Kosta and POB

Recently, in the chronicle, it has been said that Kosta is a candidate from Europe that might be joining the Warriors this year. But there's no guaranteed that he will join the dubbs. There are things that the warriors can benefit from him, but there are things that he lacks. Kosta shoots a high percentage from the floor and he has very good defense. But his range isn't all that impressive, and one thing that Warriors need is rebounding and he wouldn't be able to be the dominant rebounder that we need.

Also, Don Nelson said that he will be expecting more from Patrick O'Bryant next season, and he will be expecting POB to spend much less time in the development league. Is POB worth the time and money to train?

This FanPost is a submission from a member of the mighty Golden State of Mind community. While we're all here to throw up that W, these words do not necessarily reflect the views of the GSoM Crew. Still, chances are the preceding post is Unstoppable Baby!

POB
Yeah I still believe POB deserves a chance.  It isn't like he totally tanked in the D-League either, he was 3rd in rebounds/48min and 3rd in blocks/48min, and with 51%fg and 79%ft.

No, he didn't dominate.  But having him at backup center is better than having nobody at backup center (or Foyle).

even
mullin said he was aware that he was getting a project from o'bryant. He said that big men take around 3 years to develop and it's only been 1.

more like 300 years.
Mullin was wrong.  There's no evidence that there's a curve of development where big men improve at such a rate. Big men don't take 3 years to develop as often as total flops remain total flops.  Most of the time, they never develop.

Haha
Yeah, I'm starting to think that the idea that big men take longer to develope was started by GM's who needed to buy time to make other moves to make everyone forget that they drafted a bust. I can only think of a couple of guys that started off looking like a bust and ended up an All-Star (Jermaine O'Neal for instance).

O'neal
Even O'Neal showed promise.

His per minute stats his first few years in Portland actually suggested he could be the player he is.  His scoring wasn't as high, but scoring doesn't scale all that well.  His shooting percentage though was more or less what it was later, he rebounded per minute more or less exactly like he does now, and he got to the FT line more or less at the same rate he does now.  Per minute, he was a similar shot blocker, had a similar (reasonably low) number of turnovers.

His scoring average (which is more volatile and has much to do with your teammates) and assists have increased, and, like many young players, he was a bit more foul prone but other than that, it really looks like he just didn't get the chance to put up numbers, not that he failed when he tried.

Good points statmaster!
I didn't reallize he was that effective in his limited minutes. I guess when I think of him on the Blazers all I can remember was him sitting on the bench with a sad look on his face.

they pretty much have no choice.
they're going to prepare for the '08-'09 salary dilemma and aren't likely to take on any additional contracts for that yr. (outside of those for their rookies for this year, '07, & next year, '08)

barring any player movement,
it's BD, JR, Jax, Al, AB
and Roony, Monta, #18, Foyle, POB, Kosta, #36, #46.

if powell & azubuike are willing to resign for 1 yr deals, then they'll be added to the 15 man roster. otherwise replace these 2 w/ 2 d-leaguers.

1 minute man
remember when AB was getting criticized for fouling to much he took 3 years to play at his current level lets wait for POB to get better

AB vs. POB, no comparison
There's really no comparison between POB's first year and Biedrins.  Biedrins was much, much better much, much earlier on.

AB had to cut down on his fouls, but if you really looked at what he did, that was the ONLY thing that kept him from actually making an impact.  But he hit his shots from the field, didn't drop passes and rebounded very well.  And when he was in games in his first two seasons, the Warriors performed well.  He was a big plus in +/-.  He just couldn't stay on the court long enough for it to make enough of a difference because of foul trouble.

Unlike Andris, POB didn't hit anything close to an acceptable percentage of his shots and he was substandard as a rebounder, the two things that correlate best with winning basketball.  The only real similar thing was that like AB, POB has to cut down on his fouls too, though in light of how crappy the rest of his game was, perhaps it's a blessing that he wouldn't stay in games.  The best thing we can say about POB is that his minutes were so limited that it's possible that the sample size was just too small to even recognize this, but there's nothing promising about what he's done in the NBA.  There was something promising about AB at the same point.

He played
in 16 games all year, most of those garbage time as the clock was being run down.  You have to give him more of a chance than that to succeed, especially since he was only 20 years old.

chance?
I have to give him more of a chance?  Why?  He didn't do anything when he was in games and, based on the decision to send him to the NBADL, he didn't do enough in practices to make Nellie think that he was worth keeping around either.  If there's no indication from what he's done that he'll capitalize on the chance, it's a sucker's bet to say we have to give him a chance so we can have 32 or 82 or 160 games to show that he's still a guy who doesn't belong.

I'll give you that we haven't really seen much of him, but it was near universally bad when we did see him.  Is there another player who was ever that bad starting out who didn't continue to suck?  Another 7 footer who couldn't hit 35% of his shots, whose rebound numbers (in garbage time, when there's more opportunities for rebounds because guys are chucking up shots because the game's over and everyone wants a chance to shoot)?  There might be, but I'd wager that the ones who sucked that bad continued to suck.  It's wishful thinking, not actual evidence, that suggests that he just needs a chance.

POB needs a new JOB
no he is not worth the time at all....POB was mike montgomery's type of player...a slow the ball down..drop it into the post type of thing going on....cleary he cannot fit into our system....he did not even dominate in the d league....he needs to be on a team that slows the ball down....and warriors basketball is not that....so basically we just have to take this draft pick as a loss and trade him away when we can....

He did pretty well
in the D-Leauge.  That league is not one in which the ball gets dumped to the center, it is dominated by scoring guards.  He also went to the worst team in the entire D-Leauge.  After he arrived, his team dramatically improved.  It took him about five games to get a groove going, but then he started routinely grabbing 10-15 rbs per game while swatting 3 shots.  His scoring was up and down, and sometimes he had foul troubles.

A lot of times his contributions aren't seen in the box score, kind of like AB.  He may only get contributed with 1 block, but he will change many more than that.  In the one game we got to see him get adequate playing time, the Clipper game after the trade, he showed enough to me to realize that we have to stick it out with him.  He has good skill, is very long and pretty athletic.  He doesn't have good stamina, but that's what the offseason with the trainer are for.  Once he gets a little more consistent with the sky hook, he could be a real help to this team.
