Don Nelson on 48 minutes

Sometimes, I don't really understand what Nellie's thinking. He gave Pietrus and Harrington chances after struggling, why not Monta. That's one of the problems I have with Nelson. He doesn't give the opportunity to certain players who are struggling. It's confusing and stupid when I see Pietrus struggle and not show up for two whole games in the Dallas series, and then suddenly Nellie gives him pt to step up in the third game. From what I remember, Monta played mediocre, but not that poor. Monta played a big role on how we got here and now Nelson won't give the kid any chance. If we lose the next game, and Monta gets the same number of opportunities that he got last game, which was none, than I will personally go to the Oracle and chant We want Monta! We want Monta! It would be really sad if he will get Foyle minutes throughout the series.

Secondly, Al Harrington only played 12 minutes in  the 2nd half. WTF Nellie. This guy came up huge for us in the 1st half and kept us in the game. If Nelson gave Harrington more minutes in the 4th, then we had a great chance to put them away with our 5 point lead. This is another problem I have with Neillie. He doesn't always make the right decision as far as giving his players the right amount of playing time to help this team succeed. If Monta and Al played more that game, We might be talking a W instead of an L. Someone really needs to tell Nelson that it's alright to rest Jackson and Barnes. It's not like their the only ones that have been big for us throughout the season. Resting players and giving them a break is very important, especially in a best of seven series. Had Barnes maybe took a breather more, maybe he would have got that rebound that could have won us the game. But now, we're down 0-1.

Memo to Nellie- Take this into consideration. Remember Chris Webber. And yea, remember what happened to this team and the organization after u traded him. Well, Can u please tell me what your doing with Monta Ellis. I remember when he subbed in for Baron Davis, and u could see his face of disgust and disappointment. I'm not saying that Monta has a Chris Webber attitude. But come on! DO U WANT THAT TO HAPPEN TO UR ASS AGAIN?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

On Harrington...
He was in foul trouble by the 3rd quarter, at his rate; he would have fouled out by the beginning of the 4th quarter.

Harrington
Harrington only had 4 and it was past the 4 minute mark in the 4th till he got back from the game. Nelson lets Richardson, Jackson, and Daivs play with three fouls in the 2nd quarter.

if monta were able to
step up and finish his lay up or at least make some plays instead of turning the ball over and being inconsistent, then maybe he would get some burn!  this is the playoffs!  we dont look down the bench for who can help us win, but we look at who's on the court who will help us win.  so as long as Monta doesnt come up big then we need someone else to step up.

Bottom Line
is that Nellie needs someone to spell Baron - he looked tired out there on one leg. Monta needs to step it up so that Baron can get some rest. I guarantee you that if he didn't look lost on the defensive end and merely didn't turn the ball over he would get more run.

Don't Get Carried Away
Your post raises some interesting points and observations but makes a really big leap at the end bringing up Webber.  I think you got more than a little carried away.

Here are my problems with your thoughtful post:  1.  Nellie has a much better sense of who should be playing than we do; 2.  He operates on years of experience and his own intuition and trust issues in the moment; 3.  We have no idea how Monta or Harrington would have done if they had played so the outcome is anything but clear--you just can't say having them in would have created a more favorable outcome; 4. In my opinion (and others from what I've read so far) the game was lost on mindless turnovers and the lack of defensive desire to pound the boards.  Monta would presumably have had no positive impact in those two areas since he is careless with the ball on offense and is not a rebounder, per se.  And it is also clear Harrington's major flaw is his lack of defensive desire and unwillingness to rebound.  Strange and as off point as it may sound, we might have been better off with Murphy, obviously without his little sister around.

I just don't understand why folks are so down on the team and Nelson.  We never rated to win this game based on Utah's overall record, record at home, match-ups, and our record on the road.  It is a major credit to the team and coaches that we came as close as we did.  I am not saying the game was actually not winable and we will see if we can learn from our mistakes.  It was a hell of a game and I am looking forward to seeing what will happen on Wednesday.

as long as you bring up Murphleavy
I just wanted to reiterate that Tim Hardaway would have "hated" being on the same team as those two! I mean he straight up said, ""I don't like MURPHLEAVY and I don't like to be around MURPHLEAVY. I don't like it. They shouldn't be in the world or in the United States."

i third that emotion
nellie: the master motivator

he brought us here with tape, paper clips, string and whatnot.  the dubs are the national darling and they regularly play with four guards and a forward.

that said, i agree with the need for monta to feel good about basketball again.  how we get there, though...now that is the trick.  only monta has the answer.

Geez
One game and you're second guessing everything the Don did?  Show a little bit of faith and at LEAST wait until the end of game 2 before you move to impeach the man that brought us into the 2nd round of the playoffs after not being there since I was going through puberty.

Monta plays terrible D
as does Harrington at times. I remember seeing Harrington get chewed out on the sideline at least twice after fouls were committed. Pietrus meanwhile bring solid D night in night out, and unfortunately compliments that with a lot of bonehead moves.

But hey, I understand your frustration. I feel like we lost the game on the boards, and in all honesty I think Ellis and Harrington attack the boards better than Baron and Jackson at times. We'll see what happens Wednesday; the series isn't anywhere close to over. Remember, they're SUPPOSED to win at home. We just have to win 1/4 there, because we know we own them at home.

Monta
at this point doesn't give you much more than scoring so if that isn't happening why play him

Harrington is a big body and Peitrus as dumb as he is can board and play some man to man defense

Monta looks lost out there on the court
and in the playoffs, minor mistakes are magnified and VERY costly. Possessions have to be cherished. When Monta is out there, every time he brings the ball up-- I shiver with fear, because he often times forces the entry pass that isnt there. He is always missing defensive-rotations, you always see him looking at Nellie to tell him what to do... while his defensive assignment curls around a screen for a wide open layup. The reason Nellie didn't keep Monta in is for defensive purposes... he just doesn't seem to understand the defensive scheme Nellie developed for the playoffs.

I agree
Just as I said earlier its obviously for defensive reasons. But you make a good point - that is that Monta just doesn't grasp the defensive schemes that Nelson is trying to employ. Has anyone listened to Monta speak - he isn't the brightest star in the sky.

by triplesix on May 8, 2007 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

in hindsight
Monta should've gone to college. This would've helped him in learning more complicated offensive/defensive schemes at the college level that would've prepared him better for the pros. He would've became a college star. Maybe even just one year and he would be able to contribute more than he can now. He would probably be a lottery pick had he gone to college meaning he probably wouldn't be on the Warriors if he went to college... good thing he's young and still has time to learn the pro game.

Monta lost out there?
and the playoffs is not a good time to be working this out! Nelson had all season to integrate monta into the scheme and half a season to get powell involved. A deeper bench woulda  been worth any effort invested in them, now we're sufferin for it.

by Skeptic con Urquell on May 8, 2007 12:58 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nellie had to develop new schemes for the
playoffs, as do most coaches. What, did you think their defensive scheme against the Mavs was what they did during the regular season? No way. Players had to learn when to double Dirk and how to rotate when Dirk was doubled, and that is only ONE issue. Dee Brown looked more composed out there on the court than Monta did last night.

People really need to stop criticizing Nellie, he has more NBA coaching experience than everyone on this blog combined. Without him we wouldn't even be in the playoffs, I trust Nellie in everything he does. Nellie has a reason for everything, just because he isn't doing  something some of you like (like benching Monta) doesn't mean he's screwing up. Nellie is known for not trusting young players because they don't have enough experience & knowledge of the game at a pro level to do the things Nellie expects from his players.

People also need to remember that Monta is two years out of high school and never got to learn complicated game schemes. Not to mention Monta is two years older than he should be for being a draftee out of high school. He graduated from high school at 19; and you can tell by the way he responds in interviews and the depth/complexity of the things he says, that he isn't the brightest apple in the bushel.

should be blaming Monta for not being able to play, not Nellie. Nellie has done NOTHING wrong.

Nellie has done NOTHING wrong
But apparently he dint watch the end of the rockets/jazz game 7 ?    If he did we'd have won game one!  Match ups and theory are fine on paper but sometimes you gotta look around and recognize what's happening. Maybe they need to assign an assistant coach to monitor the TV broadcast?

by Skeptic con Urquell on May 8, 2007 1:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

hey, the guy had to pay the bills
and i don't know if you can judge a kid's intelligence by a tv interview.  he's a young guy who grew up poor in birmingham, alabama, not well-educated, certainly, but i see him doing a lot of smart things.  he's got family with him in the bay, he keeps his head down, he's developing nicely.  we don't need to make big statements about monta's career trajectory in terms of analyzing these playoffs.  he's a kid.  who knows, if we get the right matchups in this series or the next one, he may take off yet.

by OaktownWarrior on May 8, 2007 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Monta, isn't the brightest apple in the bushel.
Which means absolutly nothing playin ball. John Rocker, Kenny Rogers and Timmy Hardway have proven that! It's a game of instinct and Monta has that, it's coaches job to figure out how to help him succeed. Monta is monta, we gotta figure out how to use him to our advantage.

by Skeptic con Urquell on May 8, 2007 1:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

uhh....
intelligence is almost 90% of the game. At a pro-level everyone can ball talent-wise, otherwise they wouldn't  be there. But it is necessary that players are able to understand complex schemes. For example, Stromile Swift has TONS of athletic ability/talent but he couldn't learn and understand JVG's system to save his life, thats why he is no longer there. You think Phil Jackson's triangle offense requires no intelligence to learn? It has got to be the most complicated system in all of the NBA.

And it's the coaches job to put Monta in a position to succeed, and there is no other system that would be better suited to help Monta succeed than in Nellie's system, since Monta is an undersized SG and all. Perhaps benching him IS how the GSW are using him to their advantage, because most of the time when he was on the floor against the Mavs, he was killing us with his numerous mistakes. This is the playoffs and the opposition will capitalize on every mistake, Monta makes way too many mistakes out there for him to be in an advantageous position in the gameplan.

Marv Albert: "I ain't trippin'!"

by ZombieWarrior on May 8, 2007 2:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

btw
if those of you that are so desperate to see Monta get sufficient minutes, brace yourselves to see a loss if that happens. Utah is too good and will capitalize on their size against the Warriors. Baron needs to be on the floor for the full 48 minutes and we need as much size as we can get to help with rebounding. Having Monta in the lineup at the same time as Baron is a severe disadvantage to the Warriors because they lose that rebounding ability... even blocking ability, that Barnes/Pietrus bring when they are on the floor. Yes, I know Monta has hops but he wouldn't be able to box out anyone on the Utah front-line to save his life.

Whoa Nellie
Let's not forget that if Jackson's 3 is a few inches to the left, we're up 1 with 7 seconds to go instead of parying for some missed free-throws. Hardly grounds for much second guessing in terms of strategy or game-plan. When you're on the road in the playoffs, putting yourself in position to win the game in the end with solid execution is as much as you can typically ask for, and they got that but just couldn't quite seal the deal, so there has to be plenty to be pleased with, all things considered.

Moral victories don't count for squat!  Lose by 3 or lose by 20? i'd rather lose by 20 and rest the starters the whole 4th quarter. Bottom line is we had it in the bag and let it get away. You can be happy if you want but I'm pissed!

WOW ARE WE ALL REALLY THAT STUPID
OK first if it wasn't for Nelly and his great game plan no one would be complaining about last night cause Dallas would be playing Utah right now, so for someone to blame him because as a team we were careless with the ball, slow to rotate to the open 3 point shooter and non-existent (except J-Rich and Barnes) on the boards is just STUPID.  We lost a game that if we were in Oakland we would've won by at least 7-10 points.

Also if we weren't careless with the ball, I personally think hte turning point was when we were up 7 with the ball and Barnes decided to hand the ball to Deron Williams for a dunk the other way, we would've won.  If we score on that possesion and go up 9 or 10 instead of them cutting it to 5 we're not having this conversation...

BOTTOMLINE LEAVE NELLIE ALONE.....He's about the most untouchable sports figure in the bay right now.

The buck stops at the top, Enron, Iraq war, NBA playoffs. The boss is in charge so he gets the blame. If the players aren't doing what he wants then that's his problem to fix.
This game was at Utah, If we can only win in oakland then we might as well quit now and start the summer.Remember( in my best Allan Iverson impression) we're talkin about Utah here, Utah, not oakland, we're talkin about utah. etc. etc.
With Nellie you get flashes of brilliance and periods of gloom. Those of us who've already gone thru the "Nellie" thing know this, you new guys will find out eventually.

man
you guys are hard on Monta. How many times this season did he save us? How about the game-winning shot? His confidence is low right now. Thats what I see the biggest problem being. Don't expect it to last. He has also been shuffled in and out of the starting lineups, and asked to do a lot of things this year, most of which he has done great. Lay off the kid!

WE BELIEVE FOR THE MOST PART
...unless we come inches away from winning in our first attempt on the road, at which point the foundation quakes. Whatever Nellie was thinking, as referenced in the genesis of the thread, couldn't have been very far off the mark. Only as far off as Jackson's miss with 7-ish left on the clock.

by Tender Rony on May 8, 2007 7:51 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Now question.....
Name me a coach could do what he did this season?
waiting.....waiting....
I thought so!

for the record: I still want Mario Elie to coach this team eventually, but I will never ever bash Nellie while he's coaching this team.  And yes I didnt bash nellie during the Webber fiasco, (only after he went to the Knicks)
