Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

I'm Curious! If the Ws keep their pick at 18...

who does all the various NBA Mock Drafts have the Warriors taking?

If Mully doesn't trade the pick or move up higher in the draft, who does Nellie/Mully pick if the Ws stand pat?  Is this a deep draft?  Can Nellie provide input into helping Mully pull a star  this late in the first round?  I remember Nellie picking Sprewell in the 24th spot years ago. Mully picked up Monte in the 2nd round and Biedrins at 11.  The Ws could conceivably get lucky like when they picked Gilbert Arenas in the 2nd round.

well...
i have said all along all the crazy trade talk is a little much. i for one would like to see what comes along in the draft before we start breaking this core up. i wrote a diary a couple weeks ago mentioning gilbert, paul milsap, monta and boozer all were second round picks. everyone is also talking about how deep this draft is so i really feel like the dubs can get good value at 18 and probably be able to fill the need for a rebounder with either or both of their picks.

The salary cap
will play a roll in our decision.  If we cannot dump cabbages/foyle/POB's contract(s) or aren't overly impressed with our options then the pick could be traded for a first next year.

Hopefully excess contracts will be moved and the warriors can find a forward who can rebound.

the cap and picks.
NBA rules dictate that you have to have at least 13 players under contract and 12 on your active roster.  You can very briefly be down to 11 while making moves, but you can't do this for long.  Even if Barnes comes back, Pietrus comes back and Cabbages returns, the Warriors would stand at 11 contracts and would need to pick up someone by league rules.  They have options then of signing someone at the NBA minimum or MLE, though keeping Barnes very likely means using the MLE for him.  They can also sign a draft pick.  The #18 pick is just a touch over the vet minimum salary, so in terms of the salary hit, it's not all that much different from passing on it to add a vet on a one year deal.

thanks
i wasn't sure how much the #18 pick made but in that case i'd only trade it to dump salary (Foyle) or as part of a package to get a starting 4. but i don't see that happening.

No reason to move the pick
There will be tons of great value at 18 in this exceptionally deep draft.  We will be able to get a quality player at 18.   Love to see us get thad young, nick young, j. crittenton, or fernandez here.  I think it is crazy to trade the pick when we have the oppurtunity to get a very good player in this draft.  We cannot trade out of this draft, it's simply too deep.

Probably no Thad Young
I've read that he plans on going back to college unless he gets a top-15 guarantee. But maybe we'll luck into him.

I think it'd be great to stay in this draft, but if packaging the pick along with some current contracts (signed/traded Pietrus, Jasikev, etc) for that elusive rebounding big-man we covet is a possibility, then I say go for it. Deep draft, lots of talent, but on the mocks I just don't see anybody that fits the bill. Unless, of course, we lose both Barnes and Pietrus--then we need to draft a replacement, and thankfully there appears to be that type of player at #18.

Do we have two 2nd round picks?
I'm just wondering about that trade with New Jersey involving Cliff Robinson. Since we traded him there, we get their 2nd round pick this year, right? With that being said, we should have two 2nd rounders. Our first 2nd rounder is from the Marc Jackson trade with Minnesota. Just want clarification.

Joey Dorsey
Did he declare for the draft?  If he did, then we should take him in the 2nd round.  That dude is a beast on defense, and he would solve our rebounding problem as well as intimidate anyone driving to the lane.

That guy is the second coming of Ben Wallace...bad free throws and all.

Not coming to NBA this year
Joey Dorsey decided to stay in school.

I agree that he could be Big Ben all over again. They're almost the exact same size. All he needs is Ben's desire.

Warriors prospects: Splitter, Smith, and Young
I've put out a weekly mock draft with HOOPSWORLD for the last few weeks and I think the best thing for the Dubs would be taking Tiago Splitter or Jason Smith. Both of them are big guys that can board and run. Splitter's stock fell after the Euroleague Final Four, so he might be available. Depending on what the Nets or Wizards do in trades, they might take Smith.

If they're both off the board, the Dubs should look to package the pick with a player and make a move on someone or they should just take Nick Young to basically replace MP2.

With a 2nd round pick
I want the Warriors to go out and try to get Sean Williams out of Boston College.  The man is simply a BEAST, averaging FIVE blocks a game. He also gets out on the fast break.

The reason he's likely to drop so far down in the draft is because he got kicked off the team once for bad grades and some say he lacks work ethic / focus.  But wth anyway, this is a second round pick, we should gamble with it and maybe we'll get lucky like we did with Monta.

no way williams in the second
i would love for that to happen but no way he falls that far....if the w's picked him in the first round i wouldn't even be mad

I wouldn't be mad either
If the Dubs got Williams in the first round.  But it seems like everyone else only cares about offense

Fits perfectly
I think this guy is the perfect fit for the dubs.  He plays excellent defense and rebounds fairly well.  Although he had some problems with his work ethic and what not, I bet our players and arena will get him to change his mind.  Although the downside of picking him is if Nelson doesn't like him.  Nellie has a very short leash on players, but then again he didn't bench Jackson when he blew up or kept taking horrible shots in the Utah series.

This guy could be our Amare where all he does is dunk on fools.  This guy has some major hops, and I can see him running the floor to make Sportscenter's Top 10.

2nd rounder Lee Humphrey
I hope for one of the 2nd rounders Mully grabs that sharpshooter Lee Humphrey from the NCAA championship Gators.  This guy doesn't miss from downtown even in big games!  He would instantly be the Ws best shooter and could compete with Mully in a 3pt  contest.  I think he's a tough SOB too.

I like some of the suggestions for keeping the 18th pick. Just don't know what Mully/Nellie have up their sleeves.

making the team better
If the goal is to provide immediate impact to the team, I doubt any of the bigger players will help.  Williams and Splitter are intriguing, but honestly, the reason guys over 6-10 last past the first few picks is usually because they're flawed.  Yeah, we got Biedrins at 11 and other teams have gotten good bigmen later in the draft too, but if you want to play odds, it doesn't look good.  It's not even like it's a matter of getting a reasonable sub, but most of the guys just can't get off the bench and are paid for their rookie contracts to model size XXXXXL warmups.

On the other hand, the success rate of guards later in the draft is much better.  Stars?  Not often, but quality contributors show up regulary in the latter half of the draft.

Baron was a key for the Warriors (36-27 with him; 6-15 without) and we knew he was fragile.  Yeah, Nelson says he wants to keep his minutes down next year, but he said that this year and then couldn't help himself because there wasn't much of an option to really direct an offense other than, er, uh, umm...who was that backup guard?

A backup point guard who could have come in and played 10 to 15 minutes a game early in the season, ramped up to 15-20 as the season progressed and they learned the game (ala Marcus Williams or Jordan Farmar last year) would have kept Baron's minutes down, moreso as he tired through the season too.  No, picking for a guy who will likely be a career backup ain't terribly exciting, but it's what's usually available then and those guys do, over the course of the season, help win games, if only by keeping the starters healthy.

My Draft Picks
No. 18: Rudy Fernandez (SG)
No. 36: Dominic McGuire (SF)
No. 46: Carl Landry (PF)

I'd go with the best available athlete first, then address our needs in the second round. We're a lot better off in landing a quality role player in free agency or even acquiring a decent low post defender/presence via trade. Rudy Fernandez will prove to be our replacement for Mickael Pietrus if we let him go. Dominic McGuire will replace Matt Barnes if we let him go or decide not to pay him a lot of money. Carl Landry will become our sleeper. Just looking at his running ability for his size, he will get some playing time in Nellie's offense. I would also consider gunning for a good available PG if Acie Law were to fall onto our laps at the 18 spot. If we even get lucky to get Thaddeus Young, I'd go for it.
