Rumor: Warriors Talked to a Division Rival about Trading Jason Richardson

Chris Mullin might be taking a bold public stance that Jason Richardson is not on the trading block, but the JRich rumor mill just won't die. Check out these lines from Janny Hu's piece In Warriors' world, great minds think alike for SFGate today:

Warriors' upstarts Andris Biedrins and Monta Ellis will be up for big money soon and Baron Davis wants an extension. But the Mullin-Nelson dynamic may ultimately be decided by the fate of Jason Richardson, a Mullin favorite who had an uneven and injury-filled first year under Nelson.

Mullin has publicly said he will not trade Richardson, but a league source indicated that Golden State has had exploratory conversations with at least one team, including a division rival, about moving the sixth-year guard.

I'd really hate to see the Warriors trade Jason Richardson especially if it's just to trim the team's payroll. I've said it before and I'll say it again: You don't open up cap space by trading away guys like JRich. You open up cap space to sign guys like JRich. I could care less if the .077 batting average Chris Cohan saves some money. In fact I'd rather all that green than Warriors Nation channels to his wallet go to Jason instead.

It's especially interesting that this league source has stated the Warriors have talked with a division rival about a JRich trade. Going down the list:

  • Phoenix Suns: JRich would be great fit here, but the Suns would probably have to part with Shawn Marion or Amare Stoudemire. There's no way new Suns' GM Steve Kerr is that dumb.
  • LA Lakers: I can't really see JRich and Kobe Bryant playing well together. Unless the Fakers are actually going to trade Kobe... muhahahaha!
  • LA Clippers: Aside from Elton Brand (which ain't happening) is there really anyone on this roster you'd trade JR for? Didn't think so.
  • Sacramento Kings: Aside from a package with Ron Artest and the #10 draft pick there's pretty much no trade that makes sense for the Warriors hoops-wise. I can't see anything happening here and if something goes down with Sacrapmento we'll all have painful Mitch Richmond for Billy Owens flashbacks for awhile.

Are there any realistic Jason Richardson trades with any of these Pacific Division foes that make sense? Post them in the comments.

Maggette
...if there was a way to make the salaries work out. Offensively, he seems like he's got it all: likes to drive, can hit the three, AND his free throws. But would we be duplicating players with Maggette AND Jax?

erp
But the locker room cancer he provides would prove to be scary for me. Jason's most valuable asset is his team player qualities.

I'm thinking it was the suns, for Marion. Which I'd have to do.

I think MAggette is a much better player then JAX
HE is more consistent a better ball handler and less of a freak show. But he does do some of the same things although MAggette shoots ALOT of free throws which really helps in close games because he makes a very high percentage

Maggs and Jax--not really similar.
Maggette and Jax are very different in what they do for your team.  Jax can score and showed the ability to distribute when Nelson specifically told him to do it.  He can also be a pest on defense.  But for a guy 6-8, he's a pathetic rebounder.  Actually, he wouldn't be much of a rebounder for a guy 5-8.   Maggs owns him in this regard and if the Warriors go small, he may be a better option.  Maggs also gets to the line much more often and shoots a better percentage from the field.  These are both important differences.

Of course if the thing you're looking at is the rebounds and higher FG% than jax, it's the same thing that Richardson brings that the other wing players don't, so a move for Maggette would have to be in part shedding salary in the long haul.

Watching the games this year
during the important playoff stretch he had one offense in mind, drive to the hole without intending to make the basket and then shoot FT's off the most generous whistle in the league.

I'd think he'd get a worse rep on the Warriors and not get those same calls.

Also all year long he was a sort of locker room cancer, behind the scenes nutcase in that regard.

At least as crazy as Jax is, he's still a good teammate and the guy you want in the locker room.

They needed to trade this guy and nobody took the bait. Taking on Jax was 50/50 but even if he didn't work out the Warriors cut salary pretty well.

Trade this guy
meaning Maggette.

Jax was sort of the same deal also for Indiana but he worked out well.

man
is j-rich so undervalued on this site that people are willing to trade him for maggette? i hate maggette's game, not to mention his attitude. that would be a bad trade imo

you hate his game?
Ha what do you hate about it? How he shotts freethrows at 90%. How he drives almost evertime and doesnt settle for the outside shot. His defense? What is it?

Maggette is a horrible 3pt shooter.
Nellie would never play at the 2 or 3.

If you are saying what I think you are saying,
then nelson wouldnt play baron either because he is also a horrible three point shooter

marion
it would take more than j-rich to get him, wouldn't it? I do think that playing with Nash has maybe inflated matrix's value slightly, but still one would have to assume he has a bit more value than J-rich. nonetheless, I'd be fired up if we got our hands on marion.

J-Rich and Cabbage
for Artest and Shareef would be a great trade

Artest and Shareef would be a great trade?
Woulda been four years ago but not now,  Shareef is ready to draw social security and Ronron is close behind. Artest would be a good addition but not for Jason, maybe for Barnes?

i wouldn't
trade Jrich to any Pacific team. he'd come back and torch us 4 times a year. But on the other hand say...Charlotte, now there's a team that has parts we could use. We trade Jrich to the Cats' for Sean May, Brevin Knight and their 8th overall and we have ourselved a deal. I'd only trade Jrich if we could get into the top 10 in this year's draft. Only Sac has a top 10 pick, but they still have no one we would want. I'd hate bringing in Ron ron.

top 10 might be nice, but
i might also trade jrich if it means getting rid of foyle's bloated contract.

a trade for marion would help defensively
and I love Maggette that would be a good move.

by dallaswarrior on Jun 24, 2007 5:43 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

how about Rasheed Lewis
His salary is a match with Richardson's.  With Durant a lock to be drafted, perhaps a player of J-Rich's skills, heart and talent would be a great  fit.  That would be win-win except it creates no salary savings to deal with our eventual problem of extending AB and Monta.

A second thought would be Zach Randolf.  He makes 12 mil a year so throwing in Cabbage would be pretty sweet.

Who would you prefer?

rasheed lewis?
you meant Rashard right? Unless there's some amazing hybrid player that came of Rasheed Wallace and Rashard Lewis
Ronald Reagan was a jerk.

addendum
by the way, I know the question dealt with our division and not conference, but perhaps the rumor was off by just a little.  Otherwise I don't see how it flies with any of our divison rivals.  But within our conference it might make sense.

How about Marcus Camby
Jason Richardson & the 18th pick
for
Marcus Camby & Reggie Evans

The Nuggets have a logjam at the PF/C positions, and Camby is 33. But he was the defensive player of the year last year. Nuggets get younger and Warriors get better next year. It's not a coup either way, which is why it makes some sense.

Also, Sarunas Jasikevicius straight up for Ira Newble. He and Foyle can talk politics on the bench.

She's dead on
It is a division rival. I'd get in trouble if I mentioned it, but you guys can figure it out: think .. expiring contracts ..

Sorry I can't give you more - the other team is very strict for credentials, and I've been slapped on the wrist once before (I was banned for a year!)

Hmmmmm
Could it be..

Maggette + Shaun Livingston's expiring contract?

I kinda like that.  "Stats-wise" Maggette is pretty much as productive as Jrich (worse jumper but better freethrow shooting), plus his contract only has a year left with an opt-out clause and his contract is reasonable at $8mil.  Team chemistry problems though?  Maybe a change of scenery would be good for him.
Shaun Livingston's contract would be nice to shed $4.4mil next offseason, or if he does make a miraculous comeback he'd be a nice successor to Baron in the long run.

Or could it be..

To the Lakers for Kwame Brown's expiring $9mil contract?

I guess this could work if/when Kobe gets traded.    I dunno how well Kwame would fair on the Warriors for a year tho.  I'm in LA and I watch him play alot, he seems too lazy to run up and down the court at a high tempo.  Plus MJ said he "has no heart".  The saving $9mil part does sound nice though.

If it is as pree said...
"Expiring Contracts" the it is with the clips, they only have 3 guys with 3 or more years remaining on their contracts. So we would swing a deal for maggette and possibly cassel. It works if we put rooney in. It works on real gm
