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

i would like mullin to make simpler moves
sign and trade pietrus to detroit for their #15 and cash. then swap the #15 plus our #18 for a top 7 pick and draft a big man.

perhaps we could also trade foyle and pob to portland for zach randolph.

by stedanko on May 24, 2007 7:54 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

uhhhh how about this
Jason Richardson, Al Harrington, Adonal Foyle, #36 pick, #49 pick for

Kevin Garnett, Randy Foye, Craig Smith

by gizardwizzlizard on May 24, 2007 8:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Honestly
Now I'm not sure whether people are kidding or not. The last two trade suggestions aren't as ridiculous as the ones in the main diary, but they're still pretty ridiculous.

So far the only remotely non-ridiculous scenario I've read involving Garnett is the Adam Lauridsen one that DallasWarrior linked to earlier in the Garnett thread. The basics:

  • Warriors give: Monta Ellis, Jason Richardson, Al Harrington, and Patrick O'Bryant
  • Warriors get: Kevin Garnett, Carlos Arroyo
  • Wolves give: Kevin Garnett
  • Wolves get: Monta Ellis, Darko Milicic, Al Harrington, Patrick O'Bryant, and Keith Bogans.
  • Magic give: Darko Milicic, Carlos Arroyo, Keith Bogans
  • Magic get:  Jason Richardson
The financials all work, and Lauridsen actually takes the time to analyze it from all three teams' perspectives, something we all should do when proposing trades. I think his idea of turning JRich into Darko and spinning off Darko is an especially brilliant one: Orlando already has a dominating pivot, they're one of the very few teams in the NBA that actually needs a shooting guard, and Otis Smith is apparently a big fan of JRich. Whatever you may say about the merits of JRich v. Darko, I guarantee that Darko, as an athletic 21 y.o. 7-footer, has a ton more trade value to 95% of the teams in the league, including Minnesota. Someone needs to fax this deal to the front offices of the three teams immediately.

by Sleepy Freud on May 24, 2007 8:56 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

not ridiculous
detroit needs an energy guy on the wing, even if pietrus is not the best fit - they will not get the right guy at #15 either

portland needs a veteran for the bench and zach will not be happy on the bench - eventhough neither player is inexpensive foyle saves portland $25+ million and zach can fill a need for the warriors(pob is not under contract past next year)

by stedanko on May 24, 2007 9:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ridiculous.
  1. Draft Express has Tiago Splitter at #15. Would you rather have him for a cheap rookie salary or Pietrus for big $$$?
  2. Last I checked, Portland had a couple of centers named Oden and Aldridge. They may well want to deal Randolph, but you couldn't put together a less enticing package for them than POB and Foyle if you tried.
  3. This isn't the NFL: a #18 + a #15 is almost never worth a #7 (Corey Brewer, Julian Wright, or Yi Jianlian).
Plus, I don't really get how are your deals are any "simpler" than the ones proposed in the diary. What could be simpler than JRich for Al Jefferson and a #5 pick? ;-D

by Sleepy Freud on May 24, 2007 9:31 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

think again
i could care less if you think i made good suggestions, but i will go ahead and respond to your ridiculous assertions.

1. who cares what the draft express thinks. i am sure detroit doesn't bother to read it. look at joe dumars' team. he will want a veteran and pietrus is the best fit for the warriors since jrich is worth more than a #15 pick.

can you think of a better way to get another pick because i am absolutely positive that boston will NOT give up al jefferson AND their #5 pick(not even for jrich)?

  1. portland would save over $25 million on a player who  will not contribute; last i checked several teams are willing to take crap players for that kind of cost savings. i am sure they can get a better offer for zach, but i do not think gsw can make them a better offer.
  2. perhaps not many teams would make that swap, but i personally think ainge would rather have #15 & #18 in a deep draft than yi jianlian. plus, mullin and nellie would not pick yi jianlian.

by stedanko on May 25, 2007 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude
It's not a matter of what I think, it's a simple matter of common sense. Try posting your ideas in a Pistons, Blazers, or Celtics chatroom and see what kind of response you get. At least the author of this diary had the humility to back off when he realized he was talking nonsense.

by Sleepy Freud on May 26, 2007 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love it
We get Garnett and a true backup point to Baron that likes to play uptempo (check out his international play, dude loves running).

Sucks that Wolves have Randy Foye instead of Brandon Roy, who'd make a better backcourt partner for Ellis because he has a versatile game including some PG skills, but hey, the Wolves' certainly can't complain about all the talent they're getting back.

by OptionZero on May 24, 2007 9:01 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Minnesota's resulting roster:
Monta Ellis
Randy Foye
Corey Brewer (if avalable at #8)
Al Harrington
Darko Milicic
----
Craig Smith
Mark Blount/POB
Bogans/James

Yes, obviously they'd be taking a step back, but given that implied in the deal is the idea that Garnett is demanding a trade, they could do a lot worse. That would be a hella fun backcourt to watch.

Meanwhile, we pick an athletic 2-3 with our #18, resign Barnes, and end up with:

Baron
Jax
Barnes
Garnett
Biedrins
---
Arroyo
#18 (Nick Young, Thaddeus Young, or Rudy Fernandez)
Kelenna
Powell

Assuming good health, a serious force to be reckoned with in the West.

On a side note: when a deal gets the OZ seal of approval, you know it's a deal to be reckoned with!

id rather barnes come off the bench
we would be a really good team, but i dont think baron and arroy would get along.

by stevenro59 on May 25, 2007 6:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You're right
I much prefer Barnes coming off the bench, too.

The fact is, as great as it would be to get KG, our lineup after dealing JR, Al, and Monta would be a little thin. I like Barnes and Kelenna, but neither is really a starting NBA 2 guard. But, you know, that sort of feels right. If you want KG, it's gotta hurt a little.

On the bright side: after reading some of the Rudy Fernandez buzz, and watching a bunch of clips, I'm almost sold on him as a starting NBA #2 guard. He's already one of the most dominant players in Europe. Seems like he's a little light and could get pushed around defensively, but he's long and active, and his offensive game right now is probably almost as polished and consistent as JRich's.

From Draft Express, which can be pretty critical of players' flaws:

Rudy Fernández is a talented and skilled shooting guard who shows almost every characteristic that a player at his position should display. He's very intense and plays the game with passion. Gifted with very nice athleticism, his main strength is his versatility in the offensive end. The kid can flat out shoot the ball, including three-pointers, with polished mechanics and a good quick release. A clear clue of his ability is his remarkable free throw percentage. Also, his shot selection is very efficient.
It's stunning to see how he emerges all over the floor, perfectly combining the notable skill-set of a talented player and the high intensity of a hard-working guy. On one hand, he's a very active presence on the offensive end, moving without the ball, asking for it, but rarely hogging it, staying aggressive to drive if he sees a good chance, running the court, feeding the open man, using his long-range stroke to get into a scoring flow, and usually taking good decisions (he can eventually become a bit anxious if his shots aren't falling). On the other hand, rebounds, loose balls, passing lanes, he prowls for any chance to gain a possession for his team.

By midseason our starting five could be:

Baron
Rudy
Jax
Garnett
Biedrins

You bring in Barnes, Arroyo, Kelenna, and Powell as needed for a little toughness, energy, and defensive intensity.

With Garnett in the post and Baron running the show, what you really need most out of your 2-3 is at least one lockdown defender and at least one deadly, lights-out shooter. Jax is the former, and Rudy definitely seems like the latter.

ridiculous...
is thinking cohan would be willing to pay garnett and baron a total of $40 per season for just the 2 of them!

by stedanko on May 24, 2007 9:16 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Richardson and Harrington
Make about $18M between them. Kevin Garnett's only making $4M more than that, and it's much shorter money. Add in the fact that we wouldn't have to worry about a pricy extension for Monta, and it may actually be a net financial relief for CC.

But by all means, call up Portland's front office and propose that Foyle/POB for Randolph trade. I'm sure they'll be extremely interested.

by sadleavy on May 25, 2007 3:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

much shorter money?
not really since we would have to sign kg PAST next season for it to be worth it to him or us to agree to any such move. if you REALLY think it is such a great move then think about the situation gsw will be in when kg is making $25+ million a year in 4 years?

baron will be making about $20 million or so by then too and we do not even know for sure he will be walking.

spending so much on those two players is asking for trouble.

by stedanko on May 25, 2007 5:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's risky to be sure
To contend for a championship, you gotta take a few risks.

And actually, I don't see how it would be that much riskier than sticking with our current roster. KG's proven himself to be one of the most durable players in the league, on top of all his other virtues. Baron's the iffy one, but it's not written in stone anywhere that we have to extend him. He's got two years left on his current deal; if his chronic injuries show no signs of abating, we can always let him walk (I mean, assuming he can still walk...) As it stands, I don't really like the idea of signing him to an extension at anywhere near the numbers people are throwing around.

I guess I'm not really sure what you're arguing. Are you saying you'd rather have Harrington and Richardson than Kevin Garnett?  Not saying that's a ridiculous stance; I guess I just lost track of the argument. At one point I thought we were discussing whether it was feasible to trade Foyle and POB to Portland for Zach Randolph.

why does J-Rich have the target on his back?
Seriously does everyone rather keep Monta over J-Rich?  I know he doesn't drive well but I'd rather keep him and trade Monta.

The Warriors don't want to take one step forward and two steps back.  J-Rich is a legit 3-pt shooter and he did average +20 when healthy for an entire season.

I say we try to keep J-Rich, BD and add KG to have a Big 3 with Jax to have a starting lineup averaging ~75 points.  Monta, P.O.B., Barnes, Al, and MP should be the sacrificial lambs.

whoa...
That's pushing it.  He just won MIP, but let's not ride his jock into dreamland over it.  Agent Zero is a TOP player in the entire league with a whole different skillset than Monta.

The only thing that makes Monta "Gilbert-esque" is that they're both 2nd round gems.

by ssmokinjoe on May 25, 2007 4:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why talk trade when we've got a solid
core? Let's keep it simple fellas. We did get to the 2nd round of the POs you know. Which means we're only a big or two away to make it to the finals. Why can't we just use the 18th and 2nd Rd picks wisely and grab athletic, rebound/defensive-minded bigs and a back-up true PG?

Really, if we had Milsap, we may have won the Jazz series.

We need a rebounder (a little offense is a plus) to relieve AB. Oftentimes the Ws subbed in Al for AB and we know this didn't work.

Now, I'm not gonna say that I did my homework on these PFs but perhaps the Ws mgmt may know more about these guys:

Sean Williams 6-10 235 PF BC Jr.
We all know what he can do.

Herbert Hill 6-10 240 PF Providence Sr.
NBADraft compares him to Long John Salley

  • Shows good mobility, running the court with ease
  • Possesses great hands, capable of catching most passes without fumbling or losing control of the ball (anti-Foyle)
  • Solid rebounder who uses his long arms and hands to tip balls out of position to himself (reminds me of Beans)
  • Solid finisher where he wastes little time, keeps the ball high and goes right up
  • For his size he shows above average lateral movement which enables him to make an impact as a very good help defender on the weak side of the court
  • Offensively Hill has a very good jump hook that he converts from a multitude of angles
  • What makes this even more impressive is that Hill will adjust his release on his shot depending on his defender's position
  • Surprisingly an excellent post passer possessing the court vision to hit cutters or pass to the open shooter (hello Nellie Ball)
  • Shows quality shot blocking ability due to his long arms and top notch timing
  • Does a good job of absorbing contact in the lane and finishing the play for free throw opportunities
  • Plays solid post defense with good intensity and constantly works to keep himself between his man and the basket
  • Has shown signs of an emerging face-up game as Hill now hits shots from 12 feet out (something Beans can't do - YET!)
  • Approaches the game with a blue collar attitude (a la Milsap), with no problem doing the dirty work
  • Work ethic has been applauded by many throughout his 5 years in college (NICE)
Weaknesses: below avg FT shooter...yikes!

Jermareo Davidson 6-10 220 PF Ala. Sr.

  • has an impressive package of mobility and leaping ability
  • he runs the court like a guard, able to keep up on fast breaks
  • Has shown the ability to hit the mid-range jumper out to 18 feet from the basket
  • Decent ball handler able to catch the ball (anti-Adonal)
  • Defensively Davidson shows quality shot blocking ability as his timing, long arms and quickness enable him to disrupt shots
  • Long arms and mobility allow for him to be an excellent out of position rebounder ... - Mental toughness and focus have been tested this year as he has endured a series of personal tragedies off the court
  • Quality finisher around the basket due to his athleticism which allows him to finish with flair (will rock the big Oracle)
  • Great help defender who's mobility allows him to make his presence felt from the weak side
Negatives include strength, gives up positioning on the defensive end easily (YUCK), gets out-muscled easily for rebounding position (OUCH), and other minor ones.

However, anyone can weight train to gain strength and mass.

Carl Landry 6-9 235 PF Purdue Sr.
Strengths: Shows good mobility running the court

  • Tough nosed player who fights hard every game
  • Post footwork, shooting touch and soft hands enable him to convert most opportunities in the paint
  • Offensively Landry is crafty as he will use a number of fakes to get his defender off balance and draw fouls
  • Back to the basket skills are quite advanced, displays a nice jump hook and turnaround jumper
  • Shows mid range shooting ability from 14-16 feet that he makes with regularity
  • Underrated post passer who is unselfish and sees the floor well
  • Quality rebounder in his area
  • Fundamentally sound as he understands how to read where the ball will go on missed shots when boxing out
  • Upper body strength enables him to finish after contact occurs
  • Basketball IQ is solid as Landry understands what his strengths are on the court and rarely goes outside of his comfort range ...
REMINDS ME KIND OF LIKE IKE...

Weanesses: height...then again Milsap is only 6'8".

Ali Traore 6-9 239 PF France 1985
Ronny Turiaf Part Deux???
Strengths: Traore is a solid athlete with good quickness and leaping ability

  • Mobility is excellent for a player his size
  • Has the body to continue to put on weight comfortably and not lose any athletic ability
  • Ball handling ability is solid as it's not uncommon for him to gather the ball from the top of the key and take his man off the dribble (hello Al Harrington)
  • Fundamentally he understands how the value of keeping the ball high in the post
  • Possesses good hands enabling him to catch most passes with few problems (ahem Adonal)
  • Rebounding potential is excellent as he is able to box out well as well as snare balls out of position
  • Shows good touch around the basket as he is able to finish with both hands (ahem Al)
  • Excellent finisher around the basket where he excels at catching passes off dishes from guards (can we say Nellie ball?)
  • Uses his quickness well for fast execution in the post
  • Physically Traore has many of the qualities of a quality shot blocker with a long wingspan and quick leaping ability
  • Body control is superb for a player his size ... Overall potential is impressive ...
Weakness: tends to lose confidence and focus (uh-oh), foul-prone, not a great shot-blocker.

Ryvon Covile 6-9 250 PF Detroit Sr.
Don't know much about him but he did avg 10.6 rebs last year in a not so challenging conference...maybe he could help???

Any thoughts? Attacks are welcome!

Draft
Ask any GM "do you draft for need?" and he'll tell you you draft the best available player, you trade for need.

by Psion on May 26, 2007 1:24 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

If only we heeded those words...
You'd think after drafting Joe Smith over Kevin Garnett, we wouldn't draft Todd Fuller over Kobe Bryant.

You'd think after drafting Todd Fuller over Kobe Bryant, we wouldn't draft Adonal Foyle over Tracy McGrady (the next year!)

You'd think, as recently as last year, after seeing how our shortsighted "draft a big man" mentality had repeatedly f---ed up our franchise, we wouldn't draft a stiff like POB over Rodney Carney.

We may end up reaping the bitter harvest of last year's draft this off season. Right now we only have four legit trading chips: JRich, Monta, and Harrington, and AB. The front office has shown no real inclination to deal JRich, AB, or Monta. POB has precisely zero trade value. Carney, a very intriguing young talent, might have been the missing asset we could have used to deal for a guy like Artest, Wallace, Warrick, or even KG.

by Sleepy Freud on May 26, 2007 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But the problem in this year's draft is
the Ws have enuff non-bigs that are good. Most of the "best available players" in the late 1st round to the 2nd round are smaller players. This is why the Ws should go for need: draft bigs that could help. In the past drafts, they picked 4 bigs (AB, Ike, Kosta and POB). We were fortunate enuff to have a big in AB to actually help the team. So I guess we can keep drafting for bigs hoping at least one turns out well. This way, we don't lose any of our core players. Remember, most likely, we can't maintain a winning atmosphere by having a revolving-door. See the better teams (SA and Detroit).

high schoolers
I think we were scared away from those three trades because they were high schoolers. I really thought we were going to draft Garnett, man was I really bummed. Then Joe Smith sucked and I was pissed.

by Psion on May 26, 2007 3:21 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Why not artest
This KG fantasy may not happen, so why not get somone that we dont have to give up much for.  Ron Artest is perfect.  We have a headcase already in Stephen Jack, trade him and Adonal Foyle for Artest and a good defender in Kenny Thomas.  Artest is a better player but more of a headcase.  Nellie can handle these kind of players.  Artest just needs to stay out of trouble and we'll be in the finals in no time.
